Yes Sir, I got very valuable feedback. Thanks so much for asking. SmartToyota: |
Thanks Nurey, now I see your point. Makes sense. Thanks for going the extra mile. God bless you, you will not hustle, good things will come to you with ease. Cheers. nurey: |
Hahaha @ quote! ![]() But Nurey, did you read the advantages listed in the link and reasons why most high performance cars use disc brakes in the rear? Seems kinda plausible. I'll push my research further and see. If I feel comfy about it, I'll deal. NB In my previous car (which I had for over 5years), unless maybe I'd used to buy substandard drum brakes, a lot of the time it seemed like the front brakes were mostly left to work by themselves. And you know, when the rear brake don't function well, pressure is shifted to the front, making wear and tear even faster. Thanks though Nurey, you are a patient giver of advice. nurey: |
Wow! UceeGod, thanks for the link. These are the things my mechanic was talking about. Nurey, abeg come o. Check the link out, what do you think? UceeGod: |
; Yes Sir! nurey: |
Not really. My mechanic asserts that discs brake better than drums! And also that failure rate is higher in drums than in discs. I thought I should double check. nurey: |
Thanks for the feedback. Mine is a 2009/2010 corolla. So what do you think? nurey: |
Hello Guys, Please how safe is it to convert a car's rear brake assembly from brake drums to brake discs? I have a mechanic who is advising that I make the change! ![]() |
Are u in Abuja? feelme3: |
My experience since I returned connection to factory settings is this: 1. Without AC, fan doesn't come on. During driving, fan comes on intermittently. 2. With AC, fan stays on. That's just how the car behaves now. Please experts in the house. I hope that how it's supposed to be though. feelme3: |
Hello Namzy. You see you mentioned "slight rise in engine performance". From my post, I mentioned exactly that, except that I don't know what you would consider 'slight rise'. My engine was over advanced! Even when driving, at 80 km/h, my Rev-meter would be at 3000 Revs/min . Namzy: |
Hahahahaha! That's a possible angle I didn't even imagine, lol. Thanks for taking the time to read my post. Cheers. timifakay: |

Bro, I still dey watch my dashboard. Plus today's merciless sun, my temperature gauge dey very stable. Another thing I observed which improved, was my engine assisted braking. I generally think anything that alters the engine timing can affect many things. I still dey observe sha! thebigkendo: |
Ok guys. So today is the first time I ever did enjoy driving my car since I got it in November 2017! I want to say a Huge ‘Thank you’ to all the contributors on Nairaland who give quality advice on Car Matters. I have silently been reading, reviewing and correlating different contributions and these have helped me in recognizing anomalies that could be present in a car. Ikenna always talks about Lions, lol (Peugeot)! Mine is just a Kitty Cat! How do I know? This is because, today we helped him to become calm . . . Now he purrs very nicely, instead of the previous distressed roaring (when he is not a Lion). I drive a 2009 Corolla (US Spec). When I got it, I didn’t know the ride’s radiator fan was connected directly (that is, they by-passed the fan control module). Every time I start the vehicle, the engine would roar to life, and keep roaring (I diagnosed and got error codes saying “timing is over-advanced”). Of cos it was over advance! Unlike non-sensor cars that you could just adjust the throttle cable, tinker here and there to get the right setting, I didn’t want anyone tinkering here and there on my Corolla, lol. I asked mechanics for explanation towards possible solution till I got tired. Then I encountered Nairaland contributors (Worldwide famous cc Gazzuzz, cc Ikenna, and many other popular resourceful contributors). I learned here that by-passing the ‘fan control module’ is not a good thing to do (Meanwhile, 96.888888888% of our mechanics (As you guys funnily call them “Kazeems”, lol) believe they are saving the world when they advise motorists to trash thermostat and connect fan directly!) That direct connection had been my problem all along! At car start, my engine always struggles to attain optimum temperature for efficient performance, but the constantly running fan won’t let it! In order to counteract the fan, the engine would trigger an advanced timing in order to get the engine to heat up and attain optimum temperature. This in turn caused my car to roar, guzzle fuel and make me feel dissatisfied overall. Today, I decided I would get a good electrician to revert the status quo. Guys, the eleco who came highly recommended turned out to be a KAZEEM! He started with the whole ‘As your fan be, na the best. Naija temperature too hot!’ I tried to get him to see reason, but he argued on behalf of Africa! Two other people I met were stuck on the same false argument. Eventually, I got one to do my wish . . . And Voila, Advanced Timing is no more! Thanks so much guys, I really appreciate you guys. And please, there’s got to be a way that the sea of unqualified mechanics can be salvaged, on behalf of the unsuspecting Nigerian car owners. Maybe, if mechanic associations exists, group training can be given on workings of recent cars! Just saying. |

Please House, my 2009 corolla used up 29 litres of fuel covering 196.7 Miles (Trip A odometer reading). Would you say its fuel efficiency is good or poor. I used AC for half the time during the 29 litres usage. |
Thank you my brother. Your explanation is very helpful. Alvin007: |
Catalyst instant noodles! Very funny Thanks very much bro. If Oxygen sensor error does not show up, does it mean the catalytic converter is intact? @gazzuzz you dey? Regards. Alvin007: |
Alvin007:Lol! Bro I got codes P0014, 0016, P2757. If Oxygen sensor error does not show up, does it mean you "Indomie" is intact? (Besides, is "indomie same thing as catalytic converter?" ![]() |
can the absence of indomie trigger oxygen sensor error? |
Do you need to diagnose your vehicle here in Abuja? We can come to you, just call 08064478235. All error codes will be provided along with explanation of associated possible causes. |
I learnt Using a manual car. I drove using a manual car for about four years straight on inter-state and intra-state trips. Then, I gained possession of an automatic car. My first experience driving an automatic car (even after many years of seasoned driving) was that I was clumsy at the practice of using a single foot! I found myself constantly looking for something to do with my left leg. Sometimes i would be applying brakes using my left leg instead of my right leg! I hated the experience. But when i got the hang of it, the kind of skilled driving i do with an auto, you'd think its a manual car (if you assume only manual cars do great stuff). If you want a mad pickup speed like you're a speed demon, tryout cars with higher plugs than 4 (assuming the transmission is still good, and your tyres are adequately inflated). On a trip from Abuja to Calabar, a public transporter (modern Haice 18 seater) thought it was ok I tag along on the trip (it was my first time using the Enugu route). His concern was my ability to keep up! Guys, His passengers were his backup singers as he hailed (and my auto was only a 4 cylinder burner)! Manual cars are great, auto cars are great too. |
