Nairaland General › Google Is 21 Today, Happy Birthday Google! by Ngozi14(op): 7:36am On Sep 27, 2019 |
Internet search giant Google is celebrating its 21st birthday.
The real date when Google was founded, though, remains something of a mystery – and even the company admits it does not know exactly when it began.
Google, which was founded by Stanford students Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998, usually marks its birthday on September 27 each year, although in 2005 it marked the anniversary a day earlier.
To add to the confusion, Google sent out their celebratory doodle on September 8 in 2003, and a day earlier in 2004.
When was Google founded?
The company lists its start date as September 4, 1998 on its website but the idea for creating the new search engine first materialised in 1996.
September 27 appears to have stuck through chance, because that’s the date when the company first celebrated its birthday, back in 2002.
Page and Brin derived the title from the word ‘googol’, which is the number one followed by a hundred zeroes – a reflection of the vast amount of searchable data. https://metro.co.uk/2019/09/27/happy-birthday-google-when-was-google-first-created-and-by-whom-as-the-search-engine-celebrates-its-21st-birthday-10815191/amp/

Politics › Anambra Lawmakers Reject Prado Jeeps, Prefer Innoson Jeep To Save Cost by Ngozi14(op): 12:55pm On Sep 25, 2019 |
Members of the Anambra State House of Assembly have reportedly rejected Toyota Prado Jeep which the state government was said to be planning to distribute to them for effective discharge of their oversight functions, preferring instead, the locally manufactured Innoson Jeep so as to save cost.
The lawmakers were said to have argued that the purchase of Toyota Prado Jeeps to the tune of almost N1billion was an unnecessary waste of funds when a similar vehicle produced by Innoson Motors Limited, Nnewi, would cost much less.
According to the lawmakers, Anambra State government should toe the line of other governors of the South East and South–South zones that have been patronizing the local car manufacturing company, adding that it was improper for Governor Willie Obiano to be patronizing dealers of foreign vehicles when Innoson Motors was located in his state.
The chief press secretary to the speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly Mr. Emma Madu, however, said yesterday that he was not aware of any planned car gift to the lawmakers.
But the chairman of South East conference of 2019 APC House of Assembly candidates, an umbrella of those who contested this year’s general election on the platform of the party, Mr. Afam Ezenwafor said they had it in good authority that the state government had concluded plans to purchase the Prado Jeeps for the state lawmakers.
Ezenwafor said: “The market price for 2018 model of Prado Jeep for the 30 members of the state Assembly is about N33 million each and I wonder why about N1 billion of Anambra State fund should be taken outside the shores of this country, instead of using it to purchase Innoson IVM SUV Jeeps for the House members at a much lower cost.
“We cannot be talking of ‘Aku lue uno’ (Support for local industry), without patronizing our local investors. In fact, the Speaker of the House, Mr. Uche Okafor should stop the planned purchase of SUV Prado Jeeps and ask the governor to rather get Innoson Jeeps for them.”
He also urged the South-East governors to make it mandatory for all commissioners, House of Assembly members, local government chairmen, permanent secretaries, head of agencies and all other government officials to use Innoson as their official cars, adding that it would reduce high demands for foreign exchange for the purchase of vehicles.
Ezenwafor recalled that former Governor Peter Obi bought over 500 pieces of Innoson vehicles during his administration for the vigilante services, schools and local government councils in the state, arguing that such a thing was worthy of emulation.
He also commended Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State who, he said, purchased over 100 Hilux pickups from Innoson Motors for the security agencies in the state.
“We can only grow our local economy and encourage think- home investment when our leaders patronize local contents,” Ezenwafor further said. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/09/anambra-lawmakers-reject-prado-jeeps-prefer-innoson-jeep-to-save-cost/

Education › Singapore Abolishes School Exam Rankings, Says Learning Is Not Competition by Ngozi14(op): 12:13pm On Jun 04, 2019 |
Whether a child finishes first or last will no longer be indicated in primary and secondary school report books from next year in Singapore, – a move which Education Minister Ong Ye Kung hopes will show students that “learning is not a competition”.
Report books will not just stop showing a student’s position in relation to class or cohort. The information to be dropped includes:
Class and level mean Minimum and maximum marks Underlining and/or colouring of failing marks Pass/fail for end-of-year result Mean subject grades Overall total marks L1R5 (English plus five relevant subjects), L1R4 , EMB3 (English, maths, best three subjects) and EMB1 for lower secondary levels The Ministry of Education (MOE) said on Friday (Sept 28) that the change is to allow each student to focus on his or her learning progress and discourage them from being overly concerned about comparisons.
From next year all examinations for Primary 1 and 2 pupils will also be removed, and whatever forms of assessment they have will not count towards an overall grade.
The MOE said that teachers will continue to gather information about pupils’ learning through discussions, homework and quizzes. Schools will use other ways like “qualitative descriptors”, in place of marks and grades, to evaluate pupils’ progress at these two levels.
For older students in primary schools and secondary schools, marks for each subject will be rounded off and presented as a whole number, without decimal points – to reduce the focus on academic scores. Parents will continue to receive information about their child’s progress in school during parent-teacher meetings.
In an address to some 1,700 school leaders earlier this week, Mr Ong said: “I know that ‘coming in first or second’, in class or level, has traditionally been a proud recognition of a student’s achievement. But removing these indicators is for a good reason, so that the child understands from young that learning is not a competition, but a self-discipline they need to master for life.
“Notwithstanding, the report book should still contain some form of yardstick and information to allow students to judge their relative performance, and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.” https://citinewsroom.com/2018/10/singapore-abolishes-school-exam-rankings-says-learning-is-not-competition/

Politics › Yari Heads To Supreme Court Over Zamfara APC Governorship Primary by Ngozi14(op): 6:12pm On Mar 26, 2019 |
Zamfara State Governor, Abdul’Aziz Yari, has reacted to the court judgment which nullified the primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the governorship election in the state.
Addressing State House correspondents on Tuesday in Abuja, the governor said he would approach the Supreme Court on the matter.
He explained that the purpose of going to the apex court was to seek the interpretation of the ruling for better understanding.
“I think it is better for us to go to the Supreme Court so that the court can be able to explain what the judgment is about,” Governor Yari said.
He added, “In the entire judgment, there is no order or directive of what to be done or what not to be done.”
The governor also noted that the judgement did not make any pronouncement regarding the National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections in the state
He addressed reporters a day after the Court of Appeal in Sokoto State nullified the APC primary for the governorship election in Zamfara
This followed an appeal filed by the lawmaker representing Zamfara Central district and Senate Committee Chairman on Petroleum (Downstream), Senator Kabiru Marafa, and 129 others
In its ruling on Monday, the appellate court set aside the decision of the Zamfara State High Court which allowed the APC to field a candidate for the governorship election in the state
It held that the trial court failed to carry out a proper evaluation of the evidence before it before arriving at a decision.
According to the appellate court, the decision of the State High Court was fraught with error.
It added that it has the power in law to assess pieces of evidence on appeal, which the court had done in this case https://www.channelstv.com/2019/03/26/yari-heads-to-supreme-court-over-zamfara-apc-governorship-primary/

Crime › Armed gangs WIPE OUT 15 villages in mass Christian slaughter in NG -TelegraphUK by Ngozi14(op): 7:04pm On Mar 17, 2019 |
ARMED men stormed through 15 villages to massacre Christians and destroy their churches in a violent crackdown against the religion in Nigeria
Dozens of people have been killed after the gangs ransacked towns and villages to clear them of all aspects of the Christian faith.
Houses belonging to believers have also been razed with authorities doing little to help, an anti-persecution watchdog claimed.
Open Doors spoke to one Christian who described the broad daylight attack carried out by a group of Fulani - one of Africa’s largest ethnicities.
A spokeswoman said: “One attack took place in broad daylight, as people were about to go to church.
"The assailants chased and killed the villagers and burned down nine churches and many more houses.”
Christian persecution is a major problem in Nigeria which has been exacerbated by the spread of radical Islamic teaching and practice.
The shocked witness said Christians needed more protection from the country’s leader or lives would continue to be lost.
They said: “Despite several calls to the governor and his deputy, and other security apparatus, the government remained silent as the atrocities continued.
“The Fulani were able to carry out their deadly attack. They stayed for hours in the vicinity, moving at will, unchallenged.” Read more here https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/919422/christian-persecution-nigeria-islamic-Nasarawa

Politics › BREAKING: Supreme Court Upholds Judgment Nullifying Rivers APC Primaries- SR by Ngozi14(op): 1:46pm On Feb 08, 2019 |
A five-man panel of Judges of the Supreme Court has issued a judgment upholding the nullification of the primaries of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State.
On January 7, 2019, a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, nullified the primaries conducted by the two factions of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State. In the judgment, the court also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from presenting Tonye Cole, Magnus Abe and other candidates of the APC in the 2019 governorship election in the state.
However, on February 4, 2019, the Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt granted stay of execution of the Federal High Court’s judgement.
Sequel to that the Cole APC faction had taken the case to the Supreme Court.
At the hearing presided by Justice Mohammed Dattijo on Friday, the Supreme Court dismissed the suit, and upheld the judgment of the Federal High Court. http://saharareporters.com/2019/02/08/breaking-supreme-court-upholds-judgment-nullifying-rivers-apc-primaries

Politics › I Won’t Disappoint Nigerians Again, Says Buhari As He Begs For More 4 Years by Ngozi14(op): 8:00pm On Jan 03, 2019 |
President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed not to disappoint Nigerians in appreciation for the confidence reposed in him by people from different walks of life.
The President spoke on Thursday at State House, Abuja, as he was decorated Grand Patron of the Nigerian Media Merit Award by the Board of Trustees of the prime media awards organisation in the country.
He described the investiture as “a timely honour”, adding that he had known a good number of the members of the NMMA board “since the time I didn’t even know I would be here”.
Former Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority, Mr Vincent Maduka, who led the delegation, said Buhari was qualified to be grand patron “because you respect the rights of the media to practice, without any hindrance”.
He noted that under Buhari, no media house had been shut, and the first ever campus television licence was awarded to the University of Lagos, under the chairmanship of veteran Mass Communication teacher, Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye.
Maduka explained that the NMMA was established in 1990, to promote excellence in Nigerian media, and has hosted 26 grand award presentations, with the latest that held just a week ago.
He added that part of the goals of NMMA was the promotion of professionalism, patriotism and unity of the country. http://community.vanguardngr.com/m/discussion?id=4565467%3ATopic%3A2104561

Politics › "Minimum Wage Should Vary From State To State" - Peter Obi by Ngozi14(op): 11:00am On Jan 02, 2019 |
Mr. Peter Obi, the Vice Presidential candidate of PDP has joined the debate on national minimum wage and submitted the need for states to determine what they pay their workers based on their realities.
“Minimum wage doesn’t have to be universal,” he said on Politics Today, a programme of ChannelsTV. “I don’t believe that somebody in Lagos should earn the same thing as somebody who is in, maybe, Anambra State or somebody in Maiduguri.”
He, however, stressed that it was important to have a federal minimum wage which is the product of proper talks with labour.
If elected, Obi who is the running mate of Atiku Abubakar for the forthcoming Presidential election said: “We will sit down with labour to find a constructive and acceptable decision”.
His views on the matter are not new.
During his tenure as governor of Anambra State, he had expressed them.
“I argued that every state is not the same. I said every state is not the same; every state won’t pay the same,” he said.
What is ideal for him is that: “There has to be a federal minimum, then each state, working within this minimum, can decide where they should go. That is what is obtainable all over the world”.
Asked what amount he thinks should be a minimum, he stressed that it would be determined at a meeting with labour, if his party wins the election.
“I can tell you this – you know what we are saying here – I am sure we will be able to come out with what is acceptable because I know we will sit down and discuss this constructively with the labour.”
Mr Obi, who condemned the Federal Government’s borrowing plan, argued that the amount spent on infrastructure did not correspond with the level of borrowing.
He rubbished claims that the PDP’s campaign was not working, insisting that such claims were part of efforts to divert attention from the real issues.
“The issue in this campaign is about millions of unemployment campaign,” he said, adding, “We have millions of Nigerians who don’t know where the next meal will come from”.
Citing the ongoing ASUU strike, which has grounded academic activities in universities, adequate attention was not being paid to critical issues in the country.
The Nigerian civil service is considered bloated and inefficient by many, but Mr Obi is confident that an administration led by him and Atiku can turn it around without much trouble.
“You can make it work; you can make it to be productive,” he said of the civil service.
“There is nothing about being overbloated. Yes, there might be issues but you can make it work. You can decide to make every worker, every employee to be productive.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/01/i-dont-believe-somebody-in-lagos-should-earn-the-same-thing-as-somebody-in-anambra-peter-obi/amp/

Politics › I'll Revisit Jonathan’s Confab Report - Atiku by Ngozi14(op): 7:36pm On Dec 16, 2018 |
Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has said he will decongest the exclusive and concurrent lists in the constitution as part of his plan to restructure the country. Atiku, who disclosed this to SUNDAY PUNCH through his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, also said the report of the 2015 Constitutional Conference on restructuring would be looked into by relevant stakeholders, adding that appropriate decision that would be of national interest, would be taken. According to him, it is not for one person to dictate that the report must be adopted or not Atiku said, “The autonomy of the states and local governments, both of which are closer to their people than the central government in Abuja, will result in more effective decisions that would be more potent and impactful in terms of results and effects.” Explaining the modalities for his planned restructuring, the former Vice President stated that the Federal Government would retain the role of providing the required direction for the economy, defence and national security, internal law and order, currency, international affairs and foreign policy, customs, citizenship and immigration, firearms and related matters. He said matters relating internal security, police, law and order, minerals and mines, land and environment as well as railways, transport and communication would be devolved to the concurrent list. Atiku added that local governments would assume its constitutional status as an independent tier of government. Meanwhile, his wife, Titi, and some leaders of the PDP groups, on Saturday, accused the President Buhari-led administration of harassing and intimidating opposition members. Speaking in separate interviews with our correspondent during the inauguration of Women Pathfinders Initiatives for Atiku/Obi in Abuja, they also alleged that Buhari’s government was stinking with corruption. Atiku, who was represented by her personal assistant, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Garba, accused some Buhari’s government’s officials of being enmeshed in corruption. She added that the government was allegedly shielding corrupt people. But the Federal Government said the allegations of the PDP members against the government were false and of no consequence, adding that Buhari was not intimidating the opposition. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, accused the PDP members of engaging in blackmail, adding that Buhari’s government was neither corrupt nor shielding corrupt people.
https://punchng.com/atiku-pledges-to-revisit-jonathans-confab-report/

Politics › Mass Slaughter Of Our Soldiers And Buhari’s Cruel Silence by Ngozi14(op): 8:30pm On Nov 24, 2018 |
By Farooq Kperogi The gruesome mass murder of Nigerian soldiers by maniacal Boko Haram terrorists is now all over both the domestic and international media, yet President Buhari, the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and retired Major General, hasn’t said a word about this, much less condole the bereaved families of the deceased soldiers. We know why: acknowledging the mass slaughter of our soldiers will expose his self-serving lie that Boko Haram has been defeated. Remember that on August 2, after Boko Haram murdered scores of soldiers once more, Buhari pretended it never happened and instead chose to meet with senators from his party who had threatened to defect to PDP. He is more concerned about the success of the NextLevel of incompetence and fraud he will inflict on Nigerians than he is with the tragic death of soldiers who sacrificed their lives in defense of the country. Isn’t this similar to, or even worse than, Jonathan’s attitude of blithe unconcern toward the Boko Haram tragedy in 2014? As many international news organizations have noted, more soldiers have been killed by Boko Haram under Buhari than at any time since the insurgency started in 2009. Yet, all he and his minions do is lie blatantly, shamelessly, and interminably about defeating Boko Haram. These dead soldiers are the sons, husbands, brothers, and cousins of humans like Buhari and us. A president who quickly ferried his son to Germany for world-class medical attention after he had an accident with a multi-million naira power bike can’t even as much as acknowledge the death of soldiers who died in defense of the land he leads. Yet he invited his incompetent service chiefs, whom he should have fired since if he was a sincere and competent leader, to grace his reelection campaign in the presidential villa. Buhari is undoubtedly the cruelest and most hopeless president Nigeria has ever had the misfortune to have. Anyone who is campaigning for the continuation of this cold, bungling, unfeeling wretch as president is an enemy of Nigeria. http://scannewsnigeria.com/news/mass-slaughter-of-our-soldiers-and-buharis-cruel-silence/
