Even in 1965, the film divided opinion. Wise originally turned down the chance to direct because he felt it was too saccharine. Reviews were lukewarm. The eminent critic Pauline Kael described it as “the sugar-coated lie that people seem to want to eat.”
But bad films don’t survive to be loved as much as this one is. And from the soaring opening shot, swooping over the mountains to find the glorious figure of Julie Andrews singing with a voice as clear as a mountain stream and as pure as an angel, to the closing moment when Andrews leads her bedraggled family back over those heights, the movie has a confidence and a sense of moral purpose that warms the hardest heart.

APPLE'S iPhone continues to dominate the smartphone market, filling six spots in the top 10 devices of the year.

If you're a keen Android user, you should probably avoid reading the latest list of top selling smartphones in 2015.
According to price comparison service USwitch, Apple's iPhone range dominated the top 10.
Apple's hugely successful smartphone took up six spots in the top 10 best-sellers of 2015.
The news comes after Android fans bombarded Apple's first app in the Google Play Store with negative reviews, blasting its users as "iSheep".

The most popular smartphone of the last year was the Apple iPhone 6 with 16GB of internal storage, according to the USwitch data.

Since then, reports of issues across the globe have surged as users flocked to social media to complain about the WhatsApp outages.
WhatsApp was rated the worst app for protecting users’ data, earlier this year.

A video has appeared online titled 'a Nematode worm inside a woman's eye' - and it's every bit as squeamish as you'd think.
Parasitic nematodes - the worm in this poor woman's eye - can vary in length from several millimetres to approximately 2 metres.

The short video shows a close-up view of a woman's eye with the eyelashes at the bottom of the picture.
What might seem like a normal video suddenly gets weird when a worm wiggles into picture near the iris.

As the woman blinks, the little white worm comes into focus as it twists around her pupil and across to the other side of the eye.
Thankfully, the woman doesn't appear to be in any pain and allows the doctor to take a closer look at the worm.
However, it should be noted having a nematode in the eye can lead to blindness.
The video is captioned: "I wasn't sure if you wanted to see the treatment; it involves slicing the conjunctiva and draining the aqueous humour with a vacuum tube; not pleasant to look at.

JUVENTUS are favourites to sign Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas this January as they prepare to lose star midfielder Paul Pogba, according to reports.

I took a lot of time and research in writing this article on How to Add some really amazing snow effect on blog. Emenalo is Chelsea's technical director, and has revealed why Mourinho is no longer manager

MICHAEL EMENALO has revealed that Chelsea sacked Jose Mourinho because of the breakdown of his relationship with the players.

Mourinho was dismissed earlier today as with the champions just a point above the relegation zone, languishing in 16th place.
But Emenalo, the club's technical director, has told Chelsea TV that the dressing room problems played a part
"While there is huge sentiment for the individual who has done so much for the club, the fact of the matter is that Chelsea Football Club is in trouble," said Emenalo.

"The results are not good. There obviously seems to be a palpable discord between the manager and the players and we felt it was time to act.
"The owner is forced to make what is a very trough decision for the good of the club.

Screenings could cut deaths by nearly a quarter

SCREENING for ovarian cancer can cut deaths by more than a quarter, a major new study has revealed.

The cancer is the fifth most common in women - around 7,100 are diagnosed with it each year in Britain and it kills more than 4,000.
But because the symptoms of ovarian cancer can be similar to those of other conditions, it can be difficult to recognise and is often spotted too late.
Overall, 72 in 100 will live for at least one year after being diagnosed, around 46 out of 100 will live for at least five years and 35 out of 100 will live for at least 10 years.

But women with advanced ovarian cancer have a poorer survival rate. Six out of 10 will be dead within five years.

Jose Mourinho reportedly made Roman Abramovich promise not to hire Pep Guardiola

JOSE MOURINHO requested one thing from Roman Abramovich after being sacked yesterday, according to sensational reports in Spain.

The Portuguese was dismissed by the Blues for a second time as the title-winning side crumbled to 16th in the table.
Chelsea lost 2-1 to Leicester on Monday and Mourinho admitted a place in the top four was no longer possible.

Guud Hiddink is set to take over at Chelsea until the end of the season

GUUS HIDDINK is close to becoming the new Chelsea manager - and has now been spotted in London.

The Dutchman is set to agree a deal to replace Jose Mourinho until the end of the season.
Mourinho was sacked yesterday after losing nine times in the opening 16 Premier League games.
The BBC report that Hiddink is already through the airport gates and is set for talks this afternoon.

Mourinho's second spell in west London came to an end yesterday just four months on from signing a new four-year deal.
But the Blues had spiralled out of control and technical director Michael Emenalo yesterday confirmed that the Portuguese had lost the dressing room and something had to change.
“Anybody, any fan, can understand that this club is in trouble and something had to be done,” said Emenalo.
“The contract clearly signifies that what happened today was not a pre-meditated decision, it was a decision taken to protect the interests of the club.

ANGEL DI MARIA was contacted by Paris Saint-Germain just days before he went AWOL on Manchester United's pre-season tour.

United had expected Argentine Di Maria to join up with the squad midway through their summer tour of the USA.
But the winger refused to turn up and instead forced through a switch to PSG before the start of the season.
United sold Di Maria for £44million - a loss of £15.7m on the club record fee they paid Real Madrid for the 27-year-old back in 2014.

And Di Maria revealed in an interview with beIN Sports that Blanc phoned him during PSG's own tour of the States and convinced him to quit United.
"The first time we spoke, it was before I signed for PSG," Di Maria said. "This made me very happy.
"It happened the same way when (Jose) Mourinho made me come to Real Madrid. They called me before I spoke with them.
