16 illegal refineries discovered in Abia
on SEPTEMBER 26, 2011 · in NEWS

By George Onah
Port Harcourt- About 16 illegal refineries have been discovered within Imo River Field of Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, Abia State, causing the company to shut down production of 25, 000 barrels of oil per day since August 28, 2011.

The action aims at starving the bunkerers of oil product in order to prevent further environmental pollution. The crude oil theft and unprecedented upsurge in illegal bunkering and refining are said to have severely impacted on rivers in Abia and Rivers States.

Vice President, Health Sector and Corporate Affairs, Mr. Tony Attah in a statement to Vanguard, weekend, said: “The scale of crude oil theft in the area was alarming. Aside from revenue loss to government and other stakeholders, significant portions of the stolen crude are spilled, blighting large swathes of the ecosystem.

“Imo River Field straddles Abia and Rivers States and has five flowstations, a gas compressor station and several kilometres of pipelines among other facilities. Security forces moved in two years ago dislodging the thieves and destroying dozens of barges and canoes.

“But the criminal activity has recently resumed with crude thieves inflicting hacksaw cuts on pipelines to siphon crude into waiting flotilla of barges and canoes some of which can hold as much as 40, 000 barrels of oil.”

Attah explained that the leadership of Ukwa West Local Government, Abia State House of Assembly members and the Department of Petroleum Resources had been engaged to intervene in the scourge of the illegal bunkering and crude theft.

Vanguard gathered that the large volume barges and Cotonu Boats filled with stolen crude oil collected from trunk lines are most times enroute to discharge into ocean going vessels and other high volume crude oil end users.

Scores of rivers in Rivers State, particularly in Ogoniland, have been polluted by oil in recent times, but most of the spills have been traced to pipeline vandalization, illegal bunkering, refining and sometimes system failure.

Ovularia or whatever idiotic name you call yourself here. As big as Nigeria is, the only crimes you report are the few that happens in the east. Does it mean you do not read or listen to news about other regions. Or is it a deliberate attempt to invite Igbo haters for Igbo bashing?.
Anyway, this thread belongs to the crimes section since you do not know have how to start threads there.
Nonsense.

"Cannibalism can explain the relative light skin of igbos.

The widespread practice of cannibalism in vast areas of Imo, Abia and Enugu (and to some extent Ebonyi) is an open secret in modern Nigerian history. As recent as in the contemporary period, cannibalistic activities were reported in those areas particularly in Abia and Imo states.
Historically, in every human settlement where cannibalism was practiced, the darker a human is, the more nutritious he/she was assumed to be. It is this belief that put darker members of the community or neighboring  community to greater danger of being killed and eaten than fairer ones. In fact, the fair ones are considered as taboo to eat as they are considered to be cursed by the gods.

As a result of depletion of the darker people in such communities, the offspring became increasingly lighter and higher proportion of albinism as well birth defects are  recorded. Such defects include severe mental problems, anti-social behaviour like kidnapping, pipeline vandalism and oil bunkering, sight defects and se.xu.al impotency"

Are these refineries working? are they up to safety standards?

If the big refineries that Nigerian government spent (and still spending to maintain) a lot of money to build aren't working, then Nigerian government should try to learn form the operators of these refineries. Adopting small and efficient refineries may not be a bad idea afterall we can't run BIG things.  sad

Oh my goodness! . . . Who let the pet chimpanzee  baboon out of  his its cage, and who has been teaching it how to use the computer? I am pretty impressed at the progress it has made so far. However I still find it disturbing that it still isnt intelligent enough to stick to the subject of discussion. BTW what is so fascinating about embolden the word Abia ? LOL!! You are as hopeless as your attempt at sarcasm.

I'm suprized the illegal refineries are just being 'discovered', they've been there for a long while. At Ugwuati (Osisikankwu's place), Obowo, Owaza, etc. . . The guy's just pay a good amount of money to the soldiers on guard, then they have a field day! Who knows what went wrong. . .?

@ slap 1,

My guy how u dey? E b like say u lay low for sometime now, abi na me just no dey see u ni? U knw say anything u talk abt Abia happenings na authentic. I dey "gbadun" u wella.

@ all,

Imho, I think d govt should develop a design model for mini refineries and make dem available to local and regulate it through DPR just like petrol stations. I don't see d big deal In retaining such monopoly when it can be commercialized and regulated.

@Seunn11 , You left the object of the thread and delved into Igbo-bashing. Cannibalism of a truth was being practised by all African Tribes, including the Yorubas, through their secret societies, that is why the enlightened Yorubas who school abroad in the early 2oth century, when they came back into the country broke away from a certain dominant secret society in Western Nigeria, which unfortunately stills wields a lot of influence among them, to form another secret sect known as REFORMED , Fraternity that abhors cannibalism and other primitive acts that was(is) being performed by the older sect.

@Seunn11, cross check what I have written above and you will know who the true cannibals are. grin grin grin

@Seunn11, I am sure you are one dark looking son-of-a, that must be darker than midnight and so fear so much about being eaten up according to your theorems. Dont worry, your thighs will make very good culinary items for the cannibals cooking pot grin grin grin

Abia is a poor state so i am not surprised, since the fed govt can't give them enough doe gotten from the refined crude let them refine the crude themselves and make the money themselves and save the fed govt the stress in exporting, refining and importing.

There are far more illegal refineries in Bayelsa than any other State in Nigeria and they specialize in production of AGO.Rivers comes 2nd followed by Abia.I still give my full support to these people because they are helping us survive with cheap diesel in Port Harcourt.
