‘Anambra governorship election still winnable for PDP,’ Says guber candidate, Ozigbo The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in Anambra, Valentine Ozigbo, said on Monday the state’s governorship election is not over and remained “winnable” for him. Ozigbo, who stated this at a news conference in Awka, expressed the hope that the PDP would close the gap if electoral officials and materials were effectively deployed on time for the supplementary election slated for Tuesday in the Ihiala local government area of the state. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday night suspended the collation of results in the Anambra election after releasing results of 20 out of the 21 LGAs, except Ihiala. In the results announced by INEC, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Prof. Charles Soludo, got 103,946 votes, while Ozigbo scored 51,322. Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) candidate, Ifeanyi Ubah garnered 42,942 and 20,917 votes respectively. The PDP candidate said the Anambra election would continue beyond Tuesday provided the margin between the two leading candidates was less than the number of registered voters in places where there was proof that elections did not hold. He stressed that apart from Ihiala, which had more than 148,000 registered voters, there were places which the party had proven there was no election with over 100,000 registered voters. He said Ihiala alone could upturn the result with the ongoing awareness in the area. Ozigbo urged INEC to ensure that voters did not encounter the challenges they had on Saturday by deploying functional machines to the area. He said: “I want to assure the good people of Anambra that the election is not over, it is still winnable for us, the PDP. “The over 248,000 votes in Ihiala tomorrow and other places is enough to change the situation, I call on our people to remain hopeful and make it possible by coming out to vote. “There was no low turnout of voters on Saturday, what we had was technology-induced challenges which denied many people the opportunity to vote. “While we commend INEC for their effort to improve the electoral process with technology, we want to acknowledge the imperfection that marred the exercise. It was a big experiment we did not deserve.” https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/anambra-governorship-election-still-winnable-for-pdp-says-guber-candidate-ozigbo/ |
THE Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State Basil Ejidike has rejected the result so far released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), claiming the result was rigged and manipulated by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in connivance with the electoral body. “We want the whole world to hear our voice that we will never accept the outcome of the Anambra gubernatorial election. The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the sitting Governor, Willie Obiano, manipulated the whole electoral system and we will stand to resist it.” He alleged that APC won in all the local government areas, but INEC officers turned the result in APGA’s favour. “We virtually won in all the local governments, but Willie Obiano and Charles Soludo, through the instrumentality, corrupt-minded INEC officers, subverted the whole process in favour of APGA.” ![]() He vowed that the APC would go up to the Supreme Court to contest the result announced by INEC. So far, INEC has announced the results of 20 out of 21 local government areas, with the candidate of the APGA Charles Soludo winning 18. Elections in the remaining one local government, Ihiala, will be held on Tuesday, November 9. “But if INEC goes ahead to announce the results, we will definitely challenge the election process at the court of law, up to Supreme Court. Nobody can intimidate us,” Ejidike said. The ICIR had reported that the Anambra election result was declared inconclusive by INEC due to non-election in Ihiala Local Government Area on November 6 and 7. Returning Officer Florence Obi announced the suspension and the declaration of the result in the early hours of Monday. https://www.icirnigeria.org/anambra-election-we-will-never-accept-inec-result-apc/ |
The various security threats in Nigeria have adversely affected food security, triggering high costs of food, Minister of Defence, Maj.-Gen. Bashir Magashi, said. This, he said, poses new dimension of threats to the country. Magashi spoke at the opening of a retreat for Defence Advisers/Attaches Conference, organised by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) on Monday in Abuja. The conference/retreat was themed, ‘’Advancing Counterterrorism Efforts through Enhanced Inter-Agency Cooperation: A Whole of Government Approach.” He said the attacks by Boko Haram Terrorists and Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the North East as well as banditry and herder/militia in the North West and Central had continued to pose serious security threats to Nigeria. According to him, the littoral states in the South-South region are plagued with illegal oil bunkering, piracy and militancy while the South-East is challenged with secessionist activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He added that the South-West region is equally plagued by occasional tension between herders and farmers and secessionist agitation. “The threats currently facing Nigeria and understanding their socio-geographic context is pivotal for adapting appropriate and lasting counter-measures. “Regrettably, the prevalence of these threats has continued to endanger not only national security and economic growth, but also food security. “In particular, food security has been adversely affected with the attendant rise in the prices of food stuff across the country which portends a new dimension of threat. “This makes it imperative for the various security agencies in the country to continue to collaborate to tackle these menaces in order to create an enabling atmosphere for economic activities to thrive and to attract Foreign Direct Investment. “It also means that the security agencies must explore all avenues within their respective systems to come up with innovative ways of identifying and confronting the challenges facing us as a nation,” he said. Magashi said that the Defence Advisers/Attachés system had crucial roles to play by forging understanding and cooperation with the security and defence architectures in their respective countries of accreditation. He said the conference would provide participants the opportunity to appraise the shared vision of stemming the tide of insecurity through the integrated efforts of all government entities, the objectives of the government approach. The minister said the recent achievement of the military and security agencies who took the fight from all angles to the door steps of the adversaries leading to the surrender of over 14,000 terrorists, is reassuring. The National Security Adviser (NSA), retired Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno, said the defence Attachés/Advisers were considered as critical stakeholders in surmounting the myriad of security challenges facing Nigeria. Monguno, represented by his Principal General Staff Officer, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Ndalolo, said that Nigeria had been adopting both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches in dealing with security challenges, adding that both approaches had been yielding results. He said that the government also laid emphasis on the integrated approach, which recognised the roles of ministries, departments and agencies as well as the entire society in “tackling our security challenges.” According to him, this involves participation of critical stakeholders from different sectors of the society, such as religious actors, youths, teachers, women, civil society, media, law enforcement as well as the security and intelligence agencies. The Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), Maj.-Gen. Samuel Adebayo, said the conference is an annual event which affords DIA a medium to assiduously review the activities of all its defence sections. Adebayo said the conference was also an avenue to identify new lessons and challenges, discuss modalities for overcoming such challenges as well as restrategise for the future. According to him, this conference comes at a time when the nation is facing unusual daunting security challenges characterised by a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environment. “That is why the theme for this year’s Conference, “Advancing Counterterrorism Efforts through Enhanced Inter Agency Cooperation: A Whole of Government Approach”, was carefully chosen. “This theme will undoubtedly guide our deliberations and contributions to the current efforts of the Federal Government towards attaining an approach in our counter terrorism strategy and create an atmosphere for sustainable national security and development. “It is therefore in this regard that I urge the participants in this conference to address the issues squarely and deliberate with open minds to ensure that the objectives of the conference are achieved,” he said. The CDI noted that the Nigerian armed forces had made tremendous progress in confronting the nation’s security challenges as evident from the massive surrendering of terrorists in the North East and intensified operations against bandits in the North West and North Central regions. He said the fluid nature of the threats posed by the enemies had reinforced the need for collaborative efforts, be it government to government, within the security Services and even through foreign diplomats and Defence Attachés System (DAS). According to him, the need for a continuous reappraisal of our strategies, operational tactics and methods of intelligence gathering and sharing in order to efficiently deal with our security challenges, is therefore paramount. He said the forum would provide the opportunity to tap from the vast experiences of the participants. The Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, at the event urged attachés to use their position to support the fight against drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria. Marwa said there is a strong connection between drug and insecurity, saying that taking drugs out of the hands of peddlers would reduce the effects on security. He said the recent seizure made by the agency revealed that large quantities of drugs used by criminals are finding their ways into the country. https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2021/11/08/rising-food-prices-pose-new-threat-to-nigeria-defence-minister-magashi/ |
