I did not play football professionally. I have not been following football for 100 years like you guys. But, if you have been following football for a long time and still think that there is nothing Ferdinand would have done there, then I can't help you.
Probably O'Shea or one of the midfielders should also take 'some' blame there, they literarily just watched Messi get into position, I think Messi and Eto switching positions created serious issues for Utd defenders.

But there was no way Fagbo would have covered 2-3 yards in 1-2 secs.

You and your goons, keep shifting the goal post. We dey talk aerial ball contest, you are saying something else. Everything is based on the assumption that you are perfectly able to contest with opposition players for the ball.

Kuku tell a defender to contest a ball that is 5-yards away from him, and 1 yard away from the opposition player.

Better stop learning from Airmark and Dayo.

See Ferdinand looking like mumu. If it was VVD, you, nitrogen and raumdeuter wouldn't let us hear word.

What happened to looking over his shoulder and tracking Messi's run since he was the only threat unmarked and closer to him, before the cross?

I can give multiple gifs where VVD tracked such runs and headed the ball to safety (pro-activeness). But to you, nothing is there in nodding aerial balls away. You no know ball grin
Bros, stop na, what was the discussion about Na? Ferdinand vs Messi, there was no contest at all, it was a gift to Messi, the space was too much for Ferdinand to cover and contest for the ball.

Messi would not have even tried to jump, assuming Ferdinand was closer to the ball.

No doubt, VVD and Fagbo are almost the same, the difference is Ferdinand has done this winning multiple trophies, let your VVD get there first.

Also, please note that Ferdinand was beginning to lose it, he was already 32/33, played 4 UCL semi-finals and 3 finals in 5 years. I'd easily pick Ferdinand at that age vs VVD at 27/28.

Vidic sh1ts on both of them.

Don't misinterpret what i said. You definitely need a proper football brain to play in midfield for Liverpool. Do Lingard and Perreira possess the same level of technical ability and tactical intelligence as Henderson and Wijnaldum? Do you think they just run around like headless chickens with no attention to team shape and structure?
No, Cleverley played the same role very well under Fergie. Hardwork, speed, quick ball release, no creativity.

Henderson has bn dispossessed just 4 times in 25 games...... Fabinho just 5 times in 20 games.

Lingard and Perrera can loose the ball 10 times in 30 minutes....
Because Henderson doesn't hold ball for long. It's the system. The midfielders are supposed to recover the ball and release it quickly to the defenders.

What you’re saying here, basically, is that you don’t need a proper football brain to function in Liverpool’s midfield. Creativity, passing skills and spatial awareness are not required. You just have to be fit and be willing to run around tirelessly for the whole 90.

Throw in Milner, Lingard and Perreira and Liverpool will still dominate and score goals.
Exactly!

Expert17 is right here. You can't play possession football without having technically-gifted midfielders who can hold on to the ball and pick a pass.

Liverpool don't play possession football in the truest sense of the term. Yes, they might have the majority of possession in most of their games but that is down to their quality as a team rather than any system or deliberate tactics. The best teams know how to keep the ball, pass it and control the game. The degree or the level at which they do it is what separates the ones that play actual possession football e.g Barca and City from the others.
What/which pass are the midfielders picking? Safe simple ones to defenders or what?

Because you guys are trying to trivialize stopping aerial ball as a CB. I’m trying to let you know aerial ball is not easy for every CB as you are trying to make us believe.
You already have your answers. There is no way a typical defence won't be able to handle aerial balls, it's a default characteristic of a defence. Except the set-up no make sense.

Stop hailing VVD for handling aerial balls. It doesn't make any sense, he is even a very tall player, so I don't get it at all.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by nitrogen(m): 8:39pm On May 09, 2020

There are similarities and differences in the systems employed by Liverpool and City. Liverpool are a more direct side than City who would hold on to the ball for longer spells. They both play out from the back but in different ways. Liverpool fullbacks are actually wingers in reality while Man City full backs like to play on the inside. The Liverpool's midfield trio's job is simple: Recover and Recycle. No frills. They are to maintain balance and keep the structure. The fullbacks and to a lesser intent the front 3 provide the creativity. Vvd and some times Matip can bring the ball out from the back so there is lesser need for Henderson and co to drop deep. The fullbacks are also comfortable tucking in in halfspaces and central areas. Trent had his football education as a 6 so that helps in this regard.

All in all, it is unfair to say Liverpool midfielders are not good enough technically because they are not as prominently involved in their team's possession game. The system they play does not encourage this.
Thanks for confirming that the midfielders are not as prominently involved in the team's possession game. These guys only recover the ball for the defenders and attackers. Nothing more. Meanwhile, if your job is to recover the ball, you will definitely have high interceptions, tackles and even pass accuracy. There is no risk, you are just passing to the guys making use of the ball. I struggle with people that just watch football without trying to understand what is going on, Na to just shout goal dem sabi.

Now tell me why you think their (Liverpool's midfielders) scope of work is limited. Don't say that Klopp has always preferred that style, he tried to adapt his style, he realised it was becoming difficult for him to play creative football with his hardworking midfielders, he had to by-pass the midfield for good play.

You have changed the topic so many times

1. From comparing Henderson to Fabinho and Wilnajdum................... I did, you moved to

2. Midfielders shud have the highest passes in a team like Man city ( just this season, that is still yet to end)............. i prove you wrong with Man city best passers from the past 2 seasons and current best passers in EPL...................... you jump to

3. You dnt need top midfielders to be a possesion team,...

Mention just 1 possesion based team with shitty midfielders and i will mention 5 different possesion teams with shitty defenders

Hehe, I am not a bush god, you already told me what I need to hear. See my initial post below:

nitrogen:
Wait, dont you know that you can easily have lots of possession in games with less involvement of the midfield? Your defenders can always pass the ball around for several minutes before releasing it to the midfield or even the attackers. See the picture below for Liverpool players with their number of passes this season.

Meanwhile, can you show us 19/20 statistics for each midfielder at Liverpool (Wijnaldum vs Henderson vs Fabinho)?

You cant have a possession based team without good midfielders,.... go check out the midfield of Arsenal then, Barcelona and Man city....

I just proved to you that Liverpool's midfield is the weakest of the three departments.

1. Liverpool play is different from Barcelona, Arsenal and Man city possession game,.......Theirs is coupled with intense HIGH - PRESSING

2. Defenders can have the highest pass in the team in a Possession team,.... because opponent sit deeper, giving defenders chance to pass the ball around, without any real pressure from opponent....... there are some games, Ederson (Man city goalkeeper) do have more touches than opponent players.

3. Maybe you should mention a team that played possession game, with shitty midfielders.......

This same season,... 5 defenders are in top 6 highest passers in EPL
You are confusing yourself, the thing is this, if an opponent sits deep, then it gives your midfielders the chance to be more involved. Reason Barca and City midfielders pass the ball around a lot (and not just the defenders).

Klopp has always tried to bypass the midfield. What happens most times is that the defenders have more touches than midfielders because he thinks they are just there to help with ball recovery, they are not technical enough for the type of possession football that Barca and City plays.

Anyway, you are back to my point that you can have high possession by having your defenders do a lot on the ball. And to your last point, there are few technical midfielders in the EPL, also, the style is quite different, dont be suprised if you see midfielders dominate the list of passes in other leagues.

Maybe you will understand with a full complete season, when Man city are playing at the top of their game.

Defenders had the highest pass for them in 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons
Do you want to start turning Amala like Dayo niii? Why did you post top 5 for a year and top 6 for another? Also, 2017/2018 season says something different. Otamendi was number one, the next three were midfielders.

Anyway, my point is, you can still have high possession with shitty midfielders, just get your defenders to do most of the passing, crossing, and providing assists to attackers. That is exactly what Liverpool has been doing in the last 2 years. Check their 2018-2019 stats.

Maybe you still dont get my point. See City's stats below. The midfielders lead in terms of number of passes, how come it's not the same for Liverpool?

When Wenger was still managing Arsenal, the midfielders led in terms of number of passes. I believe that most possession-based teams have good midfielders that makes a lot of passes in games. Liverpool's is different. One might be tempted to say that number games played matters, but I would say that you should consider total number of passes by each department (defence vs midfield)

Essentially, depending on the style, you can have high possession by having your defenders hold the ball and pass around for a long time.

There's nothing special in Matip making 100 clearances, that is what he was trained to do too.

Even when they typed it in simple English sentence, you are still sticking to your foolish opinion about VVD against Spurs that night.

Just like someone asked, did you actually watch that final? Even if you didn't, are you blind to see the report of Son's scoring chance, that VVD smothered?
You guys should really give up at this point. If you cannot tell us how and why VVD is better than Matip and/or Gomez, then don't even do any comparison with Kompany, Terry, Fagbo and Vidic. VVD never reach their level at all.

The defenders listed above won aerial balls, made clearances and made several last minute tackles in games to ensure their teams conceded less goals. My question is, would they have done all those by running away from attackers?

The only thing VVD did in the final against Spurs was to smother Son's scoring chance, and because of that, you think he was the best defender that night?
