Celebrities / Segun Arinze Mercilessly Blasted And Finished On IG By His Own Daughter by NollyGist: 12:13pm On May 11, 2017
Nollywood Veteran actor, Segun Arinze, who took to his IG page to celebrate his daughter, Renny, who turned 20, got the shock of his life a short while later.
The infuriated daughter blasted the heck out of her dad for not tagging her in his message and for spelling her mother's name wrongly. She was also hurt by the fact that her dad couldn't call her on her birthday.
The girl shouldn't have done that publicly.
It was totally wrong of her.

But that was the slam of the century.

Birthday message gone wrong.

Literature / Zayna Diaries 1: The Interview by NollyGist: 3:17pm On May 08, 2017
“Oh no!! It’s not as crisp as it should be!!” I screamed. Mum probably though I’d lost it. I’d ironed that skirt to the very brink of death and it still didn’t look as crisp as I thought it should.

“You’re just nervous. Calm down. You’re going to do great.” Mum said soothingly. I stepped in for a hug and inhaled her rather baby-like scent. For some reason, Mum showered with cussons baby soap.

“I hope so. I gotta get going. I want to arrive at least thirty minutes early.” I backed away from Mum and walked to the door. More like ‘sashayed’ to the door. No thanks to the 5-inch thin-heeled Dylan Schmore shoes.

“Why don’t you put on more comfy shoes Dear?” Mum advised. And I always took her advice.

Without another word, I kicked off the corporate but suicidal shoes and ran to my room. In thirty seconds, I was wearing a pair of comfortable wedge heels.

I arrived approximately 32 minutes early and parked my beat-up 1990 bluebird. It looked completely out of place in the midst of the rather level-reducing cars of the GOOGLE NIGERIA staff. Yeah, you heard right. GOOGLE frigging NIGERIA. The branch office is situated in the capital territory. My family luckily lives in the territory.

Anyway, GOOGLE NIGERIA called on First-class candidates of Computer Engineering to apply for the positions Software engineers. Two positions were available.

Zagadis, zagadat, I was short-listed. My CV and résumé were pretty impressive though. Thanks to all the hours I poured into my textbooks at school. All the movies and I placed I didn’t watch or go to. And all the hours of sleep I gave up. First-class no be beans oo!

I walked briskly into through the motion-sensor glass doors that looked like something yanked out of the capital city of Tokyo, Japan. Crystal clear. The reception room was the size of a football field. No surprise there. Everything was as I expected it to be. Over-the-top decor.

“Good Morning,” I greeted the receptionist in my deepest alto tone. ” I’m here for the interview.”

“Good Morning Miss.” She greeted back with an impossibly fake smile and a too-cheerful voice. “Please proceed to the conference room. Down the hall by the right. Good luck”.

“Thank you,” I replied.

I walked over to the conference room and saw about ten others already there. For real? I glanced at the gold-studded wall clock. 7:30. The interviews were to start at 8:00. Thirty more minutes to put my mind together. I decided to take advantage of the opportunity and get a look at the others as more candidates trooped in.

Some looked nerdy. Like, really nerdy. This guy at my left looked geeky. Like, the intimidating kind of geeky. Two girls wore make-up that could pass off as art work. By that, I mean way too much. And plastic. But we all had one thing in common. First-class degrees. Both earned and bought.

“Alright fellaz!!!” Came a booming voice from the door. I looked up, and it took all of my will-power not to say ‘holy wakaroni’. There was no way the insanely tiny man with gray hair and wire-rimmed glasses could have such a mega-phone voice.

“Come one. Let’s begin!” I decided I liked him. His voice might be earth-quake-inducing, but it was cheerful. Cheerful ‘s good.

We all followed him down the hall where the Chief Managing Director was waiting to address us. A tall man in his mid fifties, who, to my utmost surprise, had a patch of brown spray on his hair. Like seriously?

“Welcome, Candidates,” He began. “GOOGLE NIGERIA is honoured to have the best with her today. I am John Roberts, CMD. I just wanted to give you a few words of advice. We shall be testing you on four criteria:

Customer relations and people skills, as the software engineers have to relate with people to know their problems; Software engineering itself, because we have to see how good you are; Speech fluency and writing skills, because you have to document your programs; and finally, character.” He paused to give us a white smile.

“This is GOOGLE NIGERIA,” He continued. “We take in only the best among equals. Right now, you all have a hundred points to thin down to zero. Do not think you have zero to build up to hundred. That is the mentality many students and job applicants have. The hundred is in your hands. You don’t gain, you lose. A word is enough for the wise. Good luck.”

All thirty of us seemed to exhale at once. That had been tense! The tiny man, who introduced himself as Mr Okoye, led us down to a large hall with about 5 doors off to the side. The room had this shea butter smell I’d always found nauseating. The heck?? I got dizzy before you could say shazam!

The doors were for the first interviews. 6 candidates to one door. The process began and after about two hours, it was over. I feel pretty good about it because I had a really friendly conversation with my interviewer. He started off strict and mean but then again, I am the princess of sunshine and I radiate awesomeness. Bam!!

The practical part started, and then I was in my true element. We were tested on every damn thing about networking and web software. From Server management to human search engines. EVERYTHING! That took five concrete hours. Crap! We were all as hungry as Gandal in the movie Graters. That guy that went on for so long without food, his eyes sunk in. Let me not get started on his ribs.

We weren’t even given water. The Okoye guy said it was part of the training. Sometimes the engineers had to spend hours upon hours managing server problems, which is kinda like medical surgery. You can’t take a break. Oh well, I steeled myself. All my days of fasting during the Lenten season was starting to pay off. I could do this. Just had to stop looking at Okoye as he gobbled up a plate of fried chicken and gulped down a bottle of chilled Teem.

The third stage began. Speech fluency and writing skills. It was a written exam. And part of it included reading out some text aloud. Another three hours. By then, it was already 6:00pm. I was starving!!

We were sitting in the conference room, all trying to look indifferent even though we were all developing bore holes in our stomachs, when Okoye came in with some people who dressed like fancy Italian chefs, pushing food carts toward us. Thank Jahhhhhhhh! Finally.

To my utmost dismay, they served us each one tiny chicken pie and a bottle of Fanta. For real? After ten good hours? Anyway, we had no other choice. Half a loaf of bread had always been better than none.

Okoye and his troop left, without even giving us bottle openers. We had emptied the content of our pockets and left our bags at the practical test room. No one had a bottle opener in there. What were we supposed to do? Use our teeth?

Sweet Makaroma! Some of the others actually started uncorking their bottles with their teeth just then. Ow! Talk about razz. I decided to wait.

Everyone, please turn all the diamond chandeliers and spread the richest red carpet so I can present to you, my Nollywood Beau of the week, Richard Mofe-Damijo, A.K.A RMD.

The 55-year-old daddy and granddaddy was born on the 6th day of July, 1961 in Delta State.

He was once the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Delta State. Now that's a position only the hippest and coolest fellas get.

RMD is one of the most beloved mentors in Nollywood and Ghallywood. The number of young actors and actresses who look up to him is actually really alarming.

RMD is a lover of fashion. He's 55, but he loves style and swagg and knows how to go classy and cool.

In 2005, RMD won the AFRICAN MOVIE ACADEMY AWARD for best actor in a leading role. He's starred in several movies including 30 days in Atlanta, Dinner and the Wedding Party.

RMD rules!

This interview is not complete without asking him about his ordeal when he carried cocaine and was arrested in 2004 or there about.

That is unfair. It can't be the only thing they keep asking him of on all his interviews. It was right for them to give him a break and drop an act for which he apologised to Nigerians.
Even so, he wasn't the first and only.

Celebrities / "I Was Wrongly Accused And Decamped From The Movie Set"- Uche Odoputa (pics) by NollyGist: 6:05pm On May 07, 2017
Nollywood’s heartthrob Uche Odoputa revealed how he was sent packing from a movie set, after being accused wrongly. He also opened up on his life, career and foundation in this exclusive interview with www.sochimaezeoke.com

He left the set, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise...

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE MOVIE INDUSTRY?

When I was in Benin, I got a role to feature in ‘Pot of Life’, that was a Tellyfest movie, a network national festival for NTA then. So I started as a young boy there and after that came the advent of the Nollywood industry about the same year, and I can be proud to say that I am one of the oldest, healthy and actively young Nollywood actors because Nollywood is about two decades now and I started around that time too. The first film that was done in Nollywood was ‘Living in Bondage’, after that was ‘Taboo’, then after that was ‘Evil Passion’. All these movies were done almost in the same year. So I played a role in Evil Passion and started from there.

YOU’VE RECENTLY BECOME A TOP-NOTCH A-LIST ACTOR. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS BEHIND THAT ACHIEVEMENT?

It’s basically God. That has been the secret to my achievement. Some jobs come and you feel as if you’ve been cheated, some jobs come and they bless you. They elevate your brand so high and you least expected that you will get there. Accolades and people appreciate you and you get open doors. So that has kept me going and I’m passionate about the job because for me it’s not a means to an end but a career.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL ABOUT REJECTION OF SCRIPTS BY ACTORS?

I could have a certain belief that does not conform to another person’s belief and the person could decide to reject the job and I think it’s more honorable to reject the job than come on the job and frustrate people. I’ve been on a set recently and it was a job that I was having a dual relationship with two different characters. I had the decency to ask the first lady what she was and wasn’t comfortable with as she is a lady. So I asked her if she was comfortable with me touching her because we were going to play a romance scene. We talked about it and she said she was cool with it. And this other young lady came and I asked her the same thing, and she said openly, “I don’t want anybody to kiss me!” I asked her if she read the script and she said yes. I asked if she told the producers that she doesn’t want to be kissed? She said, “ehhh……," It went on and on, I just said to myself, “Uche, you're not the person that employed this lady,” I just excused myself and went outside to have a drink, letting them sort it out. For two hours, they were arguing with this lady and it was dead in the middle of the night, hotels had been paid. We needed to finish and we needed to retire back to our own different hotels, and we needed to travel some distance to get there. I didn’t find that very interesting at all. But for crying out loud I think it’s honorable for you to read your script, because it’s even more dangerous when you haven’t read your script and you don’t know what it’s all about and then you come on set. So if I read the script and the script states that somewhere along the line I’m going to go mad and I’m going to go naked, I’ll negotiate it. If there’s not a way around, if I understand that I need to do that to be able to pass when message to my audience, I’ll prepare my mind to do it and have a way to do it. When my audience starts asking why I went naked, I'll have something to say. So I don’t have a problem with people rejecting scripts. I think it’s more honorable than coming to frustrate people on set.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT ON SET?

(Laughs) Well that would be when we were going on the trip for ‘Battle of Mutanga’. We left Lagos with about three luxurious buses, two of which were full of call girls who were gotten out of brothels somewhere around Old Ojo Road, because the story required that people had to be in the epic level where they only had jigida covering the lower part of their bodies and the upper parts were bare. While we were there, somebody passed on something to one of the girls, and she passed it from behind me to the girl that was standing in front of me. And I didn’t know who the person was but all I saw was that the girl was just looking at something. I looked at it and it was a dirty gold-circle. I asked her who gave it to her and she said she didn’t know. I took it from her and threw it beside me. By the time it was morning and we got to where we all needed to converge and move to Abia state where we were going to shoot, news was everywhere that the director said Uche Odoputa must leave the set or he will leave. I didn’t even know who the director was, because he wasn’t part of the audition. The director was saying to people that I insulted and bullied him. Now the bottom line was that the director apparently had an eye on the girl and felt that I was using my star status to oppress him and take the girl. On the road I was decamped from the movie. That was how they sent me packing from Onitsha. But the issue is that I was accused wrongly.

WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR COLLEAGUES LIKE?

I come with my age on board. I come to work with my experience. Beyond that, I also trained as a director. For you to be a director, you need to be a team person and carry people along. So when I come on set I look at everybody and say, “It could have been my team, how do I manage them?” So I try as much as I can. Some people tolerate me and that’s the way I can be. I have to tolerate other people too to be able to carry the job on.

WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL IN THE INDUSTRY

I don’t have any role model (laughs). I don’t want to be like anybody. I want to be like Uche Odoputa. And I look up to God.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE ACTRESS IN THE INDUSTRY?

‘You wan put me for trouble abi?’ (laughs). Everyone of them. But, there are about a couple of them I respect a lot more. Queen Nwokoye, Mercy Johnson, Joy Agbor, Ruth Kadiri. In fact a lot of them.

HOW DO YOU RELAX WHEN YOU ARE OFF THE SET?

I travel. I like to drive. When you got a good machine you drive the road. I love it.

Celebrities / Joke Silva Blames The Social Media For Failed Celebrity Marriages by NollyGist: 6:48pm On May 06, 2017
Nollywood Veteran actress, Joke Silva Jacobs, who has been happily married to a fellow Nollywood Veteran, Olu Jacobs for decades now, spoke on the causes of failure in celebrity marriages in a chat with New Telegraph, apportioning some of the blame to the social media. She stated that:

“It is because the younger generation are very popular because of social media, and so, whatever happens to them becomes news; forgetting that there are as many divorces, there are many separations in other professions such as medical, financial, legal among others. Name any profession; there are so many separations in those as well."
