Science/TechnologyUmar Yusuf Builds Modern Bicycles To Empower Citizens by Northurmate(op): 1:20am On Jul 10, 2020
- Umar Yusuf, a young man from Borno state, is making Nigeria proud by single-handedly manufacturing bicycles

- Yusuf, even without the necessary facilities, strives to mass-produce the bicycles to encourage younger Nigerians

- Nigerians are calling on the government and its agencies to find and encourage Yusuf for showing that the country has talented citizens

Umar Yusuf, a young Nigerian, has proven that it is not all about bad developments in the northern part of the country as he has brought a unique innovation to his people.

With his own hands and in a situation where he lacks the needed equipment to make his innovation easy, Yusuf is manufacturing bicycles, the types that would bring envy to industries where such are produced abroad.

He is engaged in the task in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno, a state in the northeastern part of Nigeria engulfed in insecurity.

Legit.ng understands that the young man intends to manufacture as many as possible to encourage and inspire hundreds of younger Nigerians.

Many Nigerians who commented praised Yusuf's ingenuity. They also urged the relevant government agencies both at the state and the federal levels to encourage him, especially since Nigeria now preaches focus on science and technology.

For example, Kabir Ajibola, one of those who commented, pleaded for assistance for Yusuf adding that this should even be a matter of urgency.

"I trust that state governor, Professor Engr. Babagana Umara Zulum, FNSE, Mni, (governor of Borno state) will do something, but if not we need him in Lagos state, our governor (Babajide Sanwo-Olu) will assist," he said.

In his comment, Abdulhamid Abubakar Girei urged that the young man should be connected with any of the top government officials in the state.

On his part, Chikaodi Agomuo said: "This young man needs to be empowered with more resources. More grease to your elbow. This is technology. Congratulation. I love this."

Legit.ng had also reported how Muhammad Abdul Modibbo, popularly known as Modibbo Automobile. recently did an amazing job by recreating a Volkswagen Beetle into a modern-day car that is sleek and beautiful.

The report noted that Modibbo is the founder of Gamji Automobile Nig. Ltd located at Zakibiam in Ukum local government area of Benue state.

Modibbo did not only leave Nigerians and people from other countries in shock with his work, he has succeeded in recreating the Volkswagen Beetle brand into a car every automobile lover will love to ride.

Jobs/Vacancies23,000 Vulnerable Women, Youths To Get Jobs In Kaduna by Northurmate(op): 11:50am On Jul 09, 2020
23,000 vulnerable women and youths from  23 local government areas in Kaduna State will be recruited for jobs under the Special Public Works Programme.

Arewa Trust Weekly gathered that each local government area of the state is expected to submit 1000 names which include 800 unskilled persons and 200 among the literate.

Speaking at the inauguration of a 20- member committee that will help select those to benefit from the programme, the Commissioner for Human Development and Social Services, Hajiya Hafsat Baba, said the recruitment was part of the 774,000 jobs of the federal government.

Baba said each person selected would be paid N20, 000 monthly and that the programme would only last for three months. The commissioner explained that women and youths would be given priority in the selection process because they are the most vulnerable in the society.

She tasked members of  the committee to make sure there is transparency and accountability in the whole process. Related

CrimeEl-Rufai: No More Bail For Rapists. We’re Considering Castration As Punishment by Northurmate(op): 12:08pm On Jul 07, 2020
Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, says the justice system of the state will no longer grant bail to rapists.

El-Rufai disclosed this when a group of women, advocating for justice for rape victims, staged a peaceful rally at the government house in Kaduna, on Monday.

The governor, who noted that the state already has strong legislation against rape, added that his government is already considering an amendment to the law to include the castration of persons convicted of the crime.

“I am happy that our chief judge has decided to take that very seriously,” el-Rufai said.

“We are also working on that and we know that this epidemic of rape and issues related to rape will be a thing of the past.

“It is 21 years for rape of an adult and life imprisonment for the rape (defilement) of a child.

“In addition to life imprisonment or 21 years’ imprisonment, anyone convicted of rape will have his organ surgically removed so that even after he finishes his term, he will not be able to rape anyone again.

“So long as the tool exists, there is the likelihood that he may go back to do it again.

“Most of the perpetrators are young people, so even after 21 years, they can come back and continue.”

He added that a member of the state house of assembly had already drafted a bill proposing the castration, and promised that the government would look into it.

“This measure is necessary as most cases of rape fail to get convicted because the witnesses disappear or their parents and the communities cover up due to the stigma surrounding rape,” he said.

“We have made it clear that we will protect the faces and identities of the victims and survivors of rape.

“So, there is no problem testifying in court. You will testify behind the screen, so nobody will know who you are or your face.”

The governor called on parents to instill morals in their children and give women the rights and the respect they deserve, NAN reported.

Saratu Abdulaziz, spokesperson of the group, said they were at the government house to seek the governor’s support on ending the incessant cases of rape in the state.

Abdulaziz expressed sadness over the rise in rape cases, saying it posed a serious danger to society.

“People cover up rape cases, which is not good for us. We are, therefore, calling on all victims to always voice out so that they can get the justice they deserve,” she said.

They, however, called for stiffer penalties against persons found guilty of the crime.

PoliticsEl-rufai: Architect Of Modern Kaduna State by Northurmate(op): 11:59am On Jul 07, 2020
In the First Republic, Kaduna town was capital of Northern Region. In 1967, when the regions were balkanised and 12 states were created, it still became capital of North Central State.

Kaduna still retained its position as state capital, when additional states were created in 1976. In 1987, Katsina state was carved out of Kaduna State by the Babangida military regime.

Still, Kaduna was retained as capital of ‘’new Kaduna State.’’ Significantly, there has not been any major infrastructure upgrade in Kaduna State since the 1960s, in spite of its status and population growth. For example, Kaduna state’s population was 6.1 million people, the third highest in the country, after Kano and Lagos states in the 2006 population census.

The population has already reached about 10 million, with over 4 million people living in the Kaduna urban area alone. In addition, experts predict a continuing high urbanization and urban agglomeration in Kaduna. However, the present infrastructure can not support the current population, let alone cater for the projected population.

In June 2019, about a month after getting a second term, Governor Nasir El-Rufai moved to bridge this infrastructure deficit, when he signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), for the road component of Kaduna Urban Renewal Project.

The project, according to him, is to accelerate the urbanization of Kaduna city and major towns like Zaria and Kafanchan, where more than two-third of the population lives. This project has 14 components which include roads, mass transit, housing, improved land use, street lights, parks and recreational centres.

Others are markets, neighborhood and waste management centres. Almost immediately, the contractors swung into action and the state capital has become one huge construction site.

Men and equipment have been mobilized to different sites simultaneously. While some of these roads have been completed and opened for public use, others are in different stages of completion.

On the other hand, surveys and valuation of property have reached advanced stages on the ‘’new Rabah Road’’. Indeed, the road project will start from Rabah road, at Arewa House junction, through Unguwar Kanawa, to old NDA, linking western bypass to Rigasa train station. In fact, this 14 kilometre road will have two bridges, one underpass and a flyover.

In addition, a road will be constructed from Police College Roundabout at Independence way, it will then cut through Kabala Costain and cross river Kaduna, where a bridge is already being constructed. Specifically, that road will link Kaduna North to Kaduna South local government areas, especially Aliyu Makama road, at Barnawa area. When completed, this road will reduce the volume of traffic across the stadium roundabout as it will provide an alternative route to the Stadium-Station Market-Barnawa road.

Aside road construction, there are other components of the Urban Renewal Project, like the Centenary Park, which is almost completed. In fact, it hosted the new year countdown celebrations, a night of music, food and fun, where friends, families and colleagues met to unwind amidst floodlights and fireworks. In addition, the world class Galaxy Mall on Waff road is part of the Urban Renewal Project.

Already, investors like Shoprite and a leading cinema operator like Silverbird have shown interest in the mall. Likewise, the General Hassan Usman Katsina Park is also currently undergoing total reconstruction that would elevate it to its befitting status. It is expected to house a games arcade, a zoological garden, as well as a movie theatre.

In the accompanying interviews, the Commissioners and heads of agencies that are supervising various components of the Urban Renewal Project, present the state of the projects, one year down the road.

PoliticsIsa Pantami: I Haven’t Bought A Single House Anywhere Since I Became Minister by Northurmate(op): 11:10pm On Jul 03, 2020
The minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, has denied buying houses for his wives after assumption of political office.

The minister was reacting to a saharareporters publication, alleging that he bought three houses for his three wives in highbrow areas of Abuja.

“Our attention has been drawn to the grave falsehood Published by controversial online media, Sahara Reporters against the person of Honourable Minister Dr Isa Ali Pantami. The online media, has falsely accused him of procuring three houses within the period of his assumption of office,” the minister said in a statement by his spokesperson, Uwa Suleiman.

“For the purpose of setting the records straight, the Honourable Minister has not purchased a single property anywhere In the world, in the period he has been in office as a Minister. One of the apartments in the images published is one which the Honourable Minister has occupied since January 2017, more than two years before becoming a minister, while the other one is a house he rented since 17th December 2019. Two of the images are not even known to him.

“It is worthy of note that as a serving Minister, Dr Pantami’s salaries and allowances fall below his earnings as a Professor at the International University Madinah Saudi Arabia, where he still holds the record of being the first Nigerian to lecture at that level. He only returned to Nigeria out of the zeal to contribute his quota to national development.

“Dr Pantami is one of the few Nigerians who are driven by nothing, but an unequalled sense of patriotism and selfless service as demonstrated in his act of sacrifice, to answer the call to serve his country as a sign of his patriotism and selfless service. As a successful businessman in his own right who has been comfortable in life, he has carved a niche for himself in his character, deep sense of responsibility and successful feats.

“Dr Pantami’s integrity and credibility precede him, and his fight against corruption in both official and personal capacities have become a reference point not only nationally, but globally.

“The general public is advised to ignore all attempts to slander the name and image of the Honourable Minister. In the same vein, we plead with the Nigerian media to deploy the strategies of investigative journalism and avoid false sensationalism inorder to uphold the tenets of the noble pen profession.“

CrimeBandits Kill 57 In New Katsina Attacks by Northurmate(op): 1:15pm On Jun 11, 2020
Armed gangs killed 57 people in a string of attacks on villages in northwest Nigeria, residents said on Wednesday, as security forces struggle to curb violence in the region.

Roughly 150 gunmen on motorcycles opened fire on residents before looting shops and stealing cattle in a series of assaults on Tuesday in six remote communities in Katsina state, the sources said.

“We lost a total of 57 people in the attacks across the six villages,” a local leader told AFP on condition of anonymity as he feared for his safety.

In the worst-hit village of Kadisau the assailants — dubbed “bandits” by locals — shot and killed 33 people, local resident Mohammed Salisu said.

Salisu said he escaped by abandoning his motorcycle and hiding in a ditch before crawling into a nearby house where he hid among dirty laundry for the five hours the attack and looting lasted.

“They looted every shop in the village and took away over 200 cattle,” said Salisu, who lost seven cows to the attackers.

The attackers opened fire on a football pitch where young men were watching a local match, said Sada Audi, a resident of nearby village said.

Residents said 24 more people were later killed across the villages of Hayin Kabalawa, Garke, Makera, Kwakwere and Maiganguna.

The assailants left two dozen people with bullet wounds, inhabitants said.

Nigeria’s northwest has been wracked by years of violence, involving clashes between rival communities over land, attacks by heavily armed criminal gangs and retaliation strikes from vigilante groups.

The unrest, which experts say has been spurred by overpopulation and climate change, has seen an estimated 8,000 people killed since 2011 and 200,000 flee their homes.

Nigeria’s military last month said it had launched air raids to halt a spike of attacks in President Muhammadu Buhari’s home state of Katsina.

Authorities have carried out several security operations and local peace negotiations in the region but have failed to end the bloodshed.
