LiteratureThemes And Dynamics Of European Nigeria Relations by newspapers(op): 6:25pm On Jul 20, 2013
Nigeria is both economically and politically a very important country to the European Union. In trade, Nigeria has had a major role in exporting formerly agricultural products and subsequently petroleum products to Europe, while also being a major importer of European products.

Regionally, Nigeria is the leading country in West Africa, and with its great human and natural resource endowments, Nigeria has the potential to become the region’s engine for economic growth. Politically, Nigeria has for many years served as a stabilizing force throughout the West African region, especially through its peacekeeping efforts in Liberia and Sierra Leone.
http://www.gistarea.com/rotational-presidency-cure-lopsided-political-leadership
In view of all this we in the European Union are extremely interested in the political and economic developments in Nigeria. We realize that those developments do not affect the living conditions of its own population only but have impact far beyond the country’s borders. In the independent world of today, the effects of turns of events in Nigeria are felt also in Europe.
No wonder then that even during the worst of the time the European Union never even consider the possibility of turning its back on Nigeria. The ties that unite Europe and Nigeria have always been stronger than the factors that separate them.
Nigeria European Relations and its Importance http://www.gistarea.com/

Naturally, the EU Nigeria relations have had their ups and downs. They reached their lowest level in November 1995 when the execution of nine Ogoni leaders led to the EU introducing sanctions covering, inter alia, arms sales, the suspension of development cooperation, visa restrictions for high level visits, and a sports boycott.

These sanctions were repeatedly extended until 1998 when there was a change of government in Nigeria and the government announced a timetable for democratic election. The European Union responded by adopting a new Common Position easing the sanctions and also by making available a support package for the elections.

On 31 May 1999, following Nigeria’s return to democracy, a Joint Communiqué by the European Commission and the Federal Republic of Nigeria was issued, announcing that the relations between the EU and Nigeria would now be entirely normalized and that also the development cooperation would be resumed. At this point, I should like to deal with development cooperation, which traditionally has been important element in the interchange between the EU and Nigeria. While emphasizing the importance of sizeable bilated development cooperation between Nigeria and the EU member states, I shall in this presentation concentrate on the so-called community aid.(http://www.gistarea.com/)

Under the four successive Lome Conventions since 1975, Nigeria has been allocated a total of over 1. I billion euros: approximately 750 million euros has been in the form of grants managed by the European Commission and over 370 million euros in the from of loans managed by the European investment Bank. Nigeria’s Lome IV national indicative Programme, 375 million euros, is the large of any ACP country.

Kidnappers have killed Abakaliki-based business mogul, Chief Godwin Nwosu, after collecting a ransom from his family.

His body was found yesterday close to the Ebonyi State Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), 48 hours after he was abducted by gun-wielding men on his way home from work.

PoliticsOkorocha Declares War On Kidnappers In Imo by newspapers(op): 1:56pm On Jul 02, 2012
Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, has declared war on kidnappers and other criminals in the state, saying “it is now fire for fire.”
https://imostate.blog.com/files/2011/10/DSCN0105-1024x768.jpg

Okorocha, who spoke against the backdrop of continued cases of kidnapping and armed robbery in the state, warned unrepentant kidnappers, “henceforth it will be fire for fire.”

According to him, “I want to state that one of the challenges we have had as a state has been insecurity, especially kidnapping. The time is up for the kidnappers.”

He assured the citizenry that “there will be no more kidnapping anywhere again in the state because we have taken the necessary measures to curb the menace. Now, we have resolved to march fire for fire.”

Okorocha lamented that his appeals to kidnappers and armed robbers to repent from their criminal activities and engage in meaningful activities fell on deaf ears.

It will be recalled that Imo State had been under siege, especially from the beginning of this year and despite the huge monetary reward of N1 million announced by the state government for any person that gives credible information that would lead to the arrest of kidnappers and armed robbers.

PoliticsFormer President Olusegun Obasanjo Failed To Raise Capable Leaders by newspapers(op): 6:43pm On Jun 07, 2012
Renowned economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, has dismissed former President Olusegun Obasanjo as lacking leadership quality. He conjointly accused the previous president of falling to lift capable leaders.

Utomi, once delivering a lecture titled, ‘Re-appraising the Concept of Sovereignty’ at the graduation of the Philosophy Department of the Dominican Institute, Ibadan on Friday, regretted that Obasanjo didn’t create sensible use of his second likelihood as leader of the country.

Obasanjo served Nigeria as a military ruler between February thirteen, one976 to October 1, 1979; and as elected President from could twenty nine, 1999 to could twenty nine, 2007.

Utomi said, “One of my biggest pain is that former President Obasanjo, once the expertise he had, didn’t do what he ought to do as a pacesetter to form this country. He didn’t rise to the role he speculated to play.

“I suppose that he was in a very position where he may examine history and dream to be the daddy of this nation. the sole role that he ought to have played was to bring the most effective and therefore the brightest brains along and encourage them and then watch the country grow, however he failed. My personal read is that there are things from his childhood that kept him back.

“Obasanjo passed through folks telling him lies. If you tell him one thing that produces sense, overnight someone can come back and tell him a unique factor. He would dance and create foolish choices. God simply place Obasanjo there to play that remodeling role in Nigeria however somehow, he didn’t correspond with the grace that was given to him.”

According to the Social Democratic Mega Party’s candidate within the 2011 presidential election, the leadership the country needs is one that engages in self sacrifice.

Utomi added, “It is regarding data. If you don’t have data you can’t do it. If those 2 come back along well progress can happen.

“We can get to the purpose where we tend to can’t excuse the incompetence anymore. however these characters have to be compelled to depart this world and that i don’t shrewdness.

“We cannot lose hope. matters in India was therefore dangerous at a time however the history of India modified. I even have a positive read of Nigeria. a part of Nigerian’s tragedy is that the folks don’t scan.

“Rather than the worry of Nigeria calling it quits I dream to ascertain Nigeria where at some point Benin Republic can say as a result of the country has done well we wish to be the thirty seventh state.”

The President, Dominican Institute, Prof. Anthony Akinwale, said the department selected the lecture title due to the state of the state.

PoliticsDana Plane Crash: Fear Of GHOSTS Grips Iju Ishaga Residents by newspapers(op): 6:39pm On Jun 07, 2012
Some residents of Iju-Ishaga, Lagos, have appealed to the authorities to bury the victims of the Sunday Dana aircrash far from the area for FEAR of GHOSTS. shocked shocked shocked shocked

Their apprehension was based on their belief in the existence of ghosts, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Idayatu Ali, a 24-year-old unemployed school leaver, said she would not want the victims to be buried at the scene of the accident, “for fear of ghosts”.

According to her, human beings are no goats and when they die prematurely, especially, violently, their ghosts will haunt the scene for a while.

“This is no superstition; I have witnessed where a young man died in an accident and his ghost continued to cry at the scene for days until a sacrifice was performed.

“Please, tell them not to bury the victims here or else some of us will have to abandon our houses,” she pleaded.

However, Jude Agwu, a commercial motorcyclist, said he and some colleagues could easily offer sacrifices to Ogun (the Yoruba god iron) in a bid to get rid of any ghost threat.

The South-West Zonal Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Iyiola Akande, said no decision had been taken on where to bury the victims.

He, however, believed that identifiable bodies should be released to their relations for burial, while badly burnt ones would be given mass burial, probably far from the scene.

“This is a densely populated area and erecting a memorial here may not be in the interest of the psyche of the residents,” he said.

PoliticsTimipre Sylva Remanded For N6.5 Billion Scam by newspapers(op): 11:25pm On Jun 05, 2012
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, June 5th , 2012 arraigned a former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva before Justice Adamu Bello of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on a six count charge of fraud, criminal conversion, and conspiracy to commit crime to the tune of over N2billion when he held sway as governor of the state.

Prosecution counsel, Festus Keyamo had sought the leave of the court for the six count charges to be read to the accused person and his plea was granted. Sylva ,however, pleaded not guilty to all the count charges.

Lead defense counsel, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, leading another senior advocate of Nigeria along with 12 other lawyers, then moved a bail application on behalf of Sylva. He told the court that the defense team had filed a bail application dated May 22nd , 2012, supported by a twelve- paragraph affidavit, a written address and a reply to the counter affidavit filed by prosecution counsel, Festus Keyamo opposing the bail application.

Fagbemi informed the court that the offenses for which Sylva is standing trial are ordinarily bailable, and that the main purpose of bail is to ensure that an accused person faces trial . Citing authority of the Supreme Court in Saidu VS State (1982), the defense counsel urged the court to discharge its discretion for bail on lenient terms while taking judicial notice of the fact that the accused person came to court on his own volition to answer his charges.

In his response, prosecution counsel, Festus Keyamo informed the court that he had filed a sixteen- paragraph counter- affidavit accompanied with a written address in opposition to the bail being sought for the accused person. Keyamo told the court to take judicial notice of the several applications filed by prosecution for substituted service of Sylva who evaded service and even ran out of the country and deny him bail. He further urged the court to note that an accused person who had shown a propensity to bolt away should not be trusted to be around during his trial , if granted bail.

Furthermore, Keyamo asked the court to also note that there was a judicial pronouncement in a sister matter before Justice Okorowa with the same charge “that there is a very strong prima-facie case against the accused” but only that at that time, he enjoyed immunity as a sitting governor. Keyamo then prayed that the court in the exercise of its discretion of bail, should note the weighty evidence against the accused person and deny him bail while remanding him in prison custody.

Justice Adamu Bello reserved ruling on the bail application of the accused person till Thursday, June 7th , 2012 and directed that the accused person be remanded in EFCC custody.

Some of the charges against Sylva are:

COUNT 1:

That you, Timipre Sylva, as Governor of Bayelsa State, with others now at large, sometime between October, 2009 and February, 2010, at various places in Nigeria, including Abuja, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court did conspire to commit a crime to wit: conversion of properties and resources amounting to N2,000,000,000.00 (Two Billion Naira) belonging to Bayelsa State Government and derived from an illegal act, with the aim of concealing the illicit origin of the said amount and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 17(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition Act), 2004 and punishable under Section 14(1) of the same Act.

COUNT 2:

That you, Timipre Sylva, as Governor of Bayelsa State, with others now at large, on or about the 22nd of January, 2010, at Abuja, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court, converted the sum of N380,000,000.00 (Three Hundred and Eighty Million Naira), property of the Bayelsa State Government, through the account of one Habibu Sani Maigidia, a Bureau De Change Operator with Account No. 221433478108, in Fin Bank, Plc, which sum you knew represented the proceeds of an illegal act with the aim of concealing the nature of the proceeds of the said illegal act and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 14(1) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition Act) 2004 and also punishable under section 14(1) of the same Act.

PoliticsNigeria Against United Nations Gay Rights Resolution by newspapers(op): 10:38am On Jun 20, 2011
Nigeria warned that the UN could turn into a “guinea pig” of policies that cannot be carried out by members after the resolution of the rights of gay, transgender people and lesbian.
Nigeria Newspapers – Nigeria voted against a South-Africa sponsored resolution that endorsed the rights of gay, lesbian and transgender people for the first time ever at the UN Human Rights Council.

Nigeria’s vote was, however, not enough to defeat the resolution which was passed on Friday by the Geneva-based Council with 23 votes in favour, 19 against and three abstentions.

The declaration expressed “grave concern” about abuses because of sexual orientation and commissioned a global report on discrimination against gays.

It called for a panel discussion next year with “constructive, informed and transparent dialogue on the issue of discriminatory laws and practices and acts of violence against” gays, lesbians and transgender people.

The resolution brought forward by South Africa was backed by the US the EU, Brazil and other Latin American countries.

Nigeria, which spoke on behalf of the African group at the Council, was prominent among the nations that voted against including Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. China, Burkina Faso and Zambia abstained while Kyrgyzstan didn’t vote, as well as Libya which was suspended from the 47 member states amid violations of human rights by Mohammar Gaddafi’s regime.

Speaking on behalf of the African group, Nigeria’s representative at the Council Ositadinma Anaedu said African countries, “and more than 90 per cent of the African people” did not support the resolution.

He said notions on sexual orientation should not be imposed on countries and warned against turning the “UN into a guinea pig” of policies that could not be implemented by member countries.

“African Group remains committed to the principle of non-discrimination. African group believes that no human being should be subjected to any discrimination because of any particular behaviour inherent in his or her nature.

“African groups believe very strongly that at all times we should focus and conduct our work in a way that will advance collective commitment of human rights and not undermine it.

“Mr President, If I may ask how come that all countries that lack the ability to have laws and rules and constitutional enactment on issue of sexual orientation only have the guts in the Human Rights Council.

“Does it not show fraudulent practice? Because countries that lack the political will within their nations to subject themselves to the true picture of democracy are the ones that are here imposing in their countries things that they did not accept.

“It means going against all norms of what we are preaching here: principles of transparency, principles of democracy; principles of accountability.” Anaedu noted that of recent, one of the countries that voted in favour of the resolution had the issue rejected at home in Europe and added that even “the greatest country on earth does not have this as a constitutional provision.

“But every time we are turning the UN into a guinea pig in things that we cannot even implement at home,” he said.

The Nigerian representative cautioned that the Human Rights Council should be careful not to go against its objective of promoting “human rights.”

Meanwhile in a statement on Friday, the Obama administration which had been pushing for gay rights both domestically and internationally strongly backed the declaration.

A White House statement said the resolution marked a “significant milestone in the long struggle for equality.”

“This marks a significant milestone in the long struggle for equality, and the beginning of a universal recognition that (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) persons are endowed with the same inalienable rights – and entitled to the same protections – as all human beings,” the White House said.

Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Nigeria and is punishable by death through stoning in the 12 states that have adopted Shari’a law, and by up to 14 years imprisonment throughout Nigeria.

CrimeNigerian Police Unearth 20 Corpses In Onitsha by newspapers(op): 1:24pm On Jun 19, 2011
Nigerian police have uncovered 20 corpses hidden in a tunnel in the southeastern town of Onitsha, and suspect they were victims of armed robbers.Police said they happened upon the hideout on Saturday while responding to an attempted sexual assault in Onitsha’s Upper Iweka district, where commuters are often prey to muggers riding motorbike taxis known by the trade name Okada.

“The 20 corpses were at different stages of decomposition. Some have become skeletons,” said Onuora Ikonso, head of the state police task force.

“We suspect the bodies are victims of armed robbery attacks and were dragged into the tunnel, waylaid and killed.”

He called on the local government to extend an Okada curfew, which currently begins at 7 p.m., “to ensure the safety of travellers”.

Onitsha is a busy trading port on the banks of the Niger river in southeastern Anambra state, north of the oil-producing wetland swamps of the Niger Delta.

PoliticsHeavy Bomb Blast Hits Police Headquarters In Abuja by newspapers(op): 1:21pm On Jun 19, 2011
A heavy bomb blast rocked police headquarters in the Nigerian capital Abuja on Thursday.
Witnesses said authorities had cordoned off the roads approaching the police station and ambulances and fire engines were at the scene. The television stations NTA, Channels and AIT all reported that the blast had been caused by a bomb.

“My windows were shaking and I heard the loud noise. I saw smoke coming up. I think it was from the car park of the police station,” one witness said.

A series of explosions and attacks targeting police and fire service headquarters rocked north-eastern Nigeria last week, suspected to have been carried out by a radical Islamist sect.

Boko Haram, which says it wants a wider application of sharia (Islamic law) in Africa’s most populous nation, has warned that it will carry out further attacks across the country if its demands are not met.

A suspected suicide bomber was killed and many vehicles were destroyed in the explosion at a police station, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said in a report from the Jerusalem Post.

“A suicide bomber died in the incident and many vehicles were destroyed,” a spokesman for NEMA told Reuters. “NEMA has successfully cordoned off the motor park site of police headquarters where the explosion occurred.”
