So, I was in an uber this morning with an African American woman who picked me up on my way to work. I don't have a picture on my account and my name is Tomiwa. She said she was wondering if the person was Japanese or Indian, after I got in, I said, no, I'm just Nigerian, in a jovial manner. She then proceeded to tell me she was married to a Nigerian man who she divorced herself from 10 years back. I was curious to know where he was from and as she was trying to make out the words, she said, "oroba." Obviously, she meant "Yoruba" right? I asked if she knew what geographical part of the country he lived in growing up, I listed a few states, she couldn't confirm any since she was jogging through her memory. I proceeded to tell he that Yoruba guys have a reputation... proceeding cautiously to see if she would jump on that trajectory and finish my sentences for me. I nudged toward the stereotype having to do with being unfaithful, as I wanted to know the reason for her divorce without blatantly asking. She caught on and affirmed that he had a number of associations outside of her, and even kids in Nigeria now (not sure if before or after the relationship). She basically let me know that she must have been part of the result of the stereotype... she said he did all the right things, even to impress her family and bought her many gifts at the beginning. I spent a good amount of the rest of the ride apologizing about Yoruba men and giving explanations. Around the end of the ride, I asked where he was from again, she said it's "oroba" but that she knows that there are two. I was like two? She said, yes, there is the one that starts with the "y" and that there is the other one, that starts with an "e" or something (she wasn't sure, but knew it sounded like "oroba" ) . I aked, "Urhobo??" and she said, "yes! that's it!" lol. I basically bad-mouthed Yoruba men the whole time.. lol. |
Sue them to the ground. A gofundme should be started to help with the legal fees in the time of grieving |
