I am sorry about your relative. Coke, Pepsi and malt will do very little to help her health. She should have taken more of water, fruits and vegetables not artificial sugars like coke and Pepsi that has little or no effect on her well-being.
If I may ask what is the cause of the concurrent crisis? Identifying the cause and taking preventive measures could have gone a long way in helping her health. The causes that triggers her crisis was obviously not identified nor prevented.
SS patients can live a normal life.
Once again, I am sorry about her demise.

This SS genotype thing will not be as terrible as people claim if it's properly managed... One of my boss' is an SS and u can hardly notice... He lives his life like any other person; he doesn't fall sick... He actually did blood transfusion...

Also, my best friend in secondary school is an SS... She's very playful; she is fatter and looks healthier than me... (Although her crisis is nothing to behold)... She got pregnant and gave birth @ age 16 (normal delivery) and she's still very strong now... She's now 26 years old... She does not joke with her drugs...

AA marrying SS is the only solution to eradicate the sickle-cell menace in our society...

ask her how her health issues is,how serious? then make up your mind from what she tells you truth is that SS carriers are warrior's that fight health battles that you cant. Am 25 and have had crisis only 4 times my whole life. am a survivor dont be deprived of the best thing that can happen to you go for her and you know what? since she lives each day at a time she will love you more than any other woman would. you are AA doesnt mean you cant be hit by a car and die people will always die from one course or the other it might be an ailment or unforseen means anyway round we shall all die someday.

From a direct experience. I have a sister who is SS, she had her baby just 3weeks ago, a healthy handsome baby boy. All through her pregnacy, she had no crisis till 2wks before delivery (2days crisis) and was discharged and in 5days doctor recommend 3pants of blood else the uncertainty might happen during childbirth. Her hubby donated and had to buy the rest after 3days she went into labour buh baby grew weak as baby was too big so she under go a CS...., story short, her hubby panicked that I cried for not being around my sister. She's good buh tempered ( tempered cos she wants to feel normal and not looked upon to be weak) honestly she poses much strenght than I do and do things I run away from. She's 25+ this year. I love her and I have watched her suffering all these years. Even after this baby she had, she still in pains do all house chores, cool and take care of her baby cos her mom inlaw wasn't doing what she ought to do. We are peaceful in my family and promote peace.


In your question dear, the only hope they have to be fully happy in marital life falls on AA genes. They are strong ladies and very pretty they mostly appear to be. They never brought themselves to this world and the are good buh naturally tempered as they hate having crisis. Once they don't stress out and eat healthy they can go a year without having crisis. Mind you am advicing from experience. I fear too that she dies buh it's far from it. They want a normal life too. All my sister wants is to be loved. It's about being educated on sickle and having the person take care of herself. I communicate my sister everyday and she's doing really good. She's so strong and very intelligent that's what I love about her. If you truly love this girl, go for her buh not out of pity. They are normal human whose only fault differ is that their gene ain't as strong as ours. She's not infective. Be happy she told you she's a sickler. She's already being sincere. My parents barely know when my sister gets sick as they will panic, she contacts me and we pray over it as she takes care of herself and comes out of her crisis. You guys will be fine.

Help me tell your sister and her baby that they are blessed and I wish them long life.

The so called doctor isn't a realist in any way.
A realist should consider the pros and cons of issues and not just advertise the cons.
As a doctor , he didn't say anything optimistic like how to maintain the condition but just doom , doom and doom.

We are not saying its not possible sickle cell is a morbidity and the risk of pregnancy related incident is high plus other relating acute or chronic complications. But like i said earlier its ok to hope and believe. You always say ve seen. Lemme tell you I've had many cases of sicklers die who were apparently well and apparently maintained a healthy life style. Now to call a spade a spade if you were to Hazard a guess what the proportion of living vs dead sicklers above 45 in nigeria. A research conducted (America) places that around 50%.

The sicklers you saw that died without a cause and that lived a healthy life is just the same as the non sicklers that died. But of course , no attention is paid to those ones, its the sickler that died that receives all the negative attention.
People die everyday either sick or healthy, everything depends on God.
With the abysmall health care provided by you doctors in Nigeria, they shouldn't live more than age 5 if not for God. so I don't expect the proportion of living vs dead sixklers in Nigeria to be high nor even at average of a percent.

Madam, she can very well give birth to an healthy child. The main problem is Nigeria health system, with a good health care as obtainable in western nations, there is nothing to fear. Even in Nigeria, its possible, but we all know how bad the country's health system is.

1.I am also a realist, this a real life situation, its just common sense for two AS genotype carriers not to marry. That is a very silly situation to get into considering it is the poor kids that will live to suffer their mistake or sillyness.

2.But in this case, the OP's child won't be anything worse than AS. Its his proposed wife health condition that we can only proffer solutions to on how she can live a healthy life, of which it is a very possible thing to do or achieve.

3. who gives birth to four children or more in this present time of economic depression. With good health care, if the OP goes ahead to marry this Lady, she can give birth to 2-3 kids.
Remember, I said good health care , not the kind of health care you Nigerian doctors offer to helpless patients.
The OP can sponsor his wife to the USA or CANADA to give birth and his kid will be automatic citizens while the wife will live to tell her child bearing tale. Other medical conditions like monthly medical checkup could still be done in Nigerian hospitals.

You know they have this occasional crisis they handle always. Money has been spent for ages to sustain them (twins). They are graduates and have served. Doing the last crisis, he couldn't struggle out of it again. But his brother is still ok and strong right now. Also ss

Once again, I am sorry about the situation.
Please tell your cousin to eat fruits, vegetables and drink nothing less than 6 sathcet of water daily in addition to the usual 3 square meal.
Also, tell him to have diclofenac 50mg at hand to be used with hot water ONLY when a crisis come up unexpectedly and take him to the hospital immediately.
Sickle cell takes lots of funds to take care and knowing the right things to use or do can be the little gap between life and death.
Long life to the remaining twin I pray.
PS: if you doubt the drug i talked about, please tell him to ask his doctor.

People here can talk rubbish. See dude am a doctor and my sincere advice is no don't marry. She most likely wont live up to 40. I have never seen any ss at 40. Most even die while giving birth which is really a trying time and challenging if you want multiple kids. There are severe costly management to research on but even that is not guaranteed. Had a medical colleague who was ss and during our internship we dont let her stress herself, we did most of her calls and people were wondering why she had to read medicine and waste her years instead of a 4 year course. She died during nysc. May her soul RIP. Almost all ss crisis is an emergency and have seen many die from complications. You can even google their life expectancy which will of course be lower in Nigeria

You probably haven't met some, our family doctor is above 50 and SS. what do you say to that?

It is very nice to see you are planning your future at this present time, Since you are AA, your children's health can never be worse than AS.
I believe your fear is regarding your wife, let me tell you this, She will live long even more than 70 , all she has to do is use her drugs like proguanil and folic acid judiciously, eat vegetables and fruits, and finally drink lots of water. if she can adhere to that, there is no problem. She, you and your kids will live a good life.
I have a family member that is SS, she's married with a kid, she rarely falls sick and she's doing fine in all aspects, to cap it all, she lives in an area where the winter temperature is -35 degrees. Our family doctor is an SS too,aged 50. I have seen and i know lots of people that are SS and they are okay.I can say very little here since its a public forum.
sincerely, go ahead and marry her since she meet all your pre-requisites, you guys will be fine. she just has to do the things listed above.
