PoliticsTake Over Leadership Now’ – Obasanjo Tells Nigerian Youths by NwaNimo1(op): 7:34pm On Dec 01, 2023
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has told youths in the country that they will not smell the leadership of the country again if they fail to take it now.

Obasanjo advised the youths to take over the leadership roles in the country now.

Obasanjo said this during the Bridge Foundation’s Emerging Political Leaders Fellowship programme in Abuja.

“You are the leaders of today; if you don’t take it now, you will never get it. You have to be positively disruptive; don’t accept things the way they are. You need to make those who need to be made uncomfortable uncomfortable,” he said.

Obasanjo added: “Knowledge is very important—accurate knowledge. You also need the fear of God and proximity to God. When you are a leader and you do not fear God, then you are a dangerous leader.

“Wherever you may choose, leadership is very important and the principles are basically the same. A good leader must have certain characteristics. Knowledge is good, but not enough. How diligent are you? What is your level of integrity? What are the values that you cherish?”

The Kebbi government, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and the World Food Programme (WFP) are conducting the test.

The campaign is part of the Promoting Rice Fortification in Nigeria (PRiFN) project to address micronutrient deficiency.

The pupils, teachers, and parents are from 23 schools in Argungu, Kalgo and Birnin Kebbi LGA.

Oluwatosin Adu, the fortified rice cooking programme facilitator, said on Sunday in Birnin Kebbi that Kebbi was chosen for the pilot project because it was the hub of rice production in the country.

According to him, the campaign is to introduce micro-fortified rice to Nigerians and weigh its acceptability.

“After this acceptability test, we will take the feedback to the federal government,” Mr Adu explained. “It’s expected that rice millers in the state will start producing fortified rice, and it will be integrated into the school feeding programme so that school children and households can now eat fortified rice and stay healthy.”

Mr Adu stated that the cooking demonstration and sensory acceptability test were integral to the PRiFN project.

“This is by raising awareness of the benefits of fortified rice while showcasing its adaptability to cooking methods and local rice cuisines as well as its deliciousness,” he said.

GAIN coordinator Seun Elere said 23 schools were selected to participate in the cooking and eating demonstration.

“About 40 per cent are said to be suffering from anaemia in Kebbi; with the fortified rice, the number will reduce, and more people will live a healthier life,” Yusuf Abdullahi of the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, said, stressing that the introduction of fortified rice would help to tackle malnutrition and anaemia.

The wife of the Kebbi deputy governor, Maryam Umar-Tafida, commended GAIN and WFP for the initiative.

She said fortified rice contains the necessary nutrients to keep the body from diseases.

“The event provides a unique opportunity to sensitise the general public on the benefits of fortified rice and how to cook it,” she said.

The PRiFN project is an initiative of GAIN and WFP to support the federal government’s national micronutrient deficiency control strategy.

Worried by the indiscriminate borrowing by state governments from banks and the capital market, the federal government commenced a process to check such borrowing. cheesy

The Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC) has issued guidelines on conditions that a state government must meet before borrowing from any bank, in the country.

Barrister Charles Abana, the Head, Directorate of Legal, Investigation and Enforcement at the Fiscal Responsibility Commission made this known at the Growth Initiative for Fiscal Transparency (GIFT) Parley with Civil Society Partners, in Abuja, yesterday.

The Commission he said was shocked to find out that most banks in the country lure state governments into securing loans that

His words, “At the commission, we have decided to give them the template and we will go ahead to make sure that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) issues a proper guideline to banks on how to go about getting all the requirements and compliance fulfilled before lending to the states, unlike the past when they just go to the minister and the Debt Management Office (DMO).

“If we don’t put some checks on them, and make it not too easy for them to borrow, I don’t think we will come out of this debt situation.

“We had a meeting in Lagos with banks to study debt patterns, how do banks give out loans and how they recover it. At the meeting, it was revealed that as soon as state governors constitute their cabinets bank officials swoop on them with mouth-watering offers to lure them into borrowing from the banks.”

Speaking on he 2024-2026 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), Mr Abana noted that “the Country’s fiscal deficit (including project tied loans) as a percentage of GDP will keep increasing over the medium term from 3.83 percent, 3.89 percent and 3.92 percent respectively of the projected GDP.

According to him, “Borrowing will increase over the three years while foreign borrowing will increase in the first two years of the medium term.

“The proposed new borrowings are in the sums of N7.808trillion, N8.539trillion and N10.072trillion respectively for the years 2024, 2025 and 2026.”

The FRC official recommended that there should be a reduction of overhead capital and the cost of governance so as to make more resources available for developmental capital. cool

He added that each of the capital expenditures should have a proper cost benefit analysis open to the public.

In addition, recommended that more public assets be slated for privatisation so as to increase resources expected from the privatisation exercise while reducing recurrent expenditure.
