FROM PATRIOTS TO PARANOIDS: The Obidient Cult Of Hate’s Obsession with Bribe Fantasies

There was a time when some of us stood shoulder to shoulder with the Obidient Movement — not for clout, and certainly not for expectation of money — but because we genuinely believed Peter Obi represented a break from the old, rotten political order.

We spent our own time, our own resources, and our platforms to join millions of others to push this man into the national consciousness. In my case, it was millions of naira poured into campaign materials, T-shirts, town halls, and social mobilization across 22 states where Naija Lives Matter had directors appointed. I was not a politician. I did not contest for anything. No one paid me and I did not ask anyone to pay me a dime. I didn’t collect a kobo from Labour Party or Peter Obi — and never asked for one. I did it because I believed.

In fact I even attended a $1,000 and $5,000 dinner fund raiser for peter obi in Los Angeles. I travelled at my own cost, spent 2 days there and paid for the dinner too, because I believed in that man as a way forward. No jobless Obidient now accusing me of being paid by Tinubu asked me if Peter Obi had paid me to do all that .

Now fast forward to 2025.

Because I decided to leave what has now become the cult-like chorus of irrational tribal rants, and because some of us choose to see Nigeria through the lens of national interest instead of destructive opposition, or blind ethnic loyalty like many Obidients La now do, suddenly we’ve “been paid by the government”? Suddenly we are “traitors” or “sellouts”? What kind of hate-filled deranged logic is that?

Let me be clear: many of you who call yourselves leaders in this Obidient movement (and I concede there are still some good and decent people left that I respect a lot) have become paranoid, hate-filled imbeciles — unable to comprehend that someone can disagree with you on principle, not price.

When we stood with Peter Obi, even against all advise, his opponents didn’t like it, but at least the APC OR PDP didn’t invent imaginary bribe alerts to explain our convictions. They only disputed with us and dragged us on issues .

Today, becos we won’t chant your hate-filled tribal war songs, we must have been “settled”? It’s shallow thinking. It’s tragic — and frankly disgusting.

And while I still respect the very few cerebral Obidients who continue to engage this govt constructively, intelligently, and without bigotry, the rest of you have turned the movement into a toxic echo chamber of ethnic angst and unhinged accusations.

You’re not building a better Nigeria with your hate-filled bigotry. You’re building a shrine around a man — and crucifying anyone who refuses to worship at that shrine .

So let me be clear: I am not for sale and will never be. I was not paid to support Peter Obi, and I certainly don’t need to be paid to criticize him or his cultish followers now.

Some of us will continue to speak the truth, whether it aligns with your dogma or not. If you can’t handle principled dissent, that’s your personal hell — not ours.

So next time you imagine someone collected money just because they disagreed with your messiah complex, remember this: your ignorance is louder than your integrity and your default to abuse and hate speech only magnifies what we all now know about most of you: you are driven by hatred and tribalism and not by nationalistic fervor

You were accused of this 2 years ago and I dissented refusing to see most of you for what you really are because we were all desperate for good leadership in our nation after the buhari fiasco

And now that some of you have constituted yourselves as menace to society we will keep calling you out no matter the amount of bile you pour on me. Many of you do not want a progressive nigeria . You want to destroy nigeria but God won’t allow it.

"I urge people to go back and read my columns at the back of Thisday Newspaper, some years back, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, where I said that it was time to remove fuel subsidy when off-takers were rejecting crude shipped to them, saying that they do not need it.

‎“So, it requires somebody with courage to remove that subsidy, and I am in support of it. We have behaved in an irresponsible manner for a very long time. And, when you have years of irresponsible behaviour, the correction would be tough, difficult, and painful. It is the correction that we are going through now; if we don’t lose faith, we will eventually get it right".

When you talk about supporting President Tinubu, the President and I are very good friends and our friendship predates party politics and current positions; we agree on so many issues, and as it is natural, we know where we disagree...

So, talking about supporting the President, it’s a no-brainer; I will continue to support him because it is the same administration.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has said that he will continue to support President Bola Tinubu as he takes difficult but courageous and necessary economic decisions to fix Nigeria’s economy.

He added that Tinubu made a courageous decision to remove the fuel subsidy and that it ought to have been done long ago.

One of our administration's most impactful achievements is our bold tax reform agenda, which is already yielding results. By the end of 2024, our tax-to-GDP ratio rose from 10% to over 13.5%, a remarkable leap in just one year. This was not by accident. It results from deliberate improvement in our tax administration and policies designed to make our tax system fairer, more efficient, and more growth-oriented.

We are eliminating the burden of multiple taxation, making it easier for small businesses to grow and join the formal economy. The tax reforms will protect low-income households and support workers by expanding their disposable income. Essential goods and services such as food, education, and healthcare will now attract 0% VAT. Rent, public transportation, and renewable energy will be fully exempted from VAT to reduce household costs further.

We are ending the era of wasteful and opaque tax waivers. Instead, we have introduced targeted and transparent incentives supporting high-impact manufacturing, technology, and agriculture sectors. These reforms are not just about revenue but about stimulating inclusive economic growth.

There is a deliberate focus on our youth, who a friendlier tax environment for digital jobs and remote work will empower. Through export incentives, Nigerian businesses will be able to compete globally. Our National Single Window project streamlines international trade, reduces delays, and enhances Nigeria's competitiveness.

To promote fairness and accountability, we are establishing a tax ombudsman, an independent institution that will protect vulnerable taxpayers and ensure the system works for everyone, especially small businesses.

Most importantly, we are laying the foundation for a more sustainable future by introducing a new national fiscal policy. This strategic framework will guide our approach to fair taxation, responsible borrowing, and disciplined spending.

These reforms are designed to reduce the cost of living, promote economic justice, and build a business-friendly economy that attracts investment and supports every Nigerian. Together, we are creating a system where prosperity is shared, and no one is left behind.

“I want to assure you that the issues will soon be resolved, and you will come back to your offices; not just at the Executive arm, but also Legislative arm. And I also believe that the strong relationships we had before will return, and we will begin to work together again, for the good and progress of the State. What is important is for us to have a forgiving spirit.

"We are already in the peace process. I want you to thank Mr President for his timely intervention to salvage the situation, and stabilise the polity and the State. If not for Mr President, the story today would have been different.

“I don’t know how he gets his information, but the truth is that he acted with wisdom at the right time. He is the one you should thank. And let me also thank him personally for his intervention, and the personalities across the country, who moved in and appealed to him to intervene.

“We have to come down from our high horses, and subject ourselves to the peace process. And that is what we are doing. What is important is for the State to move forward. It is not about you, the interest of the State is paramount.”
