Grammy 2026: I thought Davido didn’t like me – Omah Lay
Afrobeats singer Omah Lay said he initially assumed Davido didn’t like him.
But the assumption was later proven wrong, paving the way for their Grammy-nominated collaboration “With You”.
According to him, he saw a clip of Davido reacting positively to his music, which changed his perception.
The singer made the revelation in a GRAMMY red carpet interview with OkayAfrica, shared by HYPETRIBE on Monday, stating that the assumption was quickly dispelled, and they connected, leading to their collaboration.
“I was in the house, really, and I was going through it when I saw it, and I lost my mind.
“It was the fact that I didn’t know Davido was like that. I thought we had a beef. I thought he didn’t like me.
“It was funny, and we connected so well after that. Boom—magic happened,” he said.
Omah Lay described their work together as effortless and organic.
Omah Lay was optimistic about his chances at the Grammys, but also acknowledged the strong Nigerian presence in the Best African Music Performance category. “Me and Davido, of course,” he said when asked who he expects to win. “But Burna is there, Ayra is there, Wizkid is there. Any of us—I mean, we are repping Nigeria.”
Despite being nominated alongside other Nigerian stars, the Best African Music Performance award went to South Africa’s Tyla for “Push 2 Start”.
Social media erupted with outrage from Nigerian music fans after Afrobeats superstar Davido lost the Best African Music Performance award at the 68th Grammy Awards to South African singer Tyla, whose hit single Push 2 Start claimed the prestigious accolade.
The defeat marks the second consecutive year Davido has been outshone by Tyla at the Grammys, despite his high-profile campaign and relentless efforts to secure the award.
Many Nigerians expressed disappointment over what they perceive as a snub. Twitter user @_AsiwajuLerry slammed the Recording Academy, saying: “Grammy has robbed Davido for Tyla again. That award show has officially lost its credibility in front of Nigerians. Never again…”
Cubana Chiefpriest offered words of encouragement to the singer, tweeting: “Oyibo dey do everything possible to break a strong man so he can do their demonic sht with them but he will never do it. Heads up brother, open the bag & drop another hot one for us. E no dey finish, gbedu na Water…”
Other netizens highlighted Davido’s tireless efforts to win the award. @itzbasito wrote: “Nothing Davido didn’t do to win a Grammy, he joined the Recording Academy, attended all the parties, got there early, arranged chairs, invited all his friends and family, even called Paso to perform, and still lost to Tyla.”
Even fellow Nigerian artists weighed in on the debate. @Olamide0fficial urged calm, adding: “I know emotions are high but what we will not do is act like Tyla’s ‘Push 2 Start’ is not also a big song. Everyone in that Grammy category deserved it but the best won.”
@Khanstillday voiced the sentiment of many fans: “They gave it to Tyla AGAIN… for ‘Push 2 Start.’ She wasn’t even there to collect it lol. Davido & Omah Lay’s ‘With You’ is a better song and everyone knows it! Davido deserves his flowers, man has worked so hard! Nepotism over rewarding hard work and talent. DAVIDO WAS ROBBED!!”

Onyeka Onwenu MFR (31 January 1952 – 30 July 2024) was a Nigerian singer-songwriter, actress, human rights and social activist, journalist, politician, and X Factor series judge.
Dubbed the "Elegant Stallion" due to her significant impact on African culture and entertainment, Onwenu was a chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.
In 2013, she was appointed the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
Personal life
She fell in love for the first time at age 13 in 1965. Onwenu notably kept her personal life private and often refused to disclose private information regarding her ex-husband, a Yoruba Muslim. She was the mother of two children: Tijani Charles and Abraham.
Death
On 30 July 2024, Onwenu passed out after performing at the 80th birthday party of The CEO Emzor Pharmaceuticals Stella Okoli in Lagos State. She was immediately taken to Reddington Hospital where she was confirmed dead.
Onwenu was 72. Prior to her death, Onwenu wrote in an opinion piece on Premium Times in 2021 on how she would like to be buried: “Do it quickly, quietly and privately,” emphasising that her burial should be devoid of unnecessary fanfare. "

The Inspector General of Police has re-arraigned Nollywood actress Angela Okorie before the Federal High Court, Abuja, on a 7-count amended charge of cyberstalking.
During the court proceedings, Ms Okorie pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecution prayed the court for a short adjournment to enable them to open their case.
Counsel to the defendant did not oppose the prosecution’s submission, informing the court of a bail application for the defendant.
He prayed the court to exercise its discretion in favor of Angela Okorie.
The prosecution opposed the bail application because the defendant jumped the administrative bail she was granted by the police.
The prosecution argued that sureties were nowhere to be found, and the defendant was re-arrested to be brought to court.
The alleged offences against the defendant carry sentences of 3 to 5 years
Replying to points of law, counsel to the defendant noted that she did not jump bail, but went for a medical check-up, which she communicated to the police.
Ruling on the application for bail, Justice Emeka Nwite held that Bail was granted in the sum of N5million and one surety in like sum.
The surety must be a level thirteen civil servant whose residence within the jurisdiction of the court will be verified.

Actress Angela Okorie has been remanded in Suleja Correctional Centre after her arraignment before Justice Emeka Nwite at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where she faced three counts of alleged criminal defamation and cyberstalking linked to online posts about colleague Mercy Johnson‑Okojie.
Angela who pleaded not guilty, arrived in court with her legal team, but her attempt at securing immediate freedom stalled when the judge declined to rule on her oral bail application, opting instead to reserve the matter for a later date.
The court ordered that she be kept in custody until the adjourned date, when her bail request will be formally argued and considered.
The charges, filed under the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, accuse her of conspiring with another individual said to be at large to publish defamatory content, including harsh descriptions of Mercy Johnson on social media.

Police Arrest Actress Angela Okorie Over Alleged Cybercr+me Case Involving Mercy Johnson
Actress Angela Okorie was arrested at her Lagos residence by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Cybercrime Centre.
She was reportedly held overnight at Yaba Panti after there was no immediate flight available to Abuja at the time of her arrest.
Angela Okorie was flown to Abuja early this morning, where she is expected to face court proceedings connected to a cybercrime case involving Mercy Johnson.
Recall that Ms Okorie has over the years called out Mercy Johnson, even accusing her of being a witch.
Recently, Mercy Johnson had in a video made to address the arrest and release of a lady who defamed her, revealed that some parents of her children's classmates tell them not to touch her kids' bags in school because their mom (Mercy) is a witch. Imagine.
