Hello fam. I got into Ottawa yesterday.

It was pretty smooth going through immigration. Going out exploring today. For others coming in, all of the very best.
Cheers.

The fact that he is a university representative doesn't mean that he understands how to fill study permit application forms to CIC. His job is to help with admissions or to advertise the school, not to fill and understand visa application forms. Also, his being white has nothing to do with it (no offense, just saying). The guy is wrong, actually (I'm usually not this blunt lol).

University admissions representatives have compartmentalized jobs, and I wouldn't expect them to know how to fill student visa application forms correctly. This is not their job. They do not work very closely with or for CIC, and they can't even influence CIC's decisions.

"Funds Available For Your Stay" refers to funds available for your time in Canada. (read through Step 2 in the hyperlinked page). To me, it is pretty clear; and every link I found online corroborates this.
Aha! Much better, there's the link to clarify the info to be provided in that field, so everyone is on the same page.

In reference to the bold text, I once argued with a Canadian University representative (White guy) about summing up tuition +room and board + others to get funds available for your stay and he refuted. What I finally filled was the image provided.
To be honest, that's pretty strange. Like @thesoj said, I believe funds available refers to tuition + room&board + other expenses. For example, in my application, I put in 80k as funds available and thankfully, I got my TRV.

Since you say that's what you were told though, it's fine.
Different strokes for different folks.

good morning everyone

i'ld like to share my experience with you guys from MMA to Toronto. if you travailing on a student visa pls make sure ur offer letter is in ur hand luggage and your original WEAC or Neco result as print out copies were not allowed and most students traveling were delayed boarding their flights.

my experience at immigrations Toronto

i'ld advice while on queue to see an immigration officer just look out for immigration officer with less wahala which was what i did to avoid mad scrutiny

then make sure u pay at least half ur tuition cos they demanded for our tuition receipt as a prof we were coming to study a Ghanian guy was almost denied entry cos he didnt pay fees bur he was able to prove the school asked to pay on arrival how ever an Arab girl was denied entry as she couldn't prove shes coming to study. don't know if they allowed her later bur she was told to stand at the waiting room

then make sure u have ur account statement to show prove of funds and also show them ur bank cards to show you have access to the accounts.

surprisingly the immigration officer i went to asked me the length of my program which is a year he smiled and said i know you've got your eyes on PR i smiled and said well.. True he briefed me how to go about it and how to extend my visa if i wish to bur i should do it legit.

Thanks everyone for your support if you need any help am willing to assist as long as it within my capacity. And to all TRV hopefuls don't worry too much your approval mail is here keep the hope and faith alive we serve a living God.

Question please @the bold part above. For individuals who will receive monthly allowances from home, will having the SOA of the sponsor do, or do they expect to see a SOA belonging to the student, fully funded and corroborating the cards presented? E.G. Diamond bank SOA for Mr. A and a card showing Mr. A's name on it?
Hello gurus in the house.
Kindly assist with the question.

Thanks.

Thanks for the info Kenny and Taike.

If I'm to say why you weren't asked, I'll say it's cos you're a PhD student cos both of your arrived at the same Toronto airport yesterday.... So the issue of many students still holds for Taike.

PhD students na visa consulates' pikins in all the 1st world countries cos they value research more than anything else. They are always treated specially...

***I'm yet to see any PhD student that applied for visa in any country's visa consulate that was denied visa... ***

Welcome to Maple land. May God bless all your hustles.

Today marks a year of my entry into Maple land, I will go to midday mass today and thank God for His blessings and favours so far, while still asking Him for the best in all my life endeavours...

I think it is very close to the university. The prices I have seen range from $38 or so, but for shared rooms if I'm not wrong. Check out the website from the previous response I gave.

You can also check YMCA and Ottawa Backpacker's Inn or so for other short term places.

To any UOttawa/Other canadian varsity/college scholar in the building, clarifications needed - I haven't gotten accommodation though I have applied to the school. I would be leaving for Canada at the end of the month. QUESTION: What make shift accommodation can someone get as soon as you get to Canada or when do you hunt for the accommodation in Ottawa. [Just in case the school doesn't reply before I leave for canada] huh huh
You can look at the University's Short Term Accommodation. However, I think these won't be available after September 1, since you mentioned you will leave at the end of the month.

You could also search for a hotel. But it is possible to get a place after arriving in September. The prices might be on the high-side; however, you might get lucky.

Speaking of accommodation however, I have a room in a 3 bedroom apartment close to the University, if you're interested. You can send a mail if you want. Cheers.

Hello Guys.. congrats to those who already got their TRVs and God speed to those still hopeful. i am about to make my own application after my first delay last year. i have a couple of questions here and there just to be sure. . firstly, last year the agent i applied through, in the family info form, filled only one sibling for me. now that i am applying again, by myself do i include my other two siblings? or stick to the one sibling? secondly, my father who is my co-sponsor, with about 3m, has this amount in a fixed deposit. and he has the fixed deposit certificate. would he still need to liquidate the amount into his account before printing his SOA for my application? or would the fixed deposit certificate just serve fine? thanks for your help so far guys. kiss kiss kiss
For the second, he does not need to liquidate before printing his SOA. Just get the deposit certificate he got when it was being booked. That's what I did.

For the first, like thesoj suggested, I think you should add all names with a letter I think explaining the reason.

I'm not sure but i think they ask if you've made an application before. If they refer to previous applications while looking through new ones, I doubt they'll pass by the sudden increase in your number of siblings.

Hello guys.
Glory to God. I was delayed yesterday based on four reasons:
Insufficient funds, travel history, personal asset, and family ties in Canada n Nigeria.

Truth be told, this CIC style of processing applications for months is the worst ever. They need to review it. Na their mate be USCIS.

So, after rejoicing with you guys and my family for 1 weeks, I received a shocker. Lol! I'm still trying to recuperate. This is a very bad feeling.
All guys expecting TRV, my candid advise, to avoid hypertension, kindly prepare for the worst.
If you have been called for medical, pls, know that that DOESN'T guarantee a TRV.
This is my story.

Chai! So, you guys will be consoling me now. Hahahahahahahahaha!
Wow. It is well. Glad to see you're keeping your head up.

Was the car manufactured before 1981? Then it doesn't have the VIN we need to find the answers you're looking for.
Is the car brand new? It may be so new that there are no records currently on file. Check back soon, once it's had some time on the road.

Hello,

I'll advise you get a PTA (Personal Travel Allowance) from Diamond bank or Fidelity bank (The 2 banks I know with the lowest exchange rate when I did mine 2 years back). The max you can get with this is $4,000USD which you can come to Canada with and convert back to CAD as soon as you open your account at any of the Canadian Financial institutions.

In addition, if you still need more massive transfer, initiate the form A transfer before leaving with your bank (1st or Diamond bank is ideal in this case too cos of their low rates) by telling your account officer about your intentions. When you get to Canada, open an account, send down your bank details back home and let one of your family members complete the transaction for you (reason for payment is usually tuition and /or upkeep). All that will be required is your bank details, admission letter, NYSC discharge cert, Degree cert (not too sure).

Lastly, since the placing of the annoying limit of $300/day on offshore withdrawal from ATM by CBN, this option has further being advisable for POS transaction (there is no charge as well as limit for POS transactions with your debit cards, master or visa).
I'll advise Diamond bank for offshore ATM transactions as well cos they have one of the lowest conversion rates and their charge is $240 per withdrawal.

Also note that visa card conversion rate is lower than mastercard irrespective of the financial institution.

N/B: While I was taking my courses during the fall session, this study about the different transactions was ongoing all thru as well. So, basically talking based on personal experience.
This is very detailed and helpful. Thanks a lot

Yah!!you right abt d high price of USD$$ in parallel market its very costly (230-240naira per $). Person money go red wit dt kind exchange rate.

But he can purchase Basic Travelling Allowance(BTA) in banks here in Nig bt they wont sell more than $5000USD at normal CBN exchange rate.

For the amount of cash that travellers are expected to have,it is not illegal for him to have less than $10,000CAN with him or the equivalent in foreign currency.
check here:http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5052-eng.html
I'll look into the BTA. Thanks a lot.

The problem is the exorbitant exchange rate these Nig banks charge for using atm outside the country.
GTB na confirm thief in that line. They will charge 13-17naira more of the normal cbn exchange rate and 420naira per withdrawal (suicide mission).

For the prepaid card from First bank, it is a good idea bt dnt try the atm withdrawal cos u will be chrge 3% of the naira equivalent of wht u will be withdrawing (killer pass). But advantage of the card, you won't be charged for using POS or online transactions for the card (so cool).

Have been monitoring the card exchange rates for sometime now.I will soon get a bank wit low and constant rates for withdrawal outside the country.
I like that POS part then. Very nice.

1. Do u mean from Nija to Canada? If yes, then get a Gtbank naira MasterCard or First bank prepaid credit card, u can use both over there but dont forget ATM charges.
If am to move 15K cad, wat i will do is deposit 5k in my Account and travel wt 10k cash, cos ATM charges about #420 on each transaction if am nt mistaken
Wow. That charge na die o. 420 naira for each withdrawal. I think I'll just travel with cash and deposit some in my account just like you suggested. Thanks.

Good morning house.

There are 2 questions I'd like to ask.

1. What's the best way to move funds out of the country now, since there's a restriction on cash that can be moved physically (CAD 10,000 or so, not sure), since one cannot open a Canadian bank account from here to do a transfer? Also, considering the restrictions by banks on foreign currency.

2. From experience and personal opinions, what's the most reliable Nigerian bank to bank with from Canada?

Thank you all.

Good Morning to y'all

Ottawa People!

Carleton! Algoquin! Ottawa U!

A friendly reminder to all TRV holders and soon-to-be holders heading down here to Ottawa. There will be scheduled free airport pickups from Ottawa Macdonald–Cartier International Airport.(YOW) starting very soon.

This is organized by a non profit Organization here in Ottawa.

We felt the help shouldn't just end here after receiving your TRVs. Some of us benefitted immensely from the tips and advice from this group and felt moved to do our best to ease your coming here to Canada.

We hope people from other provinces and cities can emulate this however they can because it goes a long way.

PM me for more details.

P.S: Some people PMd me a while back but I couldn't respond on time. Sorry about that nigerianewbie and ...I dunno... lol...You can pm me again.

Cheers!
Many thanks for the initiative. I will do that again shortly.

First of all, relax, don't panic...make sure you're directing all emails to your Departmental Grad Asst. and any other contact you can find, he/she is your fastest bet of getting a quick response. Then, understand something, If you don't have a dated Offer letter yet...there's really no deadline to be worried about (asides visa app.), nothing is counting. Just concentrate on getting through to someone and receiving the Offer. Besides, UOttawa can be very flexible, the worst will be to defer till January (and that's not so bad).
Have you received any recommendation from Faculty of grad studies?? Because, I think this comes before the main letter itself. The "congratulations: admission offer" was probably forwarded from your Infoweb, I can't even remember receiving any email like this.
Lol! And yes, I received the Letter in good condition, It was sent by Post not Courier, it took about 6 weeks to get to me. This was after I had already received a soft copy of it.
@TLOTRS
Very good advice Kepner has given. Check for the right mail address for your program.
For instance, I haven't received the physical copy of the letter which my program sent yet. I had to contact them way back then and they said the electronic copy was fine enough.
Since you haven't even received the PDF copy of the letter, just keep your fingers crossed; hopefully, they will respond to your mail soonest.

Cheers.
