PoliticsTinubu Orders Ministers To Source Funds For Trans-Sahara Superhighway by NwaNimo1(op): 10:34pm On Jul 03, 2024
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the take-off of the construction of the Trans-Sahara trade route, it emerged on Wednesday.

According to him, the superhighway conceived in 1956 but abandoned holds a huge economic potential for the country when completed.

The President tasked his cabinet members to source funds for executing the project despite global economic challenges.

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu stated this at the Ministry of Works stakeholders’ meeting in Birnin-kebbi on the alignment for sections 1 & 2 of the superhighway, covering 120 KM in Sokoto and 258 KM in Kebbi, totalling 378 KM, and ending in Badagry, Lagos State.

In a statement on Wednesday by Abdullahi Ameen Mohammed, on behalf of the acting Director of Press and Public Relations of the Ministry of Works, Bagudu stated that the vision of the President was to address the reality on the ground and secure necessary funding for the benefit of Nigerians and future generations.

He said: “That is why President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed us to go and source the funds to execute our projects.

“Nigeria is the most vibrant economy with a lot of potential capacity. This project is just the tip of the iceberg. Nigerians should expect many more of such projects.”

He added that due to the courage and determination of the current administration, world leaders have acknowledged Nigeria’s boldness and readiness to assist in areas of need.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, informed the superhighway will begin from Illela in Sokoto (120 KM) through Argungu, Bunza, and Kamba, ending at Bida town in Niger State for the first and second phases.

According to Umahi, Tinubu would officially kick off the project in Kebbi State that would be of immense benefit to the people of the State and the adjoining areas, especially in agriculture, commerce, and boosting security.

“I request the people of Kebbi State and Sokoto State to support this project. Wherever there is a need to compensate the people, we will sit down with you and work it out with the local communities,” he said.

While noting that the route of the superhighway was the oldest Trans-Sahara trade route, initiated over 48 years ago, Umahi pointed out that the project was not implemented until President Tinubu’s administration.

He emphasised that the Federal government would start using concrete for road construction in the Northern region to ensure longevity for up to 100 years. cool

Umahi also highlighted that the Federal government had completed many road projects in Sokoto State and promised that all road projects in Kebbi State, particularly the Koko-Mahuta-Dabai and Malando-Wara roads, would be addressed.

He added that the President deserves commendation for reviving the project, which would benefit not only Nigerians but also neighbouring countries like Niger Republic, Bénin, and others.

The project’s stakeholders commended the President and his team for the initiative and for heeding the yearning of millions of Nigerians to resuscitate the 48-year-old Superhighway. wink

Kebbi Governor, Nasir Idris, commended Tinubu for implementing the project and kicking it off in Kebbi State.

While seeking the State’s input on the route passages, Governor Idris noted that his State government wanted the project execution to be fair and just to the communities directly benefiting from it.

“We need to give our input before the conclusion of the project so that we can do justice to our people.

“We are taking a lion’s share of the project, and we have to be just and fair to our people since the project will have direct benefits for them,” he said.

He also sought the Minister’s intervention on the Koko-Mahuta-Dabai and Malando-Wara roads, stressing that the people of these areas, including four Local Government Areas (LGAs) are suffering due to bad roads.

Sen. Adamu Aliero, representing Kebbi Central Senatorial District, expressed his full support for the project while also urging the Minister to address the Koko-Mahuta-Dabai and Malando-Wara roads.

PoliticsNigerian Govt Imposes VAT On Crypto Transactions by NwaNimo1(op): 8:07pm On Jul 03, 2024
After the clampdown on cryptocurrency platforms, the Nigerian government has introduced VAT payment on all crypto transactions. grin

KuCoin said it would comply with the directive from the federal government.

KuCoin, one of the cryptocurrency exchange platforms that deactivated P2P functions for Nigerian users and exited the Nigerian market, made this announcement on Wednesday.

“We are writing to inform you of an important regulatory update that impacts our users from the Republic of Nigeria,” KuCoin said.

The 7.5 per cent VAT charges on all accounts registered in Nigeria will take effect from July 8th.

“Starting from July 8th, 2024, we will begin collecting a Value-Added Tax (“VAT”) at a rate of 7.5 per cent on transaction fees in each trade for users whose KYC information is registered in Nigeria,” KuCoin said.

This comes months after the Nigerian government clamped down on crypto trading platforms, claiming that they aid currency speculators damaging the Nigerian naira.

PropertiesRe: Paved Compound Flooring And Flood In Lagos State by NwaNimo1(m): 7:58pm On Jul 03, 2024
newsheadlines:
Lagos state has witnessed rapid urbanization and a surge in real estate development, accompanied by a growing trend towards paving compound spaces with impermeable materials such as concrete, tiles, and asphalt. While this trend aligns with desires for modernity and ease of maintenance, it also has significant implications for water resources, especially flood in Lagos state, a city that already has a flat topography and many areas at or below sea level.

Aside from the effect of climate change, which is a leading discussion globally, there is need to examine some other causes of localized environmental challenges. Most of the built-up areas in the state are by nature, green vegetation. This vegetation helps in reducing flooding from rainfall through several mechanisms that include interception, absorption, retention and delay of surface runoff, and reducing flood peaks downstream.

Now that the whole vegetation covers that ensures the stability of the water cycle system is gone, and replaced with structures that prevent seamless percolation of rainwater through the soil layers, experiencing flooding in the city should not come as a surprise.

The shift from natural ground cover to concrete or asphalt surfaces and rooftops prevent rainwater from infiltrating into the soil. Instead of being absorbed, rainwater runs off these surfaces quickly, often into nearby drainage systems or canals. In Lagos, where drainage infrastructure is often inadequate or poorly maintained, this increased surface runoff contributing significantly to urban flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.

Not only that, the surfacing of house compounds with impermeable materials reduces the amount of water that can naturally recharge groundwater reservoirs, which a larger percentage of the citizen rely on for their water supply. Traditionally, rainwater would percolate through the soil, replenishing aquifers and maintaining a balance in the local water table. However, with more surfaces sealed off from absorption, less water infiltrates into the ground, which soon could lead to the issues of water scarcity.

The impact of these changes is particularly acute in low-lying areas and neighborhoods situated near natural water bodies or drainage channels. During the rainy season, the rapid runoff from impervious surfaces overwhelms existing drainage systems, leading to localized flooding that disrupts daily life, damages property, and poses risks to public health and safety.

Mitigation

Addressing the issue of flood in Lagos state exuberated by paved flooring and other impervious surfaces requires several approaches. Urban planning and development regulations can play a crucial role in promoting sustainable building practices that prioritize permeable materials for driveways, walkways, and other ground surfaces. Techniques such as permeable paving, green roofs, and rainwater harvesting systems, and retention ponds can also help mitigate the adverse effects of surface runoff by allowing for greater infiltration and storage of rainwater that will reduce flooding and improve groundwater recharge.

While the government has its own role, we as citizens, beyond our complaints and call to government officials, should not jettison our own through our action and inactions. We should endeavor to check some of the consequences of our desires in building houses and commit ourselves towards steps that will mitigate our suffering, especially as it regards flooding and avert environmental disaster.

PoliticsRumors Of A Political Capture by NwaNimo1(op): 9:27pm On Jul 01, 2024
Accusations of influence peddling in the heart of its presidency raise the ugly scepter of state capture in Nigeria.

At a conservative N15 trillion Naira, the 700km Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, which will run through nine states upon completion is, by some estimates, the single most expensive infrastructure project ever embarked upon by the Nigerian government. To put the cost of the project in perspective, it is more than half of the total expenditure of N27.5 trillion budgeted by the Nigerian government for fiscal year 2024.

Considering that the outsize cost of the project alone would have been ordinarily sufficient to draw attention to it, it comes as no surprise that interest in it promptly intensified following media reports of an opaque “restrictive bidding” process in which the usual public and administrative input was not sought. Nor has it helped matters that, in the aftermath of this unusually speedy approval, the contract was awarded to Hitech Construction Company Ltd., a business entity owned by Gilbert Chagoury, Lebanese Nigerian billionaire and “confidante” of President Bola Tinubu.

Various civil society groups and political opponents of the Tinubu administration have criticized both the project and the manner in which it was approved and contracted to an ally of the president. Atiku Abubakar, one time Vice-President and candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election, lamented that the project, whose terms “continue to be shrouded in secrecy,” was approved “in violation of procurement regulations” and that the apparent involvement of the president’s son, Seyi Tinubu, and his associates on the boards of companies owned by Gilbert Chagoury represented “a clear conflict of interest.” In its response, the presidency rejected accusations of conflict of interest, insisting that the presence of the president’s son on the board of the Chagoury-owned business, which it claims dates back to 2018, has nothing to do with the fact that his father is a friend to the Chagourys.

Tinubu’s association with the Chagourys first came to light back in July 2022 when what appears to be a picture of Tinubu in conference with Gilbert Chagoury and some family members at an upscale Paris restaurant circulated online, although there are indications that their relationship goes all the way back to Tinubu’s tenure as Governor of Lagos State (1999- 2007). Seyi Tinubu’s membership of the Board of Directors of the Chagoury-owned CDK Integrated Industries illustrates, conflict of interest or not, the strength of their bond. In December, Mr. Chagoury was designated as a “confidante” of the President Tinubu among the country’s delegation to that year’s 28th Conference of Parties (COP28), held in Dubai. In January, when Gilbert Chagoury turned 78, the presidency issued a congratulatory statement in which he was described as “a shining light in any room” and “compassionate, discerning, and totally reliable in every respect.” Reports in the Nigerian media suggest that Gilbert Chagoury owns the private jet in which Tinubu and his aides traveled to Pretoria last month to attend the inauguration of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Their friendship with the Nigerian first family apart, the Chagourys are not an unknown quantity in the upper echelons of Nigerian business and politics. In November 1997, a leading Nigerian newsmagazine, inspired in part by the reported intimacy between the Chagourys and the felonious regime of General Sani Abacha, published an exposé showing how, with commercial interests encompassing various sectors of the Nigerian economy, the family had apparently “hijacked” the country. In 2000, Gilbert Chagoury was convicted of money laundering and aiding a criminal organization having apparently helped members of the Abacha family to set up accounts in a Geneva, Switzerland, bank, thereby “enabling them to benefit from illegal transfers of over $120 million from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).” Chagoury, who later refunded $66 million to the Nigerian government, denied ever knowing that the money was stolen.

If the influence of the Chagourys at the summit of Nigerian political power waned during the Obasanjo era (1997- 2007), they seem to have been restored to favor briefly under Goodluck Jonathan (2010- 2015), and while the extent of their involvement with the Jonathan family remains unclear, a misplaced bet on the outcome of the 2015 presidential election (they backed the incumbent) appears to have set them up for a spell in the wilderness until the coming of Tinubu.

But it is not only in Nigeria that the Chagourys have won friends and influenced people, accruing fame and not a little amount of notoriety in the process. If the business success is reminiscent of what, historically, various Lebanese dynasties have accomplished in West Africa and beyond, it is worth underscoring that the rose of their connections is sometimes inextricable from its thorns. Thus, for every recognition (in 2017, Rwanda’s Paul Kagame bestowed his country’s highest honor on Gilbert Chagoury, citing the latter’s “exemplary service” as an “envoy of goodwill”), there is a shadow of wrongdoing, as seems to have been the case for instance when, back in 2019, Gilbert Chagoury agreed to pay the U.S. government $1.8 million to resolve “allegations that he conspired to violate federal election laws in a ‘straw donor’ scheme to route illegal foreign contributions to U.S. presidential and congressional candidates.”

While the Chagourys do loom large on the Nigerian and transnational commercial and political scenes, it should be stressed that the moral of the story is not about them specifically, nor is it about President Bola Tinubu, though it should be noted that allegations of corruption have dogged the latter as recently as March 2021 when he was the subject of an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) probe into his asset documents. Tinubu maintained that the probe was instigated by political enemies to “harass and persecute” him. Any indication that he is in the pocket of the Chagourys does not bode well for his administration, one that a cross section of Nigerians already take a dim view of.

The point, rather, is what happens when, as elite business and family ties converge, key democratic institutions are relegated to the sideline and public faith in those institutions is gradually eroded. In a nutshell, at issue is the personalization of political power insofar as it is a crucial component of the defamiliarization of democratic norms and institutions. Frustration at elite rapine already shapes deepening youth disillusionment about the possibility of democracy in Africa.

South Africa under Jacob Zuma (2009- 2018), where business ties between the president and his closest allies on the one hand, and the wealthy Gupta family on the other eventuated in the wholesale (pun unintended) “capture” of several state-owned businesses, is often invoked as the exemplar of this logic. Yet, if an influential strand of the French Africanist literature that dominated attention in African academic circles in the aughts is anything to go by, the “outsourcing” of power to the highest bidder, which is the basic principle here, is as old as the postcolonial African state.

Absent radical policy remedies, one can take solace in the recognition that state capture often unleashes forces and dynamics that state “captors” are themselves helpless to control. Recent events in South Africa seem to point the way forward.

babasolution:
Nigeria needs just enough university trained professionals in some specific fields.

At it is today Nigeria as too many university graduates with barely any companies to absorb them. This causes low renumeration because there's an oversupply.

Nigeria needs to organise it's Agriculture and encourage it's youth to go into farming, not just food crop farming but cash crop farming, they should become expert farmers.

Mining sector should also be organised by government, with lots of youths going into that sector.

Lastly, manufacturing of basic goods and raw materials should be organised by government

Others should learn other expert technical skills, especially in construction.

The rest should go into trade of common commodities like the igbos.

That is the way out from Nigerias crises,

Despite the massive number of university graduates in Nigeria, there hardly any sector working in Nigeria. That simply means that is not the way to go.

University, poly, colleges of education etc should be capped and discouraged.

Plus control of birth rates.

Agriculture, mining and manufacture of basic goods, trade and control of birth rates is the only way out for Nigeria
Those attaining cut off marks of like 34 (Nth) should not be allowed near universities!
