There is a popular saying that he who fights and run away leaves to fight another. But when you run away even before the fight, you loose the morale to fight another day. |

I was moved to share this story because I see many people trying so hard to fight their battle. Some ten years back after my youth service, I got employed in my uncle's organization and things were going fairly well until this very day of my story. We had some partners who came in from the US to consult for the organization, NGO. They were returning to America having finished the project and I was mandated to take them to the airport with the driver who was an elderly man, I fairly got along with him because he was talkative. On our way to the airport, the driver started acting funny, talking to the guests in a way that I felt he was begging for tip, I tried jokingly to neutralize what I sense was embarrassing to our guests. We got to the airport and helped check in their luggage and we said our good byes, the driver would not stop with parting compliments, clearly showing he was expecting them to give him money, I left him and went to the car, he was not given any tip. I guess that infuriated him and he was trying to transfer his aggression. Our guest ask me to drop her friend at Asokoro on our way back and I obliged, while heading to Asokoro, the driver put on the music in the car so loud and I felt it was too loud and turned it down a little, he got angry and increased it higher, again I turned it lower and he turned it higher but the guest at the back seat who was seeing what was happening tapped me from the back and whispered to my ear that she understands his frustration and should just tolerate him, so I let go, we dropped the guest and returned to our office in Garki. We arrived at the office and the driver sensing that I was going to report him, went straight to my uncle's office and without saying a word bursted into tears and started weeping, I guess he learnt that trick from the army, he was a retired recruit, attack before you are attacked. He told my uncle who was with a guest that the kind of insult and treatment I gave him was his worst experience in life. My uncle grudgingly asked me what happened and before I could explain anything, he bashed me in a way I still remember till date, my uncle's guest asked him to let me explain, at this point I was barely holding back tears in my eyes and seeing that my response would not make any difference, I only managed to alter "I LEAVE HIM TO GOD". Two days later on a Saturday, the driver took my uncle's private Jeep for servicing and upon his return home, he stopped the car at the gate while blasting music to the highest level, as he stepped down to go open the gate, the car door slammed and pinned itself with the keys inside, the driver started running helter skelter and was shouting, e don happen oh. There was nothing any one could do, the trouble was the Jeep blocked the other occupants and other cars lined up behind the car because it was one entrance for everybody. The car remained there with the music blasting until my uncle came back and brought the spare key. In front of everybody he told the driver, this boy left you for God day before yesterday, see how God answered him. My uncle not knowing how to apologise called me the next day and gave me N50k to go change the tyres of my car, I knew it a way of saying sorry because outside my salary he had never given me anything more than N2k for weekend, I have since left the organization and moved on and was told the driver lost his job due to some other mischiefs he had done. I ran into this driver yesterday after 5 years, he told me he lost his wife and how life has been difficult and I pitied him. My friends, leave vengeance to God, don't hold grudges. |
