[size=20pt] Ironically, Ojukwu was never ever able to witness his own megalomania. Gbulie claimed that in Biafra the man known as “the General of the People’s Army” “acted egotistically and emotionally and did not attend to practical and pragmatic matters” and that “millions of Igbos paid a horrible price” for his “hubris”.

Leadership landed on his lap by accident. It was a task he was inadequately prepared for – just like the Biafrans were not really prepared for the federal response to the secession. All Ojukwu had to offer was hot air. The Biafrans saw very painfully that this was not enough. In the period since his return from exile all Nigeria got from Ojukwu were self-promotion and the feeding of an over-inflated ego. While his place is guaranteed in the history of Nigeria because of the civil war, he really didn’t come close to my understanding of the term “hero”, but I pray that God is kind to his soul.
