This will also bear out the importance of having a teacher who is living in the flesh. Once Jesus was gone from earth, he was unable to keep his message clear. Eventually, his followers lapsed into rituals instead of the randomly needed for spiritual consciousness. They could have their teacher, present in the Light body, as you do me. But this can only work as long as the teacher resides in the physical. Otherwise, if the teacher is gone, the physical -plane connection is broken and the student cannot verify the reality of the teachings from the Light body of the master. This is where psychic interpretation enters. The student believes he is contacting his master gone from the flesh, which he may very well be doing-but often the student is fabricating an Astral trait of himself. Without the ever upward prodding of the Living ECK Master, the student runs into introversion,a stoppage of unfoldment, seldom rising above the astral illusion he has of his master. The Living ECK Master is needed to give and verify the inner relationship that deepens and leads the student to the very heart of SUGMAD.

Around the Room

This spiritual exercise uses the imaginative body.

Take a seat in a chair. Make yourself comfortable. Then say, "I shall go for a short walk in the Soul body." Close your eyes, and look into the Spiritual Eye in a soft, sweet, gentle way. Sing HU for a minute or two, and then imagine yourself getting up.

If I were doing this contemplation, I would say, "I will get out of the chair in the Soul body and walk in front of the table. I will become very interested in the things around me, such as the color of the tablecloth, the flowers, and the vase.

"While the physical body is still in contemplation with its eyes shut, I will walk in the imaginative body to look at the curtains. I will touch the curtains and notice how nice this beautiful yellow cloth feels."

Become curious, and decide to see what's beneath the curtain. Observe the floor beneath the curtain, and pay very close attention to every little detail.

Now go over to the door, and turn the knob. Notice what the doorknob looks like. Before you open the door, say, "On the other side I'm going to see the Inner Master." Then open the door. Sure enough, he's there, and he says, "Are you ready to go yet? Let's take a walk outside."

You and Wah Z take a walk and look at the sights along the way. Strike up a conversation with Wah Z. Don't bring up heavy spiritual subjects yet; just talk about something ordinary.

Whenever you're ready to return, say, "Wah Z, why don't we go back to my room now? I'd like to see myself sitting in the chair." Walk back to your room. Throughout this experience, try to remember to sing HU or your secret word every so often.

Open your door, walk into the room, look over at your body, and say, "I'll see you later, Wah Z. I'd better sit down in the chair and get myself together again."

Then end the spiritual exercise by returning to your chair and opening your eyes.

As you practice this, Soul is becoming used to going beyond the physical body. At first it's only imagination, but the practice of this spiritual exercise will strengthen the experience. One day you will find yourself in a higher state of consciousness exactly as you had seen yourself in your imagination.

Sometimes we wonder, Why would I want to go into a higher state of awareness?
. I say,"Would you like to be a baby again? In a crib, helpless, waiting for people to feed you? . Maybe you can't stand the thought of going back to a helpless state,a precursor to where you are today. It seems impossible to run the track of time forward and see what it would be like from a Master's state of consciousness, see what your life is like today.

. The sounds you heard were replications of the sounds on the inner planes one might hear in his contemplation of the Great SUGMAD and ITS messenger the ECK. I learned long ago, when I first arrived after my training, that the priests would not tolerate any direct method of attaining freedom. Those who were mildly interested were too immersed in the dogmatic rituals established by the priests. They were too blind to understand the significance of the Sound Current. They wanted only to hear that which would suit their material needs, to make them feel that no matter how they were living, God was catering to them, and that they were doing God's bidding by acting in their own best interest. Who is man to dictate what is right or wrong to the ECK and SUGMAD? The ways of truth are hard won and only learned through a pure and willing heart. Only the strongest, those who are willing to give up all the attitudes they hold dear, will be worthy to allow truth into their lives.

Anyone who has found the ability to move into the spiritual worlds does not need what this physical plane has to offer.
. Desire is a need, and to need means that we are in the grasp of Maya, the illusionary force of the lower worlds. To need is to be dominated. This is the way of the negative power as it operates in the lower planes under the guise of mind, and this is the reason why so many are led astray and end end their lives here while still seeking, unhappy that nothing of God has come into existence.
. This makes the teachings of Eckankar meaningful to those who are caught up in the depths and imprisonment of old mental concepts, orthodox viewpoints, and intellectual barriers. If a state of free thinking and freedom of motion and viewpoint is to be obtained, there must be established some method for getting out of the body and making contact with the spiritual travelers.

For example, the Law of Reverse Effort is simply that the harder a person struggles to achieve some goal, the more difficult he will have to overcome; difficulty caused, at least in part, by the strain of his effort. "You try too hard; relax, take it easy, and try again," is an expression we hear so much in the Western world. We must make the mind one-pointed, as the Eastern adepts say, but nothing mental should be strained. We should never try to force results. We should stick to our task and finish out the race, but never knock ourselves out doing it.
. If we were riding a bicycle along a road filled with holes, trying to miss all the ruts, it is a certainty that we would hit almost every one. If we try to walk across a plank between two points, only two feet above the ground, it would be an easy feat. But if we put the plank between two windows on the fifteenth floor of two adjoining buildings and try walking it, we would find it extremely difficult to accomplish the task without falling. We would be so Conscious of falling, of failing to reach the far side, that we might not make it. This is the Law of Reverse Effort.
. This is exactly how man fails in Soul movement. He is working with mind in trying to get out of the body, and mind, which is influenced by one or all of the perversions, will keep informing him that he cannot get out of body. The harder he tries, the more firmly will Soul and body stick together, and he will fail in trying to resist the commands of mind.

The Easy Way

Just before going to bed at night concentrate your attention on the Spiritual Eye, that place between the eyebrows. Chant HU or God inwardly and silently.

Hold your attention on a black screen in the inner vision, and keep it free of any pictures if at all possible. If you need a substitute for mental pictures flashing up unwantedly, put the image of the Living ECK Master in place of them.

After a few minutes of this, you may hear a faint clicking sound in one ear or the sound of a cork popping. You will suddenly find yourself outside the physical body, looking back at it in the room. Now you are ready for a short journey in the other worlds.

There is nothing to fear, for no harm can come to you while outside the body. Although you may not know it, the Mahanta will be standing by to keep watch over your progress. After a while the Soul body will return and slide gently into the physical self with hardly more than a very light jolt.

If this is not successful the first time, try it again, for the technique works. It has worked for others.

Treatment against Fear

In order to make use of the imagination, one must become completely still. If you feel your mind and emotions churning and darting about, try this exercise to still yourself inside.

Choose a verse from The Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad, one that seems to fit your situation. The verses of The Shariyat are set in such a way that they can attune you to a higher level of consciousness. It is a good treatment against fear.

Repeat the verse over and over in your mind until you feel it become a part of yourself. You will feel your consciousness lifting and your inner worlds become still and calm. You will be able to consciously lift yourself to the point that troubles are not a part of you and you can see them objectively.

When you are able to rise above the situation into a clear area of thought—where you no longer see the parts but see the whole—then you can rearrange the parts accordingly.

People come to ECK, and people leave too. At some point they find that they've come a certain distance in their spiritual unfoldment, and they become uncomfortable. They want to go back to their original religion, or they want to go on to another faith. Others stay with ECK for years and years, just like any other organization. These are the people who are the mainstay of this path. Eckankar and the ECK teachings are alive for them.
. But the ECK teachings are not able to lift everyone all the time, because upliftment depends upon the individual's state of consciousness.
. Even people who are doing very well on the path to God sometimes forget. They forget the spiritual exercise. In other words, they forget their communion with God. They forget to consecrate themselves, to make themselves holy, either by prayer or meditation, or, in Eckankar, by contemplation. They forget, and they slide backward.
. When they slide backward beyond a certain point, they say, " The teachings of ECK are not for me. I don't know how I could have been misled all these years." They'll go running out as fast as they can and say, " I escaped!" Who are they running from? Themselves? Or life? That is what we run from whenever we're running from anything, whether we're in Eckankar or outside of Eckankar.
. ECK is the Holy Spirit, and It pervades everything with Its presence. You cannot be outside of ECK. You may not agree with the terminology we use, but ECK is the Spirit of life. You cannot be outside the Spirit of life, or you would not be living.

Try to remember that there is a sacred connection between you and God and that this connection makes the ground you walk upon holy. And, when you're on holy ground, you are in the presence of God.
. The presence of God can be anywhere. It is everywhere, not just in the church. Sometimes we get things backward: we feel that we have to go to a holy place and only there are we in the presence of God. Sometimes it's a holy mountain, or a holy building. But wherever you are is holy if you recognize at any given moment that you are in the presence of God.
. This is the reason the ECK teachings have such spiritual power. They make you, the individual, the center of the universe.
. Soul is the center of the universe, outside of God. God created you. God created me. We are of the essence of God, and therefore, no matter how imperfect our knowledge of God is, we are still holy. This imperfect knowledge of God is what makes for imperfect behavior among people, the so-called evil.

I try to speak about the different truth, the biggest of which is: You are Soul, you exist because God loves you. And an interesting corollary of that is that everyone is Soul.
. Very often the problems we have, come because the Souls God loves don't love each other.
. They are not aware of the divinity of the the other person. We can all recognize that God loves us, but we think, Surely God cannot love that scoundrel over there, that crook, that criminal; therefore, I'M justified in my anger and my judgments.
. As the spiritual leader of Eckankar, I sometimes point out the behavior of people who are acting in an unspiritual way. This is not a reflection upon their state spiritually. When you see some people who seem to be the farthest down the spiritual ladder, it's hard to imagine that some day they, too, will become God-aware individuals. "When pigs fly," you say. But someday, pigs will fly. Someday all Souls who become aware of God's love for them will also realize that God's love is for other people too.
. So for the first step in ECK , learn to love yourself as a creation of God. Then love those who are close to you. Because they are a special creation of God too. And once you've learned to love yourself and those who are close to you, then maybe you can love God.

Setting Goals

First choose something you want in your life or pick a problem that needs to be dealt with. Then set clear goals.

Second, ask yourself the following questions. Your goals must pass four tests: (1) Are they specific? (2) Are they realistic? (3) Can the results be verified? and (4) Do they give a date for completion?

Next, of course, you must begin working toward your goals in your daily life. As you do this, you can also use visualization or daydreaming to help you. First picture the goal clearly—what you want to do or be in your life. Then fill the picture with unbounded love, because love is the true creative force that removes all limitations.

Practically all famous or successful people in the world have done this. The ECK Masters have set the goal of God-Realization and becoming a Co-worker with God for the chela of ECK. Holding this picture with love can pull you through rough times.

As you unfold spiritually, you also unfold power - spiritual power - along with spiritual love. As this spiritual power comes to you, along with it comes the understanding of spiritual law that you cannot misuse this power at any time. Some people think, I like Eckankar. Now maybe I can develop my healing powers and go out and heal people. I've always wanted to be a healer. I'll just go heal people. But sometimes healing people when they haven't learned the spiritual lesson of their illness is interfering in their state of consciousness.
. This is why my role, in this mission, this time, is not to do things for people they should learn how to do for themselves.
. I try to help people find their own way to a health practitioner to overcome an illness. I try to help people go into contemplation and find out about their future themselves, by studying the ECK-Vidya, which is the ancient science of prophecy. Do this for yourself.
. My role is to help people who are ready for Mastership, not children who want to have things done for them. I help people who are striving to become self-sufficient and develop the very high spiritual state of being able to survive under any and all conditions. This includes such things as health and even wealth.

We must look upon this divine power existing in the universe as having two aspects: one, expressing itself as the Life Force; the other, as intelligence. They are inseparable from one another. Intelligence is that which is the source of consciousness.
. The Life Force is the conscious Self. What is the Life Force? That which is self-conscious is the Life Force. We often call that which is conscious by the name of intelligence. We know that intelligence and activity in the ECK power is the Life Force within man. Activity and self-consciousness are inseparable and live together in the body; when together they leave it, the body is said to be dead.
. ECK, Life Force, self-consciousness ( whatever you wish to call It) is not many, for It is one. The Life Force in you is the same as the Life Force in me and in others. As Life Force is one, so self-consciousness is one. Self-consciousness exist as the root of all knowledge.

Wherever there is life there is this ECK force existing, for life in itself is immortal and indestructible; it cannot change. Life in the abstract is always the same whether or not it is expressed outwardly. When we do not see the manifestation of life we say it is dead; but life force or God does not change, nor die. Very few people will understand the simplicity of this.

Gradually, over a number of years, people slowly wake from their spiritual sleep. As they do, they get a yearning. A yearning for something they can't quite put their finger on. They have desire for knowledge first. Behind that they find there is a yearning for understanding, then a yearning for truth.
. If they take it far enough, they'll realize that behind all their yearning is the yearning for love all this time, and these other things were just bringing them closer and closer to God's love.
. This is what we try to help people discover on their own through the teachings of ECK. I won't give someone a spiritual experience that he or she is not ready for. I can, but why? It's like giving a driver's license to a four-year-old child. You wouldn't tell a small child, "You're going to learn how to drive sometime, so here you go. Save you a couple years. Have a good time." Of course, you wouldn't do that.
. A true Master will never give someone a passport to a higher state of consciousness until that person is ready for it. A Master won't do this, anymore than a parent or state government would give a driver's license to a four-year-old child. Because the child would do a lot of damage.

People have the idea that God's love is sweet, gentle, and kind. But sometimes God's love needs to shake the sleeping Soul and awaken It because this is the lifetime that Soul has chosen to awaken to truth. And Soul is often in a very deep sleep. It needs one spiritual Jolt after another to finally become aware that there is more to life than what meets the eye.
. Some people will have an astral experience; others will have a very vivid dream experience. Others will have a vision. Some will have the higher state of Soul Travel. Others will get a prophecy, perhaps through the dream state. All these experiences are in some way a miraculous healing.
. These things are generally wake-up calls from the Mahanta. As an instrument of the Holy Spirit he is empowered to give these experiences to those Souls who are ready.

The Law of Silence is one of the laws we're familiar with in ECK. It's simply this: if there's a certain truth that is very, very important for you spiritually, keep it to yourself.
. This doesn't mean that you don't help people, that you don't talk to them about one thing or another. But if there is something that has come to you specially, a spiritual lesson that has come your way to teach you something about truth, as soon as you realize this, say nothing about it. Let the Holy Spirit play the scene out for you. Because then you'll get the benefit of the lesson. Otherwise, you waste it. It goes into the air just like empty words.
