Education › FG Stops Honorary Degree Holders From Using ‘Dr’ Title by nlfpmod(mod): 2:02pm On May 06 |
The Federal Government has barred recipients of honorary degrees from adding “Dr” to their names.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced this at a media briefing at Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.
He said the decision was taken at the Federal Executive Council meeting, which held on April 30.
Alausa said the move was aimed at ending decades of indiscriminate conferment of degrees for political patronage and financial gain.
“The recent trend we’ve seen with the award of honorary degrees has revealed a growing abuse and politicisation of this academic privilege. We’ve seen awards being used for political patronage, for financial gain, as well as the conferral of awards on serving public officials, which, as part of the ethics of honorary degree awards, should not happen.”
He said universities that violate the FEC decision will face sanctions, adding that the Vice Chancellors had been directed to streamline the process.
He added that going forward, universities will have to seek approval from the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) before they can award the degrees. Previous thread https://www.nairaland.com/8645794/nuc-bars-honorary-degree-holders

Kled Bans Nigeria: 95% Fraud Rate Forces AI Data Startup to Pull iOS App We have removed Kled from the Nigerian app store and IP banned the entire region.
The first thing I would like to say is I have nothing against Nigeria. I have a ton of friends from this region and these were some of our earliest app adopters. Genuinely, thank you all for the support.
Kled has been up and running and out of beta for 4 months now. We have paid out hundreds of thousands of people for their data, and our users have uploaded over 1 billion assets onto our platform.
After several months of uploads we found that Nigeria had a ≈95% fraud rate. Instead of real, usable data, users were uploading pictures of black screens, duplicate photos, internet generated images, AI generated images, etc. at an unimaginable scale.
In comparison, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines have a less than 10% fraud rate across 10x the userbase size.
Our fraud system is fast to catch these issues but the level of complexity of these schemes is getting out of hand.
This weekend we were flooded with thousands of fake Japanese passports and identity cards with Nigerians photoshopped onto them in our KYC system. That was the final straw.
As a startup we can't afford to eat the costs of that data overhead, so we temporarily removed the app from the region while we improved our fraud detection and banning system to quickly filter out bad actors when the time is right.
On top of all of this, every time we make a post there is someone asking us to bring the region back within seconds. We hear you, but it's gotten out of hand.
We've made this decision with great care. We love everyone who has genuinely supported Kled from Nigeria, and we hope to return when the time is right.

Crime › Soldier Beats Olalekan Fakoyejo, Thecable Journalist, In Lagos by nlfpmod(mod): 6:46pm On May 04 |
A soldier assaulted Olalekan Fakoyejo, assistant business editor with TheCable, over a remark on traffic obstruction around Ikeja in Lagos state.
The incident occurred on Saturday, May 2, as Fakoyejo made his way to Ogba from Ikeja inside a tricycle popularly known as ‘Keke Napep’.
Some soldiers were seen directing traffic when the tricycle conveying the journalist snaked before Pleasant Event Centre, off Ajao road, Ikeja.
A soldier then asked another rider to pull over and get aboard his tricycle as punishment — a development that further snarled traffic for awhile.
The tricycle conveying Fakoyejo was caught up in the ensuing gridlock.
Displeased, Fakoyejo told other passengers that the soldier was responsible for the standstill.
A dark-complexioned soldier overheard Fakoyejo and ordered the journalist and other passengers to disembark.
The soldier dragged Fakoyejo off the tricycle and demanded to know what gave him the effrontery to speak in the manner he did.
The journalist told the soldier that he did nothing wrong by speaking out.
The official grew irate and asked Fakoyejo to report himself to his colleagues who were not close to the scene of the incident.
As Fakoyejo made to explain what happened to the soldier’s colleague who was approaching, the officer who caused the bedlam dished a slap on the editor.
A video, filmed by an eyewitness, showed the soldier repeatedly shoving the journalist while attempting to hit him with a cudgel picked from the floor.
As the soldier pushed Fakoyejo, the journalist’s phone hit the tarmac, with the screen shattering to bits in the process.
Some passersby thereafter pleaded with Fakoyejo to leave the scene to avoid being beaten to a pulp or slain by the operative.
As the journalist walked off, two soldiers accosted him, threatening to whip him into line one more time as the motley crowd pleaded and sought to defuse tension.
The incident occurred just days after a soldier’s bullet cut short the life of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja. https://www.thecable.ng/soldier-assaults-thecable-journalist-in-lagos/

Celebrities › Sisi Alagbo Mistakenly Leaked Our Sex Tape - Husband, Akeem Adesola by nlfpmod(mod): 1:38pm On May 03 |
Celebrity Herbal Vendor Sisi Alagbo’s Husband Denies Leaking Gbenshing Tape, Says It Was Sisi Alagbo That Mistakenly Did It.
The brouhaha trailing celebrity herbal vendor sisi Alagbo's leaking gbenshing video took another turn when the husband who was accused of being the one who mistakenly leaked the tape, came out to explain that it was sisi alagbo herself that mistakenly leaked the tape while trying to navigate Facebook.
He swears that he had no hand in the tape's leak and explained that sis alagbo accidentally sent the video to a Facebook channel, and before she could delete it, a woman identified as Mercy Akinbanjo had already saved the clip.
He said Mercy immediately reached out to them, demanding money or she would release the tape. He swore “If I was the one that deliberately leaked our tape, may God punish and kill me” “My wife mistakenly sent it, and before she could delete it, Mercy had saved it.”
The couple said they were advised not to pay, because blackmailers never stop once they get money.
They reported the matter to the police, and Mercy was arrested and during interrogation, she allegedly confessed that she had already forwarded the video to someone else before her arrest.
Sisi Alagbo's husband who is now allegedly overwhelmed and embarrassed is pleading with Nigerians:
“Please help us. We didn’t leak anything. It was a mistake, and now the video is everywhere.”
Huh!!!...I thought that she said that he leaked it? And now he is saying that she did it? Then it is also possible that they orchestrated the leak to trend and get more attention. https://www.instagram.com/p/DX3cgN5jAhi/?igsh=bXUzMzgwYTJxZGtq

Family › Meet Michelle & Lavinia Osbourne Twins Who Have Different Fathers by nlfpmod(mod): 11:14pm On May 02*. Modified: 1:50pm On May 03 |
These twins were born within minutes of each other - but have different dads
Twins Michelle and Lavinia Osbourne have always shared a special connection.
But when Lavinia clicked on an email with results of an at-home DNA test in September 2022, she was filled with a sense of dread.
"Maybe subconsciously I knew," she says.
Her test results revealed something astonishing: non-identical twins Lavinia and Michelle don't have the same father.
They were conceived naturally, grown together in the same womb, and born to the same mother within minutes of each other - but they are half-sisters.
Michelle and Lavinia, 49, exist because of an incredibly rare biological process called heteropaternal superfecundation. For it to happen, a woman must produce more than one egg during the same cycle, the eggs must be successfully fertilised by sperm from different men, and the resulting embryos must survive the pregnancy.
Only around 20 cases have ever been identified worldwide. After months of researching their story for the BBC Radio 4 series, The Gift, I've found that Lavinia and Michelle are the only set of twins with different fathers ever to be documented in the UK.
For Lavinia, the revelation was devastating. She and Michelle had shared a difficult childhood where they were passed around between homes and carers. The only stability the non-identical twins had was each other.
"She was the one thing that belonged to me, the one thing that I was certain about, the one thing that I was sure of," Lavinia says. "And then she wasn't."
But when Lavinia rang her twin to share the news, Michelle felt differently.
"I wasn't surprised," Michelle says. "I'm still in amazement that this can actually happen – it's super weird, super odd, super rare – but it makes sense."
Michelle and Lavinia's mother was a vulnerable 19-year-old when she gave birth to them in Nottingham in 1976.
"She had suffered abuse at the hands of [her] stepfather," Michelle says. "My mother was in and out of foster care and children's homes throughout her childhood."
Whenever the twin sisters asked who their dad was, their mum always said he was someone called James. "He wasn't in our life," Michelle continues.
Their mother was absent for much of their lives, too. When they were five years old, she got a place to study at university in London, and left her children behind in Nottingham with her best friend's mother, who the twins called "grandma".
"Grandma was strict – not very emotional, not very cuddly. The one constant I had was Michelle," Lavinia says.
As long as she had her twin, Michelle says, she felt safe.
"It was her and I against the world."
Aged 10, the girls joined their mother in London. But within a few years, Lavinia and Michelle were sent away again, to live in one of their mother's old foster homes. They couldn't understand why their mum wanted to maintain a distance from them.
"Physically and emotionally, she was always out of reach," says Lavinia.
After being absent for most of their childhood, James came back into their lives when the twins were in their mid-teens. Lavinia managed to track him down - and while she thought she recognised herself in him, Michelle never felt sure he was her dad. Deep down, there were niggling doubts.
By late 2021, their mother had early-onset dementia, and was no longer able to answer their questions. Michelle saw a photograph of James, and became more convinced than ever that he couldn't be her father.
"I just thought, you don't even look anything like me," Michelle says. "So I bought myself a kit."
If you take a DNA test, you reveal truths about your family as well as yourself. But Michelle wasn't thinking of how her results might affect Lavinia when she sent her sample off to be analysed. The results arrived on 14 February 2022 - the same day Michelle and Lavinia's mother died.
James's last name didn't feature in Michelle's paternal line - he wasn't her father.
After weeks of investigation, Michelle discovered that her father was Alex, the brother of a woman who had been friends with their mother. Michelle contacted some of Alex's family, who warned her he had struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction for years, and was living on the streets.
Michelle and Lavinia met up with a woman called Olivine, who Michelle believed was a new first cousin to both her and her twin. Michelle felt an instant connection.
"I just knew she was blood," she says. But Lavinia didn't feel the same. And when Olivine took out photographs of her family, Lavinia didn't see herself in their faces.
Lavinia decided to also do a DNA test. She didn't expect to get a different result to Michelle, but she had to do something about her growing feelings of unease that Alex's family was not her own.
"I just wanted confirmation," she says.
When she opened her results and saw the mind-boggling truth that her twin was her half sister, Lavinia was distraught - and furious.
"I was angry with Michelle for having me go through this, because I just didn't want this reality."
And there were more revelations to come. When Lavinia looked closely at her results, she saw that James wasn't her father either.
Lavinia had no interest in finding out who her dad was, but Michelle was determined to get answers. Combing through her twin's results, Michelle found Arthur, Lavinia's biological father. The twins drove to meet him at his home in West London.
"He was a little bit nervous, but he's got an exuberant character - like me," says Lavinia. At the end of their meeting, she kissed Arthur on the cheek.
"I just felt compelled, drawn to do it."
Lavinia and Arthur have been close ever since, seeing each other several times a month, often alongside Michelle.
"I feel like I've found a place to belong, and that place is with my dad," Lavinia says. He has told Michelle that she, too, can call him Dad.
At a later meeting, the twins asked Arthur what he knew about how they came to be conceived.
"He said, 'Your mother knocked on my door. She was very upset. She was crying'," Michelle says. "She went to him because she wasn't safe, and she was in shock."
Michelle and Lavinia's mother is not here to tell us exactly what happened, but Arthur says she turned to him in a time of need.
Michelle was also able to meet her own biological father, Alex, through other newly discovered family members.
"He was clearly under the influence of drugs," Michelle says.
The resemblance between them was undeniable.
"He's mine, I'm his, but I didn't feel like he's someone I need to take forward in my future with me," she says.
"I just needed to know."
The twins will never know whether their mother suspected they had different fathers.
"It must have driven her crazy," says Lavinia. "She must have seen something, felt something."
"I think in the back of Mummy's head, she knew, but she was in great denial," Michelle says.
As non-identical twins, Lavinia and Michelle have always been aware of their differences. The truths revealed in their DNA made those differences seem even more stark, at first. But they will always share a unique bond.
"We're miracles," Lavinia says. "We're always going to have a closeness that can't be broken."
"She's my twin sister," Michelle nods. "Nothing takes away from that." https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cx21k6rzpdpo

Travel › Spirit Airlines Shuts Down by nlfpmod(mod): 2:00pm On May 02 |
The budget airline was in talks with the US government about a rescue deal which would have saved it from collapse.
But discussions collapsed and the carrier said in an announcement on its website on Saturday that with "great disappointment" the airline had "started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately".
Spirit was emerging from its second bankruptcy filing in recent years before the US-Israel war in Iran, but the resulting surge in jet fuel costs pushed it over the brink.
All upcoming flights with Spirit have been cancelled.
In Saturday's statement, the airline said it would automatically process refunds for any flights purchased through Spirit with a credit or debit card to the original form of payment.
Guests who booked flights via a travel agent should contact the travel agent directly to request a refund.
Compensation for those who booked flights using a voucher, credit, airline points or any other method will be determined at a later date through the bankruptcy court process.
The airline said it was unfortunately not able to reimburse guests for other related costs such as emergency hotel stays or replacement flights associated with cancelled trips.
Spirit's customer service is no longer available, the airline said early on Saturday, but customers with questions can contact the carrier's claims agent.
Fuel costs can make up as much as 40% of an airline's outgoings, and airlines have seen the cost of jet fuel double since the US and Israeli strikes began at the end of February.
Savanthi Syth, airlines analyst at the investment bank Raymond James, said spiralling jet fuel costs in the wake of the Iran war had proved "the final nail in the coffin" for Spirit.
Speaking to the BBC, Syth said the operator had shied away from the radical overhaul it needed during a 2024 bankruptcy procedure.
Spirit had been in the process of making the changes it needed in its current bankruptcy process, scaling back the number of flights it was offering and aircraft it owned, she said.
But its ability to survive the year was in question even before the Iran war, Syth added.
"If it wasn't for the fuel scenario, they would have been okay through the summer, beyond the summer I would have said it was still precarious."
Some have been cutting flights and others have hiked fares to cope with the cost increases. At the same time, the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned Europe could run out of jet fuel in as little as six weeks.
At the end of April, Spirit had been confident its rescue deal with the Trump administration was to be finalised imminently.
But after that deal fell through, Trump on Friday told BBC partner CBS the airline had been offered "a final proposal" to keep it in business.
The earlier plan, which would have seen the US government take effective ownership of as much as 90% of the airline, faced stiff opposition from Wall Street, Capitol Hill and even a member of Trump's own cabinet. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told Reuters a rescue would amount to tossing "good money after bad". https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cqxlnrqjvzyo

Sudden Shutdown of the Egbin Power Station BRACE UP : DARKNESS LOOMS IN LAGOS
A prolonged blackout may be imminent in Lagos State following a sudden shutdown of the Egbin Power Station and a simultaneous transmission line outage.
Egbin Power Station suffered a major operational disturbance, leading to a complete loss of generation.
This has lead to a significant reduction in power generation currently affecting electricity supply across the country, particularly within the Lagos region.
Egbin Power Station, which is the largest electricity-generating plant on the national grid and a major contributor to daily power supply in Nigeria, experienced a major operational disturbance.
At approximately 8:21 p.m. on April 28, 2026, Egbin Power Station recorded a total loss of generation, dropping from about 641MW to zero output.
This incident was caused by the failure of the plant’s central compressor, in addition to a malfunction of the circulating water pump system, which necessitated an immediate shutdown of all generating units to safeguard the facility.”
The impact of the generation loss was compounded by a transmission constraint affecting power delivery into Lagos.
Power supply to the Lagos region is currently further restricted due to the forced outage of the Osogbo–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line, thereby limiting the evacuation of available generation into the Lagos load centre. Source
