funmies: I'm also in a career dilemma. I have an offer with a bank and also have scholarship for Msc in petroleum engineering. I studied chemical engineering and I'm a lady. After Msc I would still be looking for how to secure a good job most likely in the oil and gas. But if I am in bank, I know I am working and gathering experience but would be looking for how to enter the oil and gas cos I have seen similar cases. But also looking at maybe I should do my Msc once and forget it. Pls I need good advice urgently.

Elai147: If a primary dealer buys in bulk from the primary market and sell to you at a lower rate, it is still a secondary market transaction.
Okay, I get you now, right, any arrangement outside the primary market can be termed a secondary market transaction.

What I am just saying is this, there is an OTC market (maybe main secondary market) where rates of bills changes daily, just like stocks, e.g a 91 day bill you bought last week at 9.95%, may have changed to 10.10%, of course, the tenor would have changed to maybe 85 days. Now one can buy that bill at 10.10%, but it isn't accessible by individuals. Arrangements are very much different from what I am saying.

Basically, there is a market where the rates of bills changes daily, and also where big institutions, bills traders, pension fund guys etc buy and sell bills daily. You see that itrade platform, something like that exists for bills trading too.

Dexterax: My oga, I think you underestimate the risks to our dear economy, which I'd assume the foreign investors won't overlook.

A major one is exchange rate risk. On the upside, exchange rate risks contributed substantially to Nestlé Nigeria's reported earnings for FY 2012. Imagine what's possible on the downside.

The growth rate of a country (which, for starters, is a complex population statistically) is too simplistic a metric to be used to determine whether money should go there or not really. A lot of investors are still reeling from their Chinese adventures...
Strike that off. exchange rate fluctuations have been managed well. Nothing to be worried about.

Baba, hotel rates in Nigeria are high, why are intercontinental hotels and others in Naija, they will charge us well, though costly to operate, but they will make money, infrastructures are seriously needed in Naija, these guys are coming, from Asia, America, even Europe, they want to feel us, US neglected Africa before, but when they discovered that they were lacking behind, they developed plans to invest in Power and infrastructures in Naija, transcorp wants to list its hotel business on the NSE, after Tony will ensure that their power business is listed, other firms will be listed, ETFs will increase, stanbic just started one, more REITS on the exchange, all these will take place in the next two years......... forget bros, Africa is the next place to invest your cash.

Dexterax: In spite of the new 2000 point high of the S&P 500?

I guess you're referring to fixed income my oga. There's no doubt that the interest rate differentials favour African markets and Nigeria in particular. But as our country continues to earn most of her debt-service revenue from crude oil sales where commodity prices are printing downwards in the near term, an international investor would even worry about our country's solvency abilities.
Oga mi, true, it will, but Africa should enjoy the effect of ECB rate cut the most, statistics will enhance this, do you think they will worry about our country's solvency abilities? no sir, we are healthy, maybe that of Ghana. Most of our banks are trading on the NSE at a discount to their counterparts abroad, there are opportunities in Nigeria, reforms are there to lift the NSE, they will attract investors, Qatar National Bank just bought a certain percentage of ETI's shares, watch out for the best. Just got informed that some other offshore investors will follow suit.

Though, election is on the way, but that shouldn't affect inflows, at worse, the inflows will go to South Africa, Kenya and others, but a spiral effect is expected.

Dexterax: True sir.
But it's unlikely it'll spur significant inflows to sub-saharan markets generally due to the improving economic conditions in the US and the UK. Speculative capital will more likely be deployed in these improving developed markets than shaky African markets going through a thousand and one transitions.
You need to consider the fact that you will get lower returns in the US, the fact is this HFs, PEs and AM firms will fly to Africa to make good money, more risk, more return.
Investment › Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by nitrogen(m): 10:27am On Sep 05, 2014
^^^^^ Maybe....but I think it is about buying private assets first, which is not really QE, when you buy traditional assets, particularly short and long term bonds, that is conventional QE.

ECB is still trying to adopt conventional monetary policies at the moment.

Anyway, all join, it will have a very big impact on emerging markets, the fact is this, one or two rounds of QE wont help, check out US, they did it twice before there was improvement in their economy, that was responsible for the major bullish trends in emerging economies in 2012 and 2013.

Make we dey watch.

taiwolusol: The most competitive jobs in the Market require Masters degree holder for entry level positions. Take it from me, a M.sc is an added advantage, it gives you more room to develop yourself, it gets you more prepared. No doubt you'll still have to compete with B.sc holders for most jobs.
You just have to agreee with me that on an average, an M.Sc graduate will beat a B.Sc graduate everytime.... The kill is having the M.sc in say USA, UK, Canada and the likes...
Who told you that the most competitive jobs require masters? please don't be a victim of ignorance.

I guess you have or will soon add masters to your collection, so its all consolation things.

@bolded, you are funny with that your assertion, wrong!

GUYS GO AND GET UR MASTERS.....
Hey buddy, it is the truth, masters won't give you an edge, if you graduated with a 2.2, fine, your 2.2 and masters might land you test invites and interviews, aside that, your masters is a waste.

Mpeace: I also buy from the secoondary market with far lesser fund. The minimum is 100k and you can actually buy on any working day of the week, that is why I like it. I use diamond bank.
For where? It's your bank that is pulling all these stunts. Trust me, I know what I am saying, naija financial market (fixed income and equities) is part of my terrain so to speak.

angelo82: I am very sure…Infact I bought one in august from a different bank which will mature by Feb……You can buy from some banks at anytime not necessarily if there is auction or not. When it was 12% for 180days at the auction,I bought from bank at 11.2%…..But this very bank only buy through CBN auction and by Gods grace,I will move my fund by march next year to one of my other banks because after the election I may opt for something better….
Yes, this just confirmed my assertion, you don't buy from the secondary market, that one you are doing is just an arrangement/scheme by the bank.

We have two markets for treasury bills, primary and secondary, secondary is OTC (over the counter), so it means you can trade all tradable bills daily, just like the stock exchange market, but this time, it is done over the counter, and the minimum volume traded is 250m. Most times, individuals can't access it, banks, PFAs, and discount houses do.

Yours is just an arrangement between you and your bank. They get the bills and sell at a lower rate to you.

angelo82: I see….For some years I have been buying from the secondary market but since the secondary market rate is below 10%,then I had to bid in the primary market….I really have to find a solution to my funds…….Thanks.
You sure about the bolded? I think it is your bank that always give you a certain rate, with you thinking that it is the secondary market you are buying from, the minimum volume required for secondary market purchase or sale is 250m. Well, maybe your fund is close to or well over 250m, and if that is the case, then you have been accessing the secondary market truly.

By the way, the last time I checked, you can get 10.60 or so for a mid-tenor bill in the secondary market, also, there are Omo bills at 10.75/10.80.

It all depends on your advisor sha.

You will get 10.00%.

angelo82: I have never bought from the primary market but recently I had to and my last bid failed so I bid lower. My question is if my bid is lower to the successful bid,am I going to get the rate of the successful bid?
Multiple bids auction system, you will get your bid rate, just ensure that your bid rate is lower than or equal to the stop rate, if it was a bond auction, then the stop rate would be for everybody, as in all winners would be allotted at the same rate (stop rate).

Investment › Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by nitrogen(m):
Hi, considering the fact that liquidity is a bit high in the system, and also, the fact that CRR is coming in tomorrow, rates will be a bit lower or at best close at the last auction's level(s), the CBN will issue 182b across all the maturities (91, 182 and 364 day bills), which is not much, so it won't make rates go higher. Most times, when liquidity is low and the bills on issue are much, then they must raise the rates in other to accomodate/or meet their target.

Expect maybe 9.50-9.80, 10.00-10.18 and 10.05-10.25 for 91, 182 and 364 day bills respectively. I won't be specific about the stop rates, but those are the ranges expected.

Happy bidding!

Meanwhile, don't quote me!
