A zoo keeper at Indonesia’s Surabaya zoo has landed in trouble after he was arrested and charged with impregnating a female orangutan, reports the Kalimantan Press. The 38-year-old zoo keeper was filmed in full action by a series of hidden cameras put in place by the zoo’s security officials after doubts emerged about the man’s devious actions towards the zoo animals. He was caught on camera having sexual intercourse with the animals. “Some animals seemed sexually aroused when it was time to feed them” explains Akhiroel Yahya, an employee of the zoo for 14 years. “But what made us most suspicious was when we discovered Marylin, our oldest orangutan, was pregnant. She has never been in contact with any other orangutans because of her aggressive nature, so it didn’t make any sense” he acknowledges, visibly troubled by the news. Then out of curiosity and desire to know, the zoo officials decided on what to do. “At first, we clearly did not comprehend what had happened,” admits the zoo’s director, Abdoel Hakim. “Marilyn has been secluded for the past 10 years, it was a total mystery,” he acknowledges. “It is only when we placed several hidden cameras that we learned the horrible truth” he admits, visibly angered by the whole situation. However, the zoo keeper had denied everything. He denied any wrong doing on his part. “He said everything he had done was consensual,” explains police chief Abubakar Jaar. “He said he loved each and everyone of the animals and was very sorry he had impregnated the orangutan,” he told local reporters. “He says he did not know orangutans could get pregnant from humans,” he added. “Contrary to popular belief, the orangutan species is much closer to the human species than chimpanzees. We share practically the same DNA code, with only minute differences, which could explain the orangutan falling pregnant from this man” explains Paleobiologist Bachtiar Pado Panghulu, of the University of Jakarta. “Particularly in Indonesia, the genetic profile of some of the population is extremely close to the orangutan species, leading us to believe they’re might have been a common ancestor to both species only a few hundred thousand years ago,” he admits. http://www.ireporteronline.com/25639/unbelievable-zoo-keeper-impregnates-female-orangutan-ape-photo

NAIJ.com’s reporter and photo journalist discover the beautiful sceneries at the Freedom Falls in Owerri – Imolites heap praise on Governor Okorocha for the beauty in the tourist destination Given its natural endowments, cultural diversity and rich history, Imo state ought to be a haven for tourist, however, little is known about this tourism hub. This is perhaps one of the reasons why the Imo state government in December 2015, flagged off the Freedom Falls. During a recent tour of Owerri, the Imo state capital, NAIJ.com and photo journalist discovered, the beautiful sceneries at this tourist destination as many trooped to the centre to celebrate the Easter holidays. Located at Warehouse junction, opposite Orlu road, in Owerri, people of different levels and cadre appreciated Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state for the beautiful sceneries in the waterfalls. People who couldn’t hold back their joy said that they can now see and enjoy what people pay to go and enjoy in America, London, etc. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Fun-seekers at the Freedom Falls. Photo: Michael Obasa Speaking to NAIJ.com’s reporter, one of the fun-seekers who identified himself as Chinaza said: “I was passing by with my friends when I saw the beauty of this place. I don’t stay in Owerri but I have heard of this place and I decided to come see it myself. It’s beautiful and I must commend the governor for this initiative.” The business effect of the Freedom Falls can’t also be overlooked as cameramen jumped at the opportunity to take pictures of fun seekers, who desired to have a photograph for future purposes. Beauty is indeed at the Freedom Falls in Owerri and Imolites are part of it. See pictures below: Read more: https://www.naij.com/782085-see-gov-okorocha-owerri-people-cant-stop-talking-photos.html

BIRTHDAY REMARKS AND RESPONSE BY ASIWAJU BOLA AHMED TINUBU.64TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION. ICC, ABUJA.MARH 29TH, 2016 1. I thank everyone for taking part in this important symposium. The importance of this event is not that it comes on my birthday. It is due to the topic explored and the richness of the contributions made in this regard. I am simply honored that you would use my birthday as a platform for this vital national discourse. 2. I tender a deep APPRECIATION to Vice President Osinbajo and all others who organized this colloquium. Yours has been a job excellently done. Above all, I thank President Muhammadu Buhari, Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for giving of his precious time to be here today. In so doing, you have provided a most wonderful birthday present. Thank you. 3. You also have given to the people of Nigeria something even more important. Mr. President, in your Easter message, you asked the people to be steadfast and of strong hope because you would not let them down. That you would fulfill your promise to bring positive change to our beloved land. 4. Today, on my birthday, I ask that you allow me to support what you said to the people. I believe in our President and his administration. He is a leader dedicated to the betterment of Nigeria. He needs our support to make this a reality. President Buhari and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu at the International Conference Centre President Buhari and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu at the International Conference Centre 5. During the 7th Colloquium which held last year (2015) in Lagos, I recall I made a request. I said the best birthday gift I wanted was for people go out and vote massively to secure election victory. To the glory of God, our party, the APC won a remarkable victory. 6. That historic victory has placed on us a heavy responsibility to right the wrongs of the past years. Our path may be tough at present. But I do not entertain fear because I know our people are more resilient than the challenges we face. Thus, I also ask the people to be of firm conviction and strong hope that we are working for and moving toward a better day. 7. I believe in destiny. Yes, the times that have come upon us are rough. Yet, I cannot help but believe that we have been put here at this appointed place and appointed time for a reason more profound than mere coincidence. 8. The workings of harsh economic reality have revealed the fragility of the economic position we have too long occupied. With the downturn in oil prices, this nation can no longer function as it did. The lack of government performance that has for years been a source of pain is no longer tolerable. This government is committed to reversing the trend towards a positive and progressive outcome. 9. We have reached the point where we can no longer look the other way because there is longer another way. If we are to experience a new growth and development, we must do it ourselves. Nigerians must become Nigeria’s lifeline. 10. Those who came before us believed in weak governance but strong corruption. They were the authors of the malfeasance and ruthless indifference that enchained this nation and its remarkable people. They acted as if their pilferage would never end. But it was ended by the people of this great country. 11. However, destiny does not believe in failure. It would never ask people like that to correct the wrongs they themselves had instituted. We can’t expect the author to burn his own book. That group could no more be the rebuilders of a new Nigeria than wind can turn to rock or mud into gold. 12. That correction has begun. This is why I am gratified to have President Buhari among us today. Upon his shoulders rest the fate of 170 million people. However, he does not carry that burden alone. Permit to speak for the vast majority of Nigerians who dream of the same change of which you speak Mr.President: We are with you. We are determined. We have resolved to re-build this country together. 13. Here, I beg your indulgence to allow me a few words about the subject matter at hand: Agriculture. We have heard many excellent ideas and suggestions. I foresee much of what we heard will soon be implemented policy. The nation will soon enjoy a rebirth of this vital economic sector. 14. Through it all, we need remember that what we have discussed cannot be reduced to a gaggle of aggregate economic figures. It is not about this or that rate of GDP growth. Those are numbers intended to help us read the story but we should never see them as the true story itself. 15. Our real quest is to strive to provide the people with sufficient food at affordable prices. The real story is that our farmers and their land must become more productive but they also must be secured with better pay for their increased output. The real story is that our produce must not go to waste but much more of it must be turned into processed goods for domestic consumption. 16. In the end, we strive to make this a land where no child goes to bed in want and hunger. A land where no loving mother or father is brought to tears because they have not a grain of rice or slice of bread to feed their family. A country where no farmer is made poorer the more he works. 17. Let us move from where we now are into becoming that nation that feeds not only its people but has a surplus to bolster its neighbors and beyond. Let us arrive at the place where our country side can feed our cities and our cities can produce the manufactured goods needed in both the city and countyside. Nigeria’s detractors want to label us a wobbly basket case. Well, let us show them that we can become a vibrant breadbasket for this region and the continent. I know this is the Nigeria that this administration wants. I know this is the Nigeria the people want. I know this is the Nigeria that is to come. As such, I thank you all for this wonderful birthday present you have given me. May God bless you and may He forever bless the FRN. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2016/03/29/for-the-love-of-nigeria-bola-tinubu-delivers-emotional-birthday-speech/ |
Tinubu ‘associates’ pledge N64 billion birthday gift to less privileged A group that claims political alliance with a former Lagos state governor, Bola Tinubu, says it will raise N64 billion as a birthday gift to Mr. Tinubu, but said the money will go into helping less privileged Nigerians, including the physically challenged, internally displaced persons and the aged. The group, All Progressive Congress Urban-Rural Self Employment and Poverty Eradication Nationwide, said the initiative would help in alleviating poverty in the country. The chairman of the group, Daniel Mwanmut, said in a press statement Tuesday in Jos, Plateau State, that the initiative was to mark the Mr. Tinubu’s 64th birthday, celebrated on Tuesday. “APCURSEPEN programme is aimed at boosting investment in masses oriented housing scheme for workers pensioners, farmers Artisans, traders transporters, physically challenged persons (IDP’s) especially in northern Nigeria and particularly in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa and Kaduna states, in view of the ungodly activities of Boko Haram insurgents, cattle rustlers and communal violence,” the group said. It added that, “APCURSEPEN programme is aimed at mobilizing wealthy members of the All Progressive Congress and public spirited individuals to support creating self-employment opportunities for our youth and to boost poverty eradication in the 774 local Government Areas in Nigeria”. The statement also said the facility would be accessed through Mr. Tinubu’s cooperative society, “Made Easy Cooperative Society ABATHOME”. The group said it would organise other events including musical concert and sport activities to raise funds. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/200996-tinubu-associates-pledge-n64-billion-birthday-gift-less-privileged.html |

Why we must say no to Genetically modified food (GM foods) . Definition Genetically modified foods, GM foods or genetically engineered foods, are foods produced from organisms that have had changes introduced into their DNA using the methods of genetic engineering as opposed to traditional cross breeding. According to the World Health Organization, "Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be defined as organisms (i.e. plants, animals or microorganisms) in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination. The technology is often called 'modern biotechnology' or 'gene technology', sometimes also 'recombinant DNA technology' or 'genetic engineering'. ... Foods produced from or using GM organisms are often referred to as GM foods. I will not like to go the history or how it came to play. Risk associated with the consumption of GM foods. 1. HEALTH CONSEQUENCES. The rise in autoimmune diseases, infertility, gastrointestinal problems and chronic diseases may be associated with the introduction of GM foods. In a position paper by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, the authors ask all physicians to consider the role of GM foods in the nation’s health crisis, and advise their patients to avoid all GM foods whenever possible. The Academy also recommends a moratorium on GM seeds and calls for immediate independent safety testing and the labeling of all food items containing genetically modified products. As of 2010, the U.S. does not require food manufacturers to identify foodstuffs produced with genetically modified crops. 2. ENVIROMENTAL DESTRUCTION Most GMO seeds are genetically engineered to be herbicide tolerant, resistant to insect infestation and disease. Environmentalists worry that the characteristics of GM crops may encourage farmers to increase their use of herbicides and pesticides, which will raise human consumption of dangerous toxins. GM crops also manufacture their own pesticides, which puts further poisons into humans and soil and may cause unforeseen changes in the environment. Another concern is that toxins contained in the GMO plants may harm other organisms, such as monarch caterpillars, bees and birds. The pesticide found in genetically modified cotton and corn is implicated in the deaths of poultry, cows, horses, sheep and buffalo worldwide 3. GMOs do not increase yields, and work against feeding a hungry world. Whereas sustainable non-GMO agricultural methods used in developing countries have conclusively resulted in yield increases of 79% and higher, GMOs do not, on average, increase yields at all. This was evident in the Union of Concerned Scientists’ 2009 report Failure to Yield―the definitive study to date on GM crops and yield. The International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD) report, authored by more than 400 scientists and backed by 58 governments, stated that GM crop yields were “highly variable” and in some cases, “yields declined.” The report noted, “Assessment of the technology lags behind its development, information is anecdotal and contradictory, and uncertainty about possible benefits and damage is unavoidable.” They determined that the current GMOs have nothing to offer the goals of reducing hunger and poverty, improving nutrition, health and rural livelihoods, and facilitating social and environmental sustainability. On the contrary, GMOs divert money and resources that would otherwise be spent on more safe, reliable, and appropriate technologies. 4. GMOs contaminate―forever. GMOs cross pollinate and their seeds can travel. It is impossible to fully clean up our contaminated gene pool. Self-propagating GMO pollution will outlast the effects of global warming and nuclear waste. The potential impact is huge, threatening the health of future generations. GMO contamination has also caused economic losses for organic and non-GMO farmers who often struggle to keep their crops pure. Though I am in support of mechanized farming, but we must do the right thing. Nigerian Farmers let us say no to GMO products. list of countries that have banned GMO products. Asia (4)Turkey,Kyrgyzstan,Bhutan,Saudi Arabia Americas (4) Belize,Peru,Ecuador,Venezuela Europe (28) Scotland,Wales,Northern Ireland,Germany,France,The Netherlands,Malta,Cyprus,Greece Bulgaria,Russia,Serbia,Croatia,Italy,Denmark,Hungary,Moldova,Latvia,Lithuania,Austria,Poland,Slovenia,Azerbaijan,Bosnia and Herzegovina,Luxembourg,Ukraine (although there is massive GM contamination in the country),Norway,Switzerland. Africa (2) The picture on GM cultivation bans across Africa is not clear due to the current pressure being put on many African governments by the Biotech industry and the Gates Foundation to lift long-standing bans on the import of unmilled GMO seeds or unmilled GMO food aid, however two countries do still have full legal bans on GM crop cultivation: Algeria (since 2000),Madagascar (since 2002) https://www.facebook.com/nwosu.osinachi.5/posts/851602084985418 |
Tinubu a pillar, leader in Yorubaland, Nigeria – Governor Fayose Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state on Monday described former Lagos state Governor, Bola Tinubu, as a pillar in Yorubaland and Nigeria as a whole. Mr. Fayose said this in a congratulatory message to mark Tiunbu’s 64th birthday. Mr. Tinubu was born on March 29, 1952. A statement issued by Idowu Adelusi, the Chief Press Secretary to Mr. Fasoye, said the APC national leader had over the years proven to be a great political figure in the country. “I heartily felicitate with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as he clocks 64 on March 29. “Whether one likes it or not, Asiwaju Tinubu has become a political pillar and leader, not only in Yorubaland but in Nigeria. “He is a great politician who takes well-calculated political steps. “I and the good people of Ekiti State join millions of Nigerians and Asiwaju Tinubu’s friends and supporters across the world to rejoice with him on this auspicious occasion. “Asiwaju Tinubu is a good case study when one talks about political resilience and doggedness and no wonder he now ranks among the leaders of this great country. “I pray that God gives him the grace to witness many more years in sound health in the land of the living,’’ Mr. Fayose was quoted as saying in the statement.
