Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has criticised media outlets for mistakenly using his image in stories about Manchester City's Benjamin Mendy. City and France full-back Benjamin Mendy has been charged with six counts of rape and one of sexual assault, and remains in custody. Photos of Edouard Mendy and his cousin, Real Madrid's Ferland Mendy, have been used to illustrate articles. Edouard Mendy said their use was "highly symbolic". "Sad to see that in 2021, in France as well as in England, for some, black people have neither names nor distinct faces," the Senegal international wrote on Instagram. "These 'mistakes' of photos appear anecdotal, but actually they are quite the opposite, they are highly symbolic. "It's not that complicated to differentiate two faces, especially when the football jersey is of valuable help!" In August, Benjamin Mendy was charged with four counts of rape and one of sexual assault. Those charges related to alleged attacks on three women over the age of 16 at his home between October 2020 and August 2021. On Wednesday, the 27-year-old appeared in court to face two further charges of rape, related to alleged attacks in Macclesfield in July and August. He was suspended by City after being charged by police, pending an investigation. https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1863B/production/_121599899_microsoftteams-image-12.png https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/59334604 |

IMF addresses impact of multiple forex rate on eNaira as remittance crashes two-straight years The International Monetary Fund (IMF) stated that Nigeria needs to unify its multiple exchange rates if its digital currency, eNaira, is to have an impact on the remittance inflow into the country. Nigeria’s Diaspora remittance has been on the decline in the last three years, falling from $24.31 billion in 2018 to $23.81 billion in 2019, before crashing further to $17.21 billion last year. This sum was contributed by 1.7 million Nigerians in diaspora, as of 2020 estimation by United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, with each averaging $38,428.15 within three years. It makes Nigeria one of the top destinations for diaspora remittance, but it’s gradually losing its spot as Nigerians reduce money sent back home amid COVID-19 pandemic waves. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is hoping the eNaira will improve the remittance inflow, but IMF’s Jack Ree, an economist in the body’s African Department, said that will only happen if the regulator reduces the gap between official and parallel market exchange rates. Read also: CBN celebrates 488,000 eNaira wallet downloads from 160 countries As of November 15, the official rate was N415.1kobo/$1, while the parallel market settled at N545/$1, a difference of N129.9kobo between the multiple forex rates. In an email received by Ripples Nigeria, on eNaira, Ree wrote, “The eNaira is expected to lower remittance transfer costs, making it easier for the Nigerian diaspora to remit funds to Nigeria by obtaining eNaira from international money transfer operators and transferring them to recipients in Nigeria by wallet-to-wallet transfers free of charge. “Exchange rate reforms, including a unified market-clearing rate, that reduce the gap between official and parallel market exchange rates would enhance the incentives for using eNaira wallets to send remittances.” eNaira to push informal markets into tax net Ree also stated that the eNaira will reduce informality in an economy driven largely by the informal markets and SMEs who account for 80 percent of employment and half of Nigeria’s GDP. The economist stated that with eNaira being traceable unlike bitcoin and other decentralised cryptocurrency, its wide adoption will shed light on transactions in the informal sector, and help the tax agency in the country strengthen the tax base. “Once the eNaira becomes more widespread and embedded into the economy, it may bring greater transparency to informal payments and strengthen the tax base. “Informal and formal businesses may also benefit if eNaira adoption enhances consumption through greater financial inclusion.” The IMF member said. https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/imf-addresses-impact-of-multiple-forex-rate-on-enaira-as-remittance-crashes-two-straight-years/ |
