Reporting From Council of States, Jonathan Has Nominated Prof. Jega to Be the New Inec Chairman after the fall of IWU.
I do Believe this is a Good Step as The nominee Was a Key Player in the Justice Uwais Led Committee On Electoral Reforms and also as a Former Chairman of ASUU he Ought to ensure that who Ever Becomes President or Elected into any position would also boost the Educational Sector.
What Do you Think GUys??

Wow, this was the same guy that brought Babangida to him knees in the 80s when he was ASUU chairman, he refused to call of strike despite all threats from IBB. Lets see how, IBB would sneak Aso rock now. There may be hope for Naija afterall.

What if Nigerians vote for IBB? It is not part of INEC chair's job description to choose the winner. He is just there to conduct a sane process and produce the results as is. Except you are not hoping for free and fair elections like anyone else.

@ Topic

I personally have criticised the idea of appointing an INEC chair before Uwais report is decided by Senate but I must say this appointment looks like a round peg in a round hole if Prof Jegga can be dispassionate. As Vice Chancellor, Professor of Political Science and former chairman of ASUU you can only like to think this man is grown up enough to do his best but Nigerians are unpredictable.

Besides I also maintain that a lot have to do with the Nigerian people because if from Politicians to Thugs to the avergae Nigerian don't change their attitude towards elections and Census. A lot will not change.

His achievement was not being ASUU chair itself, it was how he fought for the life of education during his regime.
And we are talking about standing up against a military govt here.

yes oo, am surprised the ethnic warriors have not come out to call this another northernization. . .and like you said, they trust GJ because he is a southerner, but the action of any person from the north is first seen thru tribal lens.

I have been meaning to put this up as a topic with a poll- the man has not done anything, his policies have been basically the same as his team mate, if they are not planning, proposing, or thinking of doing this and that- he is basically pleasing all the ogas at the moment

Re: Attahiru Jega, New Inec Chair. by OAM4J: 12:00am On Jun 09, 2010

Jega, was head of BUK’s Political Science department before he was appointed its VC in 2005, a tenure that is supposed to end in October.
ASUU under him and the then Babangida government negotiated the 1992 welfare agreement for increased salaries and improved funding for the university system.
Incidentally, when he was ASUU’s leader, Iwu was the union’s deputy president.
Jega was also a member of the Justice Uwais-led Electoral Reform Committee.
A calm but resolute negotiator, Jega’s team also recommended the idea that all companies operating in the country should pay a form of education tax. The idea was bought by the Federal Government, eventually leading to the establishment of the Education Tax Fund (ETF) via a Decree in 1993.
As BUK’s helmsman, Jega, now on the other side of the divide, found himself in contention with his colleagues over similar issues over which he and other ASUU executives had confronted the Federal Government, about 18 years earlier. But with the experience he had gathered as a former union leader, Jega skillfully doused the  tension and peace reigned at the university.
Jega has also been linked with fundamental changes that have occurred so far at BUK, although, critics still accused of him of being slow in taking decisions on some major issues.

Nigerians hail Jega’s choice as INEC boss

A former ASUU president, Prof. Assisi Asobie, described Jega’s appointment as a sign of a good thing, saying Jega was a good material.
In a telephone interview last night, Asobie, who succeeded Jega as ASUU President expressed confidence that the Bayero University Kano (BUK) VC could do the work very competently. But two other past Presidents of ASUU, Dr. Oladipo Fasina and Dr. Abdullahi Sule-Kano, would not comment. They preferred the current ASUU president of the union to address the matter.
However, several phone calls into the incumbent ASUU president, Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, did not yield any result as he refused to pick the calls, neither did he return the calls.
Asobie said he was surprised that Jega was eventually named given the many names bandied in the media about those to succeed Iwu.
According to Asobie: " Remember that he was a member of the Uwais Panel on Electoral Reform, so to that extent, I 'm confident he is going to do the job very well. He is also a consensus builder."
However, Fasina who succeeded Asobie as ASUU President said: " Remember that he was a former ASUU President like me, so anything I say now would be interpreted to mean ASUU's position and if my position goes in contrary to ASUU's position it would send wrong signal to the people."
But the NLC lauded Jonathan for appointing Jega just as it tasked him on credible election next year.
In an exclusive interview with The Guardian in Abuja last night, both the President and General-Secretary of NLC, Abdulwahed Omar and John Odah, respectively described       Jega as a man of honour who would do the right thing given the prevailing circumstance.
Omar said: “Prof Jega’s appointment is a welcomed development to us in the labour movement. Going by his antecedent, we are convinced that he will do the right thing. On our part, both labour and our civil society allies will give him every support he needs to perform.”
Odah said that as a member of the Uwais panel on electoral reform, Jega was well positioned to perform well.
Odah asked Jega to live by example and deliver credible elections in 2011, saying: “We believe that as a public officer for so many years, he will remain firm and steadfast in his beliefs. But the expectation is for him to conduct credible elections in 2011. It is a herculean tasks and we and our traditional allies in the civil society shall give him the necessary support for him to succeed.”
On his part, the Chairman of the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG), an umbrella body of civil society groups involved in election matters, Mr. Moshood Erubami, in Abuja yesterday, said: "We are pleased that the President in his magnanimity has chosen a person that is acceptable. His antecedents make us comfortable as former ASUU President, a respectable civil society activist and a human rights practitioner. We only hope that the government will allow him to do his job."
Speaking with The Guardian last night on telephone, an Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) bigwig who did not want to be named said: “This unusual choice is an indication that President Jonathan means well and may not run (the 2011 presidential election race) after all, He may have been fooling critics after all, This is incredible, ”

The Man Jega

The new National Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Mohammed Jega, hails from Jega town in Kebbi State. He was among pioneer lecturers employed at the then newly established Bayero University, Kano (BUK), immediately after graduating from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, with a B.Sc degree in Political Science.

Not long after his assumption of duty as a graduate assistant, Jega went to Northwestern University , Evanston, in the United States, where he bagged a Masters of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. He was also on sabbatical and duty leave to several universities within and outside the country.

He was variously promoted to the ranks of lecturer II, lecturer I, Reader and Professor of Political Science. Jega also served as Head of the Department of Political Science, Dean of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, and Director of the Centre for Democratic Research and Training (CDRT Mambayya House), all in BUK.

He was the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) between 1988 and 1994.

The professor was appointed as vice-chancellor of Bayero University in September 2005. His five-year tenure would be ending next September.

Jega was a Federal Government delegate to the National Political Reform Conference (NPRC) in 2005 and also served in the Electoral Reform Committee, led by Justice Muhammadu Lawal Uwais, set up by the then President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.

Though best known as a labour activist and astute academic, Jega displayed great administrative traits as the vice-chancellor of BUK. Under his watch, the university underwent transformation in various facets, earning the position of Best University in Nigeria according to the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Jega is also reputed to be a strict disciplinarian. He introduced strict rules against indecent dressing on the two campuses of BUK and placed campus politics under critical watch. Jega introduced many courses to the university and erected several structures, including hostels and lecture halls.

His policies endeared him to most student of the institution, who call him with the endearing sobriquet of Baba Jega.

Sources said Prof. Jega, who is the elder brother of Daily Trust editor Mahmud Jega, is a one-time consultant for INEC.

Prof. Jega is the author of the book, Democracy, Good Governance and Development in Nigeria, published by Spectrum Books in 2007

This is a welcome development and hope it will go a long way. All that matters is a free and fair election and beside been a man of his words I think he will do better. We are tired of all these electoral mess, election madness, court today court tommorrow and all sorts of nasty impeachments that has throw the whole electoral system is disarray and lack of direction.

I think Jonathan made a good choice lets us wait and see how far and well he will go. But for me I support is appointment for what he did during ASUU days.

The appointment of Prof Jega, radical activist and a man of unassailable character (@ least up till now) as the new INEC Chair is undoubtedly a good men as regards 2011 polls. As much as i believe that he is the right man for the job, given his track record and credentials, he should be careful not to fall into the same pit as his erstwhile deputy when he was ASUU President, who incidentally is the immediate past Chair of INEC, the much hated, arrogant and castigated Prof Maurice Iwu.
The Symbolism in this appointment shouldn't be lost on all students and followers of political history and trend in Nigeria.
I also hope the Professor of Political Science wouldn't fall into the same pit, as another "radical activist" and former ASUU president, Dr Iyiorchia Ayu, who became anti-people and fought against everything he stood for as ASUU President after his appointment as Minister of education. He was also a former Senate President.
Prof Jega as a former Consultant to INEC knows exactly what needs to be done to sanitize INEC and thereby organize credible elections come 2011. The question is: Is President Jonathan and the ruling elites prepared for change by allowing credible elections to hold next year?

Just like Sam Egwu, who was ASUU president in the East when Jega was national President we all know what he did as a minister of education under Yar Adua, but to some extent the task of INEC chairman should more less political, he should just be an impartial umpire simple.

I dont know much about this man.But from what i have read so far,1.Are you sure that he did not lobby his way before being appointed VC of BUK or was he appointed based on merit?,this is because i know for sure that most of the VC post in this country called Nigeria is through lobbying, which signifies an ingredients of corruption.2.I heard that he has a very good relationship with Prof.Iwu,cant such relationship inflict him with spots of electoral malpractices/corruption?,which is the product of birds of a feather.Anyway, being a prof of political science, one thing is sure:He knows everything about elections,so he can chose to be a professor of election rigging/malpractices or a professor of credible elections,he knows all the tactics.Lets watch and see the direction the wind will blow. Before i forget, can anybody tell me why Mr Olisa Agbakoba is not chosen for this sensitive job?

make pete edochie the inec chairman and i bet u nigeria and nigerians will think otherwise.
in reality, how can someone employed by jonathan work against him with the mentality of nigeria inside him?
can one appoint a judge in a case in which he is a party?
hell no, i don't know much about this jega of a man but i know much and enough about pdp and their appointees.
i have lost faith with this group of bandits(pdp).
why won't jonathan finish what he started along yar adua? why spending that much in uwais committee when u know it is irrelevant?
why is deciet the only way forward for this pdp?

I hope its not this same Daily Trust that is always out with its one sided reporting based on religion and region. cos this might just point the thinking pattern of Prof Jega.
