Politics / President Jonathan Finally Reveals What Caused Recession In 2016 by odeh1(m): 8:42pm On Nov 21, 2018 |
Goodluck Jonathan has stated that
Nigeria's economy slipped into
recession after he left office because of
the "Malicious Propaganda" deployed by
the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Former President claims that it tore the
country's economy to 'Shreds'.
Jonathan wrote this in his newly
launched book, 'My Transition Hours'.
PoliticsNGR gathered that Jonathan also
wrote that the narrative of inheriting an
empty treasury was false.
“Recall that the opposition and their
sympathisers and campaigners, both
local and international, with their
malicious propaganda, tore our
economy to shreds, threatened our
stability and existence as a nation and
intimidated our citizens, all in the bid to
take over power.
Rather than forge a coalition and build
on the momentum we had gathered
when they eventually took office, they
went on a persecution spree and
vengeance mission. That the country
slipped into recession soon after we left
office was a self-inflicted injury caused
by misplaced priorities. The narrative of
inheriting empty treasury is a blatant lie.
Also, the excuse of the collapse of world
crude prices does not hold water. This is
because the Fourth Republic took off in
1999 with crude oil selling for less than
$20 per barrel and a Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) growth at 0.58 per cent,
according to National Bureau of
Statistics (NBS) figures. Yet, the
economy maintained a steady growth
from that year, peaking at 15.33 per
cent in 2002 when the average crude oil
price was about $25.
It is also instructive that the oil and gas
sector constitute about 11 per cent of
our GDP. There had to be a wider
causative factor than just the fall in
world crude prices.
“It also amounts to standing facts on
their heads to continuously claim that
recession was caused by so-called
mindless looting. The truth is that the
opposition, in a bid to undo our
government, became its own undoing
when it got to power, because of the
burden of justifying deliberate
misrepresentations.
There is wisdom in the saying that if you
win a prize and get the crown, don’t go
around destroying the person who
previously held that prize; it will lose its
value.
Even after winning the election and
forming the government at the centre,
the blame game continued. When two
brothers fight to death, it is the
neighbour that inherits their father’s
wealth. And we have seen neighbouring
nations like the Republic of Benin and
Ghana reaping from the capital flight out
of Nigeria.”
He said with the calibre of people he
had in his government, no one could say
they were clueless.
“Just consider that my minister of state
for health, Dr Muhammed Ali Pate, is
now a professor at America’s Duke
University, as well as a Senior Adviser to
the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
based in Washington DC. My minister of
Agriculture, Dr Akinwunmi Adesina, is
now the President of the African
Development Bank (AfDB).
My Co-ordinating minister, Mrs Ngozi
Okonjo Iweala, is the chairperson of the
Board of the Global Alliance for
Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) and
the African Risk Capacity (ARC). She
also sits on the board of Twitter and the
Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank,
just as she is a Senior Adviser at Lazard
and a Director at Standard Chartered Plc
in the United Kingdom, amongst others.
My minister of communication
technology, Dr. Omobola Johnson, is
currently chairperson of custodian and
Allied Insurance Limited as well as the
Global Alliance for Affordable Internet.
And it is not just members of my
cabinet. Others who served with me in
different capacities are also soaring on
the world stage.
A good example is Ms. Arunma Oteh,
who I appointed the Director-General of
the Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC). Under her steady
and skillful direction, Nigeria’s equity
market grew in metric proportions, and
by the time I left office in 2015, the
market had tripled in size to $150 billion
in value. Two months after I left office,
Ms. Oteh was appointed a Vice-
President and Treasurer at the World
Bank.
With such personalities on my cabinet,
no one can factually say we were
‘clueless’ or inept. The evidence of
performance is simply overwhelming.
We gave Nigeria an impressive and
steady GDP growth rate at 6.7 per cent
per annum.
We were officially cited as the third
fastest growing economy in the world by
CNN Money in 2014. We eradicated
polio and guinea worm and became the
first nation in the world to defeat the
Ebola virus, such that the then richest
man in the world, Bill Gates celebrated
us for our prowess in the health sector.
We reduced our food import bill by 36
per cent.”

Education / ABU To Migrate From Undergraduate To Postgraduate University – VC by odeh1(m): 2:07am On Oct 25, 2018 |
The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria on Tuesday disclosed it resolve to migrate from an undergraduate university to postgraduate university inline with global academic practices. The ABU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Garba stated this while declaring open the 2018 School of Postgraduate Studies Biennial National Conference held at the university’s main campus, Samaru-Zaria, Kaduna State. The theme of the conference is: “Paradigm Shift in Postgraduate Studies for Service and Development.” He said: “What we are facing today and what we set for ourselves may sound revolutionary. It may sound unattainable but I think if you are one of us that believe, then nothing is impossible. “That’s why if you begin to believe that some certain things are impossible, then you will remain where you are. This university has gone through removable adjustments in recent times. “Some of the things that we did, believe me sometimes I wonder how God Almighty was merciful to us to have been able to succeed in dislodging or disrupting some of things we have been doing for decades without any commensurate benefits,” he said. According to him, some of the changes came with all the cooperation of both staff and students including those that were rigid but gradually agreed to transforming the character and landscape of the university. “You remember, three years ago or so, when we started to attempt to readjust and restructure the university, of course, we are mindful that new things are very difficult to absorb. “But I remember very well how we starts with splitting of Faculty of Science into today’s Physical and Life Sciences Faculties, then came the creation of the ABU College of Health Sciences from one single faculty to four faculties. “About same time, the more difficult one, we sent our bulldozer to Kongo campus, I attempted to reconfigure Kongo Business Administration with all so much emotions,” he noted. He recalled that people had taken the management down memory lane of the then Premier of Northern Nigeria who established the place, adding that “the question is do we remain where we are?” Garba noted that if the Premier had survived, today, he would have done things differently and brought new things into light. “It reached a point where Kongo had been chocked up, there is no space for expansion. Kongo had lived 70 years or so. In the next 70 years how would it look like? Or do you think life will begin and end with us? It is not possible,” he said. The VC said that was how the management succeeded in transferring and creating the new ABU Business School, adding that it was expanded from two departments (Business Administration and Public Administration) to six departments. “Business Administration alone had been broken into four different departments. All these that we are doing translated into more imperatives, you cannot have one and break it into four and expect that many things that will come after will remain one, it is impossible. “These are some of the things we have done, we have also created new programmes particularly in the Faculty of Engineering, so many programmes have come on stream. “All these programmes that are coming at the undergraduate level, give them four, five years, they will begin to require post graduate expansion. “Remember also, the Distance Learning Centre has come on stream now and well grounded and runs both post graduate and undergraduate courses and its still expanding to create more access to our teeming candidates,” he said. The VC said ABU remained number one in Nigeria in all ramification, adding that the expectation on the university was enormous in terms of capacity to take both undergraduates and postgraduates. Garba said the university had internationalised its education, adding that 45 students were recently sent to China for dual degree programmes between ABU and such universities. Earlier in his welcome speech, the Dean, School of Post Graduate Studies, Prof. Sadiq Zubairu-Abubakar had said the PG School underscored the importance of conforming with the global best practices in the delivery of postgraduate studies in university system. “Thus, we sought to obtain approval to include in the regulations governing the postgraduate studies in this university that PG students must publish scientific articles from their theses and dissertation to enable them graduate. “To facilitate easy attainment of this requirement, the SPGS delayed the effective date for the commencement of the policy and further sought and obtained approval of the university administration to introduce: 1. Biennial Conference in 2016 and 2. establishment of 2 SPGS journals in sciences and humanities.” The dean said the four-day event promised exiting activities relevant for the audience and central for the future growth of the university. Zubairu-Abubakar said the university administration had given approval for major restructuring and reforms of the SPGS to enable the school introduce and sustain the needed changes in PG studies. He identified the needed changes to include; physical restructuring of school to create conducive learning environment and improve delivery and review of the regulations to enhance quality and improve graduation rate. Others, according to him, are; deployment of ICT tools to improve effectiveness and efficiency of school operations and development of new portal, website and established call/help centre for enhanced visibility and effective administration of PG programmes. Over 500 participants from across the country are attending the conference. (NAN) https://newsdiaryonline.com/abu-migrate-undergraduate-postgraduate-university-vc/amp/
