Some civil society organizations yesterday in Benin City, Edo State urged members of the international community to as a matter of urgency stop President Mohammadu Buhari in their countries so he can stay at home and address serious national issues.
The groups under the aegis of Talakawa Parliament Returnees Foundation and Traders Welfare Union of Nigeria lamented the lingering economic crunch that has bedevilled the country, bringing untold hardship on her citizens.
Leaders of the civil society groups who led the peaceful protest in Benin included president of Talakawa Parliament as well as Returnee Foundation and Traders Welfare Union of Nigeria, Kola Edokapyi and Solomom Okoduwa.
They said it was out of place and painful to see the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and president touring countries of the world without realising the poverty, hunger and unemployment Nigerians were faced with, coupled with the fuel scarcity situation that had continued to bite harder in the last four months.
The groups, which brandished various placards with inscriptions as ‘End Fuel Scarcity Now,’ ‘Kill Corruption, Don’t Kill Nigerians,’ and ‘President Buhari Must Stop the Frequent Foreign Trips,’ decried the untold hardship the country’s citizens were faced with, calling for his resignation from office if he failed to address the plights of Nigerians.
The groups said there was the urgent need to rescue Nigerians from the hardship and plight faced they are facing in the country following the scarcity of fuel nationwide.
The groups added that the product is now sold at exorbitant price across the country for between the N250 and N400 per litre in filling stations, giving the impression that the present administration under President Buhari lacked the capacity to govern the country.
Describing the pains and burden the fuel scarcity has inflicted Nigerians with, the groups noted that Nigerians now sleep in fuel stations for two or more days to purchase petrol, a situation which they frowned at and called on President Buhari to address urgently by ensuring that black marketers were eliminated in the oil sector.
Okoduwa also urged the president to fulfil his campaign promises to Nigerians, saying the citizens were running out of patience with the protracted fuel scarcity.
“How long shall we continue to suffer fuel scarcity? It’s been over four months Nigerians are made to buy petrol at prices of N250 and N400 per litre. We must rise up to fight against bad governance. Today, Nigerians pay for NEPA and what we get is darkness. The president must desist from his too many foreign trips and come back home to plan the country.
“The foreign envoys should stop our president from going overseas for meetings and focus on the problems of Nigerians back home,” Okoduwa said.
For his part, Edokpayi, who expressed dissatisfaction with the way and manner the present government has neglected Nigerians to hunger, poverty and unemployment, said “it is crystal clear, lucid and pellucid that things have fallen apart in the country called Nigeria, as the centre can no longer hold.”
He noted that the youths of the country were leaving the country in droves to other countries in search of greener pasture.
“Our youths are leaving the country on a daily basis; they prefer to relocate to Libya to die while trying to travel to Italy than to live in Nigeria.”
He also noted that the APC federal government had so far failed Nigerians as not much had been achieved since President Buhari’s government came into office 11 months ago.

The former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in an interview with Le Monde, disclosed that the Kidnap of her 83-year-old mother was because she advised the former President, Goodluck Jonathan to remove fuel subsidy.

The 61-year-old former Minister and economist also added that the fight against corruption was the major root of the kidnap, as the abductors demanded that she resigned on live television as ransom.

Speaking on her challenges in the fight against corruption, the former Minister said:“Your answer would take a whole day.

“On my first experience as minister, I wrote a book, Reforming the Unreformable (ed) The MIT Press, 2012). For the second, it was really difficult. Nigeria subsidises fuel. About $ 6.7 billion that it costs, we found that 1.5 billion was fraudulent.

“One importer claimed that his boat was waging its oil while at the other end of the world, according to maritime classification society Lloyd’s Register Marine.

“I told the president that we would stop paying. What happened? They kidnapped my mother, 83 years. During the first three days, their only demand was my resignation. I was supposed to go on television and announce my resignation.

“This was one of the worst moments of my life. Can you imagine what happens in your head if you have to be responsible for the death of your mother?

“I will not go into details, but you must understand that in a country like this… in the fight against corruption, we must be.prepared to pay a personal price. My father asked me not to resign. The president asked me not to resign. At the end, everyone began looking for her, and the kidnappers released (her).”

The former finance Minister blamed the State Governors while speaking on the dwindling oil prices. She maintained that the now complaining state Governors did not allow the former president, Jonathan save for the rainy day.

“Some economists are very concerned for Nigeria, which could greatly suffer from the fall in oil prices. Others say the contrary, that its economy is strong enough to turn the corner.

“Both are right. But one thing saddens me. When I was finance minister the first time, the volatility of oil prices, and therefore state resources, cost at least three points of growth in the country.

“We then established a stabilisation mechanism and opened an account for the oil surplus, which posted up to $22 billion. In 2008, when prices fell from 148 to $ 38 a barrel, no one has heard of Nigeria because the country was able to tap into this fund. And that, I am very proud [of].

“When I returned to the department in 2011, there remained only $4 billion on this account while the price of oil was very high! I tried again to put money aside. The president agreed, but the governors did not accept.

“I suffered a lot of attacks from them and now that the country would really need this account, these same people accuse me of not having saved! If Nigeria had been more careful, we would not be here today. It hurts me. We have the mechanism, we had the experience, but we were prevented to act.”

In response to public outcry against the excruciating pain faced by Nigerians, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is to declare a one-day nationwide strike against the insistence by the federal government to go on with the electricity tariff hike, ongoing fuel scarcity and current economic hardship Nigerians are facing under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.



Declaring open the Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting of the NLC, the President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, accused the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government of failing in several fronts in its promises to the people.

The union said it will also protest against anti-labour laws about to be enacted by the Kaduna State governor, Ahmed El Rufai.

Also, human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, said while speaking at the event that the teeming population of Nigerians “didn’t vote change for suffering.

“We didn’t vote change for agony; we didn’t vote change for tyranny. We fully endorse NLC resolutions for strike,” Falana said.

He lambasted the double-speak of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Dr Ibe Kachikwu, saying that, “today he says fuel scarcity will end in May, tomorrow, he says he’s not a magician.  Somebody is supervising himself because there’s no NNPC board.”

Speaking on the flagrant abuse of court order on the charge to government to return back to old electricity tariff,  Wabba explained that government cannot arbitrarily disobey such orders without opposition from labour.

“The point must be made that obedience to the rule of law by all citizens but more particularly those who publicly take the oath of office to protect and preserve the Constitution is desideratum to good governance and respect for the rule of law. In a constitutional democratic society like ours, this is meant to be a norm

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has said for a greater part of the last 16 years, the government in power failed to prepare for a rainy day, a reason the country is currently in crisis.
Receiving the president of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Dr Bernard O. Aliyu, at the State House, Abuja, on Monday, Buhari said “in the First Republic, more enduring infrastructure was built with meagre resources. But in the past 16 years, we made a lot of money without planning for the rainy day. 
“We showed a lot of indiscipline in managing our economy and that is why we are where we are today. But this time round, we’ll do our best.”
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was at the helm of affair of the country throughout the period being referred to by President Buhari.
Speaking further, he said “Nigeria needs to work on its potentials, so that we don’t remain permanently at the level of potentials. 
“If Ethiopia is sustained largely by its airline industry, we have greater potentials here. We must move out, engage with the rest of the world, as we need to re-establish the integrity of this country. We need to rebuild this country again.”
Buhari recounted that for the greater part of the last 16 years, oil sold above $100 per barrel, but expressed regret that the nation did not have much to show for it.
Reacting, PDP rejected Buhari’s assertion that the party failed to save for a raining day, saying that it was the All Progressives Congress (APC) elements that frustrated effort of the past government to save. 
According to the national publicity secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh, APC governors led opposition to the National Economic Council (NEC) to save money during the last dispensation. 
Noting the role played by APC governors in opposing the National Sovereign Wealth Fund, Metuh said the PDP was proud of its achievement in government. 
“We tried as much as possible to save money within the context of the law, because PDP was not the only party involved,” he said, adding that the attempt was challenged by APC elements in the NEC. 
He pointed out that the former ruling party cleared billions of dollars of international debts owed by the country, adding that unlike the present administration, there was no consensus by political parties to give the PDP government the opportunity to carry out its mandate. 
Speaking during the meeting with President Buhari, Dr Aliyu, the Nigerian-born ICAO president, commended President Buhari for his strides on anti-corruption and urged Nigeria to pay more attention to development of civil aviation.
“Civil aviation is a catalyst for economic development. The level of aviation development in any country mirrors the economic development of that country,” Dr Aliyu said.
The ICAO president pledged to support the development of the aviation industry in Nigeria, urging the country to improve on training and capacity development, aviation security, aerodromes and air navigation, runways, control towers, terminal buildings, among others

Following the increasing rate of kidnapping and other forms crime in Kaduna State, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase has directed the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge Zone 7 AIG Ballah Nasarawa to relocate to Kaduna State.
While in Kaduna, AIG Nasarawa is expected to effectively supervise the security situation in the State.
The IGP also charged the AIG to devise means of stopping the incessant kidnapping as well as other forms of crimes, especially in Jere, Kagarko Local Government Area of the State.
The Police Chief in a statement in Abuja on Monday by the Force Spokesperson, Olabisi Kolawole also urged the AIG to develop new intelligence gathering and crime-fighting techniques and methodologies to suit the local challenges.
Arase also ordered that Police officers who have served in Kaduna State Command for a period of six years and above be transferred out of the Command with corresponding replacement.
In a related development, the IGP equally directed Commissioners of Police in Kogi State Command, CP Ojukwu and FCT, CP Wilson Inalegwu to improve on the surveillance network and high police visibility in the states.
The IGP asked the CPs to check the incessant criminal activities in Abuja-Lokoja-Okene and Kabba – Owo axis.
The IGP however assured the citizenry of the commitment of the Force to their safety, noting that the Police in collaboration with other security agencies will continually ensure strategic responses towards eliminating any threat to internal security of the nation.
