Yara-ill has accepted the US Africa Command.

Another tactically decision that will come back to hunt Nigeria. But Yara-ill is doing this for his own survival. Now US will back him.

The Federal Government may have reconsidered its stand on the United States Africa Command, known as Africom, as it has accepted most of the proposals in the policy.
He noted that Nigeria rejected a situation in the past when the US military made incursions into parts of Africa without seeking the consent of African countries.

He described the situation as Africom 1, adding that the practice of unwarranted incursions by US military formations was a thing of the past.

On Nigeria‘s new position, Maduekwe said the proposal was examined by Nigeria and it was found suitable for her survival as a nation.

He said it was not wise for Nigeria to maintain a ”cold war” posture by exhibiting the old communist anti-west stance.

He said the Africom proposal would be beneficial to both Nigeria and the US interests in handling the issue of terrorism and the building of the capacities of African soldiers.

He said, ”The Africom 2 is one that will continue to exist for US cooperation with African militaries in the area of training, logistics and equipment support. It is the Africom that will see our officers going to the US War College and that had existed for many decades, but now if they have been admitting five of them, they can now admit 20 of them because there is a new understanding.

”This Africom 2 is that which will avail us satellite governance to enable us enhance our own capacity for nipping terrorist attacks. Terrorist attacks know no boundary and if there is terrorist attack in Nigeria it can literally cripple our economy because we still have a fragile economy.

”So, if there is a level of infrastructure available somewhere, it does not have to be in America, it could be any other country. But now the Americans have offered what they have been offering us but they have said ‘let us make it more administratively tidy‘ rather than getting this support from Europe.”

On Nigeria‘s bid for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council, Maduekwe said the country was better positioned to get it.

This is good news.  At least the US will monitor the "Al-Qaeda" network in Nigeria there so that some Nigerians will have some peace and quiet for a change.

At least "psychologically"! cool

I will feel very good to visit Nigeria and know that the US has a military base in Nigeria to get the real news on Nigeria on ground than all the "stories" we keep seeing in the useless Nigerian News papers.

Nigerian girls will have a variety of men to choose from and several means of "accelerating" their immigration status by being impregnated by some of those handsome, well toned US soldiers.

I almost regret I left Nigeria.  Hmmmmmm! Well, all hope is not lost for some girls in Nigeria now.

Thank God for answering our prayers.

what we dont need are 'road-side-bombs' in Lagos/Abuja/Aba/Kano etc.

Mexico gains a lot in trade from the USA each year. Each year, billions in goods made in mexico are imported into the USA. Another benefit mexico gainsn from the USA is the billions of dollars pumped into the mexican economy by investors from the USA as well as mexicans who send money back to family and friends in Mexico. As a whole, mexico gains quite a lot from it's being a neighbour to the USA.

When it comes to what Nigeria will gain from it's relationship with AFRICOM, we have discussed this issue extensively on other threads. At that time the president was said to have accepted the offer when he was in washington in a meeting with AFRICOM and then denied his accepting the deal when he arrived in the country (not sure which is fact or fiction), however, what we should ask is what has changed. From the above article, the politician claims that the deal would mean more involvement of African and Nigerian millitary but that was already part of the plan since the beginning. Infact, I believe the deal stated that US millitary forces would play a support role and will be available to provide help to the local government when called on. If that has already been part of the package from the begining, what changed??

It appears this has more harm than benefits to Nigeria.
It is likely to make Nigerians develop feelings of inferiority towards these people who will have more firepower and more economic power(financially) than our own military. What will then happen is that we will have our soldiers and nationals further disillusioned by their inability to match what these oppressors will bring to bear upon the economy.

It's also another opportunity for America to extend it brand further in Nigeria (especially knowing that Nigerians love anything foreign more than they love their own)

I have no idea how you came up with the reasons you give above. Basically, from your post, one can easily sum it up by stating that it means Nigerians are idiots and so AFRICOM should not be encouraged. The first reason you give I believe is more an insult to Nigerians than it is a reason for why this may cause harm. I say that cause I do not understand how anyone can come up with that for a reason why AFRICOM should be in Nigeria. As for the second, Nigeria is already flooded with brands from America and the rest of the western world. Over 95% of goods we currently consume is part from the western world and mostly from the asian world. To preclude that AFRICOM coming to Nigerian now will bring extension of American brands is, in my opinion, utterly ridiculous.

It is not an insult for people to feel inferior to others who seem more successful financially. It's a human sociological reaction. Nigerians will become 2nd class to Americans in Nigeria if American soldiers should come and make their base in Nigeria. We have managed so far to keep our country intact without American presence.

Besides, American presence is a catalyst for trouble in most parts of the world; why are we inviting that trouble?

On the second point, Nigeria is already littered with foreign goods: no doubt about that. Do we want to continue to perpetuate that or to try and re-orientate Nigerians to patronise Nigerian?

This is assuming that most parts of the world have more trouble than we already have within our borders and I say that is so not the case. We happen to be laden with some of the most ridiculous issues, compared to the rest of the developing world considering what we have and all. AFRICOM has been in Uganda for years now and you barely here a pip out of that place except when it comes to the always present internal issues of poor government and militant issues, which are in no way related to AFRICOM.

The Chinese and Indians are already in the country on commercial assigments. They not only import most of the goods we consume in that country now, which for the most part remains of low quality compared to what we have here in America but they have planted hundreds of stations out there and handle many of our own governments work and contracts. Bringing in AFRICOM may force some sort of improvement on the part of the quality of labour and goods sold in that country and at the end of the day, open some sort of door for Nigerian businesses to better compete, instead of sticking to the semi-monopolistic situation we have today(with china leading the pack).
The move to patronize goods from other countries is inevitable consequence of globalization and not AFRICOM's fault. I say we use it to our own advantage before things get out of hand.

We dont have the kind of violence triggered by Americans in most other places. If we should laden ourselves with such, we dont have the resources or the mentality to deal with it. Nigeria is not Uganda and does not have the same socialogical and cultural make up as Uganda. The presence of American soldiers living in Nigeria can only further destroy the Nation's cultural and social fabric.

The fact that the chinese and Indians are already in does not mean that Nigeria should become a gbogbo-ero country where anything goes. As it is, we are struggling with the effect of westernised Nigerians and their influence as a result of the hard cirrency they bring on their short trips, on the moral fabric of the country. We will never be able to sustain the onslaught that will result when we allow American soldiers to get into our society with their social and cultural beliefs that are so alien to the Nigerian culture.

You can not play the "WE ARE UNIQUE" card when trying to find out what is right or wrong for Nigeria. I understand that we are a prideful people but at the end of the day, our pride/"UNIQUENESS" has only gotten us to where we are today and I believe we ought to drop that card and understand that just as Kenya, Ghana etc have been able to drop that act and apply the same logic they have seen applied over and over in the developed world, it may be our only chance. We are not unique in anyway as we are nothing but human beings at the end of the day. When stripped of all the tribal and belief issues we have, we are nothing but human beings.

I disagree with your logic on this one. Again, we live in a global world. Youc an not now decide to rollback the hands of time as we took the leap back in the 80's to welcome the rest of the world in. To survive in this world, we have to, not only welcome the world but learn to carve out a niche for ourselves in the new world. Something we continue, with our policies and myopic ways, to fail at. Again, trying to put the problem on the incoming AFRICOM soldiers is not the way to go. Infact, look to Uganda and Senegal to see what is more likely to happen if we continue to blame everyone else but ourselves for the situation in the country.

The first thing that came to mind about this whole AFRICOM base thing was terrorism. I mean, look at what happens in Kano all the time, someone drew cartoon in denmark and there is riot in Kano, someone said something in europe and there is riot, someone has diarrhea in mexico and their is riot, someone peed in South Africa and the pee had two streams and there is riot. Considering that fact won't having an american base give people the feeling of, if they can target the base then they can get back at america in some way?

@Kobojunkie, i did not say we should pass up a beneficial opportunity, i am just considering if it could do more harm than good? And above all it is a shame though, it just goes to show how screwed up things really are. It is a shame that setting up a US base would seem like the only viable option to maintain some security when Nigeria actually could if it had the will and not just the corrupt belly. Case in point the police equipment fund. So in general, do you think it would be more beneficial considering a possible threat it might pose? Imagine Nigeria becoming a target, is it really implausible?

Re: Nigeria Accepted US Army Barrack In Nigeria. by Kobojunkie: 8:02pm On May 29, 2008
My take on the situation in that country is that we can no longer afford to waste time in trying to fix problems we have continued to show that we are not capable of solving, at this time. I believe now more than ever, we need to start outsourcing as much as we can AFFORD to, in order to catch up with the rest of the world and then, we can sit and start making moves to cut back where we need to, to the benefit of our people. I am not an economist but I believe that africa's break time is over and continuing on the path( filled with hiccups and corruption) we are on right now is only going to push us further into the desert, than we can afford to go. We have a short gap left for us to push ourselves out of this hole and at least carve out a place for ourselves in the world we live in today.

Nigeria becoming a target is plausible. The US has been in Japan for so long and they do not have any such complaints. AFRICOM is set to move from Germany (may have completed the move) and there was no problem with such there. Tanzania was a target a while back and it had little or no US presence there. Uganda, which is right next to tanzania however, has had no attacks within it's shores cause of AFRICOM's presence.

I believe we should right now focus more on the benefits than the "potential" woes. We do not have AFRICOM yet but as you posted earlier, we already have terrorists of our own up north , who practically react violently to every thing that moves on the globe, and we have had them for over a decade now. Coupled with the fact that we are not that many years away from being controlled by the mob up north, I say we go for this and focus more on the need of the majority and then deal with these as we get things more under control.

Wow. Kobojunkie,

Have you so bought into another man's view of what the standard of civilization should be that you are ready to swallow and imbibe their own ideals as your own? Isn't the very foundation of what freedom is supposed to be the ability of an individual to retain some authenticity and individuality? Are you really that daft that you believe this western propanganda of jando the great saviour that you can't tell when they are there purely for their own enrichment? This is a blatant encroachment of a stupidly ruled African country by a succubus western country for OIL! There are adverts all the time on Jando tv of how they have secured oil supply for 60 years to come. Can you see the pattern? They are staking their claim just as China is too! ARE You REALLY THAT BLIND or STUPID? Do you not play chess or checkers? Can you not see the bigger game of civilizations happening? WTH?!! Just because people don't go around riding chariots with large armies and brandishing swords, bows and arrows doesn't mean the bigger nations aren't suppressing or exploiting the weaker ones. The chariots have been traded for well orchestrated propaganda and politics, the archaic weapons for nuclear power and biological weapons. Don't tell me u are that stupid because I know as a Nigerian you went to primary school at least. Signing treaties without looking at the bigger context or future results of said treaty is NOT an option not in this rapidly global climate. We CANNOT AFFORD to be stupid!!!
