In all honesty, I can't imagine what one can be able to save out of N5,000 as you have to put into consideration the cost of transporting yourself to your work place, that's if your office is not the next block to your home, feeding oneself, if you don't stay with close familiy members that would rather feed you in order that you can save and other expenses that will surely come up.
If you have to take a job that offers "peanuts", then I think it should be a job that you'll have gained some sort of experience at the end of your stay there, even if it's not related to your field of study. You also should be able to save something at the end of the month and the job need not get in your way of searching for or attending interviews that may or will land you your "dream job".
But if you feel comfortable with it, that is after you must have considered all of the above and much more, then you should take it, as it's better than staying idle at home. Who knows, as Wale said it can open a BIG job for you.

I do wish you all the best.

@ Iwalewa

shocked Are you serious or are you kidding? I wouldn't advise that you take the job, it isn't worth it except you've got ntn at all and there is no hope. It is really sad because I pay my driver much more than that and I know for sure that he isn't a graduate.

Guy,
I must be frank with you.Even if you do not have anything at all,do not accept it.once you accept it,you'll find out that you hardly have time to look elsewhere for opport.Infact you may begin to feel you will be comfortable with a little more when you are not able to find another ontime. One thing i always tell myself is that|"if i dont stand by something,i'll fall for anything".My broda, set a Standard for yourself and stand by it or you'll fall.Be strong.
Cheers, Tainzo

Guy abi u be babe, Bust that thing, even if u have graduated with a pass, that does not mean u should collect 5ton for anything. See 8500 during national service is the least and last anyboby should even think of collecting.

I even think is high time we the nigerian graduates should form a formidable force to fight all these our shylock employers of labour.

As for me oh, instead of my to collect 5ton/month even if is 4hrs/day, i no follow.

If you worked for 22 days a month, that'll be approximately $1.7 a day.

You've just been pimped ( sorry, pauperised) Naija style.
Re: Is It Advisable For A Fresh Graduate To Take A Job Of 5000 Naira Per Month? by Olulayomi(f): 3:57pm On Nov 24, 2006
My dear, the money is damned too small.   In case, you have to feed , cloth and transport yourself to the place, unless otherwise or else, you'll  be taking salary advance every blessed day before the end of the month and if you continue like that, you will discover that, on payday, what you'll get will be zero amount.  If it a Marketing job, with good commission attached, and you can cope , then give it a try, at least from there, "you fit waka jam goodluck and good job" but if not and the office is not next room "forget it".

Remember, on taking the job, people will believe, you're now working and something must 'drop' from you, if you keep on complaining, they will tell you "half bread is better than none" .  You can still  pray, scout and apply for jobs, dont worry , God will surely  make a way and provide.

But come to think of it, how can a company offered N5000 to a fresh graduates? In this country, where N5000 can just melt away within a second, Na wah for the future of youth in this country o.
Re: Is It Advisable For A Fresh Graduate To Take A Job Of 5000 Naira Per Month? by Seun(m): 4:08pm On Nov 24, 2006
The only thing worse than 5,000 naira a month is 0 naira a month.
Any job you take today will make your resume more impressive to future employers.
If the job provides career development opportunities for you, take it. You can drop it later, anytime.
Re: Is It Advisable For A Fresh Graduate To Take A Job Of 5000 Naira Per Month? by twinstaiye(m): 4:12pm On Nov 24, 2006
Iwalewa, better take it. Learn from my own story. I was like you in the past, looking for a lucrative job, at least some job that can really pay well. One day, one of my mentor whom I was doing my NDE (back then) National Directorate of Employement, it is a scheme where you are to learn a trade. He then called me one day and told me, to start from somewhere and that I should bother less about looking for a big pay job. I took to the advice, and I first started a job with, wait for it, NURTW, then from there to a Tobacco company, and then to a Bank and now to my present employer which is the biggest and juicest of them all. Iwalewa, learn from my experience and start from somewhere, perhaps that job of 5,000 per month is somewhere.

Dear friend, i want to let you know that it is not ideal to receive such tiny pay. If you do, it means you don't know your worth. For me I better stay empty. Be wise cos such amount is for school cert to manage. grin

Iwalewa,

I will like to support what twinstaiye, seun and akonte have said. TAKE IT if there is a purpose behind it!

What is the talk about dignity of a graduate? Spare me abeg!

I graduated from the University in 2002 and took up a job of 3, 500 as a cybercafe attendant cool why? There was a purpose behind it and that purpose has brought me to where I am today.

I knew nothing about the Internet then and I was sure my path in life will have something to do with the Internet. I left that job as a Web Designer and got an idea about running an online business from there. Most of my colleagues always tell me then that I am being paid for coming to a Computer School when it should be the other way round grin grin grin

I enjoyed every bit of it and I left when I found out that I have enough knowledge and was not resting enuff. afterwards I took up a job as a legal secretary with a old SAN and was collecting #5, 000 in 2003. It was another learning galore over there. I left there in October 2003 and ever since I have NEVER had a job!

I believe there is always a price to pay for personal freedom to be achieved. Those of you telling this guy/dame not to take the job don't know what sacrifice is and I have learnt that if I am going to become a BETTER person in the future I have to take some risks and pay a lot of sacrifices!

Iwalewa and so many in your shoes, I hope this helps. kiss kiss kiss

Naijas and their false sense of pride, sha. "Despise not the days of small beginnings". In a country where there are hardly enoff jobs to go around, na dia some dey advice pesin to turn down a job -- like say na them go feed you or give you pocket money when you dey broke, or ask you to come chill in their house when you're dying of boredom and joblessness. Well, you can keep hoping sha, that you'll be that ONE lucky guy out of a 100,000 of your peers/mates who want to work for Shell and those Banks that offer jumbo pays, OR you can swallow your 'pride', gird your loins, and get your foot in the door with that seemingly meager pay. Like other wise minds have already said, it may just be your DOOR to better opportunities/offers. This is naija we're talking about for pete's sake! Where some sit at home for donkey years with no jobs, still depending on mommy and daddy; where's the 'pride' in that? Get real, people! That's the major reason why a lot of people end up as failures in life -- the unwillingness to make the sacrifices which success entails/requires/demands! Anyhow, good luck.  smiley

As tempting as it is to jimp into either camp, I think what you need right now is to really take a decision that shows that you are willing to take responsibility for your life. I know that 5k is very small but as someone said, weigh your options. I have friends who have nevr experienced what it means to ever earn that low and if they were on this forum, they'd prolly say it is impossible. Since I started out that low and now own my own business, I have a fairly different perspective. The only category of people you should take serious are people who have had to make the choices you are faced with given the kinds of background you have.

The worst thing that can happen to you is to be unemployed over a period of time that it makes unemployable. is this job very close to where you live? Are there other perks factored in somewhere? Does it offer good experience in the line of your careergoals in life? Do you get ant form of support at all from home? what other things can you occupy yourself with within the time you will get another job? Does it prevent you from getting some other job or creating other oppurtunites?

These are some of the questions you must sincerely ask.Its your life bro! anyone can say what they like!
