*More suspects to join former minister
By Soni Daniel, Northern Region Editor There were indications, yesterday, that a former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Allison-Madueke, arrested and released in the United Kingdom, on Friday, on money laundering allegations, may be charged to court, this week. And feelers showed that she will not be the only person in the dock. Sunday Vanguard learnt that besides the four other persons arrested with the former minister, more suspects may also be arraigned. Meanwhile, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detectives, who raided the Abuja home of Allison-Madueke, just at about the time of her arrest in the UK, on Friday, reportedly recovered cash running into millions of Naira. The trial is expected to be conducted in London and is likely to draw thousands of Nigerians resident in the United Kingdom (UK) but no date was specified, last night, when Sunday Vanguard made contacts with the National Crime Agency (NCA), which arrested and released Diezani and the four others on Friday. An official of the NCA gave indication of the trial in a telephone chat but pointed out that the identities of all the suspects would only be unveiled at the point of charging them to court. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/more-suspects-to-join-diezani-uk-govt/ |

The political tussle in Rivers state has taken another dimension with the immediate past Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has daring his successor, Nyesom Wike, to take him to court if he possess any evidence of graft against him. Recall that Wike had made several corruption allegations against the former governor who is rumoured to be on the highly awaited ministerial list of ‘President Muhammadu Buhari. Amaechi is among the 22 members on Nigeria’s delegation to the 70th United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York. “Let him (Wike) prove it in court. Tell him I said he should go to court. I have a wonderful reputation and I challenge Wike; he will not destroy that reputation. I won’t let him destroy it. He doesn’t have that kind of reputation; he will never have that kind of reputation,” he told Nation. He added further; “It is not enough for a panel to indict a man. If Eze Wike wants to fight me, let him go to court. He keeps saying I’m a thief; but let him show me one property. …He knows I know. So, if he has evidence, why hasn’t he put it out to the public? My children are proud of me. They say I’m one of the most honest Nigerians they know.” Amaechi said he had no house in Port Harcourt because he could not afford to build one. “When I say I don’t have a house in Port Harcourt, Wike would say it’s an irresponsible man that doesn’t have a house in his own village. “He won’t ask: ‘Do you have money to build a house?’ I thought he would have attacked me that I have money. I just didn’t build a house. He won’t ask me how much my salary was as (House of Assembly’s) Speaker.” Amaechi also took a swipe at former president Goodluck Jonathan stressing that President Muhammadu Buhari had got more support than former President Godluck Jonathan ever did. “The level of corruption in that era was so bad that we couldn’t pay salaries. As the governor of Rivers State, my allocation was reduced from N25 billion to about N6 billion. But the Buhari administration is here to save Nigeria. “At the General Assembly, we had a lot of respect. We chose who to see and who not to see. Before, no one wanted to see us.” He added that despite Nigeria missing a key meeting about Boko Haram and the President almost missing the Pope, “This is one of the best. Although this is my first time as a delegate to the UN, I have gone to other parts of the world with the former president. The way president Buhari is being treated is not the same way President Goodluck was treated. Huge respect for a man of honor and integrity, as against our former president. So you can’t compare, you can’t. I’m leaving here very proud to be a Nigerian.” Recall that PDP in Rivers state has replied to the Rotimi Amaechi, former state governor, suit against the party. Amaechi had sued the PDP, its chairman and two others over claims that he (Amaechi) misappropriated $758m (N80bn) belonging to the state while in officehttps://www.naij.com/571645-amaechi-attacks-wike-read-said.html

A new born baby with his umbilical cord still attached was found along Dibue road, Ikot Ekpene in Aka Ibom State this afternoon. A lady after delivering this baby, put her in a polythene bag and dumped her by the road side. An eye witness told LIB that he saw a lady in that area this afternoon but didn’t know what she’d left behind until she’d gone. The baby was already dead before people noticed what was in the bag. The photos are painful to look at. If you have the stomach, see them after the cut

SUBJECT:- SOUTH-EAST APC TO REVIEW THE ACTIVITIES OF SOME OF ITS LEADERS DURING THE LAST ELECTION The All Progressive Congress (APC) South-East will now look into the activities of some of the leaders of the Party in their respective States during the last elections with the aim of fishing out those who sabotaged the Party and acted as mole for the last administration, and who are also scheming now for appointments and feel that they can achieve that through blackmail. The setting up of a Committee to x-ray the activities of APC leaders in the zone during the elections has become increasingly necessary now following the attempts by some of such leaders who never believed that the APC could win to embark or resort to blackmail at the moment against those who made the APC what it is in the South-East because they want appointments. Obviously, Mr. Osita Okechukwu who has been parading himself as the Publicity Secretary of APC in the zone is one of such leaders in the APC in the South-East who never made any contribution to the activities of the Party in any way, but is now been driven by the ambition for Political appointment and he believes he can achieve that by blackmailing genuine leaders like the Imo State Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha. For instance, Mr. Okechukwu had, while reacting to the interview granted to Sunday Sun by Governor Okorocha said that the Imo governor never genuinely campaigned for President Mohammadu Buhari and APC, and questioned why he did not deliver the three APC Senatorial Candidates in Imo during the election. Mr. Okechukwu had chosen to attack Governor Okorocha because the Imo governor has insisted that those who staked out their necks for APC in Enugu State where Mr. Okechukwu comes from should be the ones to be considered for appointments. That is the only crime of Owelle Okorocha against Mr. Okechukwu. It is a common knowledge that two States, Rivers and Imo had experienced the highest level of impunity from the PDP Controlled federal government during the last election. In Imo, amoured cars were rolled out against Governor Okorocha and all the security outfits were all out against the governor and APC. Yet, governor Okorocha fought like a lion. Won two federal House of Representatives members for APC, and indeed the only ones in the whole of South-East. Won the governorship for APC, also the only one in the whole of South-East and won twenty-two out of the twenty-seven House of Assembly members for APC, and under such militarized scenario the State had found herself. Following the lopsided logic of Mr. Okechukwu, would any reasonable person in APC or in the Country now say that because Chief Rotimi Amaechi could not deliver APC in the two elections, he therefore didn’t genuinely campaign for APC or President Buhari, with what happened in Rivers State during the elections. The APC in the South-East should celebrate Governor Okorocha for giving them two National Assembly members, one governor and twenty-two House of Assembly members out of twenty-seven. And above all, for the unprecedented pressure he mounted on the PDP people that made them not to return the kind of election figures they gave to Goodluck Jonathan in 2011. On the issue of Campaign, President Buhari was in Imo for more than three times for Campaigns and all in grand style. The wife was also in Imo for the same purpose. Governor Okorocha was in Aba, Onitsha, Enugu, Umuahia, Awka, and the whole of South-East Campaigning for both APC and President Buhari. All these were done before Nigerians. But a man like Mr. Osita Okechukwu could not deliver his booth for APC, and not to talk of his ward, or LGA for either in the Presidential election or in the governorship election. Yet, he is aspiring to be minister for doing nothing for the Party. Let him display the results of his booth and ward at least to prove us wrong. Certain things must be done and certain mistakes corrected to reposition the Party in the South-East to make things difficult for political hawkers. Sam Onwuemeodo Chief Press Secretary to the Governor |
Kim Davis released from jail in dispute over gay marriage A US judge has released a Kentucky official from jail so long as she does not interfere with her deputies when they issue marriage licences to gay couples. Kim Davis, an elected official, has said that her Christian faith should exempt her from signing the licences. If she interferes with her deputies, federal Judge David Bunning said she could be jailed for defying the court. The US Supreme Court declared gay marriage legal in June. After she was released on Tuesday, Ms Davis greeted a large crowd of supporters as the song Eye of the Tiger blared on a nearby speaker system. "I just want to give God the glory. His people have rallied, and you are a strong people," she said with her lawyer, Mat Staver, and Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee by her side. Mr Staver said on Tuesday she would return to work this week. He would not say whether Ms Davis would interfere with her deputies but said "she would not violate her conscience". Two federal courts and the US Supreme Court have ruled against Ms Davis after she repeatedly refused to issue marriage licences since June. Kim Davis is comforted by her lawyer Mat Staver A large crowd of supporters has gathered outside the jail where Ms Davis was being held Image copyrightEPA Image caption Ms Davis spent several days in jail Ms Davis, a Democrat who serves Rowan County, a rural area in eastern Kentucky, was found in contempt of court on Thursday and jailed. "God's moral law conflicts with my job duties," Ms Davis said on Thursday. "You can't be separated from something that's in your heart and in your soul." The following day, several of her deputies began issuing marriage licences to couples. It is unclear whether the Judge Bunning's latest order will resolve the dispute. On Thursday, Judge Bunning offered a compromise where Ms Davis could avoid jail if she agreed not to interfere with her deputies, but she refused. Because Ms Davis is an elected official, she cannot be fired. She could be impeached by the Kentucky legislature, but the body is not in session.
