Swamped by an underwater home
After the housing collapse derails the American Dream, a cloud of uncertainty hangs over the Boateng family

On a cold Sunday afternoon 10 years ago, Comfort and Kofi Boateng stood with Comfort’s mother and their three children before a quarter-acre parcel in a brand-new subdivision in the center of Prince George’s County.

The place was called Fairwood. They stepped onto Lot 71, an empty stretch of gravel, and closed their eyes and bowed their heads. Comfort raised her hands to the sky.

DASHED DREAMS: This is the third part in a series looking at the plight of the black middle class, particularly in Maryland’s Prince George’s County.
Part 1: Residents of Prince George’s, the nation’s highest-income majority-black county, lost far more wealth during the financial crisis than families in neighboring, majority-white suburbs.
Part 2: Half of the loans on newly constructed homes in one Prince George’s County subdivision during the housing boom in 2006 and 2007 wound up in foreclosure.
“We sanctify the grounds with the blood of Jesus,” Kofi said.

The land had once been the site of Fairview, one of the Maryland’s largest slave plantations. Now it was Fairwood, an 1,800-home subdivision that would soon become the richest neighborhood in the richest African American county in the United States.

A decade ago, Comfort and Kofi were at the apex of an astonishing journey they had made from Ghana in 1997, when they had won a visa lottery to come to America. They did not know it at the time, but they were also at the midpoint in their odyssey from American Dream to American Nightmare.

ABOVE: Comfort and Kofi Boateng sort through two large boxes of mortgage and financial papers as they talk about their financial situation in Fairwood.
Today, they struggle under nearly $1 million in debt that they will never be able to repay on the 3,292-square-foot, six-bedroom, red-brick Colonial they bought for $617,055 in 2005. The Boatengs have not made a mortgage payment in 2,322 days — more than six years — according to their most recent mortgage statement. Their plight illustrates how some of the people swallowed up by the easy credit era of the previous decade have yet to reemerge years later.

When they moved into the house in November 2005, Kofi was earning $82,740 as an IT consultant for a government contractor, and Comfort, then 43, was making $30,000 as an administrative assistant. But in the overheated mortgage market of the time, they said everyone told them that they could buy a $600,000 house..............

By Micah Peters

"I had never been in Nigeria. I read that the capital Lagos was known as The Hell of Africa. But I'm not as quickly scared, "says football coach Clemens Westerhof, who in 1989 became coach of that country. He was one of the first Dutch football coaches who went to an African country. The football in Nigeria was the late eighties hardly developed.

It also emerged that a country with a bleak political regime. That was even worse when General Sani Abacha in 1993 came to power through a coup. "Abacha is seen as the hardest dictator Nigeria has ever had," said Edwin Schoon, researcher of the program of the power of the ball, a book about politics and football in Africa. And writer "Abacha made everything that is smacking of democracy down to size."

However Westerhof did not care of the political situation: "You should not engage in politics and your boating own course, otherwise you turn." But he did have good political contacts. According Finidi George, one of the Nigerian star players of that time, Westerhof had access to the highest boss. "Problems were resolved very quickly." Westerhof forged a solid national team. George: "In the period Westerhof came and everyone went as he wanted. But Westerhof changed all that. The team was a unit. "

Man jailed three years for importing fake drugs

AUGUST 29, 2012 BY ADE ADESOMOJU 109 COMMENTS
A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced a middle-aged man, Uzoma Madueke, to three years imprisonment with hard labour for importing fake Fulcin tablets into the country.

Justice Okon Abang in a judgment on Tuesday held that the convict chose to indulge in a venture that could result in the death of Nigerians.

The judge said, “Such abnormal behaviour requires drastic action. The action of the convict is bad because there are other legitimate means to make money.

“If not for the vigilance of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control in apprehending the convict, anybody could have been a victim of the fake drug, even the court.”

Madueke, had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charge instituted against him by NAFDAC.

However, he later confessed to the commission of the crime.

His lawyer, Mr. O. Amobi, pleading with the court to temper justice with mercy, said his client was a first offender, who had learnt a bitter lesson.

He believed the convict would no longer indulge in the crime.

The offence, according to the one count charge signed by MHA Baba, was committed on June 25, 2009 in Epe, Lagos.

The charge read, “That you, Uzoma Madueke of No 47, Lagos Road, Epe, Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, on or about the 25th day of June, 2009, did import fake and substandard tablets to wit: Fulcin Criseofulvina Tablets and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 (a) of the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Food (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act No 25 of 1999 and punishable under Section 3 (1) (a) of the same Act.”

During the review of facts before the judgment was delivered, NAFDAC’s counsel, Chris Okeke, said Madueke intentionally imported the fake drug in order to make maximum profit not minding the side effect of his action to Nigerians.

remark D: no matter how many times you try to explain this to them, and that Banjo was not heading to the SW to attack the Yorubas, they will refuse to see it that way and hold on to the lie their forebearers told them., its pathetic really. I mean... these are grown up adults behaving this way. definately part of what keeps the two tribes from from coming together. I cant think of any reason they would hold on to lies, other than to cover up something... in the cas eof the wary its to use such a lie as reason for the actions of Awolowo. Thats the only thing they have against us, without it, it leaves them looking bad, really bad, for being on the wrong side of of history.

So to save face, it is safe to say "... you invaded our land to attack us ... "
The day they let go of all the lies they hold against Igbos, (i guess its just that lone action of "invadi" that is the last of the two tribbes cooperating) is when we will be one step closer to coming together...

pardon my typing yall, aint very used to flatscreen cell phones...

ohh so biafra wasnt instrested in attacking yorubas ? then why did biafra bomb lagos. make u explain that one. heres the evidence.

Solape Ademulegun-Agbi
Thirty-eight years after, the ghost of the January 15, 1966 coup of the “five-majors” is yet to be exorcised.

The daughter of Brigadier-General Samuel Ademulegun, the then GOC Ist Division, Kaduna, has narrated how Nzeogwu made her and her siblings orphans during the ill-fated coup. Today, Mrs. Solape Ademulegun-Agbi, proprietress of Hillcroft Schools, may be a fully-grown woman. But the trauma of having both parents shot in her presence has left an indelible mark. Reacting to a story captioned, Return My Son’s Body, Nzeogwu’s Mother Begs Obasanjo, recently published in Saturday Sun, Ademulegun-Agbi said that Nzeogwu’s mother wanted her son to be treated as a hero, whereas he could actually pass as a villain.

But her sores were made the more painful when she recalls that Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu was a welcome guest who always relished a meal of pounded yam any time he came calling at the Ademuleguns.
She spoke to Daily Sun. Excerpts:

General Ademulegun
My dad is everything you would love in a father. Very caring, hardworking and dedicated. He was in love with horse-riding and he made sure I owned one. I named my horse Santana. I used to ride Santana to school in those days, so when the Volkswagen Santana came into the market, it really brought back memories of those days. As a typical Ondo man, my dad was fond of eating pounded yam with the full complement of cow-leg. Generally, he was a wonderful father who more often than not, hoisted me on his broad shoulders. These are some of the memories that have kept me going all these years.

The 1966 coup
My parents, Brigadier-General Samuel and Hajia Latifat Ademulegun were killed during the 1966 coup. That particular experience was quite traumatic and I have never been able to overcome it. At a point, I had phobia for anything military. My dad was the then General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1st Division, Kaduna and his army number was N3 which makes him the third highest-ranking officer in the Nigerian Army. Major Nzeogwu was a welcome guest in my parents’ home. He will always come to our house for steaming hot meal of pounded yam. Being Ondo State indigenes, pounded yam was a regular meal in my mother’s kitchen. On the day of the coup, Nzeogwu came calling with some other soldiers in the wee hours of the day. I think they were about six soldiers. As an impressionable young girl of six, that was quite a number. There were guns everywhere. I remember vividly that I was down with chicken pox, so I had the opportunity of sleeping in my parents’ room. My immediate younger brother was also sleeping soundly in a cot in the same room. But when Nzeogwu came in, there was little talking. I even called him uncle, but he was the one that shot my mother in the chest. She didn’t die immediately, but she was rolling on the floor, gasping and bleeding. With the last ounce of her breath, she was calling “Kole, Kole” (my immediate elder brother whose room was nearby). But my brother never heard because he hid under his bed when the gunshots were booming. I don’t know who killed my dad because he was dragged out of the bedroom. The batman, who was in the boys quarters polishing my dad’s shoes, and our housemaid, one Gbelle, shepherded us out of the bedroom. These memories are ever so green in my heart. A child remembers bad things more than the good.

Life after the coup
We were really devastated by the events that took place, but the Army rallied round us. Major-General Aguiyi Ironsi’s wife came and took us away from the house. From there we were taken to Lagos. The military catered for our upkeep right to our first degree in the university. Since then, we have not fared badly. My elder brother, Group Captain Frank Ademulegun, now deceased, was the only one who joined the armed forces. My other siblings are doing well both in private and government circles. The military officials and the Ondo State government really tried for us. I also give them a pass mark for immortalising my father’s name. My dad has a street named after him in Abuja and the Ikeja Cantonment. There is also a cenotaph in his honour in Ondo Town. At an auspicious time, we plan to chronicle a biography of our parents.

Nzeogwu and family
I am not supposed to harbour grudges as a Christian. But the fact will always remain that Nzeogwu was instrumental to the death of my parents in the ill-fated coup. Nzeogwu's mother wants to portray her son as a hero, while in some quarters the word villain is actually apt. I don’t know what the hue and cry is all about. The government too buried my parents. I actually commend the government for burying him (Nzeogwu ) since he died in active service, so to say. Now, we are talking of exhuming a body some 30 years after. It is ridiculous. The family should let sleeping dogs be. Nzeogwu’s mother should just relax, hoping for a re-union with her son some day, if such a thing is tenable in the spirit world. I think we should just move on. We have the retrogressive penchant of dwelling too much in the past.

Military rule
A lot of shine has been taken off the military. In the past, the military man was someone to be admired, a gentleman to the core, one to be emulated. But things are no longer the same these days. To me, it doesn’t matter who rules as far as there is safety of lives and property; freedom of speech and movement. Democracy is good, but it comes with its own problems. During the military regime, there was sanity in the land. Things were done right with military precision. But since it is a mark of civilisation to be democratic, then so be it. But to me, it doesn’t really matter who rules as far as the machinery of government is oiled effortlessly to the benefit of all citizens.
