Thanks. I like the direction Nigeria is moving in

Seun, thanks for the information but I think the tuition is rather on the high side.
Re: Covenant University by Seun(m): 10:51am On Jun 14, 2005
Yes, but a 4 year course takes only 4 years, and not 6 like some other universities. Besides, when you've been waiting at home for years all of a sudden 250,000 doesn't seem like so much money anymore! It's a nice, cheap alternative to furthering your studies abroad.

Na wah oh!!! education seems to be a right of the rich elites in Nigeria now. What hope is there for the masses? What hope is there for the nation if the majority cannot afford basic education? Cos in this world, university education is now basic.

Education in Nigeria is obviously for the rich.250,000naira per session totals one million for d 4years. Small amount like Seun said if u consider staying at home. However for those whose parents earns average of 150,000naira per annum, this means that their parents would have to mortage all they have including an eye, an ear, a hand, a leg, and half their heart to pay for tuition. The other half of their bodies will go for books, feeding, etc. The question that comes to mind is that if a church school is charging so much, what would other non-religious organizations charge? Bye bye to university education for poor man pikin.
Re: Covenant University by jogego(m): 1:17pm On Jun 14, 2005
exactly a church university, what happened to charity? what happened to helping the needy? If the English missionaries had placed such a high premium on education, how many of our fore fathers woulda been educated?
Re: Covenant University by Seun(m): 2:02pm On Jun 14, 2005
If the 'rich people' who can pay 250,000 per annum are able to send their children into Covenant University instead of using the money to bribe university decision-makers to admit their children, this will free up space in the federal and state universities for the 'average' people who cannot afford 250,000 per year. The only way to make the prices go down beyond was they are now is to license so many private universities that price competition will be ignited.

Having said that, wouldn't rather pay 200 - 250,000 per annum to be educated than sit at home for an indefinite period of time or spend 6-7 years on a 4 year course in an under-funded, over-crowded university where you are not able to gain any form of practical experience?

My issue is that a church is making money out of a bad situation. I thought a church was supposed to provide for the masses? But this is definitely not for the masses.

And what form of practical experience can be gained in the so-called private institutions? Aside the strike actions, I don't think all these private schools are better than the federal and state schools in any way! They are just collecting money. My sister is in Babcock and the school is wack.
Re: Covenant University by Seun(m): 5:37pm On Jun 14, 2005
Jogego, I don't think it's reasonable for anyone to be campaigning against the private universities we have when we actually need to have more. Covenant University could increase their fees and still be fully booked, because the demand for quality university education still exceeds supply by far.

I will keep repeating this until it sinks in: the very worst that could happen is that the 'rich' people will go to private universities thus freeing up space for the 'poor' people to attend the federal universities. Nobody loses, therefore any complaint about the establishment of private universities like Covenant University is not logical.

Nobody is forcing anybody to attend Covenant University. If anyone feels that the fee is to much, please let the person go ahead and keep re-taking JAMB until he/she is finally admitted into a federal of state university of choice. If indeed the fee was too much then the university will be under-patronized, which wil force them to reduce the price. Expensive education is better than no education.

IAH, based on what I know, Covenant University is better than Babcock, in terms of the infrastructure that is on ground to facilitate learning. But even Babcock is better than sitting at home.

The fact that I dont see eye to eye with you on this fees stuff doesnt mean that I dont agree with their being private universities, all am saying is that since you are soliciting for Covenant, tell me in what way, this university provides for the masses. Am sure even a lot of kids that go to that church cant afford the fees.

Oluwaseun, don't compare these private schools with sitting at home. What school is not better than sitting at home? Even learning a trade (Tailorlogy, Hairdresserology) is better than sitting at home. Rate them based on the educational standard that is needed for a country and their fees and see if they meet up to expectation. Now that is what I am talking about.
Re: Covenant University by Seun(m): 5:56pm On Jun 14, 2005
In answer to jogego:
Ok, I'm going to repeat it for the third and last time. Covenant University admits those who can afford the money. So instead of using the money to bribe JAMB officials and admission officers of federal and state universities, they can use the money to send their children to private schools.

Each "rich kid" that is admitted into a private university frees up space in the public universities. The end result is that more of the 'poor' kids will be able to make the cut-off marks for their federal/state universities of choice and get educated. That is how covenant university helps 'the masses' who can't afford 250,000 per annum.

You would be surprisd at how many working class people can afford 250,000 per annum (21,000 naira a month, jogego. $148). Considering the fact that Internet access at modem speed costs 15,000 a month, I'd say 21,000 per month for quality university education is pretty cheap.

Finally, since I won't get 10 kobo if you decide to send someone you know to the university, I am not going to discuss the topic any further. I have a relative who schools at the university, and I commend what they are doing.

IAH: Prior to the establishment of these private universities, many more people had to sit at home!

So you are saying that a danfo driver can send his son to this school? Or is the danfo driver not ahuman being? Or is he wrong to want to break the chain of poverty in his family? The danfo driver, Iya Silifa the pepper seller, Gani the mechanic, this are the real masses and this are the people who need this education cos they cant afford otherwise. Can they afford N250k per annum? The fact that it is peanuts to u does not make it peanuts to eveybody
Re: Covenant University by Imnakoya(m): 8:36pm On Jun 14, 2005
I can't help but wade in. The pictures posted on CU site are quite good, I hope their standard is equally good too. There is no equality in life, and life is not fair. So CU is not for everyone, in fact university education is not for everyone. It is only in Nigeria that we assume the next educational level after high school is the university. What will happen to the economy if everyone is a university graduate?

In any developed economy, there is room for skilled labor, and that is where the polytechs and technical schools come. These are the "drivers"of the advanced economies. They earn good wages, in fact, many in the U.S (auto techies or mechanics) earn way more than many graduates with Master degrees! If Nigeria can learn to do things right, there won't be a lot of stress over education- because there will be many options, and parents won't have to 'steal' to send their kids to places like CU. The deregulation of education must include the polytechs and tech schools, then we will have a balanced system. In fact If I have the resources that is where I will put my money.

I was just looking through the website and I found out that there are only 4351 students in the University. That's about 0.0004% of students in Nigeria. Shows that only the privileged few can afford it. shocked

Nigerians seem to hold awfully high expectations. I mean how many people do you expect one university to hold.? its doing its part. I know someone that goes there and if she didin, she'd be sitting at home like her brother. and now she's almost done. I can't understand the problem. Even with thier pricing.

And therein lies the problem. Christianity is all about Naira and Kobo nowadays much in the same way that Jesus chased people out of the house of God for turning it into a den of robbers, to be honest, it's just a way of making tax free income.

I see your point jogego, the school is owned by a church and they are supposed to be their brother's keeper. The less privileged should have a fair share of the best education but having said that, the best things in life doesn't come cheap, bills need to be settled. But one thing that can be done though; is for the school to give scholarships to the less privileged since they are a religious group and God does love a cheerful giver.

I think at this point i agree with whizkid, definitely they are a church running a school, but then, they've gat to equip the school and take care of other necessary bills. They were recently rated the best of all private schools because they are well equipped (laboratories e.t.c). One thing though is that they should reduce the fees, i mean 250 is not much but still much.
Re: Covenant University by obua: 1:59pm On Jun 19, 2005
We make lots of noise in this country in ignorance. The NUC( national universities commission) clearly states that the cost of running a university per year in Nigeria is roughly 390,000 ie as at 2002 ( when covenant uni came up). So coveneant university is actually running their uni at a loss. Come to think of it , when last was a new federal university opened up in Nigeria last in Nigeria. what of a new government owned primary school, secondary etc in your neighbourhood. It is only private schools. The population is growing at aabout 2-3% per annum and no new edecational instouttions are being established by the government.
The fees we pay at the government universities are not necessarily the cost of education.
I believe that if your father is a danfo driver , you can still go to school. Your future is only about 20% determined by parentage. You still have a choice. I have seen people without parents overcome and excel.

How many of us remember how much it was to get GSM when it first came to Nija? Most of us thought it was only for the rich but today what do we have? Even primary sch students use it. It's more like a toy these days.

It might take some time but t'll sure become affordable to some extent with more licences given out.
Re: Covenant University by joftech(m): 6:56am On Jul 29, 2005
I see education as an investment that must pay a real nice dividend at the end of the day. If you are not from a uber-rich family stay off all those private institutions.

When you spend a million for a 4 years course minus other expenses, what are the possibility of you been gainfully employed at the end of the wahala, i see that as a bad venture, if i have a rich dad that's ready to "waste" his money, i will rather take the money and face business straight.

1 million in 4 years will bring me enough returns than education. Omo i be entrepreneur (and all am about is the profit margin).
