Fashion / 4 Simple Ways To Show Your Hairstylist You Care by NNFems: 9:55am On Mar 05, 2017
Has anyone ever caught you off guard with an act of kindness?
Brought you a gift for no reason?

Mailed you a card just to say what a wonderful job you do?
Sharing kindness and saying “thank you” can be a lost art in today’s business world.
So, how can you show your hairstylist you care? Try one of these simple ways to spread your love and appreciation:

1. Surprise her with a gift for no reason.
Has someone ever bought you a gift for no reason?
No birthday or major holiday – just a gift to remind you that you’re special and important. It’s a pretty awesome feeling when someone goes out of their way to make you special, isn’t it?
If I am heading into a hair appointment during the morning or lunch hours, I will always text my stylist to see if she wants a coffee or sandwich.

2. Give your stylist a recommendation. Love your stylist? tell everyone about her special talents.
Send your friends and family members their way when they complement you on your new hair color or cut

3. Send her something special on her birthday or a holiday. Remembering your hair stylist's birthday will make them feel extra special!

4. Come back to the salon. While this might seem obvious, one of the best ways to show you care is to schedule regular appointments.
“I find that the best thing a client can do to remind me that they enjoy me working with them and the work that I do is by returning to me consistently," said Ashley Mitchell, a hairstylist from Garrett, IN.

So, how do you show your hairstylist that you care? Comment below

Fashion / Back In Time! African Threading by NNFems: 11:19am On Mar 02, 2017
African threading is what we commonly refer to as Owu or Kiko or “doing thread”. Back then, it was our Mother’s favorite hairstyle for us because it has a low maintenance, it last longer and improves the hair length.

Today, African threading is mentioned and revered when discussing African culture and now women troop to the salons to get their natural hair threaded. We can even say the modern hairstyle Faux Locs or False Locs (which is done by wrapping hair with extensions or wool) is a variation of African threading.

In more ways than one, kiko or owu is one memory (whether good or bad), we all reminisce on with smiles and laughter!
Share with us: what was your experience like with African threading?

Fashion / How To Achieve A Top Bun Look Like Rihanna by NNFems: 9:36am On Mar 01, 2017
This look –top bun- is very easy and is perfect for the office, a date-night or a hangout with the girls. You can never go wrong with it whether messy or not. It is also a quick hairstyle if you’re in a rush and very low maintenance too.
Here’s how to achieve this beautiful look:

1. You hair should be straightened or stretched to give a sleek look. Get all the tools you need ready. You would need a rubber band or elastic hair holder, a wide toothed comb and bobbly pins.

2. Make sure your hair is well oiled with your favorite Apple hair oil moisturizer. Comb your hair with the wide toothed comb to detangle hair of any knots or clumps.*You can (optional) section off a front part to create fringe (either side or full). This you can straighten or tong out to give a wavy or curly look.*

3. Bring all of your hair together to the top of your head and secure the whole of your hair with a rubber or elastic hair holder. This will form a ponytail. Ensure it is firm but not too tight. If tight, pull on tight areas till you feel some relief.

4. Spin the ponytail into a single strip and wrap it around the rubber band, tuck in the remaining hair under the rubber band and pin it with a bobby pin. Tuck in any fly-aways under the elastic band.

5. Now you have a top bun, pinch the bun lightly to make it fuller and puffier as desired.

6. For your hairline and baby hair, you can apply Apple Styling Gel lightly and brush into the rest of your hair. This will give you a sleek and finished look.

Now you’re ready to slay your day!

Fashion / How To Keep Your Child’s Hair Long And Healthy Weekly. by NNFems: 11:30am On Feb 28, 2017
As kids we all know wash day and salon appointments were the worst days of the week for many of us. We sure do not want our kids to go through the same harrowing experience we had.

So how do you care for your daughter’s hair while helping her love getting her hair done. Here are 6 tips to getting that done:

1. When taking down your child’s old hairstyle, be gentle while loosening the weave or braid. Make sure to detangle gently as you go, if the hair is tangled, do not tug on it with your comb, use your fingers to loosen knots and after loosening, section her hair into four parts and braid or twist each one. This will prevent her hair from tangling. If you must comb, use a wide toothed comb, this will reduce breakage and tugging.

2. You can shampoo her hair once a week or once in two weeks. Shampoo is necessary because it cleanses the hair of build-up caused by hair products used in styling and keeps the hair clean and ready for the next style. Therefore when shampooing her hair, be gentle again, use the pads of your fingernails (do not use your fingernails so as not to scratch her scalp). Make sure all the shampoo is rinsed off with warm water. Use cool water for a final rinse.

3. Conditioning your child’s hair is very important because conditioner restores the nutrients and moisture, the shampoo has stripped off the hair and restores its original shine. Therefore after applying conditioner to all for sections of hair, cover her with a shower cap, leave it in her hair for 15-25 mins. Then comb to detangle and rinse off completely.

4. Next, her hair needs the right kind oil based hair products to help her hair grow beautifully. So apply a moisturizer to maintain moisture and nourishment and then seal with her favorite oil based hair product like Apple hair food or Ozone Bergamot Hair Groom and Conditioner. Maintain the 4 part sectioning.

5. Finally the styling is the most interesting part. Keep her engaged with a storybook or phone games or a movie, this will keep her still, quiet, and engaged. Be realistic about choosing a style. Make sure to show her pictures of the hairstyle you plan on doing for her, make sure it is a pretty hairstyle, you can also let her pick a hairstyle she likes, ensure the hairstyle works for hair. Do not braid the hair too tight to her scalp, ask frequently if it hurts and adjust if she complains of any pain. Reduce the use of extensions and heavy beads especially if her hair isn’t so full.

Do not pull on her hairline too tightly. Make sure you don’t do the same hairstyle twice in a row, be creative with her hairstyles.
Do not forget to keep reminding her how beautiful she is before and after her hair is styled. Never complain about how her hair is stubborn. Teach her to love her by teaching yourself how to manage it and teaching her how to as well

Fashion / What To Eat For Healthy Hair by NNFems: 11:37am On Feb 26, 2017
• By Jo Lewin - Associate nutritionist
Just like skin, the condition of your hair is an outward sign of inside health. The cells that make up each strand of hair require a regular supply of key nutrients.
Protein
As hair is made of protein, ensuring you have enough protein in your diet is crucial for making hair strong and healthy. If you are not consuming enough protein in your diet, your hair is likely to become dry, brittle and weak.

Iron
Iron is an especially important mineral for hair and too little iron (anaemia) is a major cause of hair loss. The hair follicle and root are fed by a nutrient rich blood supply. When iron levels (serum ferritin) fall below a certain point, you may experience anaemia. This disrupts the nutrient supply to the follicle, affecting the hair growth cycle and may result in shedding.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C aids the absorption of iron so foods high in vitamin C are good to eat in conjunction with iron-rich foods. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant so is used readily by the body. The best sources are blackcurrants, blueberries, broccoli, guava, kiwi fruits, oranges, papaya, strawberries and sweet potatoes. Vitamin C helps in the production of collagen that strengthens the capillaries that supply the hair shafts.

Omega-3
Omega-3 fatty acids are important fats our body cannot make itself, and therefore must be obtained through our diet. Omega-3s are found in the cells that line the scalp and also provide the oils that keep your scalp and hair hydrated. Look out for oily fish such as salmon, herring, sardines, trout and mackerel and plant sources including avocado, pumpkin seeds and walnuts.

Vitamin A
Vitamin A is needed by the body to make sebum. Sebum is an oily substance created by our hairs sebaceous glands and provides a natural conditioner for a healthy scalp. Without sebum we may experience an itchy scalp and dry hair. Include animal products and orange/yellow coloured vegetables which are high in beta-carotene (which makes vitamin A) such as carrots, pumpkins and sweet potatoes.

Zinc and selenium
Scalp protection involves other important minerals, notably zinc and selenium. A lack of zinc can lead to hair loss and a dry, flaky scalp. Fortified cereals and wholegrains are a good source of zinc along with oysters, beef and eggs.

Vitamin E
The sun can damage our hair just like it can damage our skin so ensure you eat foods rich in vitamin E to provide protection for your hair. Nuts are nutritional powerhouses, providing zinc and selenium as well as vitamin E so try to include them as part of a balanced diet.

Natural treatments
Make your own hair mask for a deep, nourishing treatment every two weeks. Whisk an egg yolk and mix with half a mashed avocado and a spoonful of honey. Massage onto damp, clean hair and leave for 30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

All-Back also referred to as Cornrows

As elaborate and intricately beautiful as many ancient African hairstyles were, The All-back hairstyle was the simplest of them all. Modernly or internationally referred to as cornrows, All-Back entailed weaving the hair close to the scalp in straight lines from the hairline to the back/nape. It is often done in simple straight lines but has evolved into forming creative shapes or lines whilst still maintaining a row.
This hairstyle is a major throwback for some but for many women and even men, it has evolved into modern hairstyles especially the ones involving braiding extensions. It has also been inculcated into Ghanaian weaving styles and looks great when it is braided really long. For men, it is the go-to hairstyle if you have long hair.

Many celebrities home and abroad have used this look many a time and some have created major trends with it. Remember the time Dija stunned us with the double braided all back style, inspiring many ladies to adopt the same style?
In deed the all-back look is perfect for everyone. It has a way of highlighting how beautiful your face looks and complements your made-up face perfectly. You can also lay out your baby hair with some gel to give a finished look!

Fashion / 6 Reasons Your Hair Is Dry And Brittle (part 2) by NNFems: 10:30am On Feb 23, 2017
How to Fix Damage That's Already Been Done

1. Go Thicker in the Winter
“Dry and brittle hair is a common problem year round, but these dry winter months leave many searching for a magic moisturizing solution,” says Vaught. A simple fix: Go heavier on the conditioner. “Just as you may use a heavier face cream, your hair also needs a heavier dose of moisture.

2. Use an Ion Blow Dryer
“Ions dry the hair from the outside, versus a traditional dryer, which dries from within the hair shaft to the outer layer,” says Marin. “This makes a huge impact on the health of your hair and is a huge time saver, as ions dry hair faster.”

3. Straighten Hair When Wet
“One of my favorite quick-conditioning treatments is to use a wet/dry straight iron, says Marin. “Apply argan oil onto damp hair, and run the iron over it for a quick heat conditioning treatment. You will notice a dramatic difference in just one application.”

4. ...Or Skip the Straightener All Together
If hair won’t stay completely straight, go for a different look. “How about using a salt texturized to create a bit of movement instead?” says Vaught.

5. Deep Condition Once a Week
Mark one day on your calendar for a conditioning mask reminder. “Simply wash your hair, put on a deep conditioning mask, wrap your hair in a hot towel for 30 minutes, and voila,” says Vaught. Your hair will be silkier and smoother.

6. Use Sulfate-Free Formulas
These formulas are most commonly recommended for those with color-treated hair because sulfates fade color. However, they also remove moisture. “Make sure to wash and condition hair every time with sulfate-free formulas,” says Marin.

Fashion / How To Make The Most Of Your Weekend by NNFems: 11:56am On Feb 22, 2017
Plus, simple treatments to undo the damage
Dry hair is not a hair type—it's a condition that can be treated. Your first step: Find out what's stripping strands of their natural oils. We asked experts in the field to nail down some culprits, as well as simple treatments to nix dry, damaged hair for good.

1. The Weather
“Summer includes overexposure to the sun, swimming, and products with alcohol, which can all dehydrate hair,” says Remington celebrity stylist Richard Marin. "And with winter comes extreme cold followed by overheated indoors, which can make hair parched and dry."

2. Smoothing Treatments
Too many smoothing treatments done close together can leave your locks super thirsty. “These treatments work effectively to smooth out hair and make it luscious and dreamy, but if they are done too frequently, the buildup of protein on the hair causes it to become brittle,” says hairstylist Sylvia Vaught, who's also the founder of L.A.-based home blowout service Blow Me.

3. Hormone Changes
“Birth control pills, pregnancy, and menopause are all times of physiological shifts within the body that can have an adverse effect on the hair, including dryness and brittleness,” says Vaught. She recommends seeing your doctor to discuss treatment options.
4. Using the Wrong Shampoo
Not all shampoos are created equal: Vaught warns against using your man’s drying shampoo when yours runs out. “You would be better off rinsing your hair a few times with just water to remove some of the oil, rather than risk the stripping effects of a shampoo that is not right for you,” she says.

5. Brushing Hair When Wet
“Remember that hair is most susceptible to breakage when it is wet,” says Vaught. This won’t necessarily dry the hair, but it will leave the ends brittle and lead to breakage down the entire strand. Instead of brushing wet hair, use a comb with a bit of leave-in conditioner on it.

6. Daily Heat Styling
Whether it’s the dryer or flat iron, daily heat to the hair will strip the hair of moisture. “This causes quite a bit of unnecessary damage that can be avoided,” says Vaught. If heat is imperative, aim to keep the temperature below 400 degrees.

Fashion / Things You Should Know About Hair Relaxing by NNFems: 10:18am On Feb 21, 2017
A lot of women relax their hair but do not know the do’s and don’ts of hair relaxing hair. Today we’ll be abolishing 5 relaxing hair myths. We hope they would help you get better results when relaxing your hair at your next appointment.

1. I’ve washed my hair, can I relax my hair now?
Ans: Sorry darling, No you can’t! You cannot relax your hair after a wash. If you are due for a relaxer, avoid cleansing or co-washing (washing with a conditioner). Wait for 7-10 days before relaxing. Also avoid itching or scratching your scalp before relaxing your hair. This will prevent irritations on the scalp that may lead to the relaxer burning your scalp.

2. It’s okay to relax your hair every month.
Oh dear! No its not! Just because you’ve got new growth doesn’t mean its time to relax. Give your hair some time to breathe. Give your hair at least 8-10 weeks before you relax your hair. It is important to maintain a regular relaxing schedule for your hair. Listen to your hair, 8-10 weeks might not work for everyone. Some people only relax 4 times a year. It all depends on your hair type and needs. Knowing your hair type helps you prepare properly.

3. Relax the entire hair, from root to tip. They all need relaxing.
No they all don’t, sweetheart! The only part of your hair that needs to be touched up by a relaxer is you undergrowth. Do not allow relaxer all over your hair. This can make already relaxed hair weak and cause breakage. If you want your already relaxed ends straight, use rollers or a hair tong when styling.

Fashion / Hair Steaming Do's And Don'ts For Relaxed Hair (part 2) by NNFems: 10:16am On Feb 20, 2017
Don’t...

1. Cover your head. Covering your hair with a plastic cap is one of the worse things you can do. You want your hair to be exposed directly to the moist heat. Allow your hair to feel the steam so that the conditioner can penetrate and work effectively. The direct steam melts the deep conditioner into your hair immediately.

2. Leave your hair down. Wearing your hair down, with conditioner, while under the steamer is not effective. Your ends, the oldest part of your hair, will be neglected and won’t receive the benefits of the deep conditioner under the direct moist heat.

3. Go under the steamer right away. I usually like to wait at least 5-7 minutes before sitting under my steamer. During this time I’ll finish applying conditioner to my hair, clip it all up and then go under the steamer. Five to seven minutes is enough time for the water to bubble up and the vapors to get hot.

4. Neglect your nape! Some steamers have a small hood making it hard to cover every inch of your head effectively. Try to position yourself, or your head, to get the steam on the nape area. This area tends to be a trouble spot for most, therefore it’s important not to forget it.

5. Over do it! Steaming is addictive; however, it should be done, at the very most, once a week. Increasing the frequency, on a weekly basis, can cause over-moisturizing. Over moist hair can lead to weak limp hair and possibly breakage.

Fashion / Hair Steaming Do's And Don'ts For Relaxed Hair (part 1) by NNFems: 10:15am On Feb 19, 2017
When your hair is relaxed and or color treated, steaming is one of the best things you can do to pamper your hair. Hair steaming is beneficial as the heat aids in hydrating dry hair leaving your parched tresses happy. The moist heat also encourages blood flow to circulate, promoting hair growth too! The steam lifts the hair cuticle allowing your treatments to penetrate deeply into the hair shaft helping to heal damaged hair.
Steaming has allowed my hair to retain moisture, increase softness and stimulate growth. It’s a must for my thirsty 4b hair! Along the way, I’ve discovered a few essential do’s and don’ts to be mindful of while steaming. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to remember while hair steaming:

Do...
1. Steam once a week. A weekly dose of steaming adds extra hydration to the hair. Over time, steaming aids in improving elasticity and moisture retention.

2. Grab a washcloth. Steaming generates a lot of heat and the moisture may run down your face or drip onto your shoulder. Use a washcloth to wipe your face or wear a headband to absorb the moisture, preventing it from dripping down.

3. Steam for 20-30mins per session. The duration of your steam session is everything! Be sure to stay put under that steamer for maximum hydration. Give your cuticles time to lift and absorb the conditioner. Grab a magazine or your favourite book to help pass the time.

4. Clip your hair up. It’s important to have all of your hair, ends included, under the steamer. Your ends are the oldest part of your hair so having them under the steamer ensures they will receive all the benefits.

5. Cool down. I’ve learned that after a steaming session, it’s key to wait until your hair is cool to the touch and then rinse the conditioner out. Cool hair signifies that the cuticles are officially closed sealing all the benefits of the conditioner inside the hair shaft.

Fashion / For Men: 10 Natural Ways To Make Your Beard Grow Faster by NNFems: 10:26am On Feb 16, 2017
Beards stand for masculinity, so a fully grown moustache and beard is a source of great pride. That is probably why 'grow beard faster' is one of the most popular search phrases on Google. We try and decode facial hair growth and list some ways to make your beard grow faster, naturally.

Tip No #1: Exfoliate your skin once a week. This will help remove dead cells and stimulate hair growth.

Tip No #2: Wash your skin with warm water using a mild cleanser twice a day. Clean skin accelerates hair growth.

Tip No #3: Eucalyptus helps promote facial hair growth, so use a moisturiser with eucalyptus as the main ingredient and massage it on your face to grow your beard faster.

Tip No #4: Make sure you sleep well as this will help repair damaged skin cells and promote beard growth.

Tip No #5: Certain vitamins and minerals help increase the speed at which facial hair grows. Include Vitamins A, B, C and E in your diet as they speed up the hair growth process.

Tip No#6: Keep a tab on ingrown hair; beards usually don't grow evenly if there are ingrown hairs on your face. Here are some home remedies to prevent ingrowths.

Tip No#7: Take 2.5 mg of biotin every day to help your beard grow faster.

Tip No #8: Beards will grow more quickly when you are relaxed, and many beauty and health experts believe hair reveals stress. Manage stress in healthy ways through meditation and yoga for better results.

Tip No #9: Increase the amount of protein in your diet. The protein found in meat, fish, eggs and nuts will help the hair on your face grow quicker.

Tip No #10: Refrain from shaping or trimming your hair very often. Groom your beard only after six weeks when it is full grown.

Fashion / How To Maintain And Grow Out Your Hair Edges by NNFems: 11:07am On Feb 15, 2017
Here are a few tips for maintaining and growing out your edges

- When styling with extensions, have your hairstylist make parts around your edges bigger than those on the rest of your head.

- You don’t have to always pull your edges back into a style, let them hang loose often, this would reduce tension around the hairline

- Make sure to always apply some hair cream to your scalp including your edges to reduce dryness. Massage your edges, morning and night with Apple’s HERBAL HAIR & SCALP TREATMENT or Apple HAIR TREATMENT to stimulate and nourish your scalp and cover with a satin scarf before bed at night.

- Pay attention to your edges; don’t keep a hairstyle in for too long take it down. The older your hairstyle gets, the weightier the strands become because of build-up and can weigh your edges down.

Not everyone has problems with their edges but it is always a good idea to give them the Tender-Loving Care they need. Healthy edges keep your hairstyle pretty and fresh!

Maximize Your Lashes

All you need is the right mascara and these tips from makeup artist Dick Page:
1. Start by curling your lashes. Gently pinch lashes at the roots and then move along the length, making pulse-like squeezes as you go.
2. Apply mascara by wiggling the wand back and forth at the roots to deposit as much of it as possible before pulling the wand straight up.
3. To make lashes look long and separated, apply three coats of mascara—but comb through the mascara while it's still wet with a clean, dry spooley brush.

Get Smooth Lips

1. Exfoliate: Slather on a lip balm with a touch of alphy hydroxy acid.
2. Moisturize: Apply a creamy balm containing petrolatum, shea butter, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, or ceramides.
3. Add color: Try a tinted balm

Apply Fragrance Like a Pro

Fashion / 2 Easy Ways To Create Sultry, Carefree Beach Hair by NNFems: 10:51am On Feb 10, 2017
Beach hair is sort of a sultry look for soft, messy waves. They don’t have to be sultry, but it’s fun to make them that way. You can get your hair to have beach waves a couple of different ways. We’ll present you a photo do it yourself tutorial, and 2 written guides to help you achieve this stunning look.

Beach waves look the best in hair that is a few inches past the shoulders. If you have some natural wave in your hair, that is helpful. If not, that is okay too. Get some curl-enhancing mouse from the store. Spray your hair lightly with water just until it is damp. Put a little bit of the curling mousse in your hair and tip your head upside down. Get the mousse all the way through your hair, gently scrunching a bit as you go. You could even start with a touch of coconut or olive oil so there is a barrier between the mousse and your hair for extra softness.

1. Take a blow dryer with a diffuser and gently scrunch your hair. This should just take about 5-8 minutes. For added fun to this look, the model is wearing a hat. If you like hats, go for it! Not a baseball cap though. This is meant to carry the care-free, beach look. Grab your sunhat that is not as likely to give you hat head.

2. Another way to get beach waves is to use a large, 1″ curling iron. You’ll want to put on a heat protecting spray on your hair to protect a little from the heat damage. Separate your hair into sections, starting from one side to the next. Take a section in the front of your hair and wrap it around the barrel. Hold for about 10 seconds depending on how well your hair holds curl and how long it takes to form the curl. You don’t want to hold the barrel over your hair for too long – it’s not healthy for your hair.

Gently unwrap your hair from the curling iron and start another sections. And again, about 8-10 seconds. Repeat the steps all the way around your head. These are messy curls, so you are not after perfection. You are looking for very soft, loose waves. If your curls came out wavy, but overly defined, tousle them a bit. Otherwise move them a bit until they are where you want them to be. Spray your hair with a little finishing spray.
