England international Bukayo Saka has teamed up with a charity to fund 120 life-changing operations for children in the city of Kano, in northern Nigeria.

The 21-year-old Arsenal winger, born in London to Nigerian parents, says he wants to have a positive impact in a country which he feels "very connected to".

"I feel blessed to be in a position where I can contribute to making the children's lives easier and better through these surgeries," said Saka, who is with the Three Lions squad in Qatar ahead of the World Cup finals.

"For me, it is very important to use my abilities to have a positive impact where I can. I want to do more and more and help as many children as I can."

The operations took place in mid-October, helping children with a range of health issues including inguinal hernias, umbilical hernias and brain tumours.

Saka teamed up with BigShoe, a charity which has helped more than 1,750 children around the world in need of life-changing medical surgeries since it was founded in 2006, for the initiative.

"I have to say a big thank you to the whole BigShoe team for making this possible," Saka added in a video posted on Twitter.

"For me it is important that every child has the same opportunity to achieve their dreams.

"If I can do anything to help then I really want to do this, it was very important to me. It makes me happy when I can see the kids happy and their parents happy."

Saka was a key member of the England side which reached the final of the European Championship last year, but missed a penalty in the shoot-out defeat by Italy.

He is expected to add to his 20 caps as Gareth Southgate's squad face Iran, the United States and Wales at the World Cup in Qatar, with their Group B opener against the Iranians on Monday (13:00 GMT).

Officials from the Nigeria Football Federation had made a futile attempt to get Saka to commit the West African nation in 2019, but he opted to represent England and made his senior debut in October 2020.

The Arsenal youngster follows in the footsteps of former Nigeria international Jonathan Akpoborie, who brought doctors from Belgian non-governmental organisation reVIVE to Ozoro in Delta State last month, to help patients who could not afford treatment.

The former Stuttgart, Wolfsburg and Hansa Rostock forward hopes the doctors can return in future, following the end of their mission in late October.

"The plan is to hopefully bring the doctors back again, maybe to Lagos where I grew up or where I see there is a real desperate need for help." he told BBC Sport Africa.

Super Eagles defender Zaidu Sanusi was the hero after FC Porto snatched a late win at Benfica to clinch the Portuguese league title.

An official of the Arabic country, Major General Abdulaziz Abdullah Al Ansari, said Qatar cannot change its laws or religious beliefs just because they’re hosting the tournament.

Al Ansari is the director of the Department of International Cooperation and also doubles as the Chairman of the National Counterterrorism Committee at the Ministry of Interior.


"You want to demonstrate your view about the (LGBTQ) situation, demonstrate it in a society where it will be accepted… We cannot change the laws or our religion for a 28-day tournament," he told the Associated Press.

Al Ansari further warned LGBTQ+ groups against raising rainbow flags or demonstrating for their rights during the World Cup.

According to him, the safety of gay groups that try to demonstrate in the stands during the World Cup cannot be guaranteed.

“If he (a fan) raised the rainbow flag and I took it from him, it's not because I really want to, really, take it, to really insult him, but to protect him,” he said.

"Because if it's not me, somebody else around him might attack (him)... I cannot guarantee the behaviour of the whole people. And I will tell him: 'Please, no need to really raise that flag at this point.'"

Concerns have been raised by pro-LGBTQ+ groups since Qatar were awarded the right to host the World Cup.

Al Ansari, however, insists persons of all sexual orientations are welcome to Qatar, but cautioned against public display of actions that are not acceptable in the Arabic country.

In how many ways can a footballer make history? The most obvious is exploits on the field, winning championships, scoring goals.

There are also those who make history as cult heroes – silky skills, one-club loyalists or those who find a niche, such as a crazy way of taking a throw-in.

There are also players who make inadvertent history by being historic flops or disappointments.

With just two appearances for AC Milan after being signed aged 16, it would be simple to assign Mohammed Aliyu Datti into this category.

However, Aliyu Datti did make great history for Milan. Thanks to him, the club enjoyed its most succesful period this century, with Serie A and Champions League titles. Not through his ability on the pitch, however, but by him being sold.

Aliyu Datti's career spanned a little over a decade in Italian and Belgian football, during which time he became one of very few Nigerians to win the Scudetto. It may not have happened at all if not for the drawing of lots.

He arrived in Italy in 1997, aged just 15, to sign for Serie B club Padova. While nearly six foot tall (1.80 metres), he was of slender build, his pace and agility his greatest weapons as a striker.

However, there was an issue: Padova wanted to sign two Nigerian youngsters, Aliyu Datti and Hashimu Garba, but they only had one spot left in their non-EU player quota.

Former Padova president Cesare Vigano later revealed: "When I saw him [Aliyu] with Garba, I didn't know who to choose. They were both good, but I could have one. So, we cast lots at the dinner table in the evening, and Aliyu came out."

Garba was released to Chievo, while Aliyu Datti managed to impress in Serie B, with Padova then Ravenna - enough to be scouted by Milan.


He made his Serie A debut for Milan as a 16-year-old on January 24, 1999, in the final minutes of a tight clash against Bologna, replacing Leonardo.

Coming on with the score at 2-2, he won the free kick which Bruno N'Gotty scored for the last-gasp winner. It was a crucial victory, as Milan went on to win the 1998-99 Scudetto by a single point from Lazio.

His talent was clearly seen by Milan, and even in the very early days of the internet, hype was beginning to build around him.

In summer 1999, during a pre-season friendly against Bayern Munich, he scored and provided two assists in a 4-0 victory.

However, his second Serie A appearance came 15 months after his first, a 2-2 draw with Torino – and ultimately, it was his last.

Having been kept from the limelight, Aliyu Datti faded at Milan. He spent time on loan at Monza and Siena – scoring his first professional goals with the former – but was forgotten at San Siro.

By 2003, Aliyu Datti was 21 and, having endured an unsuccesful loan at Siena where he spent most of his time on the bench, he was becoming more of a hinderance for Milan due to taking up one of their non-EU player slots – and they had seen another 21-year-old, in Sao Paulo, who they were prepared to bet the house on.


Kaka had been spotted by Milan's scouts three years previously, and they were courting him assiduously.

Leonardo, the man Aliyu Datti had replaced on his debut, was now playing with Kaka at Sao Paulo and telling him the tales of Rossoneri greatness. Now, they wanted to bring in their man – but they had to make room for him first.

And so the old golden boy, Aliyu Datti, was sold to Standard Liege, and in came the Brazilian wonderkid.

When it became apparent within weeks of arriving that Kaka was the real deal, Milan sporting director Adriano Galliani was quick to seek praise – and relegate his former player to an anecdote.

He said: "The stars of the Kaka operation? Leonardo, [former Milan CEO Ariedo] Braida... I would add Galliani who, a month before buying Kaka, was inspired to sell Aliyu to Standard Liege to free up a place as a non-EU citizen."

Aliyu, at least, found a home in Belgian football, scoring regularly with Standard Liege and Mons, later playing in the Europa League for Zulte Waregem.

However, having begun his career so young, Aliyu found himself burnt out, and quit the professional game aged 28 to become a scout back in Nigeria.

Kaka, meanwhile, went on to inspire Milan's Serie A title triumph in 2004 and their Champions League victory in 2007, claiming the Ballon D'Or in the same year.

Milan fans should remember, however, that this would not have been possible without Mohammed Aliyu Datti.

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has converted to Islam, a UK-based sports journalist reported on Friday.

Connor Humm reported on Partey's conversion to Islam with a photo of the Ghanaian midfielder holding a Quran.

Gov. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state has assured that the 73 indigenes of the state and one from Taraba state stranded in Ukraine as a result of the war there have successfully entered Budapest, Hungary, three days after they started leaving Ukraine.

A breakdown of the number of students being evacuated by the Sokoto state government shows that 49 are those sponsored by it, out of which 47 are medical students while the remaining two are studying automobile engineering and computer science respectively.

The other 24 are Sokoto state indigenes that are self-sponsored while the remaining one is a female student who hails from Taraba state and was included among the Sokoto students.

All the students were studying in Zaporizhzhia, Kharkhiv and Dnipro cities before the outbreak of the war.

“Today, not too long ago, I spoke with them via Zoom. From what they told me, they are in good shape. They are in Budapest, Hungary,” Gov. Tambuwal told newsmen today in Sokoto.

He affirmed that the state government was in close contact with the Nigerian authorities at home in Abuja and abroad.

“We are in touch with the Federal Government, especially the Nigerian embassy there and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to see that in the shortest time possible they are returned home without any hitch, by the grace of God,” the Governor said.

In an effort to ease poverty and ensure social inclusion among citizens in Kaduna, the state government plans to spend N4 billion this year on two million vulnerable citizens.

The support will be for people from urban and rural areas who have been captured in the State Social Register.

The state commissioner of Budget and Planning, Mohammed Sani, stated this in a keynote address, titled; “The Role of Students in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” which he delivered at a summit organised by the Kaduna State Students Union (KADSU), held at the Kaduna State University on Thursday in Kaduna.

Mr Sani said the government has provided the funds in the 2022 Budget for pro-poor interventions that seek to support the vulnerable and ensure social inclusion among urban and rural poor citizens across the state.

“Today’s generation of youths is the largest the world has ever known. Young people are changing the landscape with high demand for skilled opportunities. As young people, we can define the trajectory of development.

“Young people form 80 per cent of the population in Kaduna State and, therefore, are critical in determining the future of the state and represents hope for the attainment of the SDGs.

“I also urge you the students and young people to become the voice of social transformation and active citizens, while leveraging on creative ideas and technologies and interconnectedness in addition to conducting innovative research that fast-tracks the attainment of the 17 SDGs.

Daily Trust reports that until his demise on Friday afternoon, Prof. Abubakar was a lecturer with the Department of Physics at KASU.

Confirming his death, his younger brother, Engineer Abdulrazak Abubakar, said the deceased was said to have slumped at KASU on Friday afternoon and was rushed to the school clinic where he was pronounced dead.

He said late the Professor, who has been buried according to Islamic rites, had taken his children to school on Friday morning before he returned home and got ready for work.

“There are two versions of the incident but we are not sure of the actual scenario. Some said he was walking on the staircase and slumped while others said he slumped while walking on the ground. He was rushed to the school clinic where he was pronounced dead,” he said.

Our correspondent gathered that late Prof. Abubakar received his primary education at Danja Primary School, Katsina, before he proceeded to Government Secondary School, Funtua (now Government College Funtua). His younger brother said the late professor had then studied Physics at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, before proceeding on scholarship to Ohio State University in the USA where he bagged a PhD in in Nuclear Physics.

“After he returned home, he lectured with the Department of Physics at the Bayero University, Kano and while there, he got an appointment with the Kaduna Polytechnic as the Director, College of Science and Tech. He later became the Deputy Rector Academic and later Deputy Rector Administration,” he said.

He said the deceased had served as Director of Programmed at the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and acting Executive Secretary before he was retired. “After his retirement, he was appointed Director at the Centre for Technical and Vocational Education under the NBTE and from there, moved to the Department of Physics at the Kaduna State University where he became a Professor of Renewable Energy and Molecular Physics.” The deceased is survived by his two wives, 10 children and grandchildren.

Super Eagles captain and Nigerian Muslim Celebrity Person of the Year, Ahmed Musa on Friday donated $1,500 (about N600k) to support an ongoing building project at the Central Mosque in Garoua, Cameroon, according to multiple media reports.

The Federal University, Dutse has clarified that the president of the Students Union Government, SUG, Muhammad Umar, did not attend lecture in convoy as reported on social media.

Viral photos of the SUG president have appeared online on Thursday, showing the SUG president’s Mercedes Benz car with custom number plate and security detail in black suit guarding him.

But the spokesman for the university, Abdullahi Bello, said in a statement that the students of Criminology and Security Studies were demonstrating VIP protection when the pictures were taken.

“Our attention has been drawn to a post circulating in the social media insinuating that the Students Union President of Federal University Dutse, Comrade Muhammad Mukhtar Umar attends lecture in a convoy with presumed security in tow.

“The said pictures were taken when the students of Criminology and Security Studies (CSS) Department had their week and the CSS students put to practice how to protect high profile personality by bringing the SUG president to the occasion in that manner.

“It is not possible for that number of students to abandon their lectures just to escort the SUG President to attend a class.

“The Federal University Dutse takes the issue of training students both in character and learning seriously and as such will not condone such action in the campus,” Mr Bello said.

A 25-year-old man, Prince Muhammad Kadade Suleiman has emerged as the National Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Suleiman, who hails from Kaduna State, NorthWest geopolitical zone of Nigeria, emerged through consensus on Saturday during the just concluded National Convention of the party in Abuja.

Suspected IPOB insurgents have killed a Dangote trailer driver, Saidu Alhassan and two of his assistants, Halliru Mallam and Danjuma Isari, in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State.

DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the incident happened on Wednesday while they were travelling back to their base at Obajana, Kogi State, after off-loading cement at Dangote Cement Depot in Orlu.

Sources said the assailants first ordered them to come down from the vehicle, and after discovering they were all from the North, they shot them dead and set their bodies on ablaze. Their bodies were found on Thursday near the trailer, and later evacuated to Obajana.

A teacher at the Federal Government College, Kwali, Dorcas Gibson, has beaten a student, Yahaya Nuhu, to death for failing to do his homework.

DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the school authorities are trying to cover up the killing by attributing the cause of the death to cerebral malaria while on admission at Rema Clinic in Kwali.

Already the school management had presented a death certificate to the family, showing the 13-year-old JS 2 student died of malaria.


Tragedy struck the school on Monday, August 9, when Mrs Gibson severely beat Yahaya to death with a bucket handle on his head.

When the school authorities realized that he died as a result of the beating, they quickly arranged a van to take his body to the school clinic and later Rema Clinic to cover up the murder.


DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that when the school authorities informed the family that their son died of malaria, the family took the loss in good faith without suspecting foul play.

But two days after Yahaya’s death, fresh facts that revealed the cause of Yahaya’s death emerged when a group of school mates visited the family to sympathise with them.

According to the testimony of the schoolmates of the deceased, Yahaya had told the teacher about his indisposition when she requested that homework be submitted.

Dissatisfied with the late student’s response, the teacher ordered that ordered him to go and remove weed as punishment. After completing the task, the teacher then beat him to death.

“During Period 8, Mrs Gibson entered and requested for assignment submissions. Yahaya and I failed to submit and as a result she ordered us to take out weed.

“Yahaya had informed the teacher he was ill and didn’t do the assignment. Nevertheless, she ordered us to clear the weeds, after which we returned to class.

“His head was resting on the desk due to the illness but she severely beat him on the head with a metal bucket handle until he passed out,” one of the students narrated.

DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that when the family approached the school authorities on the issue, a meeting was organised on August 11 and 13, during which the school management admitted that the late student was brutalized.


Sources at the meeting told this newspaper that the school authorities had pleaded with the parents to forgive “all that has happened as fact finding would only lead to displeasure.”

The school principal, Dahiru Shehu, did not respond to DAILY NIGERIAN inquiry on the issue.

Hoodlums have intercepted five 18-seater buses loaded with travellers at the Gada-biyu area of Jos-Zaria road in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack, which occurred at 10am on Saturday, left at least at least 22 people dead and and many others injured.

DAILY NIGERIAN correspondent gathered that the travellers were ambushed while coming back from an Islamic New Year prayers organised by a renowned cleric, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, in Bauchi State.

Witnesses said the travellers, numbering about 80, ran helter-skelter into the bush as the attackers descended on them.

Our reporter counted 22 dead bodies, deposited at the Plateau Specialist Hospital.

A survivor, Muhammad Ibrahim, said about 50 of his co-travellers had fled into the bush.

Opratives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a 36-year-old lady, Chioma Afam, for taking multiple identities and wearing hijabs to elude security search in Benue State.

She was arrested alongside another suspect, Chidinma Caleb, 22, as they attempted to smuggle a total of 296,000 tablets of Diazepam and Exol-5 from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Gombe State.

Chioma who picked up names such as Amina, Uzoamaka and Ifunanya to cover her criminal activities was arrested on Saturday, July 17.

It was learnt that Chidinma also wore hijab as a cover for her despicable activities during routine checks and profiling of inward vehicles into Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

Their vehicle which was coming from Onitsha, Anambra state was stopped along Makurdi – Alliade road while heading to Gombe State via Makurdi.

A search of their vehicle led to the discovery of 43 kilogrammes of Diazepam and 33 kilogrammes of Exol-5, both weighing 76 kilogrammes with a total of 296,000 tablets packed in four large ‘Ghana must go’ bags.

The spokesman of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Wednesday said, “Curiously, the two interstate drug traffickers had rebuffed efforts to take pictures with the exhibits without wearing their hijab.”

In another development, the Ondo State command of the NDLEA on Sunday, 18 July, intercepted one Olu Ameh, a commercial motorcycle rider with 465 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa along Ijagba-Ute road in Ose Local Government Area of the state.

The illicit substance was said to have been purchased from one Joseph in Ago-Akure, Akure North LGA and being transported to the buyer, a certain Egbonwon at Ijagba village in Ose LGA.

Please tell us about your WPOS

WPOS is a Mobile POS (point of service) System that handles sales, inventory, employee management and other customers dealings. It has also an online store that enables your customers to place an
order from anywhere.

What stands your App out among many other products?

Something that once required professional or specialized training we have made as simple as ABC. And, WPOS can be understood and accesses in four major Nigerian languages – Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and English.

What do you want to achieve with the platform?

It is just to help small businesses grow.

What would you say are the specific benefits of the platform for young local entrepreneurs?

WPOS allows entrepreneurs to manage their businesses effortlessly, and they always have access to the financial reports of their businesses in order to make good data-driven decision.

We believe that by empowering small businesses, which are the backbone of every country’s economy, we are contributing to the human quality living.

Is the platform easy to operate?

Yes; as I said, it’s as simple as ABC. If a user gets stuck there is always our support team to assist him.

How exactly does the system operate?

WPOS is a cloud-based system, users manage the service while we give support.

We access Online Payment, USSD, and Transfer.

Do you have other projects going on at the moment?

Since we have about four products in the market, we decided to focus on building and maintaining the existing projects till 2023.

The Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Maj.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya, on Monday, donated two million naira to veteran actor, Usman Baba Pategi, popularly known as Samanja Mazan Fama, in Kaduna.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the COAS made the donation when he visited the veteran actor at his residence.

NAN reports that the artist debunked rumours that made the rounds about his death on social media a few days back.

The COAS was represented by Brig.-Gen Vitalis Okoro, Chief of Staff to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division Nigerian Army, Kaduna.

Yahaya explained that he was informed of the health challenges of the veteran actor and felt obliged to lend some support.

He said Nigerian Army takes pride in identifying with notable public figures who have made positive impact on the society.

According to him, Nigerian Army was excited about how Samanja positively projected the image of the army by giving the Nigerian public, an insight into how life in army barracks looked like.

"With this important role, he was able to carve a niche for himself in the entertainment industry."

“Besides, all that Samanja had done in casting the army in a positive light, he remains an icon of the Nigerian army,“ he said.

While responding, the visibly elated Samanja, who recalled with nostalgia, his stint in the army, expressed his immense gratitude to the COAS for identifying with him.

He called on all Nigerians to be patriotic and prayed for the continued peaceful coexistence of Nigeria.

He called on youths to always engage in meaningful projects that will benefit them in life.

Also, one of his daughters, Amina Usman, described her father as a caring and loving father.

She appreciated the Nigerian Army for identifying with the Samanja family.
