Playing with your back to goal is not easy. Alonso or any other defensive player might struggle with that and more attacks will break down.

might?

might implies probability...which means Alonso could also succeed

i will take Alonso's Might over the certainty of Morata's play these days.

one might stuggle to hold up play, the other falls down every 10 seconds when attempting to hold the ball up.

You maybe right about defensive players struggling uo front. if i was asked to guess the position of a player who has more yellow cards (9) than goals and assists combined (8 ) since october, i would probably say defender...

I'm not very sure aout his ability to shrug off defenders. He may be better than morata in that aspect.

His goals show he has the instinct.

Alonso is the same height as Morata but he's clearly a lot heavier and stronger.

Remember that goal that Alonso scored against Arsenal where he nodded both ball and Bellerin, and bellerin fainted in the air?

You can't physically bully Alonso like Morata

As funny as it may sound, i am looking at rudiger. His kponkpon style would be needed upfront. He said he started as a striker.

Giroud was just moving his legs yesterday as if he has elephantiasis. Bad.

I'm actually not joking.

Alonso is already a striker in all but name. He averages more touches in the penalty box per game than the likes of Jesse Lingard, and actually sees more of the ball in the Final 3rd than Morata himself.

His game is about off the ball movement, and is only really hampered attacking wise by the fact that he has to retreat to his own box area several times a game.

Alonso is really a false 9. Why not just make him a real 9? His defensive game still leaves a lot to be desired, but offensively he could probably do some real damage. He's good in the air, tall, strong, and has a great eye for goal.

Surely, I cant be the only person thinking this?

Conte handed Morata his first start since early January, with Hazard and Willian behind him and Pedro dropping to the bench. The dynamic which had almost been utilised to perfection against Barcelona was altered, and Conte sought to fix what was not broken.

The experiment started well. Morata was bright, with his characteristic darting runs and intelligent movement creating openings. It was his fine first-time volley that struck the bar from an excellent early Chelsea move.

But as the minutes clocked by, the Spaniard’s influence on the game dwindled. He could no longer find space, was being beaten for pace and in the air by Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof, and has now gone exactly 540 minutes without scoring. He has more yellow cards (9) than combined goals and assists since the start of October (8 )

Mustafi has played for Germany in both of their last two major tournaments, so we can assume that he is no dud or dunce. Yet there is something about Arsenal, a particular Arsenal-itis, that seeps into the souls of defenders and turns them into fools.

Despite what I will say in the next conclusion, Mustafi was shambolic for the goal. He should have been goal side of Aguero, aware of the danger and aware of the offside laws. Even when he had been challenged, Mustafi could still have jumped to try and head the ball. And then after he had missed the header, he should have sprinted towards his own goal to try and affect play rather than complaining to the referee. Three mistakes, all amateur.

On commentary, Gary Neville described it as “schoolboy” defending, but even that is kind. There are nursery nurses who would tut and shake their heads silently if they witnessed such weakness in a toddler’s defensive proficiency. Five minutes on the naughty step

You are scapegoating Chris when you are say it was his fault for the first goal.
He should bully Lukaku. Is Chris going to develop muscle required to do that overnight?
.

i never said Chris should bully Lukaku. i said Chris should put Lukaku off balance and pointed out what Azpi and Rudiger would likely have done in that situation.

You said Rudiger is bigger than christensen. But Azpi is our smallest cb and he was able to prevent Lukaku from bullying him in the same manner christensen was bullied. obviously you were silent on my Azpi comparison, because Agenda.

Chris plays as an intelligent defender who uses his positioning and spatial awareness for clever defending and interception and he does so fantastically well. Azpi and Rudiger are aggressive in their approach. Chris isn't. Probably never will be. So he was on Lukaku as he would. It's not a mistake. He can't manufacture aggression overnight. So why blame him?

if i remove the name Christensen and replaced it with Morata, it would be almost exactly the same argument you made for the Spaniard.

We can see that one falling left right and centre now.

Anyway Chris already had his hands around Lukaku, which is itself an aggresive move. So your point is completely invalid. All i said is that Chris should have done more to put Lukaku off balance

We're talking football here mate not chess. It's a contact sport and all players need to be able to make 'contact' effectively, especially defenders. Thats a non-negotiable aspect of the game.

in any case, my point was actually made regarding that instance in isolation. Just as in the Barca game, i only highlighted Andreas's complicity in the goal conceded AFTER you guys tried to blame Fab.

in all of this, i havent called for him to be dropped or calles him derogatory names. i only criticised his fuckup...and he DID fuckup.

so to say im scapegoating Chris is a bit of a stretch there, Mr fantastic.

Meanwhile you don't hold Bakayoko to the same standards. That's why it is scapegoating

well, conflating my Bakayoko agenda to objective discussion on other players is your mistake.

i have a clear bias towards Bakoyoko that is not even football related and everyone knows that.

If you need a disclaimer for you to understand that my stance on Bakayoko issue may be motivated by material gain, i am happy to provide one anytime i mention his name, lest you confuse financial interest for agape love cheesy

Nothing is wrong with Chris jare. Chris is a fantastic young defender (only 21) who will go on to achieve great things.
He has prevented infinitely more goals and won more points this season, than he has lost.
We should desist from the business of persistent scapegoating. We need to accept that sometimes, players makes mistakes and move on.

We were being told earlier that there are only a few things Rudiger will allow and we watch how Lukaku was allowed to look like Messi, while Rudiger was watching awe of Lukaku's grace. Chris was rooted to his feet but Rudiger should have shut Lukaku down.

oga hold your L gracefully jare

you were the one making excuses for chris today

he was implicated in the first goal and went down to easily, you said its because Rudiger is 3cm taller. meanwhile i saw Azpi push that same Lukaku off the ball by the touchline in the same game...and Azpi is still smaller.

second goal, you're blaming rudiger for allowing a cross that was going straight to Chris. All he had to do is keep his head.

Nobody has scapegoated Chris. Until last week, i think we were almost all unanimous in believing he's one of thr best players at the club.

However, when he fücked up like he did against Barca, and was duly criticised, people like you came out to cape for him and try to blame Fab.

when he messed up for first goal today again, you said he did nothing wrong because he banged his head. Even Jamie Carragher at half time mentioned that Chris should have stood up quicker than he did to defend that ball.

when he messed up for the second, now it's rudigers fault.

is Chris immune from criticism because he's a youth player?

Are we no longer allowed to point out obvious truths because Chris is 21?

@Nihilist,

I think Ibime is speaking in general and not directly about today's game
Especially since people here were calling for Fabregas to play more in the squad and folks were asking for Matic to leave

Just my two cents.

Bakayoko did not play todays game, and Fabregas came on after the goal that cosigned us to 5th had been scored.

if Chris did not make those mistakes today, we could very well be 3rd right now...not 5th.

so blame should be laid at the appropriate door.

Ibime is now trying to scapegoat two players that were not even on the pitch when Manyoo scored instead of facing one of the main culprits responsible

what does Bakayoko and Fabregas have to do with the fact that Christensen yet again lost his concentration and cost us the match?
