So I get back on the road and keep taking pictures while I'm driving. Please drive safely folks.
|
So I make a detour and head to one of my former secondary schools (spent a year or two here), St. Peters Unity Secondary School Akure. It's been newly renovated and looks quite different from the dilapidated school I knew.

django1: Dude, I hope you know that it was not mimiko that dualised the Oba adesida and Ondo roads. That was all agagu, mimko only beautified the roads, I'm not sure he built any dual carriage road just yet. He has done well in education and health care though.Well, for one, I know Oba Adesida was constructed in the 80's by Adekunle Ajasin and it had always been dual carriage. The dualisation from Ilesa garage to Road block, I think, is what Agagu did. I stand to be corrected though. ![]() |
Interesting taxi car colors there. Off topic, but what does "Mimiko" mean in Yoruba? The name sounds very oriental.
Yep you're right, it definitely sounds Japanese ![]() Mimiko is from Ondo Town though. There's an awful lot of dialect in Ondo state that sound quite Edoish than Yoruba. This, I think, is evidence of the mixed influence of both the Bini and Oyo empires in Ondo state. |

Approaching Isinkan Junction and Sacred Heart Cathedral

Held up in traffic
|
Still heading into City Centre: Oyemekun Road There's one of the many free orange school buses making a U-turn just ahead
|
This, according to the police sign post, is the Fanibi area. I like what Mimiko's done. As soon as it gets dark, 6pm I suppose, the street lights in the metropolis comes on. This is because they're all powered by generating sets. That means the streets are always illuminated, at least in the city centre.

I remember this road from my secondary school days, when it was just a one laner. There's ample fall-back on the shoulder of the road here, I wish the government would just extend the green grasses to this place, it'll definitely look a lot better.
|
Actually, the buildings on the right of the first picture, I believe, are some sort of factories. The area appears to be some sort of industrial area, not heavy industries though.

Abagworo: Akure=Oba Adeshida Road and environs. Sincerely as a widely travelled Nigerian, Akure is the only city outside Lagos in the Southwest with majority of its districts modern. I wonder why they've not deemed it fit to start the beautification from those rocks along Owo-Ilesha road to the red earthed entrance. That will go a long way in giving Akure a facelift to passers bye heading to Ilesha, Ife or Ibadan.Quite right indeed but I don't think Ibadan is as terrible as they make it sound. There are very nice places in Ibadan as well, only problem is the eyesore seem to overwhelm the beauties. As for beautifying the rocks along owo - Ilesa, yes, I agree it'll really give Akure a good look and passers bye a pleasant scene to feast on as they journey along. |
I've got some more pictures but they're stuck in my laptop as I've been around and about. Pics on my phone are too large and I can't be bothered at the moment to edit them. Will be posting more of the visual road trip soon. |
osaxx: u keep showing the building wit a red roof..is dat the attraction in akure,,,,hmmmmmmNope. The two posts are a response to this particular request: lari03: Please where is the new look Oba Adeshida road(if you can get a shot from the same point before the junction that leads to the high court), so we can accurately compare and contrast. |
Tony Spike: Dude, you must have been out of Akure for long! That road block has been dualised for almost 7 years now by Late Dr. Segun Agagu (in 2006, I think). I spent over 6 years in Akure and I must say that I am not too impressed with the level of work on ground. That state is an oil producing state and I can't seem to understand why the level of work on ground is not commensurate to its monthly allocation. This is my opinion though...I get your point, I really do. To be honest, I'm not really conversant with Ondo state's fiscal revenue from oil but I guess it isn't at par with the major oil producing states. Besides, there is hardly any presence of the oil majors in the state apart from Chevron which, I'm made to understand, operates on its oil fields. Notwithstanding, I reckon the government can do a lot better. |
OP is busy showing us roads, real development goes beyond the construction or renovation of roads that won't last more than 2 years. Show us capital investments, show us buildings, factories, industries, etc. When will Nigerians learn
Thanks for noticing but like I said in my first - third posts, this is not about 'development' per se. I didn't stick around long enough to get pictures of those. I made this for those who know how rusty and stagnant Akure has been over the years and so they get a 'visual road trip' through the modest changes it has experienced. Why all these bile? |
lari03: Please where is the new look Oba Adeshida road(if you can get a shot from the same point before the junction that leads to the high court), so we can accurately compare and contrast.
All you've done so far is describe entryways and exits into and out of akure. Any particular reason? I mean, i dont want to say my mind yet until you land. Not to mention, there is already an akure thread on the forum, in travel section which is where this one is supposed to be, assuming its necessary for you people to keep on fixating about the place.
@lari03: Sorry, I only got a couple of shots from my last visit to Akure, I'll see which is closest to what you want, but I doubt I got exactly that. You can check the picture below @tpia@: I don't give a rat's whisker what you think about Akure. I'm not from Ondo state, neither am I a politician but I was raised here. I've been out and back and I've seen changes. I'm a photo enthusiast and naturally I take street pictures, is it too much to share on nairaland?

And so I hit the road once more, Pleasure cruising to some slow 90's jamz ... Ladies and gentlemen, the road we cruising on now, I like to call 'The sunshine Strip'. It's a very long stretch of asphalt changing in name in various places. It's an important artery that cuts through the city of Akure. Sit back and let's ride. ![]()

ikwere militant: op am impresed iroko is w6king.I ain't started yet bruv |
Top: Backview of the first exit in and out of Akure Below: Needa get a lil something for the road ![]()
|
The turning to the right in the second picture leads to FUTA second gate (Oba kekere). I think that's a university official car right there.
|
This is the first 'Exit' in and out of Akure. I think its called "Road Block". Used to to be a one lane road but I cannot remember who dualised it. Pic 2: Behind my car is the Federal highway. Towards the back end of the car, the road leads to Owo (Benin - Owo) and towards the front end of the car, you're heading further into the SW (Akure-Ilesa-Ibadan-Lagos)

All is set and we RIDE
|
I hope we get things in perspective here, Akure is purely a civil servant state. Apart from that, the only other industry here is cocoa farming and that is mainly done in Idanre and Ondo town (please correct me if I'm wrong). Akure is small and may not be comparable to cities like Ibadan, Benin, Enugu or Calabar. These cities, I think, have sometime in the past been capitals of regional and colonial governments and as such, seen some sort of rapid commercial and human development. |
Present day Akure
|
The Akure I left behind
|
Came back to Akure and made this visual road trip to show some changes that have happened in Akure since I been away. The pictures are the pure visual changes in the city as captured by my lens. Thread is for those who know Akure and might want to see what it looks like at the moment. |
OP shoulda given an example as the topic is not too clear. But if the topic says "Three DIFFERENT Consecutive Repeated Letters", this may mean: 1. there should be three Letters 2. the three letters should be different and 3. the three letters should be repeated consecutively (following each other) |

Mondisweets: This is how i want to be wooed... Ekiti styleAll these for va-jay-jay? ![]() |
blank: They filmed it for an episode of NatGeo Wild. However, that is how they catch snakes there. I watched that particular episode.Oh! that explains a lot. I kinda recognize what good video light does to photographs. |
kinda looks staged to me. The lighting is definitely not sunlight, looks too 'hollywood good'. Besides, how'd he get a camera in that hole and the light in there is not from the burning fire neither is it on-camera flash. |
