An informant to bandits in Zamfara state has revealed that over 5000 bandits operate in different part of the state . The state commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs , Alhaji Bello Dankande who disclosed this said the informant made the startling revelations during security interrogation. According to him, the informant revealed bandits had three (3 ) camps with over five thousand (5000 ) members . “ The informant after he was arrested by security confessed that armed bandits have three (3 )different camps in Maradun and they have more than 5000 armed members ” , he added . Dankande who met with officials of the Directorate of Animals and Livestock and Forestry said the state government had established check points for the banning of illegal transportation of firewood and animals across the state. He lamented that “ informants are the major threats in fighting the bandits in the state ”. According to him, transporters of firewood were alleged to be aiding armed banditry through the supply of some necessities such as petrol, pure water , bread and drinks to their den. The commissioner who commended the efforts of Governor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar and federal government towards security in the state, maintained that issue of security should not be politicized . He disclosed that state government has placed a reward of three hundred thousand naira (N300 , 000 ) to any person that reveals information on bandits . “ People should understand that informants are our major problems in fighting insurgency and those informants live within us , we have to sincerely check them out , reveal them and hand them to security to flush them out of us. ”. He appealed to religious leaders to continue praying for the peace, security and development in the state, adding that all hands must be on deck to ensure total security of lives and property. http://www.thengtimes.com/2019/01/zamfara-over-5-000-bandits-operate-in-3.html?m=1 |
The Nigeria Labour Congress has said the plight of pensioners has not been ignored in the negotiation on new minimum wage between the union and the Federal Government. The Federal Government’s delegation will meet the leaders of labour unions on Monday (today) at the Ministry of Labour and Employment, with the Minister of Labour, Dr Chris Ngige, presiding. The parties met for seven hours on Friday but it was inconclusive and both parties agreed to adjourn until Monday. In an exclusive interview with the General Secretary of the union, Peter Ozo-Eson, said, “Although the tripartite committee was set up to discuss a new minimum wage, the committee liberally made a recommendation that the government needed to look at the possibility of instituting a minimum pension. The committee could not have worked that out and say this is the amount that should be paid to pensioners because it is not within its terms of preference. “But they made a recommendation that there was a need to institute minimum pension because the pensioners were taking ridiculously low amount that could not sustain them. The pensioners union is an affiliate of the NLC and memoranda were submitted in that respect and the committee made recommendation in that respect.”The NLC spokesman added that Federal Government were four years behind in the remittance of pension fund to a bond which existed before the new pension scheme was instituted, noting that the NLC had confronted the FG over the issue and taken the matter to the National Assembly. He said, “To start with, the Pension Act 2014 as amended clearly deals with those issues (of remittance). It is a law that imposes penalty for such thing. But who enforces the law? It is the government. If a company takes workers’ money through deduction, it is supposed to add its own and transmit it (to relevant pension agency). If you prosecute some companies and make examples of them, using the prescription in the law, people will start doing the right thing. “From the beginning, state governments were not part of the contributory pension. Some have now agreed with their workers and come on board so many of the states that have joined did so not too long back.” http://www.thengtimes.com/2019/01/minimum-wage-nlc-meets-fg-again-says.html?m=1 |

The Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to Senate President, Yusuph Olaniyonu, on Thursday stated that if there is any doctored version of the Christmas Day radio interview by his boss, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, the Minister of Information, Mr. Lai Mohammed, who presented it should be asked where he got it from. Accusing Mohammed as being the author of such a doctored recording, Olaniyonu in a statement in Abuja, stated that the radio stations were simply instructed to do a repeat broadcast of the interview following the requests by stakeholders at various meetings held by the Senate President around the state. “Nobody produced another tape or instructed anybody to edit any part of the tape and nothing like that was done. That is why the same instruction was passed to all the stations, including Harmony FM, which is under the supervision of Mr. Lai Mohammed and the Sobi FM owned by an APC gubernatorial aspirant. The Sobi FM did not air the repeat broadcast because they said they had another Programme scheduled for that Sunday morning. “On my way to Pategi town in Kwara North Senatorial District that Sunday morning, I listened to the repeat broadcast on the car stereo and the area concerning the Offa case was clearly there. If there was any plan to doctor or edit the tape, would we do such a thing with Mr. Mohammed’s Harmony FM or propose that to Sobi FM whose position is well known to us? So, if Mohammed suddenly created and produced a recording of the interview different from what was repeated by the four radio stations on December 30, 2018, then he should be asked how and where he got it”, Olaniyonu stated. He added that it was good that Mohammed at least admitted that Dr. Saraki donated N10 million to people in Offa but that the money was meant for the traders that lost goods in the inferno that razed the market in the town and not for the victims of the robbery incident. “I remember as a member of the Senate President’s Delegation to the Olofa of Offa’s palace to commiserate with the people on the sad incident of the robbery that it was during that visit that Mrs. McCarthy, the secretary of the Offa Development Union (ODU) raised the issue of the earlier incident on the market fire incident and Dr. Saraki promised that N10m would be made available the following day. “The question people should ask the Minister is: How much has he ever donated to provide succour for the people of Offa for whatever purpose? He is only trying to draw political capital from the sad occurrences that happened to his own people. We are not unmindful of the fact that he continued to talk about the Offa incident as a way of playing cheap politics on the misfortune that befell some people. We urge him to move on to talking about what development projects he has brought to Offa as a member of the Federal Executive Council representing Kwara State”, he added. The aide to the Senate President noted that while the information Minister continues to grand-stand over a dubious and Pyrrhic victory recorded by his party in a bye- election in which he led security agencies to inflict violence on his people, the results had only produced an illegitimate legislator who is largely shunned and viewed with scorn by members of his community. “We are not surprised that a ‘visiting’ politician like Mr. Mohammed found it strange that Dr. Saraki held meetings with canvassers and stakeholders across the local government areas during the Christmas holiday. As a grassroots mobilizer, this is what he has always done since he first contested in an election in 2003. Well, a Lagos based, ‘seasonal’ politician like the minister would not know. Now, he should know that the electioneering campaign in Kwara State is always done on ward to ward basis and not by staying in Abuja or the state capital. As a matter of fact, the campaign is yet to begin. “At this point, Mr. Mohammed should tell the public which faction of APC he belongs to in Kwara State because the last time we checked, he is a member of the Bolarinwa faction which has been declared illegal and all its activities and candidates nullified by the Court. He should let us know if he has now joined the Balogun-Fulani faction or as he is fond of doing, he will simply stay in Lagos and be a poll observer in the coming elections. As he struggles to answer the above questions, let it be known that this will be my last word on this issue”, Olaniyonu stated. http://www.thengtimes.com/2019/01/offa-robbery-saraki-reacts-to-lai.html?m=1 |

A Federal High Court in Abuja has refused a request by a senator, Dino Melaye, for police officers to vacate his residence and desist from further attempts at arresting him. Mr Melaye had approached the court after the police officers laid a siege to his residence following allegations by the senator that the police planned to poison him. Mr Melaye also asked the court to stop the police from what he described as acting in a manner threatening his life. The requests were presented as ex-parte applications after Mr Melaye asked the court for enforcement of his fundamental rights in the same court. An ex-parte application could have allowed the judge to grant the order without hearing from the police. In a ruling on the ex-parte application on Thursday, a judge, N. E. Maha, refused the application, but ruled that the substantive matter be granted accelerated hearing. The police have insisted on arresting Mr Melaye, accusing him of involvement in the killing of a police officer. The controversial senator is already facing two separate charges of attempted suicide and allegedly arming criminal suspects. http://www.thengtimes.com/2019/01/court-refuses-dino-melayes-request-to.html?m=1 |
The development according to THISDAY checks might not be unconnected with the recent Supreme Court ruling in Abuja that ceded some land to the people of Erin-Ile. The two communities of Offa and Erin-Ile had been at each other throats over a parcel of land for over 50 years. The state government created a buffer zone between the two towns which has since been manned by the men of the military and police in the area. Ahmed, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Muyideen Akorede, yesterday urged the people of both communities to refrain from publishing or otherwise circulating unauthorised interpretations of the said judgement. According to the statement, “the state government is employing dialogue as a means of finding an amicable and sustainable solution to the dispute.” Ahmed stressed that the state government will continue to uphold its constitutional mandate of upholding the welfare and security of all citizens and residents of Offa, Erin-Ile and indeed all communities in the state. He therefore urged residents to go about their normal and lawful activities as the government is currently in consultation with leaders of both communities to resolve the issue. http://www.thengtimes.com/2019/01/offa-erin-ile-land-dispute-kwara-gov.html?m=1 |
Yusuph Olaniyonu, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has advised Alhaji Lai Mohammed to stop using the tragic loss of lives in the Offa robbery as a political tool. This is even as he dared him to prove his claim that subsequent broadcasts of the Senate President’s syndicated Christmas morning interview were manipulated. The minister had called out Saraki for lying that he donated N10 million to the victims of Offa Robbery. In a statement signed by him today and made available to newsmen, Olaniyonu called on Mohammed to respect the memories of the victims of the Offa robbery. “After reading the laughable and entirely empty statement issued by the Minister today, we challenge him, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to bring out the two recordings of the live transmission and the repeat broadcast to show the public where it is doctored. “Just to be clear, the repeat of the interview was based on popular demand by Kwarans during some of the consultative meetings the Senate President had in the three Senatorial districts of Kwara State. “Mr. Mohammed should be well-aware that this interview was aired live, hence, his insinuation that certain sections were subsequently doctored puts the reputation of the 5 radio stations that aired the interview and the 4 that aired the repeat in jeopardy. This also includes Harmony FM, an FRCN station that is under the Minister of Information’s supervision,” Olaniyonu said. The Special Adviser also questioned the logic behind Mohammed’s assertion that the N10 million donated by Saraki was to aid the people who lost their goods during the inferno in Offa Market and that it was used in Ilorin. “How possible can it be for something that was donated in Offa to be used in Ilorin? Additionally, Lai Mohammed should do the public a favour by telling the public what he has done or donated to alleviate the plight of the people of Offa at any time. “If he is attacking Saraki for donating millions to the victims of a burnt market in Offa and not those who sustained injury during the robbery incident, what has he done at any time to help the people of that town since he became one of the ‘guest politicians’ in the state?” he queried. Olaniyonu further challenged Lai Mohammed to stop his grandstanding about his political clout in Kwara, stating that the Minister’s popularity is entirely non-existent. “Lai Mohammed keeps on grandstanding with false and baseless assertions of his entirely non-existent popularity. If he is as popular in Kwara as he claims, how did he perform in the 2003 polls as gubernatorial candidate? “If he is indeed known and accepted in Kwara, why is it that his son is running for a House of Assembly seat in Lagos — and not in Kwara?” Olaniyonu called on the Minister of Information to immediately desist from using the tragic loss of lives in the Offa Robbery as a political propaganda tool. “If Lai Mohammed has any contrary evidence, we challenge him to go to court or end this blatant disrespect and disregard for the memories of the victims lost in the Offa Robbery incident,” Olaniyonu stated. http://www.thengtimes.com/2018/12/offa-robbery-prove-your-allegation.html?m=1 . |
In a strongly worded statement made available to Vanguard on Monday, the Nigerian Governor’s Forum, made it clear that they would have paid the N30,000 but regretted their inability to do so due to what they described as ‘times are hard’ and because of financial constraints and other limitations that have tied the hands of many states. The statement, which was signed by the spokesman for the NGF, Abdulrazque Bello-Barkindo, was in response to a claim by the NLC that governors were simply refusing to pay the new wage and that those who diverted billions shelled out by the federal government as bailout funds should be probed. The governors castigated the NLC for demanding that their financial books should be made known to the union, saying that having shown their financial status to the President during two meetings on the minimum wage, there were under no obligation to show same to the NLC. The governors also stated pointedly that having made a marginal increment of N22.500 from the current N18,000, they had nothing more to add to the minimum wage and it was left for the NLC to consider and accept that as what was available and possible for now. The statement said: “Let it be known that governors have met the President twice on this matter and presented their books to buttress their point. First, a batch of state governors, led by the NGF Chairman, Governor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar of Zamfara State, in company of governors Ambode of Lagos, Ugwuanyi of Enugu, Bagudu of Kebbi attended a closed door meeting with the President where the financial standing of six states, one each from all the geo-political regions in the country, were shown to the President. “Shortly after that, the President requested all the states to forward their books, their revenues, both internally generated and their earnings from the Federation Account along with their other sources of revenue, for examination. The president appears satisfied with the governors’ position, thus the decision to set up a new committee. “It is important to add that, there has never been a time in this country, when states have embarked on a more aggressive revenue drive than they are doing today. And this is without exception or prejudice to any state. “To put the records straight, governors are not under any obligation, by law, to show their books to the NLC. But they have, in their pursuit of the understanding of the union, done so, not once, but several times over, with a view to letting NLC know that what they are asking for is neither realistic nor sustainable. Yet, NLC remains adamant that its will must be done, or the heavens will fall. “The president at his last meeting with governors (December 15, 2018) had admonished them (governors) to expect harsher economic tides from New Year’s, thus validating governors’ fears that even those states that had hitherto looked comfortable financially, may in the course of the new year, falter. “Moreover, since that last meeting, of the middle of December, between the Governors and Mr. President, the economists of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum Secretariat have been working closely with the relevant departments in all the states of the federation, and looking into other ways of collating financial standing of states that will help the President in ameliorating the situation. “Already, revenue to states has dropped drastically while demands by competing needs keep rising astronomically. Last year alone, revenue to states dropped from N800bn when the Tripartite Committee was appointed (November 2017) to between N500bn and N600bn by the time Ms. Amma Pepple submitted its report in October 2018. “Moreover, state governors are making concerted efforts to improve education, health and infrastructure and for this, would not therefore dedicate their states’ entire resources to workers’ salaries alone, knowing that workers constitute less than 5% of the nation’s population. In that regard, governors emphatically announced, collectively, that no state would devote more than 50% of its revenue to salaries. “To therefore insist that states must oblige the NLC its demands, regardless of the economic gloom that stares the nation in the face is most unpatriotic and a deliberate attempt to hold the nation, especially the president, to ransom, this being an election year. “At this point it is important to remind the NLC that most governors exhibited a high sense of responsibility and concern for the plight of workers by ensuring that most of them were paid their December salaries ahead of time. Some even received several months’ salary arrears that was owed them, and they are happy with their governors. “This is not the time for the NLC to destroy the existing conviviality that is already building-up between workers and their governors, especially in those states of the federation where governors are stepping up to the plate with the right decisions,” the governors said. http://www.thengtimes.com/2018/12/we-cant-afford-to-pay-n3000-minimum.html?m=1 |
Ten troops have been killed on Niger's border with Nigeria in a joint operation by the two countries against "bandits", Nigerien Defence Minister Kalla Moutari said on Monday. "Five Nigerien and five Nigerian" troops and 11 enemy fighters were killed in the operation, launched against gangs in the Maradi region at the weekend, he told AFP. "The Nigerian defence and security forces are identifying the bodies of the bandits," Moutari also said, according to a TV report from Maradi, where he went to attend the funeral of the dead Nigerien troops. Niger is one of several countries in the impoverished Sahel region to be hit by jihadist violence. Officials often call Islamist attackers "bandits" but a security source said the joint operation targeted criminal gangs that plague the Niger-Nigeria border, holing up in dense forests. The fighting "began on Saturday in the middle of the morning," the source said, adding that several troops from both countries were also wounded. The groups are blamed for kidnapping, theft and cattle rustling. The troubled region lies on part of Niger's southern-central border abutting the northwestern Nigerian state of Zamfara. In August, Niger sent reinforcements to the area, and in September began a three-week operation with Nigeria that led to the death of at least 30 "bandits," the interior minister, Bazoum Mohamed, had said on October 16. The authorities were now "fully in control" of the region "and are in the middle of mopping-up operations," he had maintained. http://www.thengtimes.com/2018/12/bandits-kills-10troops-at-niger-nigeria.html?m=1 |
Nuhu Ribadu, pioneer chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has handed over his campaign offices and buses to the reelection bid of President Muhammadu Buhari. Ribadu who sought and lost the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2019 poll, said the opponents of Buhari will be “roundly defeated”. He said the February presidential election is a referendum between a past that should forever be forgotten and a new chapter of probity and accountability. He spoke in Yola, Adamawa capital, at a ceremony to hands off his gubernatorial campaign structure to Buhari. He said he and his supporters would work assiduously to ensure the victory of Buhari in Adamawa. “There is consensus among Nigerians of goodwill. Nobody wants return of those faces that are synonymous with our failure as a country. We have moved on, we should not allow them to dragged us back,” he said. “For the past three years, EFCC and others have been struggling to recover wealth stolen from this country within just a few years. We are happy now that such wanton stealing is not happening. We should not allow those who have no problem with stealing our wealth to get back on the wheels.” He said the people of Adamawa have no reason not to support Buhari due to a number of achievements of the administration. “This state is a farming state. Our farmers have been supported through Anchor Borrowers. We now have fertilizer all over,” he said. “In terms of infrastructure, Adamawa is witnessing massive revolution. A number of roads are currently ongoing in the state. We have never had it so good. “Many communities in Adamawa state were under Boko Haram occupation. The capital, Yola, was being threatened but today everyone is at peace, all displaced persons have been relocated to their towns.” http://www.thengtimes.com/2018/12/ribadu-donates-offices-campaign-buses.html?m=1

Thousands of Nigerians will miss their visa appointments as the United States embassy in Abuja and its consulate in Lagos have shutdown indefinitely. This implies that persons who have applied for tourist, study , business visas, immigrant visas or any other travel document will have to cancel their plans. The US embassy in Nigeria said in a Facebook post that the development was caused by the government shutdown in the US. The statement read , “ Due to the current US government shutdown, the American centres located in the embassy , Abuja and Consulate -General , Lagos are unfortunately closed . They will re- open once the US government shutdown is resolved . Sorry for any inconvenience to our valued patrons . ” The executive arm of government led by President Donald Trump and the legislative arm have been at loggerheads for nearly two months over Trump ’ s attempt to build a wall along the Mexican border., Building a wall was one of Trump’ s major campaign promises as part of efforts to curb illegal migration and crime . He had boasted during his campaign that the Mexican government would pay for the wall . However, with the refusal of the Mexican government to fund the wall , the President approached the US legislative, asking the bi -cameral institution to provide $5bn which would be used in funding the wall . The Congress, however , rejected Trump’ s proposal . On December 11, Trump held a televised meeting with Speaker-designee , Nancy Pelosi , and Senate Minority Leader , Chuck Schumer , in which he asked them to support $5bn in funding for the border wall . They refused and Trump said : “ I am proud to shut down the government for border security … I will be the one to shut the government down. I ’ m not going to blame you for it … I will take the mantle . I will be the one to shut it down. ” Three days later , Politico reported that Trump was willing to sign a bill that delayed a government shutdown into 2019 and the new Congress. On December 19, the Senate unanimously passed a continuing resolution , the Further Additional Continuing Appropriations Act, 2019, lasting until February 8, 2019. http://www.thengtimes.com/2018/12/thousands-to-miss-visa-appointments-as.html?m=1 |
Federal Polytechnic Offa, a PHCN sub-station and other important property hitherto belonging in Offa communities may be ceded to Erin -Ile community as the Supreme Court ratified a 45- year -old judgment in favour of the latter. The age- long boundary dispute , which had led to communal clashes and loss of lives between Offa and Erin -Ile communities in Kwara State , may be renewed as Erin -Ile community vows to implement the newly confirmed judgement of the Supreme Court . The latest action of the Erin -Ile community followed the recent judgement of the Supreme Court on December 14, 2018, which affirmed the same court ’ s decision of December 10, 1973 that the parcel of land that formed the boundary between the two communities belongs to Erin -Ile . The judgement, if executed, will lead to the takeover of lands on which the multimillion naira Offa Descendants Union Secretariat , Avalon Hotels , buildings and some Federal Government institutions such as the Federal Polytechnic, Offa and PHCN substation are sited. But Offa Descendants Union has appealed to the Kwara State Government to “ call the people of Erin- Ile to order , ” alleging that the latter only wants to execute what ODU described as “ fake judgement . ” In the suit number SC. 516/2012 between Mr . Abdulganiyu Adeniran, Mr . Abdulateef Aroyehun Lawal ( for Adeniyi Apata Family of Offa ) vs HRH Oba Abdulganiyu Ajibola Olusookun II Elerin of Erin -Ile , five justices of the court affirmed the report of the 1973 administrative judicial panel headed by Justice Daramola . The lead judgement was read by Justice Mary Ukaego Peter-Odili. Other justices included Olabode Rhodes -Vivour , Ejembi Eko, Paul Adamu Galumje and Sidi Dauda Bage. Addressing a Press Conference , the National President of Erin -Ile Progressive Union , Samuel Olu Alabi , said , “ We got a Supreme Court judgement December 10th that same year confirming the boundary of Erin- Ile as far as NEPA office — the present Offa Descendants Union and several other places — as belonging to Erin- Ile . “ But, unlike in 1973 that we did not take steps , this time around , we will take necessary steps in accordance with the judgement. When and how we are going to do it is not yet determined. ” In reaction , the people of Offa called on Kwara State Government to , as a matter of urgency , warn the people of Erin- Ile to desist from “ causing unnecessary tension due to the spreading of false claims and reports. ” The warning was contained in a protest letter by Offa Descendants Union , written and signed by its National President , Najim Yaasin , and made available to our correspondent. http://www.thengtimes.com/2018/12/fed-poly-offa-others-affected-in-land.html?m=1 |
Looking at The APC Presidential campaign council constituted yesterday, this is what I found; 1. Vice Chairman North: Sen. George Akume- PDP Governor for 8years. 2. Vice Chairman South: Sen. Ken Nnamani- Former Senate President under PDP 3. D.G: Rotimi Ameachi: 8 years Speaker House of Assembly and 7 years Governor under PDP. Spent 15 of the 16 years in PDP. 4. North West Zonal Director: Aliyu Wammakko- PDP Governor for 8years and Senator for 3 years. 5. South West Zonal Director: Olusola Oke- Former PDP National legal adviser for 9years. 6. South South Zonal Director: Godswill Akpabio- Former SSG, former Governor for 8 years and until 4months ago, was the PDP minority leader in the Senate. None of these people spent less than 13years as PDP members. Mathematically, that is 81% of the 16 years of destruction In one breathe, you say PDP destroyed Nigeria for 16 years. In another breathe, you need this same destroyers to help you to "change" Nigeria. Who is deceiving who? These are interesting times... |
The Army has said it will coordinate a relocation operation for residents of Baga following in view of the ongoing military operations in the area. According to a statement by Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu, the relocation operation is to be out in conjunction with the Borno state government. The army said it has been observed that some “unscrupulous” individuals with likely sinister motives within and outside Borno State are trying to create panic and unnecessary humanitarian problems for undisclosed reasons. “It has come to our attention that these people are plotting to instigate the inhabitants of Bama, Dikwa and Monguno communities to abandon their communities and relocate to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camps for undisclosed reasons,” the Army said. The army urged inhabitants of the three Borno towns and the general public to discountenance all calls and remain calm. Colonel Onyema said that the Theatre Command, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, and other Security Agencies will shed more light on the issue in a Security Council meeting with the Borno State Government, scheduled to hold on Monday 31st December 2018. “We would like to further state that there is no basis for the people of Bama, Dikwa and Monguno to vacate their respective communities. However, Operation LAFIYA DOLE troops in conjunction with Borno State Government are working towards relocating the residents of Baga, to safer locations in view of the ongoing military operations in the area. “Members of the public are advised to remain calm as the military is in firm control to guarantee their safety and security. We would like to warn that any attempt to cause further panic through this false alarm would be viewed very seriously,” the army spokesman said. http://www.thengtimes.com/2018/12/baga-residents-to-be-relocated-as-army.html?m=1

The Atiku Mandate Group, an association loyal to the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 polls, has alleged that cattle breeders endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari because he protects them. Three days ago, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) announced that it had chosen to support Buhari over Atiku in the 2019 presidential election. Reacting in a statement, Sunny Areh, spokesman of the pro-Atiku group, said the endorsement is just like that of Boko Haram. Areh said though strange, the Atiku camp is not surprised because of the “covert relationship” of the group with Buhari whom he described as its life patron. “The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria has drawn the is certainly one of the most destabilising groups that have wreaked havoc on Nigerians,” Areh said in a statement. “This looks more like an endorsement by Boko Haram… it’s an endorsement of failure to protect lives and properties and a confirmation that there has been a covert and existing relationship between Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association and its life patron, the President. “It is strange but we are not surprised because being life patron of Miyetti Allah, he has guaranteed the group the forceful land seizures from citizens across the country for their cattle colonies. The endorsement is a reciprocity of being the protector-in-chief of its atrocities. “It is laughable that an association that acknowledges mass murders by its members is pledging to collaborate with security agencies to fish out bad eggs within its fold, when it has always been known that the group enjoys state protection.” He asked Nigerians to be on the alert over the group’s claim to mobilise 20 million votes for Buhari, saying there might be “underhand strategies to use cattle grazing routes to caravan aliens into the country and also engage in cross border voting”. http://www.thengtimes.com/2018/12/an-endorsement-of-failure-pro-atiku.html?m=1

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has sent an urgent appeal to two UN special rapporteurs urging them to “prevail upon the government of President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to reach an agreement to end the ongoing strike action by ASUU, which continues to have real and dire consequences on the right to higher education, specifically university education, as guaranteed by the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, to which Nigeria is a state party.” In the urgent appeal dated 28 December 2018 and signed by SERAP senior legal adviser Bamisope Adeyanju, the organization said: “By failing to prevent and end the ongoing strike action by ASUU, the Nigerian government has defied and breached the explicit requirements of the right to equal access to higher education by Nigerian children and young people, under article 13(2)(c) of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.” The urgent appeal sent to Ms. Koumbou Boly Barry, Special Rapporteur on the right to education and Professor Philip Alston, Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights argues that: “The failure by the Nigerian government to reach an agreement with ASUU has also implicitly made access to higher education a privilege of the rich and well-to-do rather than a right of every Nigerian child and young person, as students in private schools continue to attend classes while those in public universities stay at home. According to SERAP, “The failure to end the ongoing strike action by ASUU is also a fundamental breach of the right to higher education without discrimination or exclusion, as strike actions continue to penalise economically disadvantaged parents who have no means or lack the capacity to pay to send their children to private schools. Against prevailing cases of lecturers demanding sex from unwilling students, a candidate of the Alliance National Party (ANP) for the Adamawa Central Senatorial Zone, Salihu Garba, has outlined a bill for a law to punish offending lecturers. “Our female students are increasingly falling victims of lecturers who ask for sex that many of the girls are unwilling to give, for which reason such students are often made to fail papers that they would otherwise pass,” Garba said during a chat with newsmen in Yola. He contended that lots of female students suffer silently because of lack of specific law and intervention body that they can complain to and be sure that they would get justice. “The law in view would provide for panels of experts to examine every complaint of victimization and recommend appropriate remedies and sanctions,” he said, adding that, “We really need such a law for panels of experienced dons so that if a female suffers undue frustration from her lecturer, if your lectuer marks you down because he hates you for what he asks illegally but doesn’t get, the law and its provissions can be applied.” Offering further insights on the proposed law, he said, “The appropriate pannels under the law will recieve petitions from students indicating particular questionable test or exam papers, and the given panel will remark the paper and award the appropriate score. That will determine the truth of the matter and the student’s petition treated accordingly.” He said the recent case of a professor jailed for demanding sex from a student was among an insignificant number of duly prosecuted cases, but that the law he has in mind would facilitate a lot more cases and put lecturers in check. A lecturer with the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Professor Richard Akindele, was earlier this month sentenced to a two-year jail term after he was found guilty of demanding sex from his student, Monica Osagie, whom he threatened with failure in his course should she refuse. In the widely reported case, the judge of the Federal High Court in Oshogbo, Maurine Onyetenu, asserted that sex-for-marks lecturers must be punished as a disincentive to other undisciplined lecturers. She said, “This kind of issue is too rampant in our institutions of leaening. We send children to school, they come home to tell us that lectuers want to sleep with them. Even primary school pupils are complaining.” Akindele had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charge against him when he was first arraigned before the court last month. The case had been a subject of national discourse since April when Monica first cried out against him. http://www.thengtimes.com/2018/12/sex-for-marks-senatorial-candidate.html?m=1 |

Despite being labeled as the giant of Africa, the general feeling in Nigeria and the entire world is that Africa most populous nation could do much better, given her natural resources, capacity, capability and potential. In the years after her independence, Nigeria was regarded as a land flowing with honey and milk but nowadays over 30% Nigerians search for greener pastures abroad. Nigerians mostly travel abroad to countries like Canada, United State of America, Spain, and Dubai, France. This situation has degenerated and gotten so worse that many Nigerians wish the colonial master would come back to rule Nigeria. As great as Nigeria is as a nation, there are so many problems pulling the country back and preventing it from moving forward. Being the head of this nation is prestigious, but washing the nation clean if her problems is an exhilarating mission. The complexity and magnitude of the problems create confusion among the populace. The leaders also face the same confusion. The leaders don’t know where to start to tackle the myriad of problems. That is why there different views and programs at different levels of governance. For example, while some governors are focusing on the provision of water, others are working on roads, yet others focus on environmental sanitation and infrastructure. The federal government seems to be focusing on roads, among others. There is no coordinated and coherent agenda among different tiers of government in the country.
