Prior to almagation of 1914, there were three protectorates :

Northern protectorate that includes all the current northern states.

Southern Protectorate that includes all the southern states except Lagos.

Then there was Lagos Protectorate that was the first British protectorate in Nigeria

Lugard moved the capital to Lagos and unified all protectorates in 1914 following the outbreak of WW1 and fearing German Cameroun to his immediate west .


Lagos had always been administered seperately up till 1914 and if you know anything about colonial adminstration, all regions were expected to fund themselves apart from the north that got heavily subsidised by the colonial government.


Lagos only began to enjoy special status after the civil war when it became the sit of the military dictatorship and this lasted till the capital was moved to Abuja.

Other than Obasanjo's legacy projects in Lagos during his brief military regime you will agree that Lagos has not benefited 1% of what Abuja is currently enjoying.

Unlike Lagos, Abuja was built from scratch by the FG.
