Mr Aboki: Maybe if you had read the OP's post with a little more understanding, you would have realized that what he was attacking wasnt JAMB, but the kind of half-baked universities that our Nigerian Students attend abroad all in the name of going to a University.

My folks couldnt afford the tuition in the West so they sent me to Ghana where I got an education.
^^^Contradictory, are you saying you attended a backyard university in Ghana?

Akson man: Ghana has some pretty universities
too
, but many Nigerian students often go for some strange Ghanaian universities that are just 3 storey buildings along a street corner.
Akson man: "Haba, most of them failed JAMB o."
Most Nigerian Students In Ghanaian
Universities Are Serial JAMB
Failures

Mr Aboki, the above are quotes related to the poster. Clearly his main aim was to denigrate Ghana's educational system, all some of us are saying is does it make sense to sit on your qualified WAEC grades and keep writing JAMB?(which does not guarantee you vacancy if you pass) You have been in Ghana to know that public universities in Ghana are very competitiv. BTW, are you a graduate from TECH?

carr101: I took jamb once at the age of 15 and
passed with flying colors (268) but when I went to UNN to write the post ume and saw ladies take a sh*t and pee into buckets, I just gave up! I got an
admission to study medicine but turned
it down! Cos I wasn't interested in the
course and the school! ...... Also turned
down studying medicine in midrand uni
south Africa!....
I chose Ghana cos I got the course I
wanted
It had nothing to do with jamb!

Phder: Shut the fck off about "goal post" bull shit. It's lame! I am telling you that the sole purpose of jamb isn't to reduce the number of eligible candidates and you keep saying "goal post this, goal post that" Just let me be ok? Am done arguing sh..it with you.... Whatever your reasons are for studying in Ghana, I hope you enjoy it. In all sincerity I think you need help in learning how to read and understand a simple write up.
^^^ The number of wee(ganja) you smoke doesn't determine how smart you are. Its how smart you are that determines if you will smoke wee or not!

Phder: Stop proving to me that you're a fool, I get the message already. What you quoted up there is nothing but a piece of invalid data, published by bloggers with no access to real data.

I would be a lair if I am trying to convince/prove to you that the capacity of our institution can cater for present applicants, but that is not the reason why Jamb was established, you should know that Jamb has been around for decades, even when the population of applicants isn't as high as it is right now.

In UK about 10-15?% of their secondary school graduate do take a gap year (which means the volume of applicants is drastically reduced) in US not everybody gets admitted after high school (Not because they don't have enough schools, it maybe due to personal reason e.t.c.). Check your statistics from popular universities and look at the number of applicants every year compared to successful applicants. You can't admit everybody when the facilities can't cater for everybody.

I am a little bit tired right now, so I don't have time to discuss this trash with you, I'd just like you to know that the sole purpose of Jamb is not to reduce the number of eligible candidate.
Sorry, this ^^^post just reeks of ignorance and an attempt to quickly shift goal post after getting SCHOOLED on your ignorance here.
Heck, what am I saying? You didn't just
shift the goal post... You've put the goal
post on WHEELS to be shifted at any
time!

I think at this point I will have to draw the curtain on this show. Clearly, People have seen through what the Poster hoped to achieve and they are not buying it.

Phder: Apologetic behaviour? Comprehension
deficiency? I guess you don't know the
meaning of those words. Go back and
read your comment that was quoted.
You said "Nigeria colleges can't admit
the total number of student writing
WAEC every year, hence they
introduced UTME to reduce the number
of eligible candidates" And I said you're
wrong, citing US as an example, that
despite having thousands of tertiary
institutions, applicants are also expected
to write a standardized test.
My conclusion is this; it's either your
finger types faster than your brain
thinks, or you choose not to use the
white and grey matter effectively.

drexx: Guy I have to state here that your mental capacity is at the lowest imaginable point or probably non existent. How dare you mention University of Benin? There is no way you can get admission into that school with such a low IQ..... If there is a school that values merit, it's university of Benin. I knew nobody there when I got admission, first list, first choice course. First time of going to Benin was for Pume... I go to Ghana often and as someone rightly pointed if you are not in legon, knust, University of cape coast and 2 more government universities I can't recall their names now, then you are crab ...... Valley View is the best private university in Ghana but it is miles behind covenant University in terms of infrastructure and facilities. I have close relations in Ghana, I fly there often. I know Ghana in and out. Let me also quickly point out that the top good Ghanaian universities are very competitive. Ghanaians need to make 5 A's in waec to stand a chance to get admission in schools like legon, knust and the lots ... Anyway you look at it, [s]the private universities that Nigerians flock to are alternatives for dull Ghanaians[/s]. So if you failed jamb, you can join your fellow dullards in Ghana
I agree with the bolded points, but with regards to Ghanaian dullards going into private institutions, that sweeping allegation is false. The reverse of not gaining admission into a government subsidised public university means you will have to choose one of the private universities (Ashesi, Central, Valley View) and cough up not less than $1000 per semester or rewrite your WAEC to better your grade and reapply to gain admission into one of the public institutions.

atlwireles: Thanks for trying to educate some goners here. Most Nigerians don't understand we have an access problem in this country. Too many students writing jamb for 20% spaces every year. That's why I have always supported private university. We need more of them not less. Ghana is smart to see the economic impact of Nigerian students and tap into it.
The Federal Public universities are heavily subsidised by government, hence the first choice for qualified Ghanaian and foreign students, hence the passing grades keep increasing to meet the challenge of vacancy.
Starting from this year, Private Universities have started paying Tax.

Im talking about Medicine.

My friends (3 of them) who were studying Medicine in University of Cape Coast had to leave for Europe after they found out that UCC's medical dept was not accredited. This was in 2004- 2005.

I dont need you to validate my claims as I know this for a fact. Maybe they have fixed it now, but that was what it was then. Dont forget that UCC is the weakest link in the Chain of top Universities in Ghana.

Plus, Federal or whatever, you get the point I was making.
MR Aboki, the School of Medical Sciences graduated its first batch of medical students on the 31st August, 2013. I guess at that time, they wanted to take advantage of them beign a state institution to get a preferential tratment from another state institution(National Accreditation Board), but they are not a fully fledged medical institution.
Every Ghanaian or foreign student knows that University of Ghana - Legon, KNUST - Kumasi & University of Cape Coast are all top tier competitive universities in Ghana.
Indeed UCC's grading system is the highest in the country.
EducationRe: Most Nigerian Students In Ghanaian Universities Are Serial JAMB Failures by Obrafour(m): 3:01pm On Nov 04, 2013
Mr Aboki: The truth is that the Government of Nigeria needs to look into the admission criteria for Nigerian Students into the University.

I see no reason why the Government needs to set up multiple entrance examinations ranging from; WAEC to NECO to GCE to JAMB to Port-JAMB for a student when his counterparts in other West African countries are writing just WAEC and entering into school. These many examinations were neccessitated by the corruption that has eaten deep into the education system due to widespread examination malpractice.

The fact that a student aces their JAMB test and yet have to put 3 different results (GCE|NECO & WAEC) together to attain the required 6 Credit necceasry to gain admission into the University does not make these students any better than those that got admission riding on the back of a single result.

What applies in Ghana is that when once you ace your WAEC, you gain admission into the University and should you perform poorly in the University, you get expelled and have to go through the system again. Infact, once expelled, its really difficult to re-renter the University again. The problem with our education system isnt the fact that we have to owrite JAMB, the problem is that the foundation is already poor. Many of the half-baked graduates walking around today have JAMB results.

To the Nigerians who run to those Mushroom Universities in Ghana to school, note that many of these schools dont have an accreditation for their courses. My friends who were in their third year in Univeristy of Cape Coast (which is a major federal Uni in Ghana) all had to drop out and go to europe because their course had no accreditation .

Be wise..
First 0ff, there is nothing like a federal university in Ghana, we dont operate a federal system. UCC is not a mushroom institution to make a major blunder that will call for NAB(National Accreditation Board) to cancel that course. If it did happen please provide a verified source to back your claim.

wazobia_N9: Chaley, you are obsessed with nairaland, and I daresay Nigeria...
N0 my friend, I am only here to correct and reply to the lies on Ghanaians in N'Land.... Its not the policy of the government of Ghana to attract nigerian students to study in Ghana. Ghanaian educational institutions only recognise certified WAEC results, you can be the best JAMB student, that will not earn you a place in the least recognised educational institution in Ghana. #Fact

solomon111: The main selling point of ghanian unis is the relative stability compared to Nigerian unis.
Most of the Nigerian political elite send their children to british and american unis for better quality education if they're not schooling in Nigeria.
Do you have the capacity to admit all the qualified students? Why must Nigeria's problem be a shared problem with Ghana? There are. nigerian students studying all over the world, why pick 0n Ghana? You jumped countries like Togo & Benin who are years behind Ghana and have many nigerian students studying there as well, but n0, its Ghana you mist denigrate.

Do Nigerian Colleges have the capacity to admit all those who pass Jamb? How come some Nigerian government officials have their wards in Ghanaian educational institutions if the standard is poor? Is it not a fact that Jamb was introduced so as to limit the number of qualified WAEC students seeking admission due to limited vacancies?

Area-Fada:
What I learnt from a Ghanaian is that most of the lecturers have MSc or professional qualification. She doesn't seem to think much of research or degrees got through research like MPhil or PhD.

That only means they have poorer quality faculty/lecturers.

Despite their stable academic calendar, less qualified staff means lower quality education.

You cannot give what you don't have.
@Bolded, and what has that got to do with nigerians? We Ghanaians are not complaining. See ehn, its obvious you just want to rubbish the Ghanaian educational system to satisfy your chauvinist views.

Any Nigerian Graduate of Ghana that didnt attend the following schools;

1. KNUST Kumasi (My alma Mater)
2. University of Ghana (Legon)
3. University of Mines and Technology (Tarkwa)
4. University of Cape Coast

I wonder wetin you go find for Ghana.. You should have attended BAbcock Uni in Nigeria.
Private Universities like Central, Vallew View and Ashesi are also competitive.
Don't forget, the colleges in Nigeria can't take all students, this in my opinion make them opt for Ghanaian instituitions as well.

wandeok: . And ehmm by they way, i was arguing with a friend of mine, he said Pidgin English originated from ghana. is this true. where does this our Nigerian Pidgin originated
from?
From what I hear Pidgin english originated from the four WestAfrican Gold Coast Colonies(Nigeria,Ghana,Sierra Leone & The Gambia). Each of the above countries have their unque way of speaking pidgin english. Not one pidgin english is the same. Pidgin english was regarded as the language for illiterates and school drop-outs, but the reverse is the case today. Pidgin English is regarded as the lingua franca among the youth of Ghana today.
