I don’t care the number of goals scored by attackers and defenders, I care about trophies, even if they come on the back of 1:0 wins. We need to win a spoon for the numbers to count.
Hopefully, we win something next season. This season is gone already. |

Ibime: Thanks boss. Don't you think Feds withdrawing liquidity by increasing interest rates would cause a serious market pullback? With average PE Ratio approaching 40, I'm becoming cautious that the market is overheated. There has never been a market cycle where average PE Ratio over 30 was not followed by a crash. Another thing I track is share buybacks which have pushed equity prices up aggressively over the last 5 years. The cash demands of companies dealing with the Pandemic means buybacks are falling to record lows over the last year which removes buying pressure from equities. The way SPACS are proliferating is another cause for concern and sign of a bubble. SPACS have not been making this much noise since just before the Tech crash at the turn of the century. It's like everyone is rushing to list before a bubble pops.
I am seriously considering switching my pension units to a fixed low rate cash pension in the medium term to avoid stories that touch, then come back to a normal pension plan after any pullback. I remember when market pulled back like 25% in March last year, most pension funds pulled back 30% or so. Luckily they recovered and finished much higher, but in the event of a serious pullback/ crash, one would rather be in a defensive Fixed income position and forego the usual 5% growth for this year, then jump back in after any pullback with a more aggressive policy to take advantage of low prices. Would you say that's advisable? Central banks in developed markets are not necessarily tightening policies right now. They will continue to maintain low interest rates even if inflation increases. Don't forget that credibility is important, if they suddenly start withdrawing liquidity, then the investor community will lose faith in them (especially since they promised to maintain low rates for a long time). Honestly, I don't see a crash in the immediate or nearest future, but no one knows! Of course, buybacks and dividends will drop because companies need cash. Why defensive fixed income position(s)? What about switching to utilities or a sector with some stable contracted cashflows? Defensive industries give you some upside opportunity + downside protection. |

Ibime: @ nitrogen, Amoto94, when do you think current stock market bubble will pop. I'm becoming more and more convinced we are not far, especially US equities. Quite a tricky one. We are seeing a consistent increase in US 10-year treasury, which means two things. Maybe investors are gradually selling off bonds and entering the equities market, but then if the pace is faster, then they are switching to alternative assets rather than equities because they believe that interest rates should rise since the govt will continue to borrow to dole stimulus packages over the next few weeks. One thing that I know is, many US residents will receive $1,400 early next week, which might mitigate whatever negative stuffs institutional investors have in mind. Normally, an increase in interest rate means higher confidence in the equities market. But rapid increase is quite dangerous! |

Someone that has only 1 assist in a free scoring City side I did not goof abeg. Check my posts. Maybe City is an exception. I said that most AMs don’t score lots of goals (more than 10 league goals in a season) but provide assists. Of course KDB at city is a very good example. Pep has only decided to have Gundogan as an AM and/or 8 because he is very prolific, moreso, City don’t have a striker. Jesus has not replaced Agusto yet! |

I really don't know if we have been watching the same team but City have been hardly cut out on the break since that loss to Spurs or thereabout...They're now more compact without the ball so this your talk of Rodri having to cover huge space is strange to me...
Rodri that isn't pacy how on earth will he cover a huge space? You still don’t get it. I already said that one of the CBs step up to to support Rodri when they are caught out on the break. |

Leyqute: We have to get Mc or Fred to handle the McFred position effectively (easier said than done, could be impossible and a new arrival might be the option) for another AM-CM hybrid player like VDB to slot in easily into the team This right here makes sense. McFred cannot do DM and CM and still support attackers. We need one of them to become the sitting DM, then another midfielder to support Bruno, and once in a while move back to the CM position. |

patrickmuf: Gundogan for instance is starts at CM but pushes up the pitch as they attack...Most folks look at the position o Gundogan when they attack and think he plays as an attacking midfielder...
If we're that dominant, Pogba too will push up and people will say he plays as an attacking midfielder. Gundogan, technically plays as an attacking midfielder at City. If a team dominates for 60-70 minutes out of 90 and a CM mostly plays in AM position throughout the game, then the initial position does not matter. One question, how come there is a huge space for Rodri to cover when City surrenders possession (completely)? |

GloryIsaac: Just to understand the previous discussion on how McFred’s limitations play a role in hindering VDB’s excellence for the team, watch this City vs Everton match.
Like every other City game, they utilize Rodri or Fernandinho in a sole defensive midfield position while having two attacking midfielders in front.
Sought of a ‘W’ shape where each point depicts a player. ‘W’ for the back 5, ‘W’ for the front 5.
This is why Mahrez and B.Silva are free to tension on the right wing, while Sterling and Foden tension on the left wing. Both positions with occasional support from the fullbacks.
At United, due to McFred’s limitations amidst brain farts from the Centre-backs, the team has to utilize a diamond midfield formation to pose enough threat but this formation means that the team makes do with two strikers rather than the preferred front 3.
Ndidi would have been the best for this role, as he’ll certainly bring the much needed balance to the midfield while having the abilities of McFred and even better than both individuals.
VDB loves to sneak in-between the opponents backline, but McFred either lack the simple passing ability to deliver good balls or the tenacity to anchor the midfield. Exactly my thoughts and submissions. Pep does two AMs, Rodri is the only DM. Man Utd would either play double 4 or have some sort of a diamond formation which almost looks like two DMs as the game proceeds. I don’t have issues with McFred combo when we play big teams, but we should avoid it when we play other teams abeg. |

patrickmuf: 0ep plays with a 4, a 10 and an 8...Busquet, Xavi and Iniesta...
At City, Rodri is Busquet, Gundogan is Xavi and KFB is the attacking midfielder, Iniesta...Gundogan joins the attack because City dominates most times and they don't have a certain Messi that creates and scores such that the AMF isn't overburdened...
In all, Pep's tactics sees them recover the ball high up the pitch and force their opponent back 2hilst pushing up to close up the spaces...Only team with fast attackers and good dribblers will trouble Pep but even then, he now isn't as he'd of starting Fernandinho against such team to nullify their treat on the counter... If there is no Messi, then Gundogan is not Xavi, he plays a completely different position. Xavi does not join the attack every time because there is Messi, but at City, Gundogan is always attacking, if city loses the ball completely, the central midfield becomes open because Gundogan and KDB are still trying to recover to bridge the gap. At that point the defence comes in to help in the midfield. So technically, KDB and Gundogan are AMs. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by nitrogen(m): 11:20pm On Feb 15, 2021 |
patrickmuf: Even when David Silva was still at City, whenever he and De Bruyne starts, one of them takes up a more slightly withdrawn role...
The dominance of City will make you think Cancelo is a winger but it's really not the case...If we get Pep, you'll find Pogba further up the pitch because he will dominate games forcing our opponents to retreat to their own half...In such instance, you'd think we are playing with two CMs...Pep is that good, he will make sure his LB and RB push up forcing your wingers to go on the defensive and this frees up one of their CB to push further up the pitch while his CM pushes up the pitch...
When you watch City play you will realize the importance of a good coach... So tell me something. If a manager says Gundogan is a CM, but during games that they dominate, the guy is closer to the opponent’s box, what does that tell you? It means the formation has changed, and since they mostly dominate games, there is no CM. Maybe on paper, he is a CM, but on the pitch of play, he has become an attacking midfielder. How come when they lose the ball, you still won’t see Gundogan in the middle, how come the space is still there? Forget, Pep plays double AMs, on paper it might look like double CMs and 1 DM, but when playing, it becomes 2 AMs and 1 DM. Another team like LCFC that does not dominate play every time, only one AM is playing, you typically have a CM that supports the AM, but still maintain his CM position and a DM that stays. |

patrickmuf: I watch most matches and I see the position the players take rather than depend on all those site...
Check livescore for a line up in a particular match day then check Flashscore and other sites and you will notice how all of them interpret the lineup differently...
When City are in the ascendancy, Gundogan pushes up the pitch whilst their fullbacks cover for him by tucking into the midfield...It's all about the tactical flexibility of Pep and not necessarily about Gundogan's starting position... I agree that it's tactical flexibility, but the fact is Pep uses two AMs. When they attack, Gundogan pushes forward, what about when they are chasing the ball? Do you think that Gundogan and KDB/Silva recover quickly to the central midfield to ultimately help/support Rodri? No. The gap is always there, what they typically do is try to press and collect the ball back ASAP or have one of the defenders step up to support Rodri. I think I watch City more than you do. We all know how Pep's team suffers when they face a team that breaks and transitions easily from defence to attack, reason he tries to rely mostly on one of the CBs to support Rodri, since most times, the AMs are closer to the opponent's box. |

patrickmuf: Don't be deceived by his goal scoring exploits..Gundogan is a controller...Man City are very dominant that's why he is always up the pitch together with the fact that he mostly played as an 8 whilst he was with Dortmund... City's set up before KDB became injured. Check the space between Gundogan + KDB, and Rodri. When they are in the opponent's half, one of the CBs steps up to the midfield to 'support' Rodri.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by nitrogen(m): 10:17pm On Feb 15, 2021 |
eph12: I'm not sure I understand your point here My point is when City attacks (which they do 60-70 percent in a game), they have one of their CBs become a DM while Rodri turns to a CM + DM. The remaining two midfielders are AMs throughout, the style of play ensures that they snuff out threats/risks before they get escalated. When almost all your players are in the opponents' half, the reasonable option when you lose the ball is to recover it ASAP, if you don't, then the midfield/defense gets exposed especially when the opponent has fast forwards and are good with counter-attacks. Rodri suffers the most when the opponent is able to transition quickly beyond City's front men. See the picture below. Laporte had to step in to help, the other midfielders are in the front.
