Politics / INEC Declares Yahaya Abdullahi Winner In Niger State, Cancels Rerun Election by Ngtimes: 12:30pm On Mar 22, 2019
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced decision to halt the rerun for the Niger state House Assembly elections in Agaie constituency.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Prof. Sam Egwu, yesterday, issued a press statement declaring the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Yahaya Abdullahi, as winner of the election.

INEC said its decision was sequel to the earlier declaration of the PDP candidate winner of the election by the returning officer, Prof. Musa Kolo.

The REC, in a statement he personally signed, said, “the rerun in two units has been dropped after due consultations with stakeholders.”

However, in a swift reaction, APC chairman, Eng. Mohammed Jibril Imam said the commission’s decision declaring the PDP candidate winner was unacceptable.

He said INEC erred in declaring the PDP candidate winner of the election it earlier said was inconclusive.

“Why should the commission take such critical decision when the votes difference in the results under contention were just 106, while the two units the rerun was billed to take place boast of 1,437 votes.” Imam queried in a chat with reporters.

Politics / Osun Election: Tribunal Dismisses APC, Oyetola, INEC Objections Against Adeleke by Ngtimes: 12:02pm On Mar 22, 2019
The Election Tribunal set up on Osun 2018 governorship poll is currently delivering its judgement.
Delivering one of its earlier reserved rulings, the #OsunTribunal struck out the separate objections filed by APCz Oyetola and INEC against the petition by Adeleke/PDP #AdelekePDPvsOyetolaAPC.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, had challenged the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Gov. Gboyega Oyetola, at the Osun 2018 Governorship Election at the election tribunal.

The Osun Election Tribunal, which was moved to Abuja in November 2018, after it was initially inaugurated in Osogbo, has now fixed Friday, March 22, for its judgment on the suit filed by the PDP and its candidate.

Politics / MURIC Asks Buhari To Appoint Muslims As Ministers In Five South-west States by Ngtimes: 10:11am On Mar 22, 2019
Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint Muslim ministers from five south-west states.

In a statement by Ishaq Akintola, its director, the group said Muslims have been marginalised when it comes to ministerial appointment, especially in the south-west.

The group argued that “despite the fact that Muslims are in the majority in the region, they have always been “shortchanged politically.”

MURIC said while the region got two Muslim ministers in Buhari’s first term, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan reluctantly appointed two after a protest by religious leaders.

It, therefore, demanded that Buhari takes a proactive step by appointing “Muslim ministers in all the states where the governors are Christians (Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo and Ekiti)”.

“We received the worst treatment under former President Goodluck Jonathan. He appointed six ministers from the sub-region but, to our dismay, all of them were Christians. We complained about this gross injustice but he ignored us for three good years (2011 to 2014),” the statement read.

“A delegation of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) led by the Sultan of Sokoto met him in Aso Rock and presented this lopsidedness among other grudges. This was on Wednesday 26th March, 2014. To our surprise, Jonathan retorted by asking us why the northern states have not been sponsoring Christians in the North on pilgrimage.

“That was the kind of leader Jonathan was. We complained to him about the marginalization of a Muslim majority in the South West and he challenged us with the issue of Christian minorities in the North. That was how he exposed himself as a president whose interest lay in waging a crusade against Muslims. He reluctantly appointed two Muslims some months later. Wailers accusing President Buhari of lopsided appointments may take this as food for thought.

“MURIC is neither being selfish nor sentimental. Natural justice demands equitable representation if we are all part of the Nigerian project. By the time newly elected governors are sworn in on May 29, 2019, the South West will be having five Christian governors and only one Muslim governor. This leaves Muslims at a disadvantage in a sub-region where they are the majority.

“Unfortunately the situation was not redressed by the current administration. Of the six ministers appointed by Buhari, only two (Babatunde Raji Fashola and Adebayo Shittu) are Muslims. The remaining four are Christians. The only difference is that Buhari was not pressurized by the Muslims before he gave them two ministers. Neither were all his ministers from the area Christians like Jonathan did. Buhari gave the Muslims two slots and gave Christians four. Jonathan gave the Christians six and left the Muslims to whistle for their dinner.

“We are therefore demanding Muslim ministers in all the states where the governors are Christians (Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo and Ekiti). This request should be considered against the backdrop of the gross marginalisation which Yoruba Muslims have faced in the past.

“As we take a break, we appeal to the presidency to consider the need to urgently address the injustice done to Muslims in the South West where they are the majority. They have always been politically marginalized despite having qualified personnel. Unfortunately Buhari’s regime has also inadvertently shortchanged them. In the name of justice, fairness and equity, therefore, we demand Muslim ministers in the five South West states where the governors will be Christians come May 29, 2019.”

Politics / US: We Are Disappointed By Military’s Interference In 2019 Polls by Ngtimes: 9:21pm On Mar 21, 2019
The United States has expressed disappointment over the irregularities, including reports of military interference, in the 2019 general election.
In a statement on Thursday, the US embassy expressed sadness over the loss of lives during the elections and urged all stakeholders to work towards ensuring fair and credible supplementary elections.
The US congratulated Nigerians commitment to the electoral process, saying it would continue to follow the ongoing polls closely.
The embassy also reiterated its support for a democratic process “where the will of the Nigerian people is reflected in the results.”
“The United States once again congratulates the Nigerian people’s commitment to the democratic process throughout the election season,” the US said in a statement.
“The United States supports a democratic process where the will of the Nigerian people is reflected in the results.
“As long-time friends of Nigeria, we continue to follow closely the still ongoing elections. We do not have a preferred party or candidate.
“As noted by many observer groups in their preliminary reports, we too were disappointed by the low voter turnout as well as credible reports of voter intimidation, vote buying, interference by security forces, and violence in some locations.
“We are saddened by those acts of violence and extend our deepest sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives, including those who worked for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security services.
“As the 2019 electoral cycle comes to an end, we urge all stakeholders to work towards a free, fair, credible, transparent, and peaceful process, especially for the many Nigerians across the country who again will go to polls on Saturday.
“We encourage all stakeholders, including INEC, political parties, and the security services, to continue to improve the electoral process for future elections.
“We look to Nigeria as an important leader on the African continent. As a democratic partner of Nigeria, the United States remains committed to working together to achieve our mutual goals of peace and prosperity for the citizens of both our countries.”

Politics / Ekiti PDP To Challenge Results Of N’assembly Election At Tribunal by Ngtimes: 1:45am On Mar 18, 2019
The chairman , Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party , Chief Gboyega Oguntuwase , on Sunday said the party was ready to challenge the results of the National Assembly election conducted in the state at the election tribunal .

He said the conduct of the election defied all decent , civilised and acceptable approaches to democracy.

He spoke in an interview in Ado Ekiti , the state capital .

Oguntuwase said , “The presidential , National Assembly and House of Assembly elections in the state were characterised by violence , ballot snatching, ballot stuffing , vote- buying and threat to lives .

“ The entire state was riddled with uncivilised attitude to politics , all in a bid by the All Progressives Congress to win all available seats in the state by all means .

“ Our party has resolved not to allow this rape of democracy go unchallenged , hence our resolve to approach the judiciary as the only democratic process available.

“ We have given all our candidates in the National Assembly election the go- ahead to pursue their cases at the tribunal because if the broad daylight robbery against democratic attitudes go unchallenged , it is going to consume the nation and our democratic norms and process . ”

The PDP chairman hinged the resolve to challenge the National Assembly election on the party ’s commitment to purifying the system .

He said the team of lawyers being lined up by the party for the legal battle would be disclosed at a later date “ for tactical reasons. ”

He said the party might not contest the results of House of Assembly election where he claimed the APC perpetrated all known electoral offences , but that the party ’s National Assembly candidates would challenge the results .

But the state Publicity Secretary of the APC , Ade Ajayi, dismissed the allegations against the party , saying the elections held in the state were peaceful .

Ajayi , however , commended the PDP for deciding to the approach the tribunal .

He said , “ We will meet them there. They are free to go to court . They have the constitutional backing. I commend them for not resorting to violence . When we get to the courts , we will defeat them again because the truth will always prevail .

Politics / Buhari Won’t Change Election Results, Says Presidency by Ngtimes: 6:40pm On Mar 17, 2019
The Presidency has cautioned against a lot of the hate spewing, incitement to violence and the polarizing statements by so-called political leaders as a number of states brace up for supplementary elections prescribed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

It also rejected unfair and ridiculous criticisms of President Muhammadu Buhari’s apparent disinterest in the upcoming elections in some states by party members who wrongfully assume that the President will abuse power by changing results to favour them.
A statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, also noted that some past Presidents of Nigeria were known to interfere in inconclusive elections.
This, he said, was the reason why party members appeared to be upset that the same thing is not happening now.
He added “But President Buhari is a different kind of leader. He swore to defend the constitution and will not veer off from that.
“The constitution of Nigeria gives the President no such powers. It is unfair and ridiculous to criticise President Buhari for not going against the constitution.
“Party members in states where there will be supplementary elections then need to be reminded that they need to work hard to earn their people’s votes, rather than expect President Buhari to manipulate INEC in their favour.
“Interestingly, while members of the ruling APC party were criticising the President for not interfering on their behalf, members of the opposition were condemning the President based on their assumptions that he would definitely interfere, as many in the opposition did while in power.
“Under President Buhari, INEC had been and will be completely independent throughout the elections, free from any interference.
“President Buhari is a man of conviction, and the manipulation of election results goes against everything he stands for. INEC is completely in charge.” he stated

Crime / At Least 70 Dead In Floods In Eastern Indonesia by Ngtimes: 11:01am On Mar 17, 2019
At least 70 people have died and 59 others injured in floods and landslides triggered by torrential rain in Indonesia’s eastern province of Papua, the country's national disaster agency said on Sunday.
The severe flooding in the town of Sentani near the provincial capital Jayapura was caused by torrential rain and subsequent landslides on Saturday, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNDP) said in a statement.
Sixty three people died in the town of Sentani and seven in the Ampera region, according to military officials in Papua province.
Nugroho said that injured people were transported to a hospital in Jayapura.
The search and rescue operation is underway to trace the missing victims, he added.
The number of dead will likely increase since many affected areas have not been reached, Nugroho said.
Last January, 68 people had lost their lives in disaster-hit Sulawesi Island when torrential rain triggered landslides and floods.
Landslides and flooding are common in Indonesia, especially during the monsoon season between October and April, when rain lashes the vast tropical archipelago.

Politics / Opinion: Why It Is Very Wrong To Use Buhari And Integrity In The Same Sentence by Ngtimes: 1:48am On Mar 16, 2019
According to the School of thought,Integrity means following your moral or ethical convictions and doing the right thing in all circumstances, even if no one is watching you. Also another definition of integrity means you are true to yourself and would do nothing that demeans or dishonors you and also the state of being whole and undivided.

Think: As an honest individual, you should ask yourself if truly president buhari is doing the right thing in all circumstances, if indeed he is true to himself like failing to deliver on campaign promises. During 2015 campaigns, President Buhari’s team promised Nigerians heaven and earth. They promised to bring food to our table, they promised to make one dollar equal one naira, they promised to give us 24hours interrupted power supply, they promised to increase Nysc alawee to #50000, they promised to give unemployed graduates #5000 every month. They won the election, Nigerians were expecting change and implementations of campaign promises. It didn’t happen. It was all deceit.

**One of the truest tests of integrity is its blunt refusal to be compromised." - Chinua Achebe W.

**Clement Stone said "Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity."

Think: Does President buhari have the same courage to say no when things are going wrong. when the senate proposed an electoral bill which will put an end too irregularities in electoral process like rigging, snatching of ballot boxes and so on, president buhari refuse to accent to the bill for selfish reasons.. he knows with such a bill he will not be able to get those massive high manipulated figures from the north again, so he refused. A person with integrity serving the country will always put the country's interest as number priority and not selfishly putting his own interest ahead of the country's interest. No integrity. Take a look at Nigeria security challenges, economic problems..Buhari government failed to solve any of those problems, a person of integrity would have resigned cos he failed on his promises just like how Finland's entire government resigned over its failure to achieve a key policy goal on social welfare and healthcare reform. Lets also take a look at the just concluded elections in Nigeria. Such a big show of shame by the Mr integrity government to use its power to seduce, frustrate and intimidate Inec, As if that wasnt enough, they also turned our security officials to their party agents and dangerous tools to rigged out the desires of the masses.

** DO YOU KNOW THAT ON MARCH 8, 2019 "Finland's entire government resigned over its failure to achieve a key policy goal on social welfare and healthcare reform."

That is integrity, the government failed to achieve part of its duty and honorably resigned...president buhari and his government will never do such, So where is the integrity we are talking about.

**INTEGRITY is mainly not about i don't steal money.

So, its is very wrong to use President Buhari an integrity in the same sentence..They are two parallel lines that will never meet or cross each other

Politics / INEC Will Use Observers’ Experiences For Future Polls – Yakubu by Ngtimes: 7:55pm On Mar 13, 2019
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has said that the commission will utilize the lessons and experiences of the accredited observers for the conduct of future elections.

He gave the assurance on Wednesday in Abuja at the formal de-briefing of accredited observers for the 2019 General Elections.

Represented by a National Commissioner, Prof. Antonia Okoosi-Simbine, Yakubu acknowledged that the observation of the 2019 election must have presented its challenges not only on the account of the vast nature and terrain of the country with over 120,000 polling units and voting points, but also on account of the peculiar or additional challenges presented by the shift and rescheduling of the dates of the elections by the commission.

“One solace in my view lies in the contribution you are collectively making by your participation in the consolidation of Nigeria’s democratic growth. I am also delighted by the fact that a vast majority of those deployed by your various groups returned safely to their destinations without major hitches.

“Going by the Commission’s record, a total of 120 domestic and 36 foreign groups were accredited for the 2019 General Election. Submissions by the observer groups also indicated that over 85,000 Observers were deployed and participated in each of the two elections.

‘’At the close of the sale and subsequently close of registration portal, it was discovered that 41,063 candidates created profile and procured either UTME or DE ePINS but were unable to complete their registration formalities after initiating the process.

“In view of this consideration the Board has opened the registration portal effective from Wednesday 13th March, 2019 for all candidates with either UTME or DE ePINS to complete their registration formalities.

“The portal would be closed on Friday, 15th March, 2019 by 12midnight.

“This opportunity is for only candidates who had created profile and procured UTME or DE ePINS before the close of registration portal as the sale of ePINS had since been closed.

“Please endeavor to register before Friday midnight if you are holding any of the ePINS (UTME/DE),” the statement added .
