I dont live in lagos but i know alayes harass people.i think nigeria as a whole has that indigene vs settlers silent war.it has nothing to do with tribe or religion.igbos are most affected because of their property acquisition culture.

@poster,
Ethnicity is a Nigerian thing,in every facet of our lives, even a close friend exhibits it,thats y we've problems today, where it doesn't protect the interest of a particular ethnic group, they shout on top of their voices,if a southern was a yar'dua, they north would ve start skirmish n will be shouting on top of their voices, there is a boko haram at d north n there's no jtf, even in appointments, its done on merit, its done on ethnic terms n that's y Nigeria is going down until we change then we'll continue to have problems.I tell you that's the major problem we've in the country.

I am a Yoruba man and a Muslim and I don't have any problem relating to people of other tribes and religions. I try as much as possible to be detribalized. I have defended Ibo and Hausa/Fulani on NL here in the past. I was labelled 'Fulani behind-licking guy' by somebody on NL. Of course, as a proud Yoruba man, I have genuinely defended my tribe from what undue bashing too.

I am a practising Muslim, and the moderator of the Muslims section on NL. I am even more active in Politics section, and sometime Sports, where I relate and agree with other non-Muslim political contributors on various issues. Ditto for other sections. Many people here did not even know my religious affiliation.

Ethnic and religious bigotry, I believe, cuts across all tribes and religions in Nigeria. I lost an election in the University because of my religious affiliation. I have met people that dislike me for no other reason than my religious affiliation. And in the same vein, I have seen people of different faiths and tribes that passionately defend me in matters some people would have allowed religious and tribal sentiments to override their objectivity. On NL here for example, popular Funmi Deepzone(I prefer to call her by real name cos she changes ID from time to time) is one of my passionate defenders, especially on that 'Kwara goat' thread that somewhere degenerated to Jarus/Ife-Eco-06 bashing some two years ago. And this is someone that dislikes my religion passionately. She doesn't let that becloud her sense of reasoning. Conversely, the only reason why some people dislike me on NL here is because I am a Muslim, so anything I say elsewhere, they look at it from religious prism and start attacking me.

In real life, I think it is not this bad, especially in Lagos. Lagos is very cosmopolitan and people hardly care about your religion and tribe. I work in an office that has many Hausa and Ibo and we all relate perfectly.

I'm not saying I'm totally immuned from the almost natural inclination to have religious and tribal sentiment reflect in one's action, but I try to nip in the bud before acting on the prompting. I will never deny a more quailified Christian or atheist or Hausa or Ibo a job or an opportunity because I share a different view from him/her. That's a no-no.

This is why ThisDay columnist Simon Kolawole remains my favourite analyst. Through his 'Simon Kolawole live' column on ThisDay on Sunday, he has been preaching one Nigeria, despite being a born-again Christian and an Ekiti Yoruba man.

Our structures and systems are inherently bigotted.

Federal character and the introduction of sharia have caused inequality.
It is no use ignoring these unfair policies and accusing those who are on the receiving end of this injustice of being unpatriotic.

The virtue of being detribalised in this sea of anomy is like medicine after death. Let us address the grievances.

Thanks all for your contributions.

@Kobojunkie

You come off as being cocky and too sure of yourself. I have been like that before so I can recognize someone like that. You don't have to lace your replies with terse remarks and pseudo-insults. You don't need to bring others down to look better. As for the issues you raised, this is my submission:

I did not say the issues exist up North only. There are religion/ethnicity motivated instances of violence in many parts of the country, but the North is most notorious for violence based on radical Islam/dislike for Southerners/Christians. This is my observation. If you have a different observation, you can point it out.

I stand by my statement that majority of our politicians are ethnic/religious bigots. True, they get support from bigoted and non-bigoted people. But then, how much of this support can be investigated as genuine. In Nigeria where bags of rice and kegs of oil determine who gets the most vote, are we sure that their supporters really believe in the bigotry they preach?

What really got men thinking about this issue was an essay I had to write on the difference diversity has made in my life. I found myself confused and going back-and-forth between my experience in America and Nigeria, wondering whether diversity existed(it did i both cases) and whether or not it made a difference(I am yet to answer this question). I definitely can identify with the examples you gave about your experiences in Lagos and America. I have had similar experiences but interpreted it differently. For example, when the yoruba market woman says, " All this dimwitted Hausas and Igbo are the cause of all these problems in this market. Let them go back to their place." I see her frustration, but I do not believe she sees the Hausas and Igbos as lesser creatures than her ala racism in America. Just the same way my Mum complaining about the loudspeaker from the mosque facing her room window does not mean she hates Muslims or think less/evil of them. But then, I have seen my dad discuss politics and refer to "awon Hausa" and "awon omo Igbo yen" in ways that are cringe-worthy. If a bigot is according to Wikipedia, "a prejudiced person who is intolerant of any opinions differing from their own or intolerant of people of different ethnicity, race, or class," then I will not categorize the people I mentioned above as bigots. Will you? In this sense, what this thread is really asking is that is the average Nigerian intolerant of people of different ethnicity/religion.

I think people that are actually "intolerant of people of different ethnicity/religion" are the minority. Tensions may exist and people may act in certain ways out of anger, irritation and frustration, but the real bigotry, in terms of hate and intolerance, is not very common, I believe. In this sense, my submission is closest to the one made by Beaf. Even if we use your own definition of bigot, I don't think the average Nigerian can be described like that. If you have a reason to think otherwise, your opinion is welcome.

@SapeleGuy

I don't understand what you said.

tribalism in Nigeria is more covert than open.  It rears its ugly head when things such as political posts are at stake.  What's even more ignored is intra-ethnic rivalries.  Ijebu vs Egba etc.
Re: Is The Average Nigerian An Ethnic And Religious Bigot? by sjeezy8: 12:20am On Jan 10, 2010
Tribalism isnt bad because there are "ifes vs ijesha" but they still get alongas yorubas, maybe "igbo vs yoruba" but they still live in Lagos and attend church together, without daily weekly or monthly battles based on tribes.

The worse is religion which is caused by northern muslims, I must say.
Yorubas vs Hausas-fulani
Igbos vs Hausas-fulani
Tiv vs Hausas-fulani

all based on religion provoked by Hausas-fulani.

It happens in the great United States, so why should it be that different in Nigeria? Who will you trust with your money first your brother or a stranger? So are you a brotherist? grin Consequently, is any country united if one trusts their brothers over others?

Ethnicity is not a big deal in LA(Cali) they regularly have black vs brown(latino). Religion is the one that is the most.
Because if igbo man kills yoruba man over a babe, Both side ones wont go after eachother but if hausa man kills igbo man over islam both sides will go crazy.

Its about time Nigerian govt makes an effort to not put religion in everything.

which part
Re: Is The Average Nigerian An Ethnic And Religious Bigot? by SEFAGO(m): 12:52am On Jan 10, 2010
The part about religion- Nigeria is like any African country with ethnic problems, most "pogroms" do not arise as a result of religion- but envy and distrust of another ethnic group as well as ignorance. Yes, Hausa Muslims do kill Christians in the name of religion. But I would love to see if these Hausa Muslims kill their fellow Hausa Christians (Yes there are Hausa Christians). Any insult on Islam is usually used by the Hausa to take their anger on other ethnic Christians, an anger that was caused by previously existing tensions. The insult to islam, is the last straw to spark preexisting distrust for Christian Igbos or Yoruba/ethnic minorities.

No, religion is not the cause, but the excuse.

I don't understand what you said.

Federal Character, monopolisation of power, misappropriation of  mineral and financial resources have lead to resentment, which has become bigotry and ethnic intolerance.

The traits you highlighted (ethnic and religious bigotry) are mere symptoms and reactions to something more insidious. Religion and ethnicity is what the politicians use to control the people and make them do their bidding.

Who we think we are, dictates how we function as a society. I think our society is far too complex / diverse for 'catcha all' phrases like the average nigerian to be effective.

What or who is an average nigerian? What does it mean to be a nigerian? What is the nigerian dream or value system?
So many people have died and continue to die defending our votes. Your bag of rice and oil scenario is a tad simplistic.

If the same had come out of a South African, would you still have interpreted it the same way? Or is it OK for a Yoruba market woman to say such in a place like Lagos but just not ok for an Ibo to say the same or something? I mean I am trying to understand why you would dismiss that sort of remark when we know that such have caused some serious fights in the past.

You tell me. Are you saying even though your examples point to people who seem to harbor intolerant views of others on mostly ethnic and probably religious lines, you are  unwilling to consider they are probably bigots since the definition seems to fit anyway?

beejaei:

It is not MY OWN DEFINITION, that is the dictionary definition of the word according to Merriam and Webster. So if you are here to REDEFINE the word, know that I am not in that with you.

Now, last I checked, bigots are people who out of frustration or tension would act along ethnic or religious lines. I am not sure what exactly you wanted to hear when you started the thread cause I sort of sense you are looking to change the meaning so you can accept or allow some things.  Am I wrong?

If a caucasian american, or even a white policeman, where to, out of the tension, frustration and irritation call you the N word and insult your people would you be willing to excuse that in much the same way you are willing to excuse the above?

Notice: I have NOT said anywhere in my post that I believe the average Nigeria is or is not bigoted. I am simply providing you with something different from what you have provided so far, to get you to see where you may possibly be wrong about what you think is the case.

People get away with racist remarks everyday. They just make those remarks in front of their friends/people who look like them. Except if the market woman is a celebrity and says it right in front of TV or in front of an ibo and hausa she would not be required to do nada if she was in America. Everyone has prejudices duh. I can pull out 5 different racist remarks, that have gone unpunished usually ending in community meetings with Al Sharpton and appearing on TV to say sorry. Its hard to reply and ignore your silliness and arrogance. U are one hell of a idiot. But I will try.

Name 10 of the many politicians that you know FOR A FACT to be an ethnic bigot, and please provide support for the accusation you make.

Then, tell me why those who SUPPORT them do so, with some support and I am not speaking of the usual sharing of phonecards and what nots.

I don't need to name. 99% of them fit under that appellation. So if you randomly pick a Nigerian politician, you are almost certain that he/she is bigoted to an extent. Except for the educated people(by educated, I mean those that have been able to make their education count socially and financially), majority of Nigerians do not vote on any principle. This is partly because majority of Nigerian politicians have no principles to begin with. I mean principles in the sense of a well-articulated, fairly-constant and defensible standpoint on the issues that affect the populace. It is also partly due to a lack of faith in the electoral process. These Nigerians that do not vote on principle will either vote for their wallet or for their ethnicity or for some other reason that they feel directly benefits them. It is because of situations like these that bigoted politicians get any votes. Take an hypothetical John for example. Mr Bush is running for governor in John's state. John graduated from the university but hasn't had a job 5 years since leaving school. So Mr Bush, whose intention for wanting to get elected is not to serve the people, through his campaigners, asks for John's vote. He knows John can rarely afford to feed his family. And even though John has heard rumors about Mr Bush's corrupt tendencies, he decides to ignore them because such rumors exist about the other candidates too. Besides, Mr Bush is willing to reward him financially, through his agents, for his vote. Part of Mr Bush's campaign rhetoric to John includes stuff about how the other candidate should not get elected because he is from so-and-so place and how if Mr Bush get elected, he will be the one to bring the dividends of democracy to the people of John's locale, of which Mr Bush is a part of. So through a mixture of financial inducements and ethnic jingoism, Mr Bush gets John's vote. John will probably never check the party manifesto of Mr Bush because so many politicians have never delivered on their promises in the past. Basically John knows that politcs in Nigeria is a gamble-if you are lucky, you get a Fashola, if not, you get a Alao-Akala. So John will rather go with the man from his place-that seems to him a better risk for himself and is family in the gamble that is Nigerian politics-especially with the financial inducements. This not necessarily make John and ethnic bigot, but Mr Bush is more likely to be an ethnic bigot than John, based on the reality of Nigerian politics. It has happened with the Egba/Yewa in Ogun, the Aniocha South and Aniocha NOrth in Anambra etc. (NOt sure of the local government names in Anambra).
Wait a second! . . . . If the same market woman had made the same racist remark in a place like America, would have been front news, and the woman would have been lynched or even forced in some way to apologize and maybe made a pariah.

Perhaps I am wrong to dismiss the woman's comments. I probably do not how it feels to be at the receiving end of the remark i.e Igbo, Hausa

You tell me. Are you saying even though your examples point to people who seem to harbor intolerant views of others on mostly ethnic and probably religious lines, you are unwilling to consider they are probably bigots since the definition seems to fit anyway?

They do not harbor intolerant views. Where there is a mosque, there could easily have been a church and the response will be the same. There remarks were definitely not because they "intolerant of any opinions differing from their own or intolerant of people of different ethnicity, race, or class." So, you tell me.

You are an immature idiot for not recognizing that "your own definition" is a Nigerian way of speaking. As for your question, you are wrong. I did not start this thread to change the definition of the word so I can live with myself. I started it because I wanted people with "a little insight and perspective on serious issues" to give their opinions, based on their experiences, so that we could have a discussion and come as close as possible to answering the question posed by the thread. Obviously, a dimwitted slowpoke like you does not fit in that group of participants I expected. And your not stating your opinion but going round in circles and delivering pseudo-insults just confirms you are a sorry excuse for a human being. May I never come across modaphockers like you in my life again. I probably will not see the white officer the same way I will see someone from another tribe in Nigeria, but then I have kinda acclimatized to the culture of constant racial tensions in America and I may thus, by virtue of my programming by my new surroundings, react negatively. If say, I met the said white man at the airport in Lagos before I traveled, I will probably ignore him and not take any offence-something I may or may not do in America. Let's just say it will be on my mind longer in America compared to Nigeria.

And dude, or dudess as the case may be, come off your phecking perch. angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry
