Education / Open University Graduates Can Now Go To Law School And NYSC by NwafadaMedia: 1:49pm On Mar 28, 2019
According to Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, the Vice Chancellor of the National Open University, NOUN, the university is now ready to, and will from henceforth, accept all guidelines by the Nigerian Law School, NLS, and the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

The university’s Amendment Act was recently assented to by the president of the federal republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, and this will see the graduates of the institution be able to attend the Nigerian Law School and also serve in the mandatory National Youth Service Corps for one year.

In an interview, the Vice Chancellor of the University revealed the following below.

When asked what the situation is now, he responded:

In December 2013, the president assented to the amendment of NOUN Act which meant NOUN is at a par with the universities act. The implication is that the old perception people had on NOUN that it operated on part-time basis or by correspondence is gone. Incidentally right from its inception in 1983, it had never been a part-time institution or offered knowledge by correspondence.

We used the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) or post offices to send study material to students. We have physical contact with the students through our study centres and we are a full-time university but the students come on a part-time basis so the part-time camera is from their angle not our angle. The instructions we provide are full-time.

Education / JAMB Candidates Are Afraid Of CBT; JAMB Acknowledges by NwafadaMedia: 9:38am On Mar 21, 2019
schooltalk.com.ng

For the first time in decades, authorities of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB has introduced biometric identification verification exercise as a must before entry examination centres as candidates commence the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME slated for 11 to 15 April.

Many candidates have expressed their fears of the ability of JAMB’s Staff and the efficiency of the technology for conducting the biometric exercise before the 1.99 million candidates enter examination centres. ‘’What happens if there are failures on the part of some gadgets,’’ they asked.

Biometric identification is a technology that identifies and authenticates individuals based on physical characteristics. A biometric identification system includes fingerprint identification, iris and retina, facial recognition, gait, or voice. However, the focal point for JAMB is the fingerprint.

While many stakeholders lauded the registrar’s initiative, some experts say biometric scanners don’t allow for 100% accurate scanning. They explained that when a user places their finger on the scanner, the slightest offset for a fraction of a millimetre, a change in pressure, skin damage and other circumstances always affect the resulting image. Consequently, the scans of the same finger or face will always be different.

Biometric companies are aware of these flaws in the technology and are aiming to improve identification. One of the ways adopted to deter inherent downfalls of biometrics is requiring more than one fingerprint scan to improve accuracy.

David Balaban from Infosec said the key hurdles to biometric authentication include: “Large volume of data, inaccurate matching, different people having similar biometric characteristics and high probability of compromise.

Meanwhile, in the quest of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB to allay the fears of candidates over biometric verification, has said that the captured of candidate’s ten fingers have made it impossible to record disappointment during biometric verification.

JAMB’s Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin who spoke to Vanguard explained that ordinarily,it would have captured less fingers but decided to get the whole ten fingers to serve as backup in case of failure.

To this end, he asked stakeholders not to panic over possible failure in the biometric verification, insisting that with the development, no candidate may be disallowed from examination centre, adding, it was not possible for any candidate’s whole ten fingers captured to fail the biometric verification.

According to him, the strong mechanism it has put in place, non of the 1.99 million Nigerians may have issue with biometric verification that could result to being denied entry to examination centre.

The board, reacting to Vanguard’s inquiry on the mechanism it put in place to ensure no candidate suffers unjustly by not writing the examination due to biometric verification issue, Benjamin maintained that it was practically impossible for candidates not to scale through the biometric verification, given that the ten fingerprints of all the candidates were captured.

His words: “You know, we are capturing ten fingers and we believe that ten fingers are sufficient enough for any backup in the biometric verification.”

“Just like the registrar has explained, in every ten human beings, it’s difficult to even have one that would have issue with biometrics.

“So, in every one million, you may just have less than one human being and so when you look at the whole world, you may just have maybe less than 500,000 in the whole world that may have biometric issue.

“So in Nigeria, they should be less than even a 100,000. So by the time you take one million candidates and then you examine them, you would be having less than three, four or five people that will have biometric issue.

“And given the fact that the whole ten fingers of the candidates were captured, the rate of challenge or whatever it is, would be far below what should be of concern to anybody.”

In her reaction, Suliat Elemosho who registered for the present UTME said:

‘’What if the system actually goes wrong or develop a fault at the moment of the exercise, it simply means the candidates that has not been verified won’t be able to participate in the exam.

Education / JAMB Warns Parents From Accompanying Their by NwafadaMedia: 9:10am On Mar 21, 2019
schooltalk.com.ng

As the Joint Admission Matriculation Board approaches, the board has issued a stern warning to parents of candidates sitting for the crucial tests. They are concerned with parents accompanying their wards to the Computer Based Centers as it may hinder the smooth and successful conduct of the April 11 University Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.

Read also: 6 disadvantages of going to a private university

This was revealed on Tuesday by the Lagos State JAMB Coordinator, Mr Babatunde Bamisoye, during the matriculation of new students at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Yaba.

Bamisoye said, “As far as UTME is concerned, we do not allow parents to come into the premises of the centres. My advice to parents is that they should keep off because their coming has no value, rather it may hinder the success of the exam. Parent need only to get the students prepared with transport money. Allow them to go to their centres and return home.”

The coordinator also said the board had visited the 78 accredited CBT centres and certified them technically fit to conduct the examination starting on April 11.

Emphasising the need for candidates to stay clear of the JAMB prohibited items, the Bamisoye warned, “Candidates should not bring in any of the banned equipment, like glasses or scientific wrist watches, as necessary sanctions will be given. The Registrar, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, has said that whosoever is caught will be sanctioned. Those with special cases like recommended eyeglasses are understandable, besides that, no one should come in with such things as listed.”

Politics / Atiku Is Suffering From Post-election Depression – APC Mocks Atiku by NwafadaMedia: 8:02am On Mar 21, 2019
nwafada.com

And as the battle continues, with both the All Progressive Candidate, APC and their presidential candidate, President Muhammadu and the People’s Democratic Party, PDP and their presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar all clinging hard on facts and evidences to shame and nail the other as the court case between the two parties approaches.

APC is now mocking Atiku, saying he is suffering from post-election depression after he claimed he won Buhari with 1,615,302 votes.

See this: Popular and controversial pastors wearing similar brand of belt raises suspicion; Daddy Freeze reacts

The PDP presidential candidate, in a petition filed at the election tribunal claims that data from the server of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) shows that Atiku polled a total of 18,356,732 votes to defeat Buhari who scored 16,741,430 votes.

In its response, APC’s spokesman, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu said Nigerians voted massively as a show of confidence for President Buhari.

He said, “While the APC is not oblivious of the PDP’s antics to discredit the credible presidential electoral process, acknowledged by local and international observers, we sympathise with Atiku for the crushing defeat handed him by President Buhari through the votes of Nigerians.

“After weeks of dilly-dallying, the PDP has woken up to the stark reality of its electoral defeat and decided to follow the constitutional path of filing a petition at the Election Tribunal. “However, of all the prayers of Atiku before the Election Tribunal, which are at best hollow, the most ridiculous is his claim that the server of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) indicated he ‘won’ the Presidential Election by 1.6million votes.

“A few questions would suffice: Is this phantom figure of 1.6million votes Dubai-invented? Was the result sold to Atiku by his numerous marabouts, who we understand, had assured him that the last election was a done deal for him?

“Most importantly, we note Atiku’s consistent reference to the “INEC server” as if he is the custodian of that platform. Indeed, Atiku’s constant reference to the INEC server should raise concerns as it is becoming apparent that he and the PDP are up for some dastard activities that are targeted at jeopardizing the INEC database and internal storage system.

“We recall the widespread reported cases of several programmed card readers that were retrieved from some PDP agents and their failed attempt to hack the INEC database in the lead up to the then postponed presidential election.”

You know, it’s not my habit to waylay women in streets just to make overtures to them. But, this very one I considered it foolishness of monumental proportions to have allowed her pass by without trying my luck to woo her.

I deduced that it was because she knew the magnitude of the sin of disregarding the one that wished you well, she wouldn’t have deigned to listen to me because it was obvious we belong to different social classes. She must be from a posh background while I’m diametrically opposite.

She’s extremely gorgeous and scantily dressed in swanky English wears, elegantly tall and light-skinned with and excellent, near-perfect and oval-shaped physiognomy and teenaged in her late twenties.

She wore a pair of long golden earrings that matched the colour of the grandeur and exorbitantly expensive necklace, wearing a ritzy, short-sleeved and silky T-Shirt that was bedecked with colourful flowers and too scanty to cover the golden waist-beads that dangled precariously around her broad waist. She wore dark-blue verging on black jeans dotted with some shiny stone and very tight-fitted to her body that it was even hampering her movement.

Her feet nestled in a pair of lace-ups and high-heeled costly shoes that every fashion-conscious woman dreams of making them her latest acquisition.
The wafer-thin and transparent scarf on her head hardly covered 30% of her long, blonde and lustrous hair that tumbled and cascaded onto her shoulders.

Her neatly-manicured right hand was clasping a fashionable iPhone 7 and the left one carelessly handling a small and furry purse flaunting three-set of golden rings and her soft-textured wrist nestled in a swanky and thin-laced wristwatch. Her left ear was plugged with a wire-less headphones that was connected to the phone in her hand.

She suddenly stopped and turned around to face me when she realized that I was still following her like a shadow. Her facial expression was lugubrious. I stopped walking, facing her and faking a toothless smile while deep inside my mind, I was doubting the genuineness of her being a human; the pungent scent of her perfume waxing along by the cool breeze of the evening.

“What’s up? ” She asked me with a posh accent, her soft lips immersed in a bright red lipstick wiggled as she chewed a banana-flavoured chewing- gum.

“Please, can I have some minutes out of your prized time? ” I asked, obsequiously trying to button up my open-necked ragged collared shirt.

“Just say what you want to say,” she said, glancing at her wristwatch.

“Please, don’t be offended by what I wi……..”

“Okay, okay, okay, it’s okay, financial assistance, right? ” She asked me rhetorically, then unzipped her pursed and produced some crisp foreign currency from it and then proceeded to give them to me simpering.

“No!” I rejected the offer, exuding sheer disappointment.

“C’mon, just take them. I don’t retain money if I bring them out of my purse.” she insisted.

“You interrupted me. This is not what I wanted to ask,” I explained grinning widely.

“What did you want to ask, let me know because I want to take my leave,” she said, obviously getting annoyed and still holding the money.

“Well, please can I have your phone number?” I asked smiling gently at her.

Her countenance instantly changed to sheer aggression. She gently and stylishly took her tinted-glasses off her eyes to see me clearly, and again fluttered her lush eyelashes looking down on me with sheer contempt. My sweaty face reflected in her dark-black eyeballs that wallowed in the abyss of the fish-shaped eyes.

“Oh! I see. It was the dark glasses I wore that made my vision blurry and glamorized this washed-out so-called shirt of yours. Look at the torn jeans you’re wearing. Look again at the slippers on your feet. See your untidy hair and still you have audacity to ask for my number? Are you in possession of your senses? ” She asked me, furiously pointing at the parts of my body that she mentioned.

I have never been disgraced like that by someone before and I never imagined myself being verbally humiliated by a woman.

She continued, “Like you’re feeling the pang of embarrassment likewise I’m feeling it. I would have literally fainted if I was with my friends. You would have made me an object of derision. That is why I loathe coming to filthy environments like this where illiterates, uncivilized and hopeless people like you are live.” She said fuming.

“You shouldn’t be insulting people just because I asked for your number that is not the code of the portal of heaven ” I said to her gentlemanly.

“I wouldn’t have been disgraced by poor and impecunious man like you if I came by a car,” she lamented and to my utmost surprise, I saw tears running down her cheek. ‘How did I disgraced her? Just because I requested for her phone number?’ I asked myself these questions in my mind.

“I’m not crying just because you asked for my number. You will be surprised if I tell you what made me to condescend to trek in this dirty and godforsaken part of the world and jeopardized my prized life by inhaling the contaminated air of this place,” she said, mopping away the tears that blemished her simple make-up.

She threw the money at me and turned away, heading forward.

“Sareena!” I read the name that I saw written boldly on the back of her shirt in golden colour.
“Sareena!” I shouted the name again and she quickly turned, looking at me……
