Russian focus on ‘liberating’ Donbas hints at shift in strategy
Ukrainian resistance may mean that Russia is changing its strategy to more limited goals and focusing on Donbas.

Russia has claimed that the first phase of its “military operation” in Ukraine was mostly complete, and that it would focus on completely “liberating” eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region.

The announcement on Friday appeared to indicate that Russia may be switching to more limited goals after running into fierce Ukrainian resistance in the first month of the war in Ukraine.

The defence ministry said Russian-backed separatists now controlled 93 percent of Ukraine’s Luhansk region and 54 percent of the Donetsk region – the two areas that jointly make up the Donbas.

“The main objectives of the first stage of the operation have generally been accomplished,” Sergei Rudskoi, head of the Russian General Staff’s Main Operational Directorate, said.

“The combat potential of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has been considerably reduced, which … makes it possible to focus our core efforts on achieving the main goal, the liberation of Donbas.”

He said Russian forces had “practically” destroyed Ukraine’s air force and anti-aircraft defences, as well as the navy. Despite that claim, Ukrainian fighter jets have continued flying sorties from bases in western Ukraine.

Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine on February 24 in what it called a “special operation” to weaken its southern neighbour’s military capabilities and root out people it called dangerous nationalists.

The West has imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia in an effort to force it to withdraw its forces.

Rudskoi said 1,351 Russian soldiers had died in the operation and 3,825 had been injured. Russia’s military had not given an official casualty figure since March 2, when it said 498 soldiers had been killed.

Ukraine’s military has said some 15,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in combat.

Russia’s military said on Friday that it did not rule out storming Ukrainian cities that it had blockaded, and that Russia would react immediately to any attempt to close the airspace over Ukraine – something Kyiv has asked NATO to do. The military alliance has so far resisted for fear of direct confrontation between Russian and NATO forces.

Russia’s General Staff said its military operation in Ukraine would continue until Russian forces had completed the tasks that had been set, without saying what those tasks were.

Russia’s military had considered two options for its operation in Ukraine, one confined to the Donbas, and the other on the whole territory of Ukraine, before opting for the latter, Rudskoi said.

The United Kingdom said on Friday that Ukrainian troops were recapturing towns east of Kyiv, and Russian forces which had been trying to seize the capital were falling back on overextended supply lines, an indication of a shift in momentum in the fighting.

Ukrainian forces have reportedly put up strong resistance to invading Russian ones who are attempting to surround and bomb the capital.

Russian forces have repeatedly struck Kyiv, but have failed to encircle the city thus far.

Since the first days of the war, analysts suggested the Russian military may have been caught off-guard by the level of pushback by Ukrainian fighters.

The United Nations says more than 3.6 million people, mostly women and children, have already fled Ukraine, while some 10 million have been internally displaced.

Going by the voting pattern of an average Easterner on national politics, they always support other candidates from other zones in place of their own because of their love for the PDP.

This time around one of their "illustrious" sons has declared to vie for the highest office in the land, will they queue behind him, or continue to support the Fulanis, which they claim, are killing their people?

Azikiwe was betrayed.
Ojukwu was betrayed.
Ekwueme was betrayed.

Will Peter Obi face the same shame?

Atiku is finished. Aside the Afghaneasthern people online, nobody is even discussing his declaration today..

Others in attendance were Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu); Nyesom Wike (Rivers); Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta); Godwin Obaseki (Edo); Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto); Seyi Makinde (Oyo); Douye Diri (Bayelsa); Emmanuel Udom (Akwa Ibom) and Samuel Ortom (Benue).

Though there was no official statement by the Abia State Government over the visit of the Governors, it was gathered zoning would top the issues they will consider.

Politics / JUST IN: Southsouth Cannot Win PDP Presidency, Says Tambuwal by Nonpartisan1: 1:11pm On Mar 22, 2022
In what appeared a repudiation of the zoning arrangement, Sokoto Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has told the leadership and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to choose between zoning of its presidential ticket and winning the election.

The Governor, who is eyeing the presidential ticket of the PDP, also said that the Southsouth zone cannot win the presidency in 2023.

Tambuwal’s position appeared a veiled response to the insistence by Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike, that the PDP presidential ticket be zoned to the Southsouth region.

Tambuwal spoke in Abuja on Tuesday during a meeting with former principal officers of the National Assembly.

The meeting was in continuation of his consultative engagements to garner support for his aspiration.

“The zone is fully in support of the position of the Southern Governor’s forum that the next President of Nigeria must come from the Southern part of Nigeria.”

I think from the look of things, the votes Atiku or Tambuwal would get from the South will be from Ndimkpuru Mmiri people.

Asiwaju Tinubu after clinching the Ticket of the APC, will unify the South, and that will be final burial of the IPOB party called PDP.

I like the fact, that South South people have completely detatched themselves from Ndi Afghaneasthern...

Politics / Cede Ticket To The South, Or Be Ready To Lose Our Support- SS PDP Govs To PDP by Nonpartisan1: 7:52am On Mar 22, 2022
Southsouth PDP governors demand presidential ticket

•Obaseki absent at meeting •We can’t stop Atiku, Saraki, others, says party.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains divided along the North/South lines over its presidential ticket zoning.

Yesterday, the Southsouth leadership of the party made up of governors, federal lawmakers, former governors and other stakeholders demanded that the zone should be handed the ticket “in the spirit of fairness, equity and justice.”

But the party, through its Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, declared that it would not stop presidential aspirants from the North who have indicated an interest in the ticket.

At yesterday’s summit in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, the Southsouth leaders warned that the party might lose the opportunity to retake power if it failed to allow its stronghold to produce the candidate.

The communique of the summit with the theme: “Engendering a Southsouth agenda for 2023 and beyond,” read by the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Ndudi Elumelu, said: “The zone is fully in support of the position of the Southern Governor’s forum that the next President of Nigeria must come from the Southern part of Nigeria.”

Addressing the meeting earlier, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike asked the PDP to treat the Southsouth geo-political zone with fairness, justice and equity.

The governor said having consistently voted for the PDP since 1999, the party should not ignore the Southsouth’s contributions to its success.

Wike added: “The Southsouth is the pillar of the PDP. If the Southsouth is the pillar of the PDP, they must be treated with fairness, justice and equity.

“It is not only when it comes to work, it is not only when it comes to giving votes that we will all remember that the Southsouth is the pillar. When it also comes in terms of sharing, they should remember that this is the pillar of the party.”

Wike charged his colleagues, National Assembly members and other stakeholders from the zone to set aside their differences in the overall interest of the PDP.

“We have all said that Nigerians are waiting for PDP to take over in 2023. That is true. But we cannot take over if we are not united. We cannot take over if don’t work together.

“It is for us to put our house together and make Nigerians proud because if we don’t take over in 2023, Nigerians will never forgive PDP. We must take this opportunity and make Nigerians happy,” he said.

The governor said PDP had realised its past mistakes, and would not take Nigerians for granted when given another opportunity.

Wike said the Federal Government’s declaration that it had deleted Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act smacked of corruption.

However, no aspirant in the Southsouth zone, apart from Dele Momodu, has indicated interest to vie.

At the meeting were Governors Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom); Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta) and Douye Diri (Bayelsa).

Other dignitaries in attendance included PDP National Vice Chairman (Southsouth), Chief Dan Orbih; Senator George Sekibo; former Deputy House of Reps Speaker, Austin Opara; former governors Liyel Imoke (Cross River) and Celestine Omehia (Rivers).

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki was the only Southsouth PDP governor absent at the meeting. He has been having a running battle with Wike.

Yesterday, former Senate President Bukola Saraki obtained the Presidential nomination form in Abuja.

On Sunday, Saraki at a meeting with Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed in Bauchi said the three of them had decided to produce a consensus candidate from the North.

He added that they would contact former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the first aspirant to pick the party’s nomination form.

PDP spokesman Ologunagba, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said chieftains seeking to fly the flag of the party have not broken any rule.

According to him, Atiku and Saraki were exercising their fundamental human rights, which guarantee their aspiration to leadership positions in the country.

Very unfortunate, the number of illiterate Nigerians online. Tueh!

Dave Umahi's lawyers applied to withdraw a case of Stay of Execution, because they had successfully filed an appeal, which makes stay of execution mere academic..The judge acted in the same vein to struck out the case after PDP lawyers did not oppose the motion.
