omohayek: Wike's action is a textbook case of short-term thinking in action. Does he really think RSUST is comparable in any way with the institutions these students are currently attending? What kind of "leader" prefers to save a few dollars right now instead of seeing such clever young people as an investment in the future? We praise the likes of Okonjo-Iweala, but would she have been able to get where she did without being able to study at places like Harvard and MIT?
I can understand phasing the program out while letting the current beneficiaries complete their studies, but there is just no excuse for cutting them all off just like that: at the least tell them they can do 2 years more but most find funding elsewhere after that. I don't buy the budget excuse either, as even with the low oil prices, there's just no way that the Rivers State government would be unable to fund a few graduate students abroad. if only all the money used to sponsor those students from 2008/2009 till date was invested in RSUST!! the university would have been better if not of world standard by now!! |

TonyeBarcanista: It isn't about right or wrong but more of seeing things from the right perspective. I'm not a Chartered Economist nor a guru in the field, in fact I never claimed to be one.
However, sensing the downward trend of the our main export(the oil) and the fact that our reserve wasn't fit enough to accomodate naira defence, I made case for devaluation of the currency to ease the reserve of its stress as well as for the government to embrace austerity(cutting overheads and their own remuneration) in favor of capital projects and fixing our infrastructures/promoting policies to favor quality local production. This I believe would yield long term benefit and shut out our over-dependency on foreign products. Though it would be tough in the first phase.
To address the over-circulation of the dollar, I suggested that we adopt the Egypt style instead of trying to bully the dollar when we are yet to get the capacity to produce locally.
Anyway, we all want the economy to improve. But I don't think praying for hoarders of the dollar to release cash or trying to beg them is the way forward. Government should be concerned with boosting local production and fix tight import tax on product that we have capacity of producing locally. As For the naira, they should allow the marjet determine it. My brother, what they need to do is not rocket science! they know what they are doing and some fools will be cheering them on!! They are playing politics with our lives, simply try and reduce foreign imports by boosting local production and watch the naira soar!!! |

And in an inteview I say online, a reporter asked an official why its so, his reply was nigeria can afford it. An on d power in cameroon, if u pay 5naira for two hour power per day for a month and I pay 15naira for 20-24 hour per day in a month, who is paying more? abeg wetin kwansine me for Una matter? |

grandlexuz: You do not know what you are saying Mr Niccur! Your original statement insinuated Nigerians pay higher for everything! You would have said Nigerians pay higher than Ghanaians for everything.(Which still is not the case) For your information Cameroon produces oil that serves its domestic purpose with the excess being exported. As a matter of fact we have a well functioning refinery that serves even Tchad. We generate our own Power through hydroelectricity and it functions 24/7.
Nigeria and Ghana are both 5000+ Km away from the UK! Flight prices are not solely dependent on kilometers Mr Nicur. However a quick inquiry from a flight agent shows both fares are in the same bracket. Always do your research before you make generalised statements! Wetin come concern me for this matter naw? |

He said, “President Buhari has travelled to 24 countries in eight months, and will be spending 16 out of the 29 days in February outside the country, with over $500,000 being spent on estacode while the Presidential Air Fleet, which includes fuelling of the planes and allowances for crew members is said to be in the range of $500,000.
“The President’s entourage obviously collects travel allowances in dollars on official rate of N199 and come back to Nigeria to change it at the open market rate of N400. That must be the reason they encourage the President to be junketing abroad when life is becoming unbearable for Nigerians.” - Fayose 2016 |

automatix: it's a huge problem. Most times when you guys talk like this, it's just as if NIGERIA has readily available alternatives.
What is the government doing to encourage local production of varying products and services? NOTHING!
I for one would love to change the meat industry in Nigeria but I can't get the help I need. I had to apply to an organization for grants and I just hope I win the grant.
If we had 1000 of a dangote, Nigeria will be far better than it it's today. If the monies stolen were used to build industries,Nigeria will be leading.
It's simple yet these leaders just make it hard. Sometimes I ask whether it's pure wickedness or outright ignorance. God bless you my brother!! I don't understand how people think at a times |

magicminister: you are high and stupid at the same time. First of all, the 5 dollar payment i made was in order to recharge an app on my phone called boss revolution. If there was a cheaper alternative from Nigeria, i would gladly be using it.
Besides, while other countries are investing heavily in their education and health sector, we are trying to thwart the dreams of those schooling abroad and asking them to school in Nigeria while 99.9999% of the children of the political elites are schooling abroad. For crying out loud, some of the biggest successes from Nigeria were all trained abroad.
I would recommend that the government creates attractive incentives to bring back our best brains schooling and working outside the country. abeg ask am where zahria Buhari and her siblings dey school? and how they pay school fees? |

Bevista: It's not just about seeing the video, there are a couple of things to note about the whole $1 = N1 story. --- (1) Buhari was claimed to have made that statement in an open campaign ground in Owerri, yet it was only NAN that was able to report what he said. Every other story reported by any other newspaper on the subject quotes NAN as the source. I dare anybody to give me a link to any credible newspaper on the subject that does not quote NAN. (2) Even the so called story reported by NAN and every other newspaper does not have any quote directly from Buhari saying that. The only quote attributed to him is when he said that it was unacceptable for the the dollar to be exchanging at over N200. Yet the original reporter of that story felt justified to come up with that ridiculous and sensational headline. I dare anybody to point me to any credible newspaper where the exact words of Buhari were "quoted" about what he said. --- Quite frankly, that a lot of Nigerians seem to regurgitate that $1 = N1 line over and over again only goes to show how mischievous we are in distorting facts or maybe it shows how shallow we are in differentiating opinion from facts. Oga oya read and explain to me http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/03/ill-make-naira-equal-in-value-to-dollar-says-buhari/ |
