SportsEdouard Mendy Criticises Media Outlets Over Use Of His Image In Stories About Be by NwaNimo1(op): 8:05pm On Nov 18, 2021
Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has criticised media outlets for mistakenly using his image in stories about Manchester City's Benjamin Mendy.

City and France full-back Benjamin Mendy has been charged with six counts of rape and one of sexual assault, and remains in custody.

Photos of Edouard Mendy and his cousin, Real Madrid's Ferland Mendy, have been used to illustrate articles.

Edouard Mendy said their use was "highly symbolic".

"Sad to see that in 2021, in France as well as in England, for some, black people have neither names nor distinct faces," the Senegal international wrote on Instagram.

"These 'mistakes' of photos appear anecdotal, but actually they are quite the opposite, they are highly symbolic.

"It's not that complicated to differentiate two faces, especially when the football jersey is of valuable help!"

In August, Benjamin Mendy was charged with four counts of rape and one of sexual assault.

Those charges related to alleged attacks on three women over the age of 16 at his home between October 2020 and August 2021.

On Wednesday, the 27-year-old appeared in court to face two further charges of rape, related to alleged attacks in Macclesfield in July and August.

He was suspended by City after being charged by police, pending an investigation.

PoliticsAdesina Adedayo: Enaira Will Help Combat Tax Evasion by NwaNimo1(op): 6:54pm On Nov 18, 2021
Speaking during a webinar organised by the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, its president, Adesina Adedayo, said that tax evasion would be reduced with the introduction of eNaira.

“With the implementation of the eNaira, it is expected that ultimately, tax evasion will be minimal as it seeks to ensure the traceability of tax assets and enforces transparency in the taxation system, thereby increasing government revenue,” Mr Adebayo said.

eNaira is a digital currency issued and regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The government promised that it would provide a fast, safe, and simple transaction to the Nigerian citizens.

CITN Taxation Faculties Coordinating Dean Dr Mark Abani said that the institute’s latest priority was to educate the public about the importance of adopting the eNaira in their transactional activities.

Dr Abani claimed that eNaira would add $29 billion to the Gross Domestic Product of Nigeria over the next decade. He underlined the government’s optimism that the adoption of the eNaira would improve commerce and financial inclusion in the country.

Bloomberg reported on Monday that 488,000 people had downloaded the eNaira wallet app. The central bank digital currency had also been used for NGN 62 million (US$150,000) in transactions, according to Osita Nwanisobi, a spokesman for the Nigerian Central Bank.

CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele said during the launch of the electronic currency that Nigeria had minted about $1.2 million eNaira.

Anambra lawmaker returns to PDP 43 days after joining APC

The lawmaker representing Ekwusigo Constituency in the Anambra House of Assembly, Onyebuchi Offor, has rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Offor, who is the House Minority Leader, joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) on October 6.

He announced his return to the PDP at Thursday’s plenary in Awka.

The lawmaker said the decision to return to PDP was taken after consultation with constituents and stakeholders from the area.

Offor said: “Two months ago, I announced my defection from PDP to APC on the floor of this House. I have tested the waters and realised that my former party PDP is better. grin

“So, I want to humbly inform this House that I’m going back to my party, the PDP.”

The lawmaker representing Idemili-South constituency, Chuka Ezewunne, welcomed Offor back to the party.

He said: “As a founding member of PDP, I know Offor well and he is a good friend too, though temptation drew him to APC. grin

“We are happy to welcome him back to PDP and we urge other members to come back home.”

BusinessOil Exploration: NNPC Gets $1.04 Billion Facility From Afreximbank by NwaNimo1(op): 9:40pm On Nov 17, 2021
The African Export-Import Bank, Afreximbank, has signed a $1.04 billion dollar facility with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, to finance oil exploration. shocked

A statement issued by the bank on Wednesday, said that the agreement was concluded in Durban, South Africa, at the second Intra-Africa Trade fair (IATF2021), which began on Monday.

According to the statement, the transaction comprised a Pre-Export/Shipment Finance Facility underpinned by a Forward Sale Agreement, FSA, and Offtake Contracts from the NNPC, acting as the borrower and seller.

“The proceeds of the facility will boost tax revenues and foreign currency receipts and create thousands of jobs in the oil and gas refining value chain.

“All by more than $2.4 billion dollars to the immediate benefit of the government, thereby improving the balance of trade and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Nigeria.”

Prof. Benedict Oramah, Afreximbank President, in explaining the bank’s decision in the context of the world’s climate change agenda, said it was a case of adopting a balanced approach.

According to him, Africa was more of a victim than a perpetrator in the emission of destructive greenhouse gases, contributing only a meagre four per cent.

He added that meanwhile a majority of the continent, ironically having been left behind development wise, still had to depend on fossil fuel for survival and should thus not bear the brunt of the punishment for the mistakes of others.

“Stopping development for parts of Africa today to achieve a clean environment for the whole world tomorrow is utterly foolhardy”, he added.

The statement said that the deal was signed by Umor Ajia, NNPC Executive Director and Group Chief Executive Officer, on behalf of NNPC.

It added that the transaction complied with Afreximbank’s mandate to promote local content in Africa’s oil and gas and other mining industries and generate foreign receivables into Africa.

The fair, which would end on Sunday, is expected to close about $40 billion dollars’ worth of deals.

Organised by Afreximbank, in collaboration with the AU and the AfCFTA secretariat, the event is being attended by over 1,100 entities exhibiting their goods and services to over 10,000 delegates, visitors and buyers from over 95 countries from the continent and beyond.

IMF addresses impact of multiple forex rate on eNaira as remittance crashes two-straight years

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) stated that Nigeria needs to unify its multiple exchange rates if its digital currency, eNaira, is to have an impact on the remittance inflow into the country.

Nigeria’s Diaspora remittance has been on the decline in the last three years, falling from $24.31 billion in 2018 to $23.81 billion in 2019, before crashing further to $17.21 billion last year.

This sum was contributed by 1.7 million Nigerians in diaspora, as of 2020 estimation by United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, with each averaging $38,428.15 within three years.

It makes Nigeria one of the top destinations for diaspora remittance, but it’s gradually losing its spot as Nigerians reduce money sent back home amid COVID-19 pandemic waves.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is hoping the eNaira will improve the remittance inflow, but IMF’s Jack Ree, an economist in the body’s African Department, said that will only happen if the regulator reduces the gap between official and parallel market exchange rates.

As of November 15, the official rate was N415.1kobo/$1, while the parallel market settled at N545/$1, a difference of N129.9kobo between the multiple forex rates.

In an email received by Ripples Nigeria, on eNaira, Ree wrote, “The eNaira is expected to lower remittance transfer costs, making it easier for the Nigerian diaspora to remit funds to Nigeria by obtaining eNaira from international money transfer operators and transferring them to recipients in Nigeria by wallet-to-wallet transfers free of charge.

“Exchange rate reforms, including a unified market-clearing rate, that reduce the gap between official and parallel market exchange rates would enhance the incentives for using eNaira wallets to send remittances.”

eNaira to push informal markets into tax net

Ree also stated that the eNaira will reduce informality in an economy driven largely by the informal markets and SMEs who account for 80 percent of employment and half of Nigeria’s GDP.

The economist stated that with eNaira being traceable unlike bitcoin and other decentralised cryptocurrency, its wide adoption will shed light on transactions in the informal sector, and help the tax agency in the country strengthen the tax base.

“Once the eNaira becomes more widespread and embedded into the economy, it may bring greater transparency to informal payments and strengthen the tax base.

“Informal and formal businesses may also benefit if eNaira adoption enhances consumption through greater financial inclusion.” The IMF member said.
