Both wrong. |
I am not sure if the title is appropriate but I just wanted something that would capture my observations. In times past, every household in Nigeria had fancy family photo albums which were only shown to a select few. If a Visitor was perceived as diabolical or a 'hater', automatically, he/she would never have access to the photo album. People guarded their pictures so tightly that even when you are allowed to view an album, a child sits with you and his/her eyes follows the movements of your hands till you were done looking at the pictures. All this is so you don't steal a picture and do 'juju' with it. Very funny right? Now don't get me wrong on this. JUJU EXISTS. It exists everywhere, not just in Africa. The only difference is that it is known by different names in other climes. Of course, people used to steal people's pictures from photo albums in those days for ritual purposes and do other bad things with them but why has all that changed? I mean these days, Instagram has changed things. People now post their entire family album online without fear, even our grandmothers who forbade these things then are catching on the vibe. What changed? Value! Yes, the value we attach to these things have dropped to almost zero and that is why we don't get to hear of using people's pictures and all that for rituals and juju. My mentality is not warped for believing that juju exists, you can not even convince me that it doesn't. It is no joke when people make certain jokes about my place of origin but deep down, I know these things exist. Just never wish to be a victim. I am just making an observation as to why we went from a picture conserving people to what we have today and why suddenly, even nollyhood no longer make movies where a group of ten friends just suddenly start dying one after the other because one dibia somewhere in the village is striking them dead one by one through a picture that one of their friends stole from their album and gave the dibia to carry out a revenge on his/her behalf. When Value is placed so much on a thing, it becomes very dear and becomes too important. The reason why a thief would go to a house and steal a Range Rover over a Truck of almost the same amount is because of the value placed on the range rover. It is the same way things happen in the spiritual realm. When something has value to you, the enemy would target that thing. It was common in those days to have missing wedding pictures from family albums but these days, everything is thrown in your face and people no longer care about these things. Rituals still exist but now, the requirements are different because pictures don't just work again. It is no longer important, not much value is placed on personal pictures these days, all thanks to Social media. Voodoo does exist but what I am certain about is that voodoo works with things that have value and are guarded very closely. These are just my observations...

patani:You and I can create a disruption. It may not be immediately but with the right mindset, we can achieve a lot for Nigeria. I believe so much in Nigeria because buried beneath all the corruption and political noise are a crop of fine, exceptional and brilliant young potentials. We have recognized all the problems, good! Now that we are half way into the solutions, how do you come in? How can I come in? Nigeria is greater than we see, you know? |
mrsage:Thank you! |
Disruption comes with a price, whether very good or very bad. In many cases, the latter is always the case and such kind of disruptions yield the best results. As it is now, it is either the government is afraid of disruption or 'they' are just indifferent to what ever the common man is going through. I remember when I used to travel to Benin not because I liked it but because I had to be in School. I always wished I could disappear from home and land in Benin without traveling by road. The road was a mess at the time. A journey of 4 hours on average would take 7/8/9 hours because of bad roads. There was always traffic on the road but then a disruption came, the government decided to fix the roads and that even made matters worse. There were always road diversions, once while in senior secondary school, I was traveling alone to Benin, due to bad roads & hold up, the driver took us through the bushes, far from the express. All that we were seeing were just bushes and trees, it was a very scary experience as even the older passengers in the bus were scared & couldn't hide it. I was very scared but the driver had no bad intentions, he was paying one of the prices for disruption. On my first trip after the Benin-Ore road was newly reconstructed, I remember the journey that used to take me 6/7/8/9 hours depending on traffic took me 3.30hours. Of course, everyone was happy. But did that come without any sad tales? My Uniform always got very dirty from dusts but after everything, we smiled. Till date, some roads have not been finished in Abeokuta and people are complaining bitterly. The same people complaining are the same people singing the Governor's praise. Abeokuta roads went from single lanes to 2/3/more lanes. The governor even built flyover bridges/overhead bridges/passenger bridges etc. This didn't come easy. It was a very terrible period. There was dust everywhere, people were forced to start wearing masks, some people avoided some routes completely, there was always traffic, every household was disconnected from water supply by the state water corporation because of the constructions going on, it still hasn't been restored. The life of one of the crane handlers working with the contractors was even cut short. He was 21 or so as was circulated. He was handling the crane when he probably went too close and got electrocuted high up. Work stopped temporarily then to respect his memory. The price of Disruption! When the third mainland bridge was being constructed, some white engineers and locals who were working on the bridge died in the lagoon. Today, every lagosian loves to drive on the bridge. Disruption! Disruption can't and won't always come with ease. Sometimes, big money may be involved. Lagos generates about 15,000tonnes of thrash daily. But what happens to them? They end up in landfill polluting the environment and causing eyesores. Of recent, Lagos has been very dirty. Even Ikoyi and other highbrow areas aren't left out. But what is the government doing about it? Isn't it time the Lagos government took a cue from Sweden and Kigali? Both places have different approaches to keeping a clean environment and the methods seem to be working. I am comparing Lagos state with Sweden, a Country because Lagos has a bigger population than Sweden so it is safe to say Lagos can exist as a Country. In fact, many Countries can come out of Lagos State. The population of Lagos sits at roughly 21 million while that of Sweden is 10 million, half of what is obtainable in Lagos. Lagos is a model state. If Lagos can get it right with properly containing wastes, other states will learn fast. Lagos has all it takes to generate its own electricity. Kigali is just the capital of Rwanda. Rwanda has still not gotten over the 1994 genocide that shook the very foundation of Rwanda and left the world in shock but barely 24 years later, its capital boasts of being the cleanest in Africa! How did they do it? Are people paying the price of the cleanness? Very well. Are the same people happy? Of course, they should be. Who does not like good thing? Once, the news of the Nigerian man who turned wastes into building blocks and also built a light generator that uses fuel from wastes was all over the blogosphere. Forums discussed, the buzz was there, but just for a day or two, after that, the story died and the man was never heard of again. Only in Nigeria will such happen. A solution right in our fingertips. That man ought to be part of a delegation of consultants sent to Sweden and Kigali to learn more on how to turn wastes into reusable forms and save the environment from more harm. I mean, look at Lagos. Those dump sites at Ojota and Igando. They are always smelling, sometimes, even winding up your car windows don't help with the stench that comes from the wastes. I really hope the government can be more proactive on this course. I understand some projects have been embarked on in the past to help properly manage wastes but nothing have been achieved. That young man should be found and his knowledge well utilized, he is an asset to the Country. If the government can raise over 400billion Naira for 4th mainland bridge, it can certainly do for waste management. Whatever disruptions this would need would not exceed MONEY. It would be a welcome idea by the people of Lagos State if the issue of waste can be addressed once and for all. Imagine a Lagos that generates say 45%-60% of its light from wastes. Just imagine a Lagos without litters of PET bottles and Tetra paks everywhere you go. Imagine a true cleaner Lagos. Won't it be lovely to have Lagos as one of the 5 cleanest States in Africa? A mega City in deed, it would be! Itesiwaju Eko! Eko onibaje o! Long live Lagos!

During the International Women's Week that was just concluded, I attended a conference and exhibition put together by SME100Nigeria. At the conference, there were three panels in total and different issues were raised and discussed, all very key issues. But one was of particular interest to me, it was the issue of work related Sexual harassment. Sooner than had been expected, it shifted to sexual harassment in general for both boys and girls. Then the issue of Nigerians always too quick to jump on hashtags that originate from America especially was pointed out by Mrs Bolanle Austen-Peters who gave several reasons why it is a very wrong thing to do. The popular #metoo hashtags was cited. A key reason, according to Mrs Austen Peters on why we should not be very fast in copying every hashtag on the internet is because they give wrong statistics and put our Country in a bad light. Imagine where people are using the hashtags just anyhow and when a group of people want to carry out a research, they decide to follow the statistics of people who have used the #metoo hashtags and eventually give wrong statistics and conclude that 99% of Nigerian men are child molesters where that is obviously not the case as we still have saner men here in Nigeria. She gave an instance of when she was in a room of people including foreigners and the issue was raised, then one of the people said all Nigerian men are child molesters and she corrected that wrong notion immediately saying, she wasn't molested, her husband has not done such before and her children too so where did they get their statistics from? It all boils down to jumping on those hashtags. Mrs Chioma Afe ,a staff of Diamond bank then went on to say in Nigeria right now, the hashtags #metoo doesn't suit us, rather we should jump on #timeisup. The reason being that in America for instance, when someone comes out to say #metoo, xyz sexually harassed me, the issue isn't swept under the rock, it is looked into and sometimes, the molester is even suspended from work and has certain rights taken from him. Such movement may work in America because they have a proactive environment. In Nigeria however, the case is different. Instead of joining them to say #metoo where they will easily get justice and you may not, it is time to say #timeisup. The movement here should be #timeisup! A lot of people are getting away with sexual harassment charges here because we haven't learnt to say Time is up. It is not enough to say me too. Let these child molesters know that Time is up. Measures should be taken to make them know that enough is enough! It was a very enlightening panel as I learnt so much on this topic and on other issues raises. I wish I could type more but I have to attend to other issues. In all, let us learn not to be too quick yo jump on those hashtags. People are keeping tabs and will use them to give wrong statistics about Nigeria. Not all Nigerians are Molesters, so let us try to uphold the dignity of our Country.

Innov8ve1:Nothing is fishy. This is a big dump site, the fire that gutted it is very normal in dump sites that have existed for years. Flammable gases are emitted from the decomposition of these wastes over time and this can cause fire break out. Methane gas is a popular gas that emits from dump sites. |
It is no longer news that Lagos is a mega City, what is news is that not many have been able to grasp the many opportunities that abound in this 'Yankee' mega city. Researchers have projected that by 2035, Lagos would become the largest mega city in Africa. Nigeria is projected to become the 4th largest Country in the world with a population of 400 million people by 2050. Lagos is the 6th largest City in Africa and we are all aware that Lagos is the most populated state in Nigeria currently. Are you ready to go mega with the mega city? The rate of unemployment in Nigeria continues to skyrocket year in year out. Every four years, a new Government comes into power with the promise to tackle unemployment, hopes become raised and people are eager but alas get disappointed. In recent times, Nigerians have become bolder and are not afraid to explore and put their innovative abilities to test. You would be surprised at what Nigerians are really capable of doing. Yesterday, I read in the news that AIT had laid off 300 of her workforce nationwide and couldn't help but feel sad for the workers. It has become normal, the yearly news of massive laying off of Banks staff. For how long do we fold our hands and watch things 'dabaru' before we act? Entrepreneurship is the future we desire. Many think that the list of prospects in Entrepreneurship/Business have been exhausted but No, there are still many areas yet untapped. I have compiled a list of promising Businesses that have not been explored in Nigeria and I am certain they will succeed in Nigeria, given proper management. They are mobile businesses and with the little I know of major Cities in Nigeria (apart from the East), these Businesses will mostly thrive in Lagos. I wrote them with a mega city in mind. Many of the Businesses are capital intensive and will require strategic partnerships to pull through but you can start from somewhere if you must. 1). Mobile Salon: a.k.a Mobile Barber's shop - Unisex, Female Salon, Male Salon. There is no argument in the fact that one of the most thriving vocational businesses of today, in every part of the world is 'Hair Business'. Ladies must look beautiful and slay with different hair styles, the men must have cuts every now and then to appear well kempt. Sometimes, the reason why people refuse to get hair cuts or change their weaves when due is not the lack of money but laziness to go to the salon. Well, if Mohammed won't go to the mountain, the mountain will come to Mohammed. Now imagine a mobile Salon in a truck built to spec, that comes around your neighbourhood every now and then. Meanwhile, your truck is mainly stationed in a Tertiary institution where you are sure of patronage. Places where this Business will thrive are: Estates, Tertiary Institutions, Open Parks, Popular hangouts/spots etc. 2). Mobile Grocery. When I first got this idea in my mind, I thought "oh how nice", I tried to put up a business plan for it to see how feasible it was and guess what? It is 100% a very good idea. As with what I do every time I get such ideas, I google them to see if the idea is already out. When I googled it, I found out it was already thriving somewhere in the U.S but not in Nigeria. A mobile grocery will bring smiles to a lot of faces especially those who stay in Estates where shops are not a common find. Places where this business will thrive are: Tertiary institutions and its environs, Estates, Developing communities, far areas etc. It can be a fruits only van/truck or fresh veggies and foodstuffs only or combined. 3). Mobile Cinema. Do I need to go into details? A mobile truck that serves as a cinema. Woah! This will mostly thrive in Tertiary institutions, Open parks, Estates (with little turnouts though). It will not be profitable during rainy seasons though because the setting for this is an open space where people can come around with their cars (remember Simi's Jamb question video?) or chairs are provided by the cinema. The truck has to be specially built so it can serve the purpose. Trust me, I have so many ideas on this particular one, it drives me crazy. 4). Mobile Dental Clinic. As usual, when I got the inspiration for this idea sometime in 2015/2016 during my diploma days, I checked online to see if the idea existed and discovered that some where in Singapore, it existed. While compiling this list, I decided to google this particular idea again and wowza! It is now in Nigeria. Acccording to Business Day, Dr Yemisi is an entrepreneur, who started a mobile dental clinic ‘Dentist At your Door’ in 2017. She is a beneficiary of TEF. Brilliant! This idea can only be executed by a Dental Surgeon because of its peculiarities. It is very capital intensive but with proper management and the right team, your investment can stand the test of time. It will be well appreciated by people and even those who don't believe in Dental check ups will patronize you if your services are cheap and you have a neat space. An App will also be required for different reasons which include booking and maybe to check for demands and know which area have the highest requests for Dentists. It will do great in higher institutions, Estates, Island, Schools during close time (Primary & Secondary), etc. 5). Mobile football viewing centre. This will work like the Cinema. Location will be a great determinant in preparing a proper business plan for this idea. 6). Mobile Suya vendor (to have sitting spaces) or Mobile Sharwama vendor. This can only work in Schools because of what it involves which is setting up of the suya stand or Sharwama prep environment (have you seen the movie, The Chef?). The inside of the truck which will be exposed will serve as the sitting spots. The suya stand has to be away from the location of the fuel tank but luckily, most trucks use Diesel and Diesel is not highly flammable. 7). Mobile 'Obioma', Mobile Cobbler. Most University campuses are lacking these services, I was shocked the day I found out that there is no tailor inside Luth/Cmul campus for those who want to make amendments. I got angry because this was an opportunity people failed to grab. A person who wants to try these businesses does not need a van or truck. A tricycle specially built is enough to carry out these services which means you won't be paying rent for shops. All you need will be permission from the necessary authority and your skill, then you are good to go. Ofcourse, you will need to tweak the tricycle to suit what services you are offering. . Mobile Pharmacy. This will require a lot of Government scrutiny before it can even begin operation, just like the Mobile Dental clinic too. A pharmacy store is not one to be joked with, let alone a mobile one. A mobile pharmacy is going to be the most difficult to run because of security issues that may arise unless POS will only be used. Also, it can pose a major risk as it could become a means to circulate fake drugs unless tightly regulated by the right governing bodies. Otherwise, it is a very lucrative venture to dab into. Making it mobile only increases your earnings twice as much. How cool will it be to have an app where you can just order for a particular drug and then in few minutes, a truck pulls over in your neighbourhood and you simply stroll to get your package or better still, have it delivered to your doorstep for a token? 9). Mobile Boutique. There is no need to dwell on this, this will only work out in a Student dominated area and it will be very popular if very affordable but quality wares are sold. Scrap what I wrote about it only working out in a Student dominated area, if you check in your cards well, you can pull it off anywhere. A properly researched Business plan should guide you on what to do. 10). Mobile 'Okrika' store Not everyone may like this because some people don't like to be seen shopping okrika even if they wear okrika. But hey, thinking outside the box comes in handy here, BRAND! You can create a 3-in-1 mobile okrika store that will include Shop, Wash, Brand! What this simply means is that you will be running a laundry and tailoring business along the sales of Okrika. How this will work? Trust me, it is a perfect Business if you get your calculations right. As per the mobile laundry aspect, ask me. On the contrary, such a business is not for weaklings, it would require a whole lot to kick-start, but if the right tempo can be maintained, get ready to sail. 11). Mobile Kiosk. This will only work out in Estates that don't have kiosks at all. Also, due to security reasons, it may not be entirely welcomed and may not be worth some of the 'wahala' that may be associated with it. Getting a ground space may be a better option. However, it will thrive in higher institutions. In conclusion, these businesses, though may seem highly profitable and catchy, setting them up may not be as easy as one thinks. There are a lot of Government registrations to cover, so many policies and regulations to consider. The one that makes them almost impossible to achieve is CAPITAL. All the businesses listed above, except number 7 require huge capitals to kick start. Some require as much as 20 million naira because of the Vans while number 7 requires about 400, 000 naira as capital because of the tricycle. Despite all the loopholes, learn to think outside the box. How does one even begin to save to start such businesses? Well, I would conclude with this; Information is key. Find it. Google is your friend. There are so many resources available in the cyber space, quit ranting and find your rhythm. |
Every one of us have the ability to think up brilliant and very innovative ideas but what separates Mr A from B is the work done to bring the idea to reality. It takes nothing really to start doing something you have always postponed. No matter how hard it may seem, just start! |

The Original Article is a long read and I just culled this short part from the concluding paragraphs. Read below: The best ways you can put depression to check if you are not around a familiar place or faces (also applicable if you are around family and friends) are: 1). Avoid lonely places. 2). Join a responsible club or association, religious gathering or vocational School. 3). Volunteer for causes, N.G.O's, charity organizations etc. 4). Visit an orphanage to spend time with the children - trust me, they reassure hope. If possible, make it a routine. You must not break a bank to visit an orphanage, anything your heart can afford, take it there and they will appreciate the love. 5). Visit people in prisons. You can go with a church or N.G.O if you do not have the wherewithal to go on your own. 6). Visit open parks and gardens often where you are sure to see people around. 7). Learn new things; acquire new skills. . Reconnect with an old friend. Hang out with friends or family.9). More importantly, seek counsel from a professional. No matter what, don't let your thoughts control you when you are alone because it may be too late to realize that suicide is not the solution. Society's role is to be less judgemental and more encouraging. You and I make up the society. It is not until someone commits suicide that you should start organizing conferences and seminars on Depression as we saw in the subsequent weeks that followed the death of Dr Orji Allwell who committed suicide by jumping off the third mainland bridge in Lagos. Family and friends should always come through for their loved ones who are going through tough times because whether you like it or not, when someone commits suicide, he frees him/herself. S/he doesnt feel the pain, it is the living loved ones left behind that bear the whole pain and struggles to come to terms with the loss of their loved ones. So you see why it is very important for you to help (emotionally or financially) that friend or family member who is going through a tough phase. No one just wakes up one day and decides to commit suicide, the person would have gone through different phases before arriving at such a decision. You may be helping someone overcome a phase by just saying, Hi, how are you? |
Parents/Guardians should be more concerned about the quality of Education their Children/Wards get. It is becoming a big problem, the way Schools are springing up from every corner every day. It is not every teacher that is qualified to teach. Before enrolling your ward in any School, be sure of the quality of teachers the School boasts of. |
