Education / Comr. Zachariah, NURSS NAT’L PRESIDENT Decries Ministry Of Education Negle by Notjustzaki(m): 3:28pm On Sep 23, 2020
RIVERS STATE: Comr. Levi Zachariah George NURSS NAT’L PRESIDENT WORLD-WIDE Decries the Ministry of Education Neglect of Rivers State students in Rivers State led by Prof. Kaniye Ebeku.
15 SEPT. 2020

By Levi Zachariah George
Port Harcourt — Rivers State Students President, Comr. Levi Zachariah George, has decried the alleged neglect of the state commissioner of Education prof. Kaniye Ebeku for constantly refusing to meet with the leadership of the National Union of Rivers State Students which is the apex body of all Rivers State Students both home and diaspora.

He opined that there must be collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the union to foster a quality working relationship for the welfare of all Rivers State Students. The NURSS president stated this today after he led some Rivers State Students to the office of the Commissioner of education, Rivers State.

He said Rivers State does not need the nature of politics being played by the Commissioner at this time when students needs him must as the leader of education in the state.

According to Zachariah, "There must be a collaboration to work together as the welfare of every Rivers State Students is very significant especially in this period of the pandemic. The Rivers State Government is renovating some of our primary and secondary schools, Nabtech and Neco which is very commendable.

The Governor of Rivers State is a father that listens and we also expects that the HON. Commissioner should also pay attention to the students of Rivers State. If there is no Students, there won’t be a Ministry for education and a commissioner for education.

"This is a state that loves education and if the commissioner of Education will not take the students community very serious, then the students will suffer because for now that we don’t have an Special Adviser to the Governor on Students Affairs, the commissioner is the main channel to table Students related matters and activities.
He reminded the public that when he demanded to meet with the commissioner, he uses the pandemic as a route to escape meeting with the students president while he is having meetings with principals, Provosts’, Rectors’, Vice Chancellor and other private bodies.

"We have never criticised the state government in any form, all we need is for the students community to be involved in activities and involvement as well the welfare of the students. If this support of Rivers State Students is met, we will always and continue to commend the Commissioner of education and the Rivers State government," he said.

However, Zachariah urged the State Commissioner of education to partner with the NURSS NATIONAL to properly secure the welfare of all Rivers State Students.

Comr. Levi Zachariah George NURSS NAT’L PRESIDENT to ASUU: CALL OFF STRIKE ACTION FOR STUDENT’S SAKE

President, National Union of Rivers State Students, NURSS NAT’L, Comr. Levi Zachariah George has appealed to the striking members of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU to call off the industrial action for the sake of the students and their Children.
He also urged them to consider its psychological effect on the students and return to the negotiating table with the government to find a lasting solution to the crisis before the 21st of September, 2020.
The President made the appeal in Port Harcourt on Saturday.
Zachariah, however, lambasted the government for not honouring the agreements between it and the university teachers, which ASUU said were reached in 2009.
Recall that there had been a lingering face-off between ASUU and the Federal Government on the 2009 agreements and the IPPIS, prompting another bout of strike by the University teachers.
ASUU should use the Remaining days before 21st September to reach an agreement with the Federal government in settling the long issues that made them embark on strike.
It will be very shameful that after more than five months of Schools shut down, that ASUU up till now have not settled there challenges with the federal government.
The students community especially Rivers state Students will not welcome any ASUU strike as the pandemic has done more harm than good.
If ASUU mean well for their children (Students), then the strike should be called off before the 21st of September, 2020 which is the proposed Resuming date for all Schools. The President added.

PRESS STATEMENT:

THANK YOU, YOUR EXCELLENCY, PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI, GCFR.

The President, National Union of Rivers State Students, Zachariah Levi George has expressed deep gratitude and appreciation to President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, for the swift intervention and subsequently, ordering the Niger Delta Development Commision alias NDDC to pay all allowances owed to the students studying abroad under it's scholarship scheme.

You will recall that over 210 students were affected and nine months after resumption, the scholars spread across the UK, US, Canada, and other parts of the world are yet to receive payment for their tuition and living costs. The take-off grant of N500,000, which should have been paid before they left Nigeria in September 2019. However, this was paid eight months later in April 2020.

Zachariah said: "Loans were taken and personal accounts where emptied to raise funds from families while relying on the promises of the NDDC and the Federal Government, to make the journey to their various institutions. Some are still stranded at home, because they were not able to raise the funds for their visa applications and flight tickets."

The NURSS President added that most scholars resorted to doing menial jobs to raise funds for their programmes, stressing that the COVID-19 pandemic had blocked all avenues for income. He branded the situation as 'disheartening and a national embarrassment':

"The hardship the students encountered shouldn't have been allowed to happen in the first place and in many occasions the young lads resorted to doing menial and casual jobs, just so they can continue their studies and ensure their survival too. This situation was even made worse as the pandemic bit hard on the economies of the countries they were studying even as businesses closed down and lockdown measures were implemented.

I want to heartily thank His Excellency, President Mahummadu Buhari, GCFR, for the timely and proactive action taken towards ensuring the challenges faced by Niger Delta Students studying abroad becomes a thing of the past. I am overjoyed on the order that all outstanding payments should be made to the beneficiaries on or before Friday this week. I am calling on NDDC to ensure that the order is judiciously carried out without any further delay. I am also making my sincerest entreatment that such ugly incidence should not repeat itself in the future" He concluded.

Education / Nurss Tells Nddc To Stop The Embezzlement Of Our Funds, Students Are Stranded by Notjustzaki(m): 11:13pm On Jul 21, 2020
NATIONAL UNION OF RIVERS STATE STUDENTS'(NURSS)
20th July, 2020

PRESS RELEASE

NDDC STOP THE EMBEZZLEMENT OF OUR FUNDS, STUDENTS ARE STRANDED ABROAD, PAY US OUR GRANTS, PRESIDENT SHOULD ACT VERY FAST

The leadership of the National Union of Rivers State Students' NURSS, Worldwide have observed with utter dismay the recent unprofessional gross financial misappropriation playing out by the Interim Management Committee(IMC) of NDDC and it’s supervisory Minister, that has equally suffered scores of Nigeria students that are in the coastal line of the Niger-Delta, especially (Rivers State Students') abroad.

We write with displeasure that the NDDC that we all clamour for for, the betterment of our region and for our welfare is been played on like dice in the hands of political men with no character or less.

We as the apex student union body in Rivers State are stating our position because we are interested in seeing NDDC that works for the benefit of the Niger Delta people.

To this end, the leadership has resolved and want to state categorically after careful consideration of the manifestation into the activities of the agency by various members involved and even the very worrisome dramatic play in the recent committee investigation that took place yesterday at the National Assembly of which we witnessed.

That:

1) President Muhammadu Buhari should urgently intervene into the crisis by asking those accused of fraud to step down as practiced by norm.

2) The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio indicted in the corruption scandal rocking the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) should step down in order to give room for proper investigation and audit of the Committee activities.

3) Prof Pondie Kemebradikumo should immidiately without delay relinquish his position as the Acting MD of NDDC because he has show triats that we are not suitable with.

4) Pay Students their grants and give students their scholarship, students are stranded abroad.

5)Officers should stop the embezzlement of our funds and develop our Communities.

The state of affairs in our country and state is the way it is because reasonable men in the society and opinion leaders have decided to be quiet about things because they feel there is nothing they can do or they are no longer active in the system. And this cannot not continue again.

Education / Nurss Nat'l Leadership Supports Bill To Establish Fed. University Of Tech., Og by Notjustzaki(m): 4:56am On Jul 21, 2020
Date: Monday, 20th July, 2020

To: Senate Committee on Tertairy Education and TETFUND

From: Comr. Levi Z. George, President, National Union of Rivers State Students(NURSS), Worldwide

Re: Bill to Establish Federal University of Environmental Technology, Saakpenwa, Ogoni

Greetings Mr Chairman,
And all Distinguished Members of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFUND.
I am Comr. LEVI ZECHARIAH GEORGE, National Executive President of all Rivers State Students under the ages of National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) Worldwide.

Today stands historic for all Indigenes of Rivers State especially the Students Community. One can arguable state categorically that each time we talk about Ogoni Kingdom at a National discuss, what bears and comes to heart first is Pollution. We keep hearing about the Federal Government Budget and Oil Money vandalized by Politicians, the portion for the Indigenous people is Oil Spillage, which in turn damages our waters and lands, thus destroying our Agricultural products. I am quite sure that the bold step taken by Senator Barry Barinada Mpigi, the Distinguished Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial district would duly put smiles on the Face of our Educational Legend and Human Rights Activist, KEN SARO-WIWA, whom had rose and stood against the marginalization of his people and the deprivation of their Rights, but was gruesomely killed in his Struggle for Justice.

The establishment of a Federal University of Environmental Technology at Sapenwa, Ogoni Kingdom in Rivers State is a step in the right direction in ensuring and mandating the effectiveness of Education as against the usual Arms Struggle. Niger Delta Youths has been given Arsenals and labeled Militants in time past, but today, we are privileged to be provided with an opportunity to obtain knowledge and be called Environmental Engineers and Technicians.

The speedy establishment of this Bill would further enhance the Standard of Living of the people, and also empower them through the Technology skills and knowledge that would be acquired, as to get equip us adequately to manage our Oil Industries rather than wasting resources on Foreign Experts. The Ogoni clean-up still dangling up in the space would yet breathe, as this Bill would surely provide answers to the UNEP REPORT, as it would also enable the Clean-up of Ogoni Land to be done by Ogoni people.

Today, I would want to briefly say that on behalf of over 3Million Rivers State Students, that are ably represented by I and my delegation, we would love to say that We are solidly behind and in support of this Bill for the establishment of the Federal University of Environmental Technology.

It is a very great honour and privilege to be part of this achievement, and we would love the Committee to extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation to the Leadership of the Senate, and humbly request that the Bill be passed in a record time, as to enable Rivers State Students be availed the opportunity and right of enjoying it's dividend.

Thank you and God bless you.

Politics / NDDC Probe: No Harm Must Befall Joi Nunieh – President NURSS Backs Gov. Wike As by Notjustzaki(m): 4:57pm On Jul 16, 2020
NDDC Probe: No harm must befall Joi Nunieh – President NURSS backs Gov. Wike as he warns and Commended his efforts in protecting the life of the former MD NDDC Joi Nunieh.

The President National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) National Secretariat has supported the statement credited by the Rivers State Governor, who is the Grand Patron of the NURSS, through the HON. Commissioner For information stating that No harm must betide the former Managing director Joi Nunieh.
You will recall on Tuesday 14th July, 2020 that the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, warned that no harm must befall the former Managing Director of the Niger-Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Joi Nunieh.
Governor Wike issued this warning in a statement by his Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim in Port Harcourt.
The state government said while it commends the ongoing probe in the NDDC
, it will never support any action that will prevent or jeopardize the laudable intentions of President Muhammadu Buhari, to positively reposition the NDDC and fulfil the yearnings and aspirations of the people of the Niger Delta.
As such, the Rivers State Students president Comr. Levi Zachariah George has commended the efforts of the Rivers State Government in the protection of her children irrespective of their political affiliations. It is a laudable one to see a Government intercede on issues like this as part of her responsibilities to protect life’s and property.
“it will interest you to note that, Rivers State owes it a duty to protect her citizens from danger no matter their political affiliation and we cannot fold our hands and watch anyone harm her or any Rivers citizen.
“The Rivers State Government has viewed with concern, the recent developments at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in which the name of our daughter, Dr. Joi Nunieh, the immediate past Acting Managing Director of the Commission, has been drawn into.
“However, it is worthy of note that, the Leadership of NURSS ably Led by Comr. Levi Zachariah George, National President NURSS, wish to state categorically that we are not interested in identifying with the present unwrapping theatrical performances art in the NDDC, and we will not, however, fail to protect our beloved Mother from perceived threat or cause of danger.”
We therefore call on those involved in the ongoing systematic examination in the ]b]NDDC[/b[to ensure that Joi Nunieh does not suffer any harm in the course of their engagements.
Signed:

The president of National Union of Rivers State Students' (NURSS) National Secretariat, on behalf of the entire Rivers State students, commends the executive governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Chief Barr Gov Nyesom Ezenwo Wike - CON GSSRS POS (africa) for his recent moves geard towards protecting the good people of Rivers State.

This commendation was deemed necessary due to the recent moves made by the governor to decontaminate the state, especially our university environments and the recent free bus scheme covering Port Harcourt, Oyigbo, Eleme and Obio-Akpor Local Government Area in the bid to cushion the effect of the COVID-19.

We have understood that our university environments will also be decontaminated hence giving the students' community hope for the various institutions within the state to resume as soon as possible because the students are ready to resume.

We also appreciate the free bus scheme as we understand that these buses will be helpful as students in Rivers State will also benefit from this scheme.

We describe these moves as thoughtful and timely; only one who loves his people will think of these things.

We therefore ask everyone to take advantage of the free bus scheme and also comply with the directives given by the state government as this will help facilitate the decontamination process.

As it is said, thank you is an application for more, therefore, we considered it necessary to also bring to your notice the need for the provision of testing kits and personal protective equipments within the various universities in the state.

These kits are very necessary as they will be used by various security sectors of the universities to ascertain the health condition of both students and staff before entry into the university.

Student understanding the need for their own safety, will also have to wash their hands at various checkpoints in the University and everyone will be made to adopt the constant use of PPEs.

Education / NURSS NATIONAL PRESIDENT Comr. Levi Zachariah George, Talks on School Reopening. by Notjustzaki(m): 4:06am On Jul 10, 2020
MALAM ADAMU ADAMU
#MINISTER OF #EDUCATION

is misleading the Federal Executive Council (NEC) and Nigerians for Schools not to reopen anytime soon.

This pandemic is not going away any time soon, one size fits all solution by the Federal Government power play against WAEC is as harmful as the pandemic itself to the Students, economy and the well being of the nation.

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ARE NOT SERIOUS WITH THE EDUCATION OF HER STUDENTS.

IF EVERY OTHER THINGS CAN OPEN, LIKE
1. AIRPORTS
2. MARKETS
3. INTERSTATE BORDERS
4. FREE MOVEMENT ( TRAVELING FROM STATE TO STATE)
5. WORSHIP CENTRE'S
6. OIL COMPANIES
7. ELECTIONS AND CAMPAIGNS
E.g. EDO STATE AND OTHERS

THEN SCHOOLS CAN ALSO OPEN.
THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE PROACTIVE AND NOT GIVING THE STUDENTS FALSE HOPE.

PROVIDE THE BASIC THINGS NEEDED TO MAKE IT WORK.
E.g.
1. DISINFECTANT TUNNEL
2. FOLLOW THE LAYED DOWN POLICIES BY NCDC AND W.H.O.
