Oil prices have plunged after the United Arab Emirates said it supported increasing production. Brent crude, an international benchmark, fell more than 17% at one point after the statement by the UAE, a member of the powerful oil cartel Opec. The fall follows weeks of skyrocketing oil prices due to supply disruptions sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The rising prices have put a financial squeeze on families around the world. President Joe Biden and other leaders have pledged to try to ease the price pressures for households. Officials from the US have been in talks with oil producers aimed at boosting supply. "We favour production increases and will be encouraging Opec to consider higher production levels," Ambassador Yousuf Al Otaiba said in a statement tweeted by the UAE Embassy in Washington. Energy prices have been soaring for more than a year amid a rapid rebound in demand for oil, which had collapsed during the pandemic. Could the world survive without Russian oil and gas? Russia's invasion of Ukraine added new price pressures, as sanctions make it hard for the country - typically the producer of about 7% of global supplies - to find buyers for its oil. The US and Canada have also announced bans on Russian oil imports, while the UK said it would phase them out by the end of the year. Oil prices have jumped more than 30% since 24 Feb, touching $139 (£105) at one point this week before falling back. Oil prices settled down about 12%, at about $112 a barrel. The International Energy Agency (IEA) also recently agreed to release 60 million barrels of oil from strategic national reserves, but that move is not enough to respond to the recent run-up in prices. The agency said on Wednesday that oil reserves may be tapped further. "If there's a need, if our governments decide so, we can bring more oil to the markets, as one part of the response," said EIA chief Faith Birol. The UAE statement comes just one week after Opec rebuffed calls to raise production levels, saying it would stick to an earlier plan to gradually increase output. US markets soared, following earlier gains in Europe. The Dow closed up 2%, while the S&P 500 jumped 2.5% and the Nasdaq ended 3.5% higher https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-60680787 |
India has surpassed Nigeria as the nation with the highest number of extremely poor people. The World Poverty Clock (WPC) said this in its recent update, considering the COVID-19 pandemic economic effect. The World Poverty Clock is an online tool that monitors the progress against poverty globally and regionally and provides real-time poverty data across countries. According to its data, extremely poor people are those living on N800 per day (less than $2 per day). In 2018, Nigeria held the position with about 87 million people in extreme poverty, compared with India’s 73 million. According to the new data, about 83 million Indians have been plunged into extreme poverty in 2022, representing 6 percent of the country’s population which stands at 1.3 billion. For Nigeria, WPC said 70 million people are living in extreme poverty, representing 33 percent of Nigeria’s over 200 million people. In 2020, the National Bureau Of Statistics (NBS) said more than 80 million Nigerians live in extreme poverty (on a dollar per day). https://www.thecable.ng/india-overtakes-nigeria-as-worlds-poverty-capital |

A former Governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has told his party – the All Progressives Congress, APC, to continue to respect all court judgments. ![]() The lawmaker, however, said that where the matter has been taken to the court of appeal, it presupposes that the appealing party has obeyed the order of the lower court. Okorocha said this in reaction to the Federal High Court ruling that sacked Governor Dave Umahi as the Governor of Ebonyi State on Tuesday. DAILY POST reported that following his defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC, from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the Justice Inyang Ekwo-led Court while ruling on a case filed before by the PDP, sacked Umahi and his deputy, KelechiIgwe. The court also sacked all the state House of Assembly members, who left the PDP alongside the governor. However, in a statement on Wednesday, Okorocha said that every pronouncement of the courts should be obeyed, according to Vanguard . He said “unless such [pronouncements are] subjected to a superior court for appeal. In other words, where there is an appeal to a superior court on any matter, the lower court ceases to have authority over the matter. “Nobody in this country should say he will not obey any court order. Section 287 of our constitution makes it clear that every institution and organ of government should be obeyed but thank God for the ruling party, it has respect for the rule of law. “It is assumed that the court order no matter what form and shape it takes must be obeyed, but secondly you have an option to go to the Court of Appeal to allow the superior court suspend the judgment of the lower court.” Okorocha further explained that going to a superior to seek redress to an earlier hearing by a lower court does not mean that one has disobeyed the lower court. https://dailypost.ng/2022/03/09/umahi-apc-should-obey-court-order-okorocha/ |
