The family of Mr. Christopher Obi in Akwuata Utuh, Nnewi South Local Government Area, Anambra State has received quadruplets not minding that Mr. Obi is an unemployed graduate. His wife, Amaka was delivered of the four babies, two boys and two girls through caesarean at Calvary Hospital, Ebenator in the same local government area on April 15, 2010.

Narrating her experience, Amaka said it was her first pregnancy after two years of marriage, adding that she never expected that the babies will be that many.

“I never knew that I had more than one baby in my womb until the day I went for ultra-sound at the 7th month.

The doctor asked if I knew the number of babies in my womb. I said I din’t know and he asked me to lie down and look at a screen. He began to show me the babies at the screen one by one and I became afraid. When it was time for me to deliver almost on the 9th month I went to the hospital and prepared my mind for, an operation.

Also her husband, Christopher, said it came to him as a surprise, adding that he has been overwhelmed by joy and agony. Agony, because he has been unemployed since three years he graduated from the Anambra State University, Uli. The former number 10 jersey footballer who played for Jasper and later Gabros Football Club of Nnewi said to carter for the babies and their mother is a heavy burden to him and is appealing for help.

“I’m appealing to Anambra State government, cap in hand, even the Federal Government, corporate organizations and public spirited individuals to come to my rescue. As you can see the babies and their mother are still in the hospital and I don’t even know how I can raise the money to pay the hospital bill when they are discharged not to talk of feeding them when they are brought home,” Mr. Obi lamented.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Marcel Udeh said that the babies and their mother were hale and hearty except that the fourth one, a boy, which he said had malformations could not survive even though it was taken to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi for incubation.

Dr Udeh said that the woman was delivered of her babies through caesarean due to complications, explaining that it is the safest way to deliver the babies.

Said Dr Udeh: “She had some complications which is not unexpected. It is normal in this kind of multiple pregnancies. Her blood pressure was too high and the babies were a little bit premature.” He said that three of the four babies weighed 1kg each except one that weighed 1.3kg at birth.
