FamilyRe: Must My Father Be The One To Receive My Bride Price? by Ochendo1: 3:58pm On Nov 11, 2019
QuintessentialW:
Hello house, good morning.

I have a real concern and I want to know what is permissible from mature and discerning individuals in the house.

Myself and my siblings were raised (from when I was about 8 years old) single handedly by my mum. Even all the 7 years that my father lived with us, my mum chiefly ran the home... she was the one who paid rent and school fees and ensured quality feeding. Father was gainfully employed at the time, but he just lacked a sense of responsibility for family. He finally absconded at about the time I was 8 because he lost his job, and never looked back... he was never involved in our finances or welfare. In all those years, he visited a few times, but that was all. My mum passed on a few years ago and her brother, my uncle, assumed FULL responsibility for my siblings and I. My paternal uncles never lent a helping hand.

Now I'm in my 20s, done with schooling, working currently, and would be getting married soon. I want to know what is permissible. I'm from a minority tribe in Edo State, so I'm not Bini or Esan. My maternal family are Okpe (Urhobos). Left to me, I don't want my father collecting my bride price or walking me down the aisle. He now lives in squalor in the village. I don't want to go to the village to do my traditional wedding if I can help it.

Two years ago when I first had plans of getting married, my maternal uncle who's responsible for us had mentioned that I shouldn't take any man to my dad. My maternal family is angry with him, for what he did to my mum and us. I would love to respect my Uncle's wishes because I feel he has a say, and to show my appreciation for all he's done.

Has it ever happened that a girl's maternal family receives her bride price? Is it a taboo? If that's against tradition, is it possible to choose another location other than the village, where my dad and his kinsmen can perform the traditional rites?

Also, on my church wedding day, can my Uncle walk me down the aisle?

N:B I don't hold any grudges against father. I've been the only one amongst all my siblings who's tried to keep in touch with him. I was the one who personally went to seek him out to know where he lives... and to know my village. Whenever I can afford to, I send him money.

Still, I don't feel he deserves to give my hand in marriage. He's never been a dad, in the true sense of the word. Something happened not so long ago, and he was threatening to curse my brothers... for not looking after him. He acts really entitled.

Candid advice, please. Thank you.
Any reasonable potential inlaw about to marry you will not do anything unless they meet your father.

Forget whatever advices you are getting from your uncle.
PoliticsIhedioha: Why We Joined Open Government Partnership by Ochendo1(op): 8:59am On Nov 11, 2019
Imo State Governor, Chief Emeka Ihedioha has said the state government applied to join the Open Government Partnership (OGP) as one of the ways of entrenching transparency in public service.
Ihedioha, gave the explanation while receiving a delegation of the British High Commission to Nigeria recently, listed other governance reforms initiatives introduced by his administration to mainstream accountability in governance.
Represented by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Gerald Irona, the Governor described Imo as an investment-friendly state, reiterating the commitment of his administration to partner international organizations in ensuring good governance in the state.
“In Imo State, we are highly enterprising people investor-friendly.
We have very huge potentials in tourism, agriculture and education.
We inherited a state with decayed infrastructure and poor morale of citizens, occasioned by poor governance.
Pensioners were owed for over eighty months and the Governor has now started paying.
Governor Emeka Ihedioha has taken steps towards restoring public confidence in governance, with rule of law as a cardinal principle.
“We met an Internally Generated Revenue- IGR base of N258 million monthly.
His Excellency introduced reforms to entrench transparency and accountability in governance.
Through Order 005, the Treasury Single Account -TSA was introduced and as a result, so many leakages in revenue have been blocked. Last month, we generated over N800m, as against N258m that we inherited as IGR.”
“We are implementing the IPPC accounting standards. We have applied to join the Open Government Partnership-OGP, as one of our transparency initiatives.
We are opening up the government for citizens’ scrutiny and participation.
We have opened an Efficiency Unit in the Ministry of Finance, with a view to reducing the cost of governance.
We are investment-friendly and the Governor has set up a desk for ease of doing business in the state.
We seek investments in the areas of Power, Agriculture and Tourism. Imo State is willing and ready to partner with the DFID”, he stated.
Earlier in her presentation, British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing said they were in the state to identify areas of possible support through the Department for International Development.
“We are in your state to get a better understanding of what is on the ground, with a view to knowing how we can support governance in Imo State. We have programmes that will be beneficial to you.
We also wish to understand the challenges you are facing in the state.”

This Ihedioha seems to be sleeping in my opinion.

I thought by now Imo state would've become a construction site.
Road constructions during heavy rains are not advisable.
Such an adventure would result to wastage and overshooting of initial budgets for such projects.
That notwithstanding, the governor has quickly responded to critics whom want the governor to perform magic and turn the State into a Dubai in just 6 months amidst heavy rain showers.
The road rehabilitation will go on at a much slower pace, making the roads motorable for commuters up until the rain stops for massive reconstruction.

PRESS RELEASE

Governor Ihedioha Secures $50Million AfrExim Investment in Imo

Governor Emeka Ihedioha's engagement with international Development Agencies to aid his administration in the task of rebuilding the state, has again yielded results.

The Africa Export Import Bank is set to make Imo State a huge investment hub, by setting up an Africa Quality Assurance Centre (AQAC) for the entire South East and South South regions in the country.

The AfrExim Bank is an export-import Bank which strongly supports expansion, diversification, promotion and development of intra and inter-African trade.

The $50 million (N18 billion) investment/Centre under the quality assurance facility of the bank, will provide certification and inspection services for various products for exports from Imo State and other parts of the regions to the international market.

The centre, which is the first of its kind in the entire South East and South South regions, is an indication of the responses of the investment drive of the governor as well as the remarkable improvement on the Ease of Doing Business rating of Imo State.

It will also provide capacity building to industrialists, make Imo State a business hub, and more importantly, provide employment opportunities and boost economic development of Imo State.

The Centre is a reflection of the efforts of Governor Ihedioha to restore confidence of investors and development partners in Imo State as an investment destination.

Recall that Governor Ihedioha had embarked on a Trade and Investment working visit to the Annual General Meeting of the AfrExim Bank, held in Moscow from June 20th – 22nd, 2019.

The meeting was a melting point for international fund custodians, fund managers, investors and multi lateral finance agencies.
