Politics / RCCG Pastor Shot, Butchered In Borno by Ogbonaikenna(m): 3:51pm On Jul 18, 2014
The killing of a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) pastor by the Boko Haram sect in troubled Borno state has thrown the church into mourning and apprehension.

The pastor, Taiwo Dokun was killed in the insurgents attack on Dille village in Askira-Uba local government area of the state on Monday.

According to some members of RCCG who spoke to journalists in Maiduguri, the whereabouts of the late pastor’s wife and three children is not yet known.

“The family could have been abducted by the insurgents who took away many of the residents of the town as the family members were not found since the attack and have not called any one.

“Though their residence was completely razed by the insurgents, their corpses were not found in the debris,” one of the church members who preferred anonymity told journalists.

Speaking from Dille on Friday, Jacob Mamza narrated how the pastor was killed in the attack which claimed 45 lives. He said “the pastor was in his house at about 6am when the insurgents attacked the village, his house was surrounded by the hoodlums and while attempting to run he was shot.

“Pastor Taiwo was running to a neighbour’s house and it was in the course of his fleeing that he was shot in the head and the chest and the insurgent equally came to butcher him to make sure that he was dead.”

162 troops desert Nigerian
Army within last week as Boko
Haram losses kill morale
Monday, 14 July 2014 14:36
MILITARY commanders fear that
as many as 162 soldiers deserted
the Nigerian Army last week as
morale sinks to an all-time low
due to the ongoing success
terrorist sect Boko Haram is
enjoying in its war with the
army.
A headcount of soldiers serving
with the Seventh Mechanised
Brigade of the Nigerian Army in
Maiduguri showed that 162 rifles
were abandoned by soldiers
who left their duty posts during
the week. Ministry of defence
officials said that is being treated
as a routine case of deserters as
the authorities are convinced the
terrorists did not capture any of
its soldiers alive.
Apparently, the soldiers are
unhappy about the seeming
advantages Boko Haram
terrorists are enjoying over the
military in their ongoing battle
across northeastern Nigeria.
Sources within the army say that
soldiers are not only unhappy
about the fact that Boko Haram is
a better fighting force but they
are particularly annoyed about
the regularity with which military
plans are leaked to the sect.
One army source said: “Routine
troop deployment, withdrawals
from positions are known to the
terrorists even before the
soldiers on the ground are
briefed. This leak is surely
traceable to the officer cadre
within the division."
Commanders of the Seventh
Mechanised Division only got to
know the extent of the problem
yesterday afternoon, when a
mop-up operation recovered the
abandoned rifles. These
weapons have now been
returned to the division's
armoury and the military
authorities are battling to raise
troops’ morale, which has
reached a new low.
This has been the single largest
desertion in a week in recent
times as the growing
disaffection with the Nigerian
Army appears to reached fresh
heights. Over recent months,
Boko Haram has enjoyed
significant success over the
Nigerian Army as its fighters are
not only better equipped but also
more motivated.

Police confirm explosion in Ile-
Ife
Nicholas Ibekwe
Published: July 1,2014
No casualty was recorded.
—————————————–
The inhabitants of Ile Ife in Osun
state were in panic on Tuesday
morning after an explosion went
off in the More area of the town.
Witnesses say an explosive
device planted in a house went
off. They said a police anti-bomb
squad which arrived the area
soon after the explosion defused
other devices planted close by.
No casualty or damaged property
was reported.
The Osun State Commissioner of
Police, Ibrahim Maishanu, who
visited the scene of the
explosion, told PREMIUM TIMES
that the blast was caused by
dynamites planted by
“mischievous persons.”
He said the nobody was killed
and injured by the explosion as
the dynamites were planted in an
isolated area. He also confirmed
that the police anti-bomb unit
defused other unexploded
dynamites found at the site.
“it was a dynamite of a low
calibre and it was placed in an
area where it cannot hurt
anyone or damage property.
When first one exploded police
bomb unit went to the site and
the second one was found at the
same location and it was
detonated by our anti-bomb
squad,” Mr. Maishanu said.
The Media aide to the Governor
of Osun State, Semiu Okanlawon,
told PREMIUM TIMES that the
explosion happened close to the
family house of the state
Commissioner for Tourism,
Shikiru Ayedun.
It is not clear if the explosion is
linked to the August 9
gubernatorial election in the
state. The state has been
relatively peaceful in the run-up
to the election. But the
government of the state has
warned of plots to import
violence into the state as the
election draws near.

Politics / FG To Establish 9,000 Strong Army Division In S’south by Ogbonaikenna(m): 12:02pm On Jan 03, 2014
FG to establish 9,000 strong
Army Division in S’South
on january 02, 2014 at 10:37 pm
in news
BY KINGSLEY OMONOBI
ABUJA— A new Army Division
would soon be set up for the
Niger Delta region to safeguard
the nation’s economic and
territorial assets in the South-
South, and contain future threats
to the nation’s boundaries with
Cameroon, other countries and
the Gulf of Guinea area.
Sources said that the 9, 000
strong Division would be similar
to the 7 Division of the Nigerian
Army set up in Maiduguri to
checkmate terrorism and cross
border banditry.
The sources added that this
followed intelligence reports that
a new army of militant youths
was being mobilised out of
political mischief to carry out
destabilisation activities.
It was gathered that the plan
towards the new division with
possible headquarters in Port
Harcourt, was the brainchild of
the Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt.
General Azubuike Ihejirika, and
has the backing of Service Chiefs
including Vice Admiral Dele
Ezeoba; Chief of Air Staff, Air
Marshal Alex Badeh; Inspector
General of Police, Mohammed
Abubakar and the DG of
Department of State Services, DSS.

from Bremen to Hamburg, from

were abundance of genuine

Will Nigeria expire legally
today?…lawyers tackle ethnic
nationalities
on december 31, 2013 at 2:00
am in news
By HUGO ODIOGOR, CLIFFORD
NDUJIHE & WAHAB ABDULAH
CONTROVERSIES ruled the polity,
yesterday, over whether or not
Nigeria will cease to exist as a
legal entity after 12 midnight
today.
A conglomeration of ethnic
nationality groups said going by
the Amalgamation Treaty of
January 1, 1914, which joined
Northern and Southern
protectorates to create Nigeria
with a life span of 100 years, the
country will expire at 12 a.m.
today.
Professor Akin Oyebode, a
lawyer, said Nigeria will not
expire because the
amalgamation was not put in
place by a treaty, but by an order
in council by the British
Parliament.
Nigeria
Oyebode has a soul mate in legal
icon, Professor Itse Sagay (SAN),
who argued that there was no
law that automatically gives a
treaty 100 years life span.
However, the ethnic nationalities,
which included Federation of
Oodua People, Middle Belt
Congress, Lower Niger Congress
and Oporoza House, which
congregated on the banner of
Movement for New Nigeria, MNN,
insisted that Nigeria would
become history after today and
urged all Nigerians to embrace
the national conference to agree
on fresh terms of co-existing.
They spoke at a briefing held at
Freedom Park, Lagos. Present at
the briefing were Elder Fred
Agbeyegbe, Co-coordinator; Tony
Nnadi, Secretary-General; Mrs
Hilda Dokubo, Timi Kaiser
Ogoriba, Chief Dan Ekpebide,
Abuka Onalo, Ambah Binaebi,
Shade Olukoya and Leye
Akinmodiro.
On nat’l dialogue, 2015
They urged President Goodluck
Jonathan to speed up the
national dialogue, warning that it
would be disastrous to hold the
2015 elections without a new
constitution emerging from a
national conference.
They said: “The mention of 2015
in Nigeria’s political discourse
instantly evokes two ominous
conjectures. One is the haunt of
the US intelligence prediction
that Nigeria will disintegrate
before 2015.
“The other very bloody prospect
swirls around the 2015 electoral
round in which a northern
politician assumes that there
would be trouble if the elections
are rigged.”
100 years treaty
Nnadi said: “What the British did
in the amalgamation treaty was
to consolidate all the treaties that
they signed with the different
ethnic nationalities they subdued
in the process of their conquest.
“By 1914, the various treaties
were consolidated so as to be
recognised in international law.
Under international law, every
treaty has a life span of 100
years. The Amalgamation Treaty
took effect on January 1, 1914,
which means that it will expire
on December 31, 2013.
“The second challenge for
Nigeria is that the 1999
Constitution, which General
Abdulsalami Abubakar gave to
Nigeria made certain
proclamations that are rooted in
falsehood because it was not a
constitution drawn up by
Nigerians.
“What will hold Nigeria after
December 31 is a hope that the
national conference will produce
another document that Nigerians
would accept.”
Former Director, Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, Dr. Dan Mou, said
Nigeria is fortunate that there
was no separatist movement in
the country.
He said that issues such as these
were what the national
conference should resolve and all
the ethnic minorities should wait
to see the outcome of the
conference, adding that
President Goodluck Jonathan
acted wisely by putting the
conference in place and the
outcome should be subjected to
a referendum.
No danger,says Oyebode
Countering, Professor Oyebode
said Nigeria will not cease to
exist legally on account of the
100 years of amalgamation
because the amalgamation was
consummated through an order
in council by the British
Parliament.
According to him, the process of
amalgamation started in January
1900, when the British
Parliament issued an Order-in-
Council through which the Royal
Nigeria Company, which
succeeded the United African
Company, ceded its power to the
British Crown and resulted in the
amalgamation of the Southern
protectorate.
He said the British Parliament
also issued an Order-in-Council
which resulted in the
amalgamation of Northern
protectorate in 1906. The
amalgamation of Northern and
Southern protectorates took
place in 1914 through another
Order-in-Council.
He said the order was used in
British territories, which had no
legislature to issue such
legislative instrument. He said it
was through the order that
Nigeria got her independence in
1960.
Professor Oyebode agreed with
moves to convene a national
conference because the 1999
Constitution, which was foisted
on Nigerians by the military,
shared the same features and
characteristics with the
Amalgamation Acts which were
enacted without the
participation and consent of
Nigerians.
According to Oyebode, the 1999
Constitution is nothing but
Decree No. 24, which has since
been identified as a fraudulent
document.
Noting that the 1999
Constitution may be valid but not
legal, he said “what we should
expect is for the proposed
national conference to lead to a
constitutional conference
through which Nigerians can
produce a document that they
can respect.”
Amalgamation was not a treaty—
Sagay
Professor Itse Sagay said: “I
totally disagree with the group
that the 1914 amalgamation was
by a treaty.
“It was a union imposed on us
by the British who were colonial
overlords of Nigeria, then
recognised by international law,
which was a legitimate power to
join the Northern and Southern
protectorates.
“So, it was not a treaty at all. If it
were a treaty, both parties could
have sat round the table to
negotiate their merger. But there
wasn’t anything like that at all.
“The people just woke up one
morning and found out that they
have been joined together by the
superior colonial force.
“Meanwhile, contrary to their
belief that a treaty can expire, it
can be forever and can be
terminated by either party. A
party can withdraw from a treaty
at anytime, provided certain
conditions are met.”
